    It’s disheartening to reflect on the industry practices of the past, particularly Barry Gordy's era, which is infamous for claiming a substantial share of O.P.P., underscoring a trend where personal gain often trumped community welfare. This approach is reminiscent of instances like Ashford and Simpson, who, despite being celebrated songwriters within Gordy's Motown empire, retained 100% of the publishing rights to Method Man & Mary J. Blige's “All I Need.” Their connection to Barry Gordy's Motown highlights the pervasive industry mindset of the time. Today, however, there's a silver lining as artists now possess greater autonomy, able to either sample with permission or innovatively recreate songs, thus steering clear of past constraints and ensuring fairer control and distribution of their creative outputs.

    • @rotweilerscholar1181
      @rotweilerscholar1181 Před 5 měsíci +4

      That's the whole objective of publishing rights. Berry Gordy owns the rights to the music they sampled.. I sample but I can't hate Berry Gordy. That comes with borrowing someone else's composition 😀

    • @dreamsmade

      First off, brother, thank you for engaging with my extensive comment; it was a pleasant surprise to receive a response. Your points are well-taken, and my discussion is rooted in concerns about morals and ethics. While Barry Gordy may have experienced injustices or been exploited early in his career, by the time he achieved significant wealth, the contrast with groups like Naughty by Nature, who faced poverty, becomes stark.
      It's challenging to convey the idea of higher frequency actions to those accustomed to operating on a lower vibration. This brings to question the real benefit to Motown artists and their families from being associated with Barry Gordy. Having the capability to claim all publishing rights or a significant portion thereof doesn't necessarily align with ethical or universal principles.
      The saying "All skin folks are not our kinfolk" resonates here, especially considering the lack of infrastructure built by Barry Gordy for future generations in Detroit or elsewhere, despite his wealth. Most narratives focus on Gordy's financial success, overshadowing the struggles of the artists.
      Icons like Dick Gregory and Malcolm X have reminded us not to rely on entertainers for moral guidance or leadership. My reflections aren't about harboring resentment towards Barry Gordy-I recognize his role and contributions. Rather, it prompts a broader inquiry: when will we, as powerful souls or gods, choose to evolve?

      @matthewvaneyk4713 Před 4 měsíci

      I can understand taking some of the publishing but not 85 percent. That’s excessive considering it’s essentially just a loop of a single bar played over and over again. Lyrics, which typically comprise 50 percent of songwriting credit and determining royalty rates, in the case of O.P.P., Gordy and his songwriting team at Motown had nothing to do with.

    • @Bo-dh2yc
      @Bo-dh2yc Před 4 měsíci

      I have a simple solution. Discover artists that can actually play musical instruments instead of rappers that only write lyrics. Then, these rappers would have music/lyrics rights. You can't use copyrighted music and not expect lawsuits. What do you think would happen if someone uses the O.P.P. lyrics without consent? Lawsuit.

      Nah, he owns the publishing rights. If you sample his shit, a huge hit like ABC with goddamn Michael Jackson on lead vocals, and make it the foundation of your new song talking about pssy and shit, why would you expect to get much songwriting credit? If you sample sht then you have to pay. 15% of an worldwide hit is still significant, on top of the fact that it jumpstarted their stalled career after that New Style sht bricked.

      @@Ronthaldd Nah I can think of a handful of things that explain why we're always last ahead of not giving no name *ss groups with no fanbase 50% of publishing on hit songs with the most well known singer on the planet on lead vocals. High rate of fatherless homes, high rate of incarceration, poor credit ratings, etc. That song made their career and saved them. They got a great deal. 15% of a worldwide hit is better than 100% of a flop. If you asked them if they would do it again for 10% if they had to, then they would.
