I always been a movie fanatic but I remember Merlin played “Meyhem”, a rapper loosely based off 2Pac and he had so much conviction with his acting. In hindsight, it’s eerie that he was shot in the movie, survived and then died from getting shot again in the film, to end up being murdered in real life. And I didn’t know he died until like 7-8 years later when I never seen him in anything since “Play’d”, I clicked his Wikipedia article and read it. Damn… Art really does intimate real life sometimes. Those movies back in the early 2000s really shaped my childhood back then. I’m 33 now. Time flies!

He was the archetype for young black male actors, that carried out into the 2000’s & to this day! That young heartthrob who had good looks, physique, was artsy in music and theater, had some hood traits but also a crossover appeal. If you look at all the black tv shows or films in the 70’s, 80’s, early 90’s - they never had actors they were cutting edge like Merlin or Tupac. The Cosbys, Family Matters, etc. Specifically the archetype of the bad boy who’s a boyfriend or the attractive & yet dangerous relative with a heart of gold. Those roles are good for a young black actor cause it highlights their traits as potential stars in Hollywood.
Sorry for the long message and hope my grammar was good. But yeah he was the Michael B Jordan Prototype. Had he won the role in Leonardo DiCaprios Romeo & Juliet, he would’ve been a much bigger star, but I’m glad he didn’t cause the character wears a dress & make up.
Play’d: A Hip Hop Story doesn’t get talked about enough. It was one of Merlin’s last films with Toni Braxton (and other greats) and to me a classic movie. Great music too in the movie too! Check it out!
Fun fact: When he spoke about the cars on 125th street in Harlem next to the Apollo... He was referring to"Grants tomb, NYC."...every week, I believe it was a Thursday night, randoms would come out to flash their cars. I was a teen then, doing tricks on pedal bikes .but cops would try and knock us off or tug at bike handles when we rode in the streets..I guess due to how crowded the area was on those nights. Legendary nights though ..

@@nevinreid311And the song that he sang as the R&B artist, had a hook that said, “have a seat on my love…” 🎤 🎶 I had the biggest crush on him, he was so handsome.
Have a seat on my love 💕😎
Essence Atkins worked with him on her show Half & Half ( Santana’s last tv appearance) and James Earl Jones ‘s Under one Roof ! Rest in eternal peace Mr.Santana 😢
@@yourroyallioness6607me too ! He was so fine ! ❤
He was the original Michael B. Jordan.
Los Angeles is a beautiful place but there is a dark side that's eerie. Biggie, Tupac, Merlin, Nipsey, Pop smoke, pnb rock, Kobe Bryant 🤔😞.
Most the guys was from Newyork
PAC died in Vegas though
Simplex_Jessa fuh real he got to get his fax straight 🧐🤓

I love this interview segment of Fredro Starr, I feel like we time traveling back to da 90s and early 2000s. I love how honest, respectful, solid, and confident he is about telling his story! A real human doesn’t act tough, a real human stands on their morals and values, moves with wisdom, and defends their self when necessary. Rest in Peace and Power to Merlin Santana 😢. A senseless setup murder.
Fredro role in strap is AMAZING!!
Yes!..I have that on DVD🎬👏🏾👍🏽
That brother sent a message from the heart at the end. May God bless his soul🙏🏿
I still crush on Merlin Santana as Romeo❤️ RIP handsome🙏🏾
Not too many people knew he was Dominican🇩🇴. Very talented dude...tragic ending over some BS!
If they watched Steve Harvey show they did. Still hate how they gave him the Sammy Sosa make up in the last seasons trying to make him lighter.
It’s a no brainer with his name lol
Everyone knew that lol He spoke fluent Spanish and he said it in every interview just about back in the day in the magazines!! Only people that don't know that are youngstas
With a last name like Santana who woulda guessed 🤔
@@MidniteSociety88 I just recently watch the whole series, they did him dirty tryna make his skin lighter like that. That was insane to me!
I remember I was in 11 years old back in 2002 when I first watched the movie “Play’d”. It was on BET. I’m 33 now. Time flies!

