There is a âgot divorcedâ memory in the game. If Bella and Mortimer being divorced was supposed to be a part of the game canon, they wouldâve included that memory.
Also Mortimer has literally a portrait of Bella over his bed, if they were divorced that wouldnât be the case
I mean they only made Bella disappear because they accidentally deleted her file so it's not surprising there's discrepancies

Maybe their relationship is so low because she has been missing for years now?
Let's assume she disappeared when Alexander was like 4 and he's now 11. That's 7 years that Bella spent distant, it's not too far fetched to assume that Mortimer started to feel disconnected to her. Sure, she didn't went missing because she wanted, but she's not there anyway.
Widows move on sooner or later and maybe Dina was something that reminded him a little about Bella, since she was once her sister-in-law. He may have loved Bella, but now she's just a fond memory. He may look out for her, but, even then, love may fade and he starts to look at the stars less and less. And that's okay.
Why didn't Bella's relationship with her kids suffered so much? Because she's their MOTHER after all. It's maternal love. It's not going to fade anytime soon.

Tbh I always saw the Goths as a sims stand in for the Addams family. So the idea of Bella and Mortimer as anything less than complete soulmates is utterly unacceptable.
But. If I can separate my feelings entirely, then it's an interesting theory.

Maybe they're not technically married because Bella is presumed dead by the authorities? She has been missing for so long with no evidence that she's still around that the authorities consider her dead, therefore Mortimer is single. So he moves on with Dina...and then Strangetown Bella appears.

The problem with these theories is that they don't take into account the mechanics of the game. PV Bella Goth has A TON of missing data, including her relationship with every Sim prior to the developers deleting her from the game (setting her as a hidden Sim). Those values you see in the relationship panel are the default values Sims that live together get. She still sees Cassandra and Alex as family because the data that establishes Family Trees is different to the data that establishes relationships. Taking the mechanics of the game into account, as well as all the data these characters are missing, is CRUCIAL to understanding what the developers truly intended for the Goths in TS2.
I miss Sims 2⌠the best game in the entire franchise
Someone already commented that there is a great video by Marticore explaining Bella from the gameâs perspective. It makes the theories less exciting unfortunately when you know that most of the lore parts are just technical aspects that had to be done to make the goth family playable (eg. Mortimer being âdivorcedâ so he can remarry in sims files again). Great video I enjoy the theories even though itâs less magic haha
The Gothâs has always been for me that kind of couple who make me believe that kind of true eternal love since playing the sims games as a kid. I have grow up with this idea that I just donât wanna believe anything else. I personally hate whole storyline in the sims 2 when we think Dina is kind of aunt for Cassandra and Alexander because of her marriage for Bellaâs brother Michael.. and then Dina is trying Mortimer and this everything just makes me kinda sick always. I am never been fan of how the Gothâs storyline was handled in the end. I just like to think how the developers did not set the correct relationship flags for everything and some cases game mechanics was complicated and so on. I donât think either that Playstation games is included with the storylines. I still love heard or read these theories, I think is what makes the sims really interesting and I know everyone plays different way which is fair but is just.. well some of these theories always breaks my heart a bit because for me Bella and Mortimer are always together in the end

Same here. I loved Goths in TS1, they very much reminded me of Addams Family, in both their dark-ish aesthetic and their loving relationships. I never liked the story in TS2, it seems that whenever there are nice relationships in any kind of fiction, the sequel always ruins them, as if relationship drama was the only way to build a story...
I mostly believe the devs messed up, accidentally deleted Bella and then thought it would be fun to make a story out of it instead of fixing it.
I do love how the community comes up with various theories, it's fun to read / listen to them and compare them, but in my game, I tend to make the family anew from the scratch (I don't like the hassle you have to go through to bring the in-game Bella back) and play with them as if nothing bad ever happened.
Genreally speaking though, I love the sheer scale and depth of lore in TS2, I just don't like how they handled Goths specifically.

