    Looks to me he is jealous of the new baby

    Mother’s behavior is definitely puzzling. Allowing the adolescent male to suckle is peculiar. My guess? She’s attempting to comfort or reassure the adolescent male. For all primates, nursing is an integral part of the mother/child bond and the ultimate comfort when they feel sad, frightened or lonely.
    Unfortunately, her mixed signals have only made the adolescent more determined to harm the infant and steal more milk. Yikes, that is one jealous big brother!! 😅
    Very interesting video. ❤

    Not only did she let him nurse but on both sides, too funny. The poor girl doesn't exactly have access to a pump and Loki can only eat so much, lol!! Kiki will let him know to stop, she did when she weaned him through first time. He's a mamas boy, he's got her wrapped around those huge fingers!!

    Mama sure moved fast when she thought Loki was gonna fall to the ground because one of his arms lost grip at 12:22. It wasn't even a half a second and Kiki was on it. 👊

    Can anyone explain to me the meaning of Kiki's (the mother) expression, the pursed lips she showed all the time Riki was feeding? I know they have a 'kiss/squeak" vocalisation used as a warning, but this went on such a long time. thank you.. I just adore these videos, only wish I could understand the language (Malaysian?)

      She is letting Riki know that she doesn't like what he is doing. He isn't quite "too old" to nurse in this video. If he tried it now (two years later) she would be unlikely to allow it at all. They sometimes nurse up to 6-7 years old, especially in the wild, and especially when they are an only child, which Riki is not in this video.

    Isn’t it kind of crazy how Kiki and Riki always seem to know where the camera is and are always glancing over at it... do you think that they do things sometimes for the camera? Riki sometimes seems to be doing things to entertain the camera and kiki seems to always be showing Loki to the camera. I wonder if that is the case. Also people seem to forget orangs have varying intelligence just like humans. I really think Kiki is one of the more intelligent orangs and it’s cool to see Loki gaining a personality and copying his moms facial expressions

    • @leec4185

    • @EmmaDee
      @EmmaDee Před 5 lety

      Rachael Q I thought I saw a documentary on time where their babies stayed with them up to seven years? I’ve read SO much that I could have gotten it mixed up with another primate but that’s what I believe I hear while watching it. Yet in this case she had another baby so who knows.

    • @rachrach35
      @rachrach35 Před 5 lety

      No you're right!! Orangutans stay with their mom longer than any other animal, 7-8 years. I don't think they are nursing that entire time though, LOL! Riki is just taking advantage.

    • @robpeters5204
      @robpeters5204 Před 4 lety +1

      Tee Bo orangs stay with their mothers side up to 8 to 10 years depending on the circumstance such as food, water, shelter, size of their environment wether it is a large forest and if they are able to branch off and go their own way when they are ready or small area where they may hang back out of mamas way. Lot of variables but when mama wanes her older child it is up to her. Some may nurse for 5 to 6 years. First children usually nurse longer but when there is a new baby , mama knows when to wean the older child for the infant to nurse only. There are some cases when the older child will put up a struggle and not want to stop but again, mama will keep everything under control. It happens with human children's just the same. Nature has everything under control.
      It was a touching moment at the beginning to see Riki nursing and Loki sleeping while mama rests. Very normal. Riki is 5 at this point and is going through the weaning process. Some older children can be weaned quickly and some can put up a fight. Mama will know how to control the outcome.

      @@rachrach35 they do nurse up to 6-7 years of age, though not nearly as much. Riki has extra access because Kiki had his baby brother, so there is a lot of milk available. You should see Riki now. He hit a growth spurt big time.

    Kiki is a Better Mom with Loki. Baby Loki almost fell at 12.51 and Kiki grabbed her in the nick of time. Riki needs to be separated from Kiki. He won't leave Kiki's breast's alone. He is coming into his little manhood and is starting to act like Kiki is NOT his Mom. She let him breastfeed a little, she really didn't have much control over it. Riki is also getting a bit aggressive w/Loki keeps grabbing his head to move it off a breast, or grabbing his head and pulling on Loki like he's trying to pick him up. It seems like Kiki is having a harder time keeping Riki off her and Loki.
    Does anyone else see the same thing or am i looking at this the wrong way? What's your thought's?

    • @KLee-py4fe
      @KLee-py4fe Před 5 lety +4

      I think we're all hoping her parenting skills will be different. Julie and Gypsy did most of the discipline with Riki and he's really good at taking advantage of her. And they want Valentine to learn parenting skills. Julie would give him a good swat when he needed it and Kiki needs to do the same. It seems pretty common for older male brothers to be just that, more play than nurturing. I don't think separating him is an option, he's never been with Chappys family and Borneo, his dad is pretty aggressive. So hopefully Kiki will step up to the task, her mom skills are so much better with this little guy

    • @danainthevalley
      @danainthevalley Před 5 lety +1

      @@KLee-py4fe Sure they can separate them! It's definitely an option if he ends up seriously hurting another orangutan. While it may not be at Tama Zoo, they could always move him to another zoo or another safe place who cares for orangutans. Eventually they'll have to move him, anyway, because he'll be too big and he'll be more of a danger to the other orangs.

      No, all his behavior to this point of time in the video (two years ago), has been perfectly normal, expected, and safe. And he doesn't need to leave the milk alone. Orangs stay with mom up to ten years and will nurse up to age 6-7.