Fredro ain't lying,we grew up together,he was always tough!!
ART definitely gives great interviews with barely any cut off or interjections‼️💪🏾👀📲
Rest peacefully Merlin. I still remember when & where he was murdered at. Not far away from where I lived at in the Crenshaw district in LA in a unfortunate set-up!🙏🕊
🙏🏿🕊
How it happensl?? I heard he was with a girl
@jetfuel2415 yep, the ho lied about her name, age and that merlin harmed her
@nevinreid311 Mhmm, never heard that til now but when you're a successful transplant like he was, he had no business hanging in the hood as much as he did
@nevinreid311 I seen that video from bullethead about what he said. Merlin used to come to this after-hours spot like a few blocks from where he got killed at that was ran from 1 of my big homies and he told me that he frequent that spot like 2, 3 times a month which is in a blood neighborhood. He said merlin didn't start no trouble but always got mad faded there smoking and drinking
At first this clip was making me sad. I grew up loving all of them he named so it was disappointing hearing they didn't get along. I'm glad they were able to mend whatever relationship they did have. RIP to Merlin, Lamont and Kobe ❤
Yeah but, that black female who had gotten Merlin deleted couldn't their relationship. Instead she needed to tell the worst lie on him. "BELIEVEALLWOMEN" right?
I’m so glad that people are still interviewing him and bringing him into the spotlight. I used to love this ninja. One of my childhood favorite shows of courses Moesha. But the roles he played in movies just loved him.
I remember buying a burnt cd of Fredro in high school, lol back when us 80 baby’s did that. That song “what if” was 🔥🔥, still listen to it. Whole cd bumped fr
When he was in Chicago filming save the last dance Fredo came to my projects. This dudes is 💯 forever in my book. My project was called Newtown.Low end or No end
S/0 to the low end
Nigga I went to college with (NIU) told this same story, so I know you
ain’t lying 😂
Man I felt like he was the Michael B Jordan before Michael B Jordan. 🙏🏽
I honestly believe Merlin would have been a huge star in TV and/or the Movies had his life not been cut so short. He was a natural when it came to Acting. RIP 🙏Merlin.
@@xoxxobob61 Agreed 1000%
Dope interview 🔥🔥🔥
Black don’t crack! Fredro is aging well❤
ok yall in the comments keep saying the same s**t we know...we know he didnt play bud on the cosby show sheesh! he made a mistake smh

Rest in power and respect Merlin Santana
Nah, he played Stanley. Bud was Rudy best friend

I was saying the same thing.
Great interview….
Great interview clip
Yea that was my favorite episode too. That was a good era. R.I.P Lamont Bentley and Merlin Santana
Play’d: A Hip Hop Story doesn’t get talked about enough. It was one of Merlin’s last films with Toni Braxton (and other greats) and to me a classic movie. Great music too in the movie too! Check it out!
♥️💜🎉Great interview
Great message!
R.I.P Mr. Santana. My sister's loved him when i was growing up. Sad as hell how he lost his life so young.
One of the most scandalous celebrity murders smh. He should still be here, R.I.P.
Merlin Santana
Mar. 14, 1976 - Nov. 9, 2002.
Wow a blast from the past I would listen to his stories all day❤
Merlin was cut short of a very promising career because of a life smh 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Good interview.
Excellent review video
🔥 interview
Fun fact: When he spoke about the cars on 125th street in Harlem next to the Apollo... He was referring to"Grants tomb, NYC."...every week, I believe it was a Thursday night, randoms would come out to flash their cars. I was a teen then, doing tricks on pedal bikes .but cops would try and knock us off or tug at bike handles when we rode in the streets..I guess due to how crowded the area was on those nights. Legendary nights though ..
The Moesha show has a lot of cast deaths.
Yep.. Merlin Santana, Lamont Bentley, Yvette Wilson, Bernie Mac, Kobe Bryant……..
Just that much more respect for you for that observation.
You are under-rated as an actor and lyricist. Would love to see you in more movies. Stay you. Strength to ONYX.
He played Stanley on the Cosby show.
I’m very proud of you, Art keep doing what you’re doing just do us all a favor don’t become like Vlad when you ask your guest questions let them answer.
Dont cut them off like he does.
I’m hoping that you will actually end up taking over so we can put that fool out of business.
I like the way Dialog edit his curse words
That's slick
4:13 love that move ride , wish it got the same hype as Friday, player club, the wood, booty call ..... Ride had a dope cast as well
The hat and hoody is fire 🔥
This was a great story. 👍
Felt this whole interview 😩🙏🏽 Being from the hood you tend to want to hang in the hood because you can relate, but it’s not worth it
That episode he talking about that was my favorite episode
He was one of my favorites watching him as romeo from steve harvey show
Merlin didn't even get shot in the hood. He was up in Baldwin Hills where they got him. That's where all the effluent and rich Black use to stay.
Yea but it's right on top of the Baldwin jungles which is the hood. It's right next door.
That’s crazy that Merlin, Lamont and Kobe are all dead now smh!
Sacrifices in Hollyweird bruh
I cant believe 3 of her boyfriends on the show have now passed. Smh. RIP
Moral to the story, you can give back to the neighbor hood. But don't hang out in the hood, when you become successful.
I'ma be honest. I don't even remember Merlin on Moesha. His more memorable role for me was Steve Harvey's show. I remember Fredro's role as Q. He worked better for that particular show. I really enjoyed Merlin's role on Steve Harvey because he wasn't just the typical pretty boy/lover boy. He was actually very funny as Romeo. He got to show his comedic skills there. He shouldn't have been mad (unless it caused him to get a pay cut) because he was meant for that other show.
Well said brother don't play in nobody else hood.
RIP to Marlin was a sad story back in day 🙏🏾🙌
Damn Fredo,Kobe,Romero, Lamont Blentey and Usher only 2 alive in 2024 that’s crazy to think
SMH
My favorite episode TOO 😂❤
