Joni is a CANADIAN ICON 🇨🇦 and the wisdom she had to write this song in the past current and future tense is magical, she is an old soul.

Hearing this song now at 62 means so much more than it did when I heard it at 17. The scene in Love Actually when this song plays gets me all the time, so emotional, how Emma Thompson stands there and gives herself a moment to crack and then pulls herself together and soldiers on. Her quiet desperation in the face of betrayal is heartbreaking. Best scene in the film. Something I'm sure both women and men have been through.

I'm a dude and I feel the same. The song is perfect for that moment in the film and Emma's performance is so raw and real. Love Actually became a favorite of mine and I watch it during every Christmas season.

Ugh, the pain in that scene is crushing and then she has to go out to the play with him and the kids and pretend everything’s great. So so painful 😓

This is a beauty. Joni actually re-recorded this song at the age of 56 in year 2000 on her 17th and final album entitled 'Both Sides Now'. The difference between the younger and older version is mesmerizing in my opinion. Her voice had matured so much throughout the years. It was richer, more penetrating, Sounded and felt like smooth, velvet chocolate. You could feel the years of passage between the two releases and how much wisdom she had gained between the two releases. At the 2001 Grammy Awards, she won a Grammy for the re-recorded version, and a second Grammy for the album overall. She was 57 when that happened. She's now 78 and just received an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College about a week ago. Fascinating human being.

Thanks Kevin - working at Best Buy with you in 2006 really helped broaden my musical horizons. Glad we were both such slackers and just used the computers to google shit lol

When I heard the clouds album when it first came out (yea I'm old) I thought you could teach a month of an english course based on the lyrics. My suggestions for songs would be Father & Son from Tea For The Tillerman & Your Song from the Elton John S/T album.

Joni is a true genius, magical song writer and lyricist/poet, impeccable musician (Rolling Stone top 100 guitarist) who played the Appalachian dulcimer to wonderful effect in contemporary music, not to mention piano, and vocalist with few equals. Try Amelia or Song for Sharon for amazing lyrics!

She did another version of this song when she was much older, and her voice was much changed from smoking. However, this version has as much impact and emotion (if not more) as the original version. It is sung from the viewpoint of having lived a full life. czcams.com/video/aCnf46boC3I/video.html

This song was first recorded by Judy Collins in 1968, and I never did like that version. Joni recorded her own version in 1969, and while I like that one better, it still doesn't feel authentic to me. What would the typical 26-year-old know about life's wins and losses? But recently I listed to the version Joni recorded in 2000, when she was 57, and I was GUTTED. She matured into the lyrics. I recommend that everyone hear these two versions back-to-back. It's really something.

Joni has a ton of great songs but Borderline is particularly fitting these days. Both albums from later in her career, Turbulent Indigo and Taming the Tiger are astonishing lyrically and are not this same folksy type of feel. You cannot go wrong with listening to anything off those albums but Magdalene Laundries, Crazy Cries of Love, Sex Kills, No Apologies, and on and on. She recorded this very young and on one of her very last albums she redid this song and performed it and I think it would be so interesting to see what you think of this same song sung by the same person after a life very well lived. For me, it might as well be a completely different song done by a completely different person. In case you want to check it out... czcams.com/video/y0YkM4SGg4c/video.html

She was extremely young when she wrote this. It became popular with Tom Rush a great and important folk singer from Boston. It made her a known quantity. Joni took it from there. Circles within circles... Isn't it time that you grew up too.
It isn't about mystery; it is about growing up.." Cartwheels turn to car wheels in town." " it won't be long now before you drag your feet to slow the circles down." A child, teenager, an old man... Not hard to figure out if you only listen to what is there.