See, to me it was always a façade. The first games always put the Goth's front and center, the perfect couple, the faces of the franchise. And The Sims 2 was always about seeing "behind the façade", behind the white picket fence families we were presented in the first game. The Pleasants? Not so pleasant. The Newbies? They weren't quirky, they were poor. And the Goths, the perfect love story? Well, it ended up awful, like love usually does. Cause real life sucks, and ultimately, that's what's fun to play.
In terms of the Console games I'd say that there's more evidence that Bustin' out takes place after TS1 than before.
-Firstly the fact that it takes place after the console version of TS1 which seems to be in an almost identical place in the timeline to the PC version is evidence of this.
-There's also the fact that Mortimer and Bella have both progressed in their respective careers and that Mortimer has noticeably aged.
-As for where Cassandra is in Bustin' Out given that the Player character has a goal to send their child to a prestigous Prep school which makes their child leave the household, it seems quite possible that Cassandra is also at that Prep school during the events of Bustin' Out.
I also believe Bustin' Out take place between Sims 1 and Sims 2
Cassandra possibly being sent to school, whether that's a boarding school or even college by now

I am glad that you are going more into depth with this, because there are inconsistencies throughout all of the Sims iterations. First and foremost, they did Bella dirty by making her a Romance Sim in Sims 2. How does one go from "Good" in Sims 3 to a Romance Sim? All iterations, other than Sims 2 and Bustin' Out portray Mortimer and Bella with extremely high relationship scores. While the relationship decay in the Sims 2 can easily be explained by her not being considered "deceased," but "missing," it would show a level of decline between all family members, but the extreme decline between Mortimer and Bella, just does not add up. Bella could have had an affair, but Mortimer would have had a memory of that, to corroborate the justification for such an extreme decline (unless aliens wiped that memory from him?). Alexander also should have had the memory of his mother being abducted, but what if he actually saw the abduction? The aliens could have wiped that memory from him. Don's telescope cannot be where Bella was abducted from, because without cheats, abductions are impossible, but the Goths do have the correct telescope for this to happen. It makes sense that Alex would think that his mother might have been murdered, because without that memory, and his mother's failure to return, he would want to find a way to learn the truth, ergo going back in time, and writing from his findings.
Taking into consideration that "clones" were definitely created, due to the fact of game corruption in the Sims 2, especially considering that a sim cannot exist in 2 towns simultaneously (without corruption), it makes perfect sense that Strangetown Bella is not actually Bella from "Pleasantview." And since she also appears in Lunar Lakes as deceased (in the future), and there is also a sim that shares her surname, I am inclined to believe that she was most likely already pregnant when abducted (which is not possible without cheats). My theory is that Bella was the only one to be abducted in this manner, and was the reasoning behind why only males are impregnated by aliens, and any pregnant sims after Bella cannot be abducted.
My theory is that the "real Bella" was taken to Lunar Lakes (one of the dystopian alien planets, in hopes to rebirth life), prior to the spaceship that crashed with all the other sims, and her clone was sent back to Pleasantview, but crash landed in Strangetown, whereby her injuries caused her complete memory loss. I am thinking that Bella just wanted to go home, and since the aliens wanted a way to preserve their dying species, Bella was the best test subject, after all, Bella had drank the "Elixir of Life," and was the only known sim at that time to have experienced such drastic age reduction. Because she was adamant about returning to her family, I theorize that the aliens wiped her memory and sent her baby daughter to live with another alien host family on Lunar Lakes, so she would be more willing to comply with their needs. Bella was the bridge that allowed the aliens to once again thrive and prosper. Bella was their savior, and though she died (in old age), without ever regaining her memories, she had become their Sim icon, and was celebrated (Even Belladonna Cove has a statue of Bella).
As for Mortimer and Dina getting together, it had been not just days, but a few sim years since Bella's abduction, for Alexander was a toddler (now a child, and based on timeline, should be actually older than the Pleasant twins, but did the aliens mess with the family's aging?), and Cassandra was a teen (now an adult, even though she was seen as a teen when Alexander was a baby). While it might seem sus that Mortimer would fall for the widow of his deceased "brother in law," he has no memories or familial relationship ties to Michael or Dina, therefore, again I ask, "did the aliens delete those, to give him a chance at happiness, or as a favor to one of their own descendants, Dina?

