Why Do African Teams Fail At The World Cup?

  • 1934 was the first time an African country featured at the FIFA World Cup after Egypt qualified for the tournament in Italy. The continent would, however, not have a representative at the competition until 1970. But since then, there has been a streak of 13 straight FIFA World Cup tournaments with, at least, one African country present. 2022 makes it 14.
    But in all these tournaments where we’ve had African representation, the furthest a team from the continent has ever gone is the quarter finals.
    Before you think that’s not so bad, compare it with the continent of Asia which has had representation in 15 World Cup tournaments and has managed to produce a country which finished in 4th place.
    North America, a continent which obviously does not have as much talent as Africa, even if you add Central America and the Caribbeans, has produced a country which won bronze at a World Cup tournament.
    And yeah, you could argue that Ghana were literally just one Suarez hand and then a penalty kick away from a 3rd or 4th place finish in 2010, but we honestly still don’t think that’s enough excuse for a continent blessed with that much talent. Africa should be regulars in the semis, at least.
    I mean, the continent is home to the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Frack Kessie, and Riyad Mahrez, and before them, it has been home to the likes of George Weah, Samuel Eto’o, Jay Jay Okocha, and Yaya Toure. But the farthest an African country has gone at the World Cup is the quarter finals? Why?

    After looking at the number of teams qualifying for the world - how do you expect especially now for the South American, Asian, or African team to win the world cup when half of the tournament teams are from Europe? I can't believe how we are blaming everything and everyone beside not the number of teams from Europe. Europe have nearly 14 or 16 teams in the world cup, that is crazy. Last world cup when South Korea played Germany! Imagine if that was a final! South Korea could have won the world cup.

    Africa seem to have no real infrastructure in bringing in young players, instead of relying on failed french/Dutch/English born player's . Players like Salah and mane are world class but very rare players, the lack of funding, investment and alot of corruption is hurting them. Asia has overtook them internationally and that mainly cause country's like Japan and Korea pushed alot of money into youth football, look at both there squads full of bundeliga,la Liga , top leagues. Look at Ghana, Tunisa etc. for example not many play in top leagues

    • @Afrikkid
      @Afrikkid Před 5 měsíci

      Unfortunately, africa would be one of the richest continents had it not been for european colonialism. When Europe left, they left us with no governments and they took our valuable resources such as our gold. France especially stole a lot of gold from a lot of african nations, and look where they are now with that gold money. Playing with a nearly entire african team, and being one of the richest footballing nations ever. If Europe hadn’t taken our way to make money, we could invest like Asia and be just as good as Europe is right now, while Europe would be no better than North America. Of course, some of it is our fault and some of it was beyond our control. For example, Cameroon rejecting Mbappe, and not being able to play for Algeria either, he had to go with France, which was a huge loss for both nations as he is one of the goats. Other players born in europe with african roots could’ve represented Africa, but didn’t want to. It’s unfortunate how poverty and bad decisions kept us from beating the likes of Europe. Although, someone we could be like is South America and i see no reason why we aren’t like them. Brazilian players from young ages suffered from poverty much like africans and were forced to play outside barefoot with homemade balls, they got good at controlling the ball with their bare feet and learned to do so with shoes. Africa is the same, in fact, it may be argued that football is played more by ordinary people and youth in Africa than in Brazil. Especially in my country and countries like it, morocco. We play 24/7. On the beach? forget swimming, perfect place to have a 6 on 6. Streets? Sidewalk? Alleyway? Even indoors, we play anywhere. Unfortunately much like you said, we don’t have an infrastructure in bringing in those same young players who are amazing at the game. Most africans are not rich, and play in unorganized teams with their friends, not in payed semi pro youth leagues. And those kids who play in the dirt sand and mud with their friends can easily be miles better than those playing in those youth leagues. If a couple scouts just for a little while went to the beach or a random field and watched groups of teens or kids play, they could identify talent early on. Most of the kids in Africa who are good at the sport like I said don’t play in a league at all. I only met a few people other than me who play in leagues who are good and they most certainly are not african leagues. So until africa tries a little to look outside of their leagues and go try to find talent in the streets and sand, they will forever be forced to rely on players who either get their only skill from europe and beg them to play for africa instead, or settle for mediocre players.
      Sorry for the essay, summary:
      Although poverty greatly affects how African football works, Africas scouting system still needs to look outside of the leagues and try to identify good talent that doesn’t play for an actual team in order to improve.

Ghana is the WORST team in the world cup (source: FIFA Men's National Team Rankings) and how, JUST HOW, will CAMEROON pass in a group with BRAZIL, Switzerland and Serbia? Senegal is the ONLY African nation that ACTUALLY has a chance of going to the RO16, unless if Ecuador plays better than Senegal, and if France gets grouped (due to champions curse), Tunisia has chances too, but Morocco in a group with 2018 3rd place AND runner-up teams? No.
      Conclusion: Senegal and Tunisia are the ones with the highest chances of passing, but they will most likely get eliminated in the Round of 16, why? Because if Senegal passes, they will play either England, USA or Wales, and if Tunisia passed they will have to face either Germany or Spain.

      cuz in the semi finals and 3rd place game they lost their two CBs due to injury, Aguerd, and Romain Saiss, they were so solid and good. one of the reasons why Morocco haven't conceded a goal from an opponent until the semi final.
      so we played our second choice CBs, even Mazraoui was injured, so our 3 backs all injured except Hakimi.
      Imagine if they were not injured, we could won against France or at least Draw against them and win penalties for sure with Bounou it would be so easy.

    Saying Asia had a Country to get 4th place when she played AT HOME and had at least 2 games won by very peculiar referee decisions.
    (not saying those games were Sold, but they were not far from it )
    as a show that they are better then Africa is kinda lame comparison
    And USA had a Semi in 1930 , the very first World Cup when the best European Countries didn't join
    Out of 44 chances Africa got 3 Teams to the Quarter final
    Asia had 37 chances and got 1 Time Quarter 1 Time Semi
    N. America had 42 chances and got 5 Times Quarter, 1 Time Semi (in a WC that didn't have Quarter Finals)
    those are close numbers, and doesn't show that Africa is less successful the the other 2
    In the end there are only 2 Regions that manage to truly and repeatably get to the World Cup Semi - Europe and S. America
    the World cup is a VERY VERY Closed circuit only a quarter of the teams that show managed to get to the Semi and only 10% of them managed to win

    • @idopanski8699
      @idopanski8699 Před rokem

      Then you compare to S. America with 85 chances (almost double the rest) and an impressive record of 9 Wins, 5 Additional Finals and 8 Semis
      and obv. Europe with 245 chances (so can't compare) 12 Wins, 16 Finals, and another 32 Semis
      even though Europe is getting an unfair advantage in the amount of teams it sends
      they obviously are better at getting to the final stages percentage wise
