Joni is one of the best songwriters of the 20th century. She inspired so many, including Prince and Robert Plant.

So delightful to see a music-lover experience Joni Mitchell for the first time! :D Yes, she wrote this song, (originally performed solo with her acoustic guitar back when she wrote it decades earlier) and that's Mark Isham on trumpet (with mute in the end of it) that provides that wonderful added flavor. Mark was part of her live band for several years as well as in the studio. Renowned orchestra arranger Vince Mandoza developed the orchestration (also for the album by the same name) in the year 2000. Joni is an AMAZING songwriter/composer, amazing guitar player, piano player, dulcimer player, she produced something like 14 of her own albums, then ADDED a co-producer (Larry Klein, her husband at the time) for several albums. She ALSO PAINTED the pictures used on many album covers. (she was an artist before becoming a musician/songwriter) Joni is probably one of the most DIVERSE musicians, never afraid to experiment and try new things, was WAY ahead of other musicians/groups/bands re: adding elements of "world music" for example.
By the way, ANOTHER aspect of the variety of her music, both re: genres/styles and such, is the changes within her voice. She started out singing and speaking in a much higher voice than heard in this video.. but while she no longer had the 3 1/2 to 4 octave vocal range of her young adulthood after a couple of decades in the business, she "made up for it" by continuing to develop even more expressiveness to her vocals. And her musical compositional skills continued throughout her career. (she won a Grammy for an all-instrumental piece she composed, played and produced in 2007) In 2015, Joni was discovered on the floor unconscious.. required brain surgery and MONTHS of hospitalization, followed by extensive in-home rehab. She had to re-learn EVERYTHING, including how to talk. Through extensive hard work and therapies, she was finally able to start singing a bit, 3 or 4 years ago as I recall, and finally able to start re-teaching herself how to play guitar (by watching old videos of herself playing) sometime in 2021. So when she made a SURPRISE appearance at the Newport Folk Festival inJuly 2022, and participated in a music "jam" with a number of her musician friends, and even played a full-song guitar solo, the audience went absolutely CRAZY with delight! :D And when she sang THIS SAME SONG "Both Sides Now" with SO much passion and emotion, she had not only the AUDIENCE in tears, but the other musicians on stage as well! :D THAT performance of Both Sides Now is the most profound musical I've ever seen/heard in my life! :D Check it out! :D

Joni is a legendary artist, singer/ songwriter and painter. She wrote this song in 1967, though it was recorded and made popular by fellow folk singer Judy Collins in that same year, it won Joni her first Grammy for Song of the Year. Fast forward to 1974 with her ground breaking album, Court and Spark where she won her 2nd Grammy for best orchestral arrangement in a pop song, Down To You. Her voice wasn't always this deep. She was a first soprano for many years however her addiction to cigarettes and booze lowered her vocal range as she got older. Her music spans folk, rock, pop, and jazz. Please check out her earlier version of BSN from the 70s, also Chelsea Morning, Big Yellow Taxi, Help Me, and You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio... her biggest pop hits.

Hey Ace, I thought I'd drop off another suggestion for another one of Joni Mitchell's songs, in case you're interested. This is a live performance "Joni Mitchell - Help Me (Live in London 1974) HQ" this song was off Joni Mitchell's sixth studio album called "Court and Sparks" it was released in 1974 it infuses the folk rock style of her previous albums with jazz elements. And it became an immediate success, this became Mitchell's highest-charting single--it went to #7 on the pop charts and even topped the easy-listening charts. Her song "Help Me" was the first song she recorded with jazz-infusion group L.A. Express...Basically this song was a BANGER🎶

Joni is the best singer songwriter of the past fifty years. She had a hit with this in 1969, now thirty years later she brings a more subdued, and more reflective take on her timeless classic. You have good taste and a good ear.

It surprises me that so few Gen Z know of Joni, and even more thrilled that some are open-minded enough to give her a shot. She's a LEGEND, ICON, and pop music institution and for so many a primary influencer and standard bearer. Her songs have become American standards that have been covered countless times by giants in their own right.

Joni Mitchell is an icon, she hails from Saskatchewan, Canada. A true “ flower child “ of the hippie years. Rolling Stone has listed Joni as one of the top ten songwriters of all time. She has won 10 Grammys and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also has an amazing vocal range.

You need to listen to her first recording of this, when she was in her twenties, it’s her view of life as a young woman, this version is looking at life as a more mature woman having more experience of life. Listen to it, you won’t regret it.

One of the best singer-songwriters of the past century on par with Dylan and Cohen. She wrote this philosophical song in her early twenties and reprises it here in her late-fifties. I recommend her albums BLUE and Court and Spark, as an introduction to her music and voice.

Both Sides Now - the lyrics are so brilliant Joni tells a story of joy & disillusionment. This masterpiece hits even harder as you age & experience all the ups & downs of love & life . Watching Joni at 80yo perform it at ‘24 Grammys was so moving

Late to the party, but as a child of the 80s and 90s, this was the first song (besides the theme, Joe Cocker’s version of With A Little Help From My Friends) that was played on The Wonder Years. It still makes me nostalgic for the show, since I didn’t grow up in the 60s or 70s. I’m also Canadian and into the early 2000s, this genre of folk music (modernized) was still pretty popular here, especially by east coast artists. You can hear Joni’s influence in a lot of Canadian music in the 90s. Sarah McLachlan, Nelly Furtado, Chantal Kreviatsuk and Amanda Marshall to some extent owe a lot of their success to Joni Mitchell. She was an Alberta girl, a prairie girl, even if her music was very hippie and the prairies are known for the exact opposite. Terrific song.