I wish I could like this more than once, and am definitely adopting it as my head-canon going forward (because, tbh, i also just cannot face a reality in which Bella and Mortimer aren't a perfect, adoring, Addams family-like couple, lol)

After all, that was their original inspiration for them, even down to the children, which they definitely made Cassandra a bit too mousey moving forward from Sims 1. Even as the Lore continued to suggest otherwise, with her major feat of the time machine invention, which she sends Alexander through, because in the Adam's family, she always used her brother as a test subject.
I most often change Cassandra's primary aspiration back to knowledge, which fits her far better (she can have a secondary of family) if you go by her interests. But I do see both children wanting to know the truth about their mother.
If you want interesting interpretations of Bella and Mortimer, I suggest watching RĂŠmi Marocelli's machinimas. If you want to see how alternate realities might change the Lore, I suggest ZeeGee Sims machinimas, beginning with her Prequel series, as Cassandra is introduced in the Sequel series, although, she is the one that uses the time machine, but still relevant, as to how Don Lothario may have ended up in Riverview, and how Agnes Crumplebottom ended up being so mean-spirited and lashing out to all lovers. Although, the events do not take into consideration Pleasantview (mostly incorporates Sunset Valley), as part of the timeline, it is an interesting take.

Lol, SimPE won't break your computer. You can definitely corrupt your neighborhood save file, especially if you mess with memories (deleting or adding). That's advanced SimPE stuff. But even if you accidentally mess with something that might corrupt your neighborhood, as long as you don't save your neighborhood file, you're fine.
It's a great tool. The only scary part is not backing up your neighborhood before opening it đ
I've heard horror stories of people having problems with their PC after corruption to do with sim PE đŠ

I just ask because this was the only program back then to make mods, fix saves, and make custom objects work, so if it was killing computers, it wouldn't be out there. I know they were constantly updating it, so maybe that was it? Like registry files got messed up or something?
But it was built for Windows XP, so if it's killing modern computers, I wonder if it's because it's an old program.
So I'm only partly in and I know of the psp secrets which throws questions on their relationship, but I simply refuse to accept this. They're the sims equivalent of the Addams family I cant help but believe they're deeply in love
I also take anything on the caliente sisters from ts3 with a grain of salt, regardless of the different timeline/time travel to me it seems obvious the devs mixed up their personalities. Nina was the romance sim and logically should be the heartbreaker, Dina being a fortune sim should naturally have the gold digger want (which aligns with her story in 2 and supposed reason for marrying Morty) or a basic financial aspiration. So I take those entries as incorrect
I know that when I first played the Goth Family in Sims 1 (this is when I was like 7 years old) I always somehow goofed the relationship and it would cause Bella and Mortimer to have a low relationship level so I can actually kinda understand this theory a little bit. Itâs kinda like how Skip Broke died from a âpool latter accidentâ referencing how some Sims 1 players killed sims by deleting the latter⌠I never did the pool latter trick, but I have experience of accidentally goofing the Goth Marriage so I can see a divorce being possible between the events of Sims 1 and Sims 2.

Great video, can't wait for part 2! This just highlights the fact that the sims franchise (except 4 lol) is so amazing and well thought out. Like it's 2022 and people are still able to make realistic conspiracy theories, amazing!
They don't have to be divorced, maybe just separated. I think Mortimer is too traditional for divorce, so Bella just left, or kept living in the house but without interacting with him. He's suspiciously okay after her disappearance though, and, let's be honest, for a traditional man than disapproves of divorce, the only way to move on for him is to become a widower.
I'm not sure how "traditional" one needs to be for that. Some just are better made for a long term relationship than others, regardless of it's possible formalities.

If the developers had intended for them to be divorced, they would have added that memory since it exists in the game. We don't know how close they were before her disappearance, but we know they didn't get into an actual fight or become enemies, otherwise that would have left a memory as well.

Mortimer is the kind of guy that would think their spouse getting abducted by aliens is *basically* the same thing as getting divorced
I don't think they can be divorced since neither Mortimer nor any Goth member has the memory of Mortimer and Bella being divorced. Having said that, I do see Mortimer as a traditional man who probably wouldn't ever want to be divorced so he could have lived with Bella in a facade marriage and that could explain the low relationship. After all, the relationship wasn't terrible, they may have just lost feelings but still wanting to be together due to having a family, being good friends and things just working out that way. Another thing that, for me, explains the low relationship is that Bella could have been missing for quite some time now and Mortimer's memory and feelings for her faded with time. We just started the game at a time when he had already learned to cope without Bella in his life.

If they had divorced (or âbreak upâ as itâs referred to in The Sims 2) before Bella went missing then Mortimer (and the children as well, I believe) would have had a memory of said break upâŚso no, lol. They were not divorced.

