- I am so excited for today's video, because we are talking about Totally Spies!, a cartoon series that has given us soooo many fashionable looks that we should talk about. Today I'm gonna style a hypothetical live action of this show as well as suggest the art direction for the entirety of the production as well.

You should make sure Sam, Alex and Clover are still all wearing their catsuits, they would look great in their catsuits in live action.
This cartoon has the biggest variety of outfits ever
A new outfit every episode at the very least, it’s so rare!
I really liked that not only did they have all these different clothes but they would actually wear them more than once just in different outfits.
Yeah it adds a lot of realism, it feels like they have an actual wardrobe!
Alex- sporty and cute
Sam- classic and comfy
Clover- girly and chic
You think the animators took into consideration that they’d borrow each other’s clothes? Explaining why they sometimes overlap in style
I think so! in a few episodes they reference borrowing each others clothes too

Speaking of Jerry it would be fun to have him wear the same suit but with a different tie each time.

I’ve read somewhere that the creators of totally spies actually hired a costume designer (or was it a stylist) so that every episode has different outfits. I think they had like 300 or more outfits. Can’t be sure, it’s been a while.
That would make a lot of sense since it looks like this, you gotta have someone on costuming if it’s a prominent part of the show

the 90s childish flower is more of a sixties thing, because of mary quant and 'flower power' and it came back in style around the 2000s
Oh yes, you’re right! I totally forgot about that, I guess the creators are really into the hippie aesthetic since it comes up a lot in some of the girls’ pieces (especially Sam)
I think the 60s revival dates back to around the mid nighties
The reason why many of the outfits didn’t have patterns and were color-blocked like you said is because of how much more work it takes to animate detailed clothing, and tbh anything detailed at all. I’m 60% sure that totally spies was in-house animated in Canada (meaning they didn’t ask studios from east Asia to animate for them like many western productions do now). It’s honestly astonishing that they even took this much effort in giving each character their own taste in clothes. Btw I’m an animator/background designer so I semi know things about cartoons 😅
Yeah it’s 100% due to animation costs(time that it would require), and the production was a French/Canadian effort, with I think the last three seasons being animated in Canada, so they definitely were working with a tight budget. And I personally love all the outfits and so grateful that they decided to put that much effort into animating a new outfit for each episode! Yeah I can tell that you are based on your insight🥰
What I like about the girls characterization is that they're not stereotypes and they don't just fit one trope.
Yeah one of them likes sports but that's not all she is, and sports don't define her wardrobe or anything like it happens in other shows/movies
Yes that’s exactly it! All of them are good at sports, but one is just a little bit better for example, and all of them like to dress up and such it’s just one of them is really into fashion. They feel a bit more real that way

This is a very late reply, but it is shown that they did. I can’t remember by them actually wearing the clothing piece, but I do remember small arguments about stealing or favors to barrow each others clothing.
I remember clover as being the fashionista, but she experiments more with colours and types of clothes combinations a lot more than the others, so she ends up looking a little more eccentric than sam and alex

I feel like you focused so much on the 90s aesthetic that you kinda forgot to add that the 90s were inspired by the 60s and 70s a lot and that Totally Spies was probably going for that vibe, since those eras were the heyday of spy media like James Bond, Charlie's Angels, etc. If you look at 60s and 70s decor you will find loads of environments with bright walls and little to no black and white. Think of Austin Powers environments or the later seasons of Mad Men. The flowers were a 60s thing originally, and a lot of the clothes cuts like the halter tops or the flowy blouses are also 60s and 70s inspired, obviously with some modern 90s flair.
So happy to see Totally Spies! As a French person, TS is like a religion haha Your video was interesting and on point as usual~ Thanks for not forgetting the Unforgettable Mandy.
Totally spies is so great haha one of my fave animated shows of all time! And mandys see through top layering is iconic 🌸
I love how detailed and serious you were about the fashion. 😂 If they ever do make a live action version of totally spies they should hire you to be the fashion stylist because you obviously did a lot of research and you know exactly what these characters would wear so you would be perfect for the job. 🤣

Hi, new subscriber here. I've been enjoying your videos and enjoyed this one, in particular, having watched this cartoon on Cartoon Network back in the day. Personally, I was always more interested in the parts of the show depicting their day-to-day lives outside of them fighting crime, which I know must sound funny since that was the whole appeal of the show. I think it was partly because their SoCal setting looked so appealing and partly because their interactions with Mandy were fun to watch lol.

One thing I love about totally spies and would fight every single studio on is having impeccable tailoring in all their outfits. The way they're stylish in a flattering, put together way is very important to the show's visual identity imo, so a reasonable portion of the budget and pre-production work should be reserved to guaranteeing the perfect fit of each piece to the actresses
"Oh, but they share outfits!"- I would go to the extent of getting multiples of the same piece altered to fit each girl perfectly ( kinda like what I assume the sisterhood of the traveling pants did- movie magic!). I'm that passionate about it!

this is so good!! I'm not sure if you've heard of this new resurgence of the key west kitten/coconut girl aesthetic. But it literally is perfect for totally spies because it's a mix of y2k and girly summery beachy vibe which is perfect. All of their outfits would be perfect for the key west kitten/coconut girl aesthtic because it is y2k, colorful, and beachy since they live in beverly hills/malibu.

I was just thinking about fashion in Totally Spies. I also think that even tho girls technically dress up to style they still put their own twist into it. Like Clover sometimes is over the top with her outfit choices and its even addressed in the show, Sam is heavily inspired by 60s and 70s and she matches the 90s and 2000s fashion with this retro style but I think sometimes she also wears especially dresses like 40s inspired. And of course Alex usually wears something comfy and sporty. I generally think that Alex wears a lot of this "fashionable " 2000s sports attire, at least that's what I noticed so correct me if I am wrong. And Mandy. I love her style. I think she is the only character that wears white and black the most, also she is the only one that wears "her" color like purple and dark magenta almost all the time. One more thing (sorry for rant) I personally have this feeling that Mandy's clothes are like a little bit out of style maybe not old-fashioned. Idk maybe just me but she doesn't really wear the most fashionable 90s and 2000s stuff. I think she is pretty neutral in style. Sometimes she wears something grunge/rock inspired but usually her pieces are kind safe preppy mean girl kinda clothes. Maybe even a little vintage inspired in contrast to Clover's inner fashionista and Sam's "cool" retro vibe. Idk. I like her style don't get me wrong but I wonder if it's just me. One thing I have noticed is that they all do not wear the same style bottoms. One character is in pants. The other two are in a skirt. And vice versa. The same is with the witches from wind club.

Hi bestie ! Just discovered your channel and I LOVE IT SO MUCH ! I watched totally spies as a kid and it was a freakin staple for me, the fashion was so wild xD Incidentally, I’m now an storyboarder and currently working on the show as an assistant for season 7. I can’t share it but I have like a 50 pages + pdf moodboard for the outfits and I freaked out so much because every page is soo so great and I want to wear everything ! I don’t know how great the final product will look like next year but efforts were made on this one ^^

You should make sure Sam, Alex and Clover are still wearing their catsuits, they would look great in their catsuits in live action, and either you could order the cosplay suits from zentai zone or herostime, or just use some regular red, yellow and green catsuits, Sam, Alex and Clover should still look like how they did in the cartoon, and the catsuits are their trademark, that's what makes them what they are and who they are, so can you make sure they're still wearing their catsuits?
Yeah, I’ve put it in the catsuit section of the vide taht I think they should have bright catsuits that are similar to their cartoon ones in the adaptation. I think it’s important for the girls to have them too🥰
