Thanks for posting. 35 years in the game and still learning. I missed the alignment of the ring and it caused a leak. Had this car for ten years.
Never happened before. Saved a big headache. Almost took it to a shop.

Thanks! I bought a 2014 Durango with 19K miles for my grandson, changed the oil and mucked it up. I was about to get the metal aftermarket part when I saw this video. Thanks for the video . When I saw the filter housing on the Jeep I though sort of reminds me of my TDI Jetta that I driven a lot of miles . I just install o ring and run a screw driver around it a couple times to make sure it's not twisted and lubricant the o ring . These things I do probably are not necessary but it takes just a few minutes.

Then I walked in the door from finishing and YOUR video just happened to be in the 'next' matrix of videos on my screen...so I selected it: OH FUDGE!!! I did place the oring at the highest groove, didn't pay attention when I took off the previous. I fixed it now before I got into any leak issues.

Hey Dave, Here was my situation. Just bought a 2012 3.6. Went to change the oil and filter. Couldnt get the correct filter. Went to 3 different parts stores. All the filters were wrong. Finally called the previous owner only to find they had the filter housing that leaks was replaced and the dealer put in a newer model part! I looked up the part for 2014 model and sure enough the filter was correct. I dont know if this happened to other owners but i just wanted to point this out! Thanks

Excellent job on letting people know about the oil filter issues that these vehicles have. I can see how easy it would be to put the o-ring in the wrong spot on the 2013 to the present filter housing, but it takes a good true mechanic to know that and pay attention to a little detail like that. It goes to show you that not just anyone can change oil in these newer vehicles. My step son and his wife are dealing with this issue right now, they had an oil change done on their 2019 Dodge Caravan and it has been leaking oil ever since they had it done. They took it to a place that does oil changes, transmission fluid, filter flushes and changes and they also detail vehicles any way you want, and so on. I won’t mention the name of the company but they are a nationwide franchise like any fast food restaurant. I sent them this video that you made so they would have the information in their back pocket so they can get the service they deserve.

Hello Dave, good information on the filter
But May I add, when installing the o-ring once the o-ring is in the correct position use a pick and slide it under the o-ring and roll the pick around the cap to make sure it seated properly. Doing this will prevent the o-ring to twist when tightening the cap. Not doing this could cause the o-ring to twist and then it will leak.

I arranged for a quick oil change at a local Chrysler dealership. When I started my 2014 Chrysler 300S after the oil change no warning lights stayed on. Drove a mile on a city street before I reached the freeway, where I am then going 70-plus mph. About 2 miles into the freeway drive the dash lights up like a Christmas tree, along with audio warnings. It seemed too dangerous to stop on the freeway. I got off on city streets as soon as possible, probably within a quarter mile. Shut the engine off and popped the hood in a parking lot and found smoke coming off the exhaust manifold and no visible oil on the dipstick. I called the dealership and told then to pay for a tow and to fix the problem at their expense.
The next day the dealership told me (1) they found some oil on the dipstick when they checked in the morning and (2) the problem was caused by a faulty gasket on the oil filter cap. The oil must of leaked out of the filter canister, onto the top of the engine, before it dripped down to the exhaust manifold. The dealership paid for the tow, another oil change, and cleaned the engine compartment. The engine noise now seems normal and performs as expected.
This could of been due to a defective gasket. It seems more likely the oil change technician misplaced the gasket. All it takes in one person making a mistake.
