  • Have you ever made fun of a girl for liking something, for example, Kpop? When you first hear the word misogyny, you think of an outward and aggressive hatred of women, but, it can also take much smaller forms, imbedding itself in everyday conversations and eroding a girl’s feelings of confidence and self worth from a young age. So the next time you make fun of a girl for what she likes, think deeper about why you have these beliefs and how this impacts her.
-- Sahana is a 17 year old first-generation Indian-American and a senior at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, NJ. She strives to be politically active and socially aware, regularly attending marches and protests for causes that she believes in. She is the head of her school’s speech and debate team and actively voices her opinion on current social issues such as misogyny, racism, and classism. Being the head of her school’s diversity committee, she attends diversity conferences, strives to engage in meaningful discussions with her peers, and continuously educates both herself and her community on diversity, inclusion, and equity. She is currently organizing her school’s first Culture and Arts Fair to showcase the multitude of cultures in her school. She is also the head of her school’s medical club, loves science, and wants to major in Public Health in college in order to better the American healthcare system in the future to ensure that it is fair and accessible to everyone. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

it IS about misogyny lmao. it's not just about her interests but how stereotypically feminine things are looked down upon in society. you can literally see it in how people shame men for using makeup or liking kpop because it is "for girls" and people always shaming women for doing typically girly things.

Homie ,women wear makeup exponentially more than men.we all know cosmetics is multi-million dollar industry they want to make more money by selling to men . it doesn't mean men shouldn't wear makeup, if it make you happy ,go ahead. The problem is bts preach about self love but they ain't comfortable with there own faces so they were makeup or surgically change it (they know bitter truth is looks matter) and bts love there fandom but they don't love you as individual person,so grow up

Because of misogyny, women and girls basically aren’t allowed to have wants, likes, or hobbies. I say scrap that. I’m an AFAB person, I like international music and art, I want to be an architect and study the stem classes to aid in that, and I do metalworking, working out, and traditionally “feminine” things for fun. Who cares? Just do it! (Yes, this is assuming you have the resources and support needed, I am aware of how lucky I am to be able to enjoy these things.)
Edit: My career ideas have changed a bit and I am planning on going into environmental studies, rather than architecture, though I still wish to study it on the side, just not as my main career.
Edit: I wrote this before I was able to express and explore my gender identity, and I now identify as Bigender using she/her and he/him pronouns--so I am tech not a woman, but still feel very comfortable in my femininity and within womanhood to some degree.

Well, I still resist the idea to call a Pumpkin Spiced Latte a cup of coffee, but it is truly the most delicate experience as a flavored white coffee. And it deserves a sip. You might love it as I do. ;)

Making a judgement based on how someone looks, is a natural survival instinct. Just like a fight or flight, or friend or foe response.
Most of these responses are based upon each individuals lived experience.
We then use conformation bias to reinforce such beliefs, just like the lady in this video does to reinforce her belief in misogyny.

I have been saying this about the music thing for YEARS. Anything that is perceived to be "for girls" is instantly written off as shallow or juvenile. And it hurts because for so many of us, the music we listen to is closely tied to our emotions and experiences, like an extension of ourselves. The rejection of the art that you love feels like a rejection of you as a person.

I think it's more a cluster of data points making a clear picture... Other women feeling the same, what's considered commonly humorous in our culture ("Basic", Kardashians, blonde jokes, etc). There are psyche theories that for boys to individuate they have to be "not girls" and avoid doing girl things, specifically by mocking feminine traits. If you take a lot of details in, it paints a clearer picture. Fair question, but I will point out that part of the prevalence of misogyny involves women tired of being doubted when we relate our perception of experiences that we've been gathering data on for a long period of time.
