She's Canadian and was on her own from a very young age. She had life experience at that point and it doesn't matter how old you are. That's the key. Life experience. There was Canadian music similar to this that was popular all the way up until the early 2000s. Sure, it was modernized, but you could hear Joni's influence in a lot of Canadian, especially east coast artists at that time. Everyone from Sarah McLachlan to Amanda Marshall to Chantal Kreviatzuk was doing their version of this kind of folk music at some point in the 90s. It wasn't quite the same, because music had changed over a quarter century, but the influence was there. I remember this was the 3rd song that played on the pilot episode of The Wonder Years - right after Wayne roughs up Kevin and Kevin has his first real exchange of the show with Winnie Cooper. I had forgotten how good that show was and how incredible the soundtrack alone was. I remembered it was really good, but I'd forgotten how good.

Joni Mitchell is a great Canadian-American singer-songwriter. She covers a lot of genres of music including folk, pop, rock, classical & jazz. She has had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "The Circle Game", "Big Yellow Taxi", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.

My interpretation has always been that sometimes things are beautiful and happy.. and other times not so much. Both sides. Life itself comes in ups and downs, wins and losses, give and take. And in the end, we really don't know all that we think we do.

She wrote all of her own music. She's just not an amazing vocalist and performer, she's a gifted painter as well. This song was recorded and was a huge hit by Judy Collins, who also did this song justice. She had a stroke a couple years ago, and until recently most of us thought we'd never see her again. Until, just this last year she was live at Newport Folk Festival with Brandi Carlisle...there's a few videos on CZcams! Wonderful to see her again. Joni can make you cry, or laugh. For another side of her you might enjoy "Raised on Robbery."

Dude. I am your brother. I first was overcome by this record as a 17 year old american male. I had hormonal relationships with females, none of which worked out well. Joni Mitchell's music captivated me. I was massively male hormonally, but had this fetish for Mitchell's music that caused me some grief, in that ordinary males did not fall in with her music; it was perceived as being feminine, when it was simply from a woman's (Joni's) point of view. The music that my male friends and brother related to was better than the regular stuff, not to go into detail...but I always felt somewhat marginalized by my fetish for Joni's reflective modalities. I still love the male perspective in the blues and in every other venue to the extent that it has something relevant to say. It is just wonderful to hear such a clear and beautiful, considerate voice from the female perspective. Peace, brother.
