True, just like I would say about some of the best works of Bob Dylan, Lennon-McCartney, Garcia-Hunter..... She's written many incredible songs, but this is one of her finest. And she was so young, maybe 21, when she wrote it. It sounds like the perspective of someone who was much more mature.

She told Elton John she once heard the Cabaret/Jazz singer Mabel Mercer do it, and she thought it was the most amazing thing she'd ever heard. So she went backstage to praise her but didn't say she was the composer. She told her that her interpretation as a mature woman gave it the dimension it was supposed to have. Mercer was offended (Are you calling an old woman!?) and threw her out :D. But I am sure that interpretation had an impact on this one. I've never heard Joni sing with this voice culture on other songs

@@shin-i-chikozima I live in Hawaii! But traveled many times to Japan. I retired from Hawaiian Airlines (35yrs)right before Covid-19 hit. I enjoy everything Japanese!! Last 5 years have been to Hokkaido to snowboard at all good places! Hopefully the travel restrictions for Japan will be lifted for fully vaccinated! Like the lyrics says “I don’t know life at all” so we must cherish the moment!
And the infection rate is lowering

we sang this in choir in public school in 1978 79 80 , happy giggling school kids , and we could have never foreseen that , decades later, Joni would give such a deeply heartbreaking rendition. But ever since I heard it in 2003 , I've not stopped listening to it , I have it on CD and saved on youtube . It is the very sound of one's soul grieving and body aging and a life that has passed us.
