    Well, well, Joni's cigarettes, drink and age have deepened her voice and oddly enough, enriched or 'texturized' its timbre.
    I've always felt that she has a poet's soul that is transported, edified, by music.
    Joni wrote the Woodstock anthem. Her rendition will reveal that it wasn't just a music-fest, but a world event that gave voice, through music and lyric, to a world-changing, higher-conscience- inspiring movement.

    A lot of Joni Mitchell's fans don't like that her vocal range is much lower/deeper now but I like it better than her earlier vocals. They are smokier, richer, & carry her years of life. The orchestration of this song is also phenomenal. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS VERSION OF HER SONG. Mitchell will be 78 years old in November. May she live 78 more years.

    @itsmeValdo Před 3 lety +35

    Life, whether on the ground or in the clouds, contains agony and ecstasy. Both Sides, Now is a vivid affirmation of Joni's identity as a painter and an idealist. Clouds are a favorite subject of landscape painters, and the images Joni describes embody their capricious nature. She first sees them with wonder and hope, and when they change shape, she begins to doubt her feelings. The idea of understanding something as mercurial as clouds, or love, or friendship seems an impossible task that would mean accepting change without feeling regret or disappointment. Her conclusion, "I really don't know life at all," is bittersweet and sincere, and appeals to anyone hurt by something that once brought them joy.

    If you've ever seen Love, Actually, this song during the scene with Emma Thompson finding out the Christmas present she saw her husband buy, was not meant for her. And she keeps her smile, has to get the kids to the xmas play. This song plays as we watch her take a minute alone, and we see Emma's struggle to keep her composure. We see her examine her whole life, we see her fight, and we see her crumple. Then she forces herself to ignore the dagger she just took straight to her soul, she wipes her tears away, pulls herself together and emerges with a smile and cheer for the sake of her children. I've seen Love, Actually many, many times, it's brilliant, it really is, and I cry every single time I watch that scene. Emma Thompson makes us feel the hurt and loss and betrayal, and she can't have more than one minute to deal with it and put it away.

    I love both versions of this song. she first wrote and recorded this when she was in her early twenties. It interesting to hear the contrast in her voice as a young lady and her mature voice when this album was recorded. I think the meaning is deeper with mature Joni. The song Little Green is about the baby girl she gave up for adoption.

    The comparison between her interpretation of the song when she was young and now is night and day, but beyond that is the change in her voice. Deeper and smoky now rather than the higher register and bell-like tones she had in the 60's and 70's.
