2002 jeep liberty renegade bought new in 2003 off the showfloor. When wifey wrecked it, i lifted it with 2" moog deisel springs and a ARB winch bumper on the front with a pinch weld mod, and 265 16 tires (fits on original rim) DRIVES LIKE A QUAD I LOVE IT. You know, california would not let them in without a 1" drop ? they dropped it 1 " the front forks can raise the jeep 1 ". Also they would not let the deisels in the state. But it has 210,000 miles, looks great, (cosmetic damage only when it was totaled)

Dude. You are such a legend. I jusy bought a 2008 wrangler with close to 200k on it (i got a really good price) and had it inspected. Passed inspection but i still had all fluids flushed, filters check etc. I've had the rough idling at red lights and get that death shake sometimes, triggering the red lightning bolt and etc lights, also the blue/grey smoke. I told my mechanic to check the egr valve and he said it was clean. I'm 1000% checking and replacing this part tomorrow. I can't keep having that sinking feeling in my gut not knowing if shes going to start or if shes gonna die while im on the road. Thank you again. I will update.

@@RussShawTV the guy I just bought it from claimed he just had a new catalytic converter put in. My mechanic said he saw catalytic converter error codes, but figured they just didnt clear them when they installed the part. Might be worth looking into though. I don't know much about under the hood stuff but I'm learning a lot! Also, I recorded a video of it starting to shake while idling and the lights coming on. I just checked my video and the engine light didn't come on but when i was restarting the vehicle, it was one of the last ones to clear from the dash.

      @@justblaze4707 P0420?
Your vehicle actually has three catalytic converter‘s. He probably change the one on the tail pipe exhaust. The ones that clog (V6 3.7 you got I’m guessing) right next to the exhaust manifold. Bolted straight to it and they are not an easy replacement. If you have the P0420 code odds are it’s one of those cats. If they are clogged and that’s what’s causing the engine problems. It’s not good to keep driving it like that can do serious damage to your valves overtime.

@@RussShawTV Update: I took it to my mechanic and gave some input, telling him I thought it could be a pcv valve problem. Additionally, we both looked under the hood before I left and noticed an air filter plugged into an open vacuum port on the engine. We were both confused and he attached a hose and connected this to the air box (I think he meant intake manifold). I got the vehicle back the same day and he ended up replacing the pcv valve, doing that hose, cleaning the throttle body and doing a couple minor things like checking for vacuum leaks. He said this resolved the problem. I wasn't even out of the parking lot and it started to do its shake, and I got the red lightning bolt and the other etc light. I didn't have time to go back in but its concerning now because everything that I've researched has been addressed now. Could possibly be a Cat issue like you mentioned most recently.

I just did some diagnosing with my OBD scanner. So, the problem starts with the jeep sounding like its sucking in way more air. Then, the shudder happens and some weird values start to show. The timing becomes erratic and the throttle doesn't know what to do, and the idle rpm's go from 700 up to 1000 and settle. It seems my short term fuel trimmers are almost always acting really weird and when the shudder starts, they don't show up at all. Sorry this is so much to read, but I had to write it somewhere.

Hi I have a 2007 Liberty 3.7L V6, 117,000 miles. Owned it since 67,000 miles. It operated perfectly for the first 30,000 miles and then it started getting a #1 Cyl misfire code P0301. It also seldomly gets a #1 cyl fuel injector circuit open P0201. It must be a very mild fault as the misfire freeze frame data shows it always happens at less than 350 rpm and when cleared it comes back immediately at next startup, cold or hot. So it seems to only happen once on startup as its moving up to regular idle speed. The miss isnt noticeable when driving or idling. Its getting 15.5 mpg fuel mileage. Doesnt burn oil. Doesnt smoke. Has great power. I've changed plugs and coils but no difference. Cleaned air intake, air filter, and ran cleaner through system. I've cleaned and inspected the injector plug and all wires but no difference. Dry / wet compression test of #1, 3 and 5 cylinders all read good: 160 / 175 psi.
I'm wondering if there's a mild wire defect for that injector, or just a flakey connection somewhere. Has anyone tried to use a new set of compatible gauge wires and run them to a place closer to the injector control? I can't see where the wires go though.
I'm not sure if I should just live with this, or troubleshoot it more. I don’t care about the engine light as we don't have emission requirements. Now that I know the compression is good, I'm not so worried about it.
Any suggestions of what to do next? Thanks!

Disconnecting hoses?? Do only when hose is warm, not cold. Cold hoses can break due cold they wont spanand can break instead, Warm up engine if. Or use a hair dryer if cant start. Dont disconnect old cold hoses they will break instead..

TBT If the hoses are so old and brittle they break when they’re cold. You should replace them anyway. It’s best to replace the hose is when things are called for that reason so you can replace brittle worn or breaking hoses. Thanks for commenting great points appreciate your input.

@@RussShawTV Sometimes you just want to do a quick job, not replace them after you break them.. It is a tip.

@@CFITOMAHAWK That’s good tip. 😎👍 I just did that heater hose junction on our Pontiac G6. Technically a shop would’ve recommended me replace all the hoses but I did not do that because it would cost me a fairly good chunk of change. đŸ’žđŸ’°đŸ€‘Hoses I have are old and worn but they’ll do for probably another 30,000 miles.

Yes this fixed the problem. But then again it’s an old jeep. Does it run perfectly, no it has over 200,000 miles on it now. But it’s not hesitating when she goes up hills or on acceleration anymore.
