There was Canadian music similar to this that was popular all the way up until the early 2000s. Sure, it was modernized, but you could hear Joni's influence in a lot of Canadian, especially east coast artists at that time. Everyone from Sarah McLachlan to Amanda Marshall to Chantal Kreviatzuk was doing their version of this kind of folk music at some point in the 90s. It wasn't quite the same, because music had changed over a quarter century, but the influence was there. I remember this was the 3rd song that played on the pilot episode of The Wonder Years - right after Wayne roughs up Kevin and Kevin has his first real exchange of the show with Winnie Cooper. I had forgotten how good that show was and how incredible the soundtrack alone was. I remembered it was really good, but I'd forgotten how good.

Joni has said this song was triggered by literally looking at clouds from both sides, flying in a jet over the top of them. You've opened a door to one of the great songwriters of all time. A very similar gem is The Circle Game. But there are many masterpieces after that.
Just goes to show how much impact one voice and one guitar, with timeless lyrics, can have. "Circle Game" is another such treasure. "God Must Be a Boogie Man" yet another. She's the boss.
There's a live version of her singing this in 2000 at a tribute concert. Same lyrics but completely different arrangement with an orchestra. She sat in a chair and sang along with some younger singers. Together they sang Joni’s music. She didn’t try the falsetto, but was still amazing!

Dude. I am your brother. I first was overcome by this record as a 17 year old american male. I had hormonal relationships with females, none of which worked out well. Joni Mitchell's music captivated me. I was massively male hormonally, but had this fetish for Mitchell's music that caused me some grief, in that ordinary males did not fall in with her music; it was perceived as being feminine, when it was simply from a woman's (Joni's) point of view. The music that my male friends and brother related to was better than the regular stuff, not to go into detail...but I always felt somewhat marginalized by my fetish for Joni's reflective modalities. I still love the male perspective in the blues and in every other venue to the extent that it has something relevant to say. It is just wonderful to hear such a clear and beautiful, considerate voice from the female perspective. Peace, brother.