I would really like to make a list of things that don't make sense, that have been misunderstood, absurd inaccuracies but they are really so many that I would need to open a separate post if I wanted to (and honestly I don't really want to)
I can only say for now, as a person who spends her life on simPe fixing things for fear of corruption that most of the clues taken from the memories have been misinterpreted and that we shouldn't be too surprised if they chronologically make no sense or are weird...
When with The Sims 3 the EA/Maxis or whoever was in charge of the story put time travel in the story, they plugged a huge plot hole to justify these chronologically weird memories of The Sims 2 BUT without thinking that they made a lot of time mistakes even in The Sims 3 with many families.
I want to point out that they have never been too... careful to match story and facts. For example, many sims who are supposed to have a certain personality have interests that make them look like another character.
Many sims cloned and hidden in the game were most likely created for the photos of the story and somehow becoming corrupted forced the developers to hide them. (I would like to mention that most clones or hidden sims have missing data, they were NEVER made specifically to create mystery.)
I don't even want to mention the fact that the sim memories themselves are in really bad shape. For example, Brandi has half memories with a Skip and half with the Skip clone if I'm not wrong. Olive Specter remembers two Nervous and one of them is the hidden clone.
And no, It's not for story reasons, they just didn't want to fix the memories. (If they had wanted to fix The Sims 2 problems it wouldn't be that easily corrupted.)
As for the alien DNA... I can't be absolutely sure about this as I haven't checked it myself but I know actually many sims have inherited alien DNA like Nina Caliente and Jill Smith who should inherit the alien eyes
I can't be accurate on this subject but those who have tried to fix pre-corrupt neighborhoods have always said that for example in Strangetown many premades have missing DNA. I don't know how they found out that some sims should have inherited alien DNA, but in the meantime if Flamenco is not half alien it is only for the reason that he was created in CAS because anyway for some reason you can't have human skin sims with alien eyes in game, you have to have a mod to fix this problem because the alien eyes are tightly glued to the alien skin. This is why Flamenco have green eyes and not alien eyes...
(Note now that I'm only half way through the video, but I have seen comments talking about why they aren't married if you bring her back or whatever, so here is my theory)
Okay, do consider this. I don't know about other parts of the world, but this is an American based game. That being said, in the US, I have always been told that you are pronounced dead after being missing for 7 years. Bella disappeared when Alexander was very young, and we are now playing with him as a child. So it has been several years.
Simply put, what if it has been more than 7 years since her disappearance?? That would make them no longer married. Plus, that's a lot of time for him to move on and for their relationship to weaken

It's always been weird to me that Dina was married to Bella's brother, cheated on him, then he died, and Mortimer somehow thinks this is someone he should marry. đ¤Śđ˝ââď¸She was your sister in law and now you want her to be your kids' stepmom? And what's Dina's obsession with the men in Bella's family?
Having added Bella to my household in my Sims 2 Strangetown play- I don't think she was abducted. I have another theory.
I initially just wanted to see if she has memories of being abducted. She doesn't, nor does she have memories of her family, or any relationship with them. However, she *does* still have a relationship with Don Lothario!! Which is why I'm pretty sure Strangetown Bella is the OG Bella. She also has a few other relationships which are set at 20 relationship points like acquaintences, but for some reason they have romance options unlocked as if they'd been lovers before and simply had a falling out or drifted apart. She is a romance sim in that game.
Here's the most important part. She's pretty high in the criminal career! Like level 7 or 8. I'm thinking that things just got too intense. Maybe there was too much heat, her enemies were a threat to her family, or she was whisked away into protective custody. But I think she'd be retired from crime if she were in witness protection. Maybe she left to protect her family, but kept ties with her lovers since they're not as serious relationships? Funny enough if you look at her interests, she actually has low interest in crime and will get mad if your sim tries to talk to her about that subject. Maybe she didn't choose crime, but crime chose her. Lol
She also has fun items in her inventory. A large telescope (red herring?), a DJ booth, a bottle of champagne, a potted palm tree, and an orchid plant.
In the end I gave her her own household, built her a mansion, and got her up to the top of her career. She looks damn good in the evil overlord outfit. So good it almost seems like it was made for her. She's living her best life in a corner of Strangetown now, in my playthrough.
I think she also says in the psp sims 2 that she only married Mortimer for money. That's interesting that her career is crime though, I played yesterday and met her and my sim talked with her long enough to become friends, so she gave him a job as a record store clerk where she said she worked.

So, I repeated the process on a different computer and she's still a criminal so now I'm not sure if it's really a thing or just a mega coincidence.

