You really need to listen to the original as well as this one. SO vastly different. The original one- even though it the same subject, is more hopeful...a life not yet lived. This one, more thoughtful, more melancholy, a look back and mistakes made. And while I love both versions...this one has much more power and impact.

My mom loved her music and she played it around the house growing up but I was too young to appreciate songs like this. That is until I saw the movie Love Actually while in my 20s and this song burned a permanent memory for me and now I love it. This song is so deep! If you haven’t seen the movie Love Actually then please do as this song is a perfect match for a scene in the movie where a loving wife is being betrayed by her husband but she finds the strength to put her children’s happiness at Christmas over the agony she’s feeling. I am a grown-ass man but that scene always gets to me.

This was one of her biggest radio “hits”. This is a “re-do” done later in life. The original is from around 1970 and is much more upbeat. I’ve never heard this version before. You can tell it’s being sung by someone who’s been on the planet for awhile....lot’s of “life-lived” in that voice....and lots of cigarettes. It just occurred to me that the changed quality of her voice here is, to me, the female version of how Robert Plant’s voice has changed over the years. The same feeling of so much life lived, both good and bad, happy and a fair amount of sadness......love and loss.. I’ve probably heard it too many times, even though Joni is one of my favorite all-time artists. I hope you dig deeper with her as she is in the top 50 songwriters of all time. I would suggest Amelia..... Just for your own listening, I would suggest listening to Rainbow by Robert Plant to see what I mean about the poignant quality in their voices they’ve both gained through the decades.

This is the one where she has indeed seen life from both sides. I actually prefer the older "smoky" voice for this song. Love that Wayne is on the song as well. "Well something's lost and something's gained in living every day." This is the line that floors me.

The first recording she did of this song had a meaning for the times in that era, when she came out with this album I was blown away at her new arrangement and instrumentals because of the years gone in between and all the heaviness of the 60', 70's, 80's, 90's with the many losses I won't even go into here just brought tears to my eyes. I was there in the 20th century with the 1st release. And at the age of 66, I'm here in the 21st century for the rebirthing of this gem of a legacy. Joni said, 'It's life's ILLUSIONS I recall. I really don't know life at all.' What Joni is saying is that nearing the end of the journey, she's realizing that it's all been one big illusion of a journey here.' Freedom, truth and love on this planet are marginal at best.

Joni Mitchell is one of the best singer-songwriters of the last century...on par with Dylan, Cohen, etc. She wrote the definitive song about Woodstock, made popular on the airwaves by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Love Joni - but Judi Collins is who you want to hear doing this song - different stratosphere

It's all subjective I suppose, but I personally prefer her older version of this classic much more. In 1970 her voice had more range and the musical accompaniment with her acoustic guitar was a lot better.

I never could stand the original version of this song. This version, on the other hand, wrecked me.

I wished you had listened to the original version. Very different

Judy Collins had a bigger hit covering this.

An older Joni; her voice is much lower.

The original version is ten times better.

This version was done many years later than her original version which she did after Judy Collins released it on her album one year before Joni recorded her song.i like both Judy’s and Joni’s earlier versions better though this gives a far different perspective of one has experienced life. Joni’s voice is not the same here from many years of smoking cigarettes!

She must be up in age on this version? Totally different than the original! The Original, is better!

The people are right, her original version is IMO a better version. Love Joni.