I donât think that is the case Mortimer has a portrait of her over his bed, if he was in bad terms with Bella that wouldnât be the case. Also Mortimer would have the got divorced memory, it still a interesting theory tho

I mean you CAN legally be declared dead and come back to life and not lose your marriage status. It just isnât more than a couple minutes after death that it happens lol.
In Sims 2, the default was to have one of the Sims take the other's surname at marriage. However, Dina is still Caliente when the game starts and Michael is still Bachelor in all the memories. If they were married, other than having memories fiddled with, one or the other should have had a name change.
I've been playing sims since I was a kid and never knew there was all this lore and aeverything!

Unpopular opinion, but I don't think they had a bad relationship
The developer just wanted her to be found in Strange Town but messed up at some point
if we use the SimPE to look at the vanilla Pleasantview hood (not clean version) you will see that they both have 85 short term and 95 long term relationship

another thing is how he earned 10,000 after her abduction, this wasn't a single earning. the game keeps track of how much a sim earns throughout their life, so if he earned 9,999 by that time and earn even just a single simolean later, the "earned 10,000 simoleans" memory will pop up
I also think it's safe to say they don't entirely follow the gameplay logics, since Don doesn't have any memory of the abduction despite the fact that Bella was on his lot when it happened, so it could be an oversight or intentional, since the guidebook suggests we play his lot first and the missing memory has very high potential to spoil the mystery they planned for us (the next family tries to intrigue us by making us question whether or not the sisters had anything to do with it, since they arrived right after the disappearance - Don's family album is not consistent with this tho, definitely an oversight here)
And because Cassandra also got "positive" memory of the abduction ($Subject Got Abducted by Aliens {Memory - Knowledge - Sim Abducted}) in the memory. i think this is not about them being happy about it, but rather... yeah... an oversight. .... or not. because we could also interpret this as his coping mechanism, that his beloved is still alive somewhere
keep in mind Cassandra is not a knowledge sim, she's a family sim so this memory data shows up as negative for her. I can say this because technically there's no "good" nor "bad" version for this memory, the game just turns it positive if you're a knowledge sim.
And never forget, not every memory was created equal, take a look Don's and Cassandra memory of the engagement, Cassandra has a "Got Engaged to $Subject {Memory - Family - Engagement - Success}" while Don has "Got Engaged to $Subject {Memory - Family - Engagement - Fear}". They could do this because the memory has 2 versions that technically have nothing to do with the sim's type, unlike the abduction memory

the telescope with don is a red herring. in the Sims 2 a sim can only be abducted through normal gameplay whiledin using the Farstar telescope not the Astrowonder telescope.

If the game considered Bella is alive and still married, Mortimer wouldn't be able to marry Dina. The game doesn't allow bigamy. So, it's canon the Goth's got divorced.
I bought the sims 2 after the sims 3 came out so most bugs were fixed by then. I was always able to have sims move the household from 1 world to another so I always made a sim in strange town just to make friends with Bella then have her join the house and then move the household to Pleasantview. So I could have her reunite with her family. I had this story that a childhood friend of Bella searched the world for her since Mortimer had kids to watch and he had moved on thinking Bella was dead. But her childhood friend never gave up because she really didn't want Dina marrying Mortimer since Dina is a gold digger. And when finding her friend she convinces Bella who has no memories to come back with her to Pleasantview so she can reunite with her family. And the reason the kids and Mortimer are unfamiliar with Bella is because she's been gone for so long and there are a lot of feelings that can make it hard for them to feel close to her. And she's got no memories so she's basically trying to live with a family that she can't remember. I usually played the story out with them getting to know eachother and pretending Mortimer and Bella renewed their vows/got remarried.
When i was playing my challenge of playing a character i made and doing only his wants, i found out that when bella and mortimer grew up they started dating on their own
I didn't realize at the time the child sim I befriended and eventually got with was child Bella, I didn't know what name she was prior to becoming a Goth. I'm actually surprised no one said something about that being Bella "Goth" as a child, she was a hair away from being next Gen in my family before something happened to the save. I went on not realizing who that sim was until I saw another video about them and saw a picture of child Bella, I don't know what happened but by the time I discovered her family it was (I believe) just her and her mom..... I think I actually impregnated her mom or something.... I might've killed off her dad and brother and just forgot about it but all I really remember was her mom being there.
I like the theory, even if its a little far fatched for me, i like to think both in lore and in-game mechanics/features (on the michael and bella relationship thing)
