In the documentary Making of new album Endless Forms Most Beautiful Tuomas was telling about his songwriting method. He always starts with a story, he has to have at least a good idea what the song is about, (not that he would have the lyrics yet), when he stars composing. He has not written a song jamming, just playing something and then afterwards thinking what the song could be about. When he has composed a whole song, he goes through it, detail by detail, to try and make it better, the instrumentation for example. When he is done, he makes a demo, including vocal melodies with the piano one finger style, for the rest of the band. Band members are given time to listen to the demo, each one on his/her own. Then it's time for rehearsals, during which some changes are made.
Tuomas said that when he came up with the chorus for Storytime he immediately knew, This is it!, and it's the best feeling ever when that happens.

I am always intrigued and interested in hearing your commentary regarding Tuomas' writing style. I find myself wanting to understand harmony, tension and release, and dissonance when it comes to vocal melodies and compositional techniques. You always have something to say regarding these details. I know you need to keep it on a less wonky theory direction. However, I do crave more of the technicalities involved.
    Thanks Mike!

@The Muser Resolute (MTR): Hey brother! Just thought I would let you know, you actually taught me something today!
What that was is, you actually showed me the differences in the vocalists that Nightwish has had: Tarja, Annette, and Floor. And the differences between the three isn't what people think: Rather than style, it's actually a fundamental baseline of sound. What I mean is, Tarja, being an operatic voice, has a very musically major sound (think B-major, D-major, F-major). Annette's voice is musically natural, from a baseline perspective, where her base sound isn't flat or sharp, but is a natural sound. Floor, I've realized, has a minor sound, baseline: D-minor, F-minor, A-minor. And this is why Floor's voice seems to "fit in" with Tuomas' compositions so well! It's because with Floor, her voice is naturally more in the keys that he writes in, which naturally leads to Floor's vocals matching with or fitting the melodic lines he writes. At least, that's what I've heard for the last few years, but I never could explain the "why" of it musically, until now -- so thanks for showing me the various keys in Storytime, as it led me to this revelation about Floor's voice and vocal abilities, and why she seems to be a better fit for the music than Tarja or Annette was.

  • @chadbennett7873
    @chadbennett7873 Před rokem +3

Your analysis is always so spot on, you always explain the WHY and it makes so much sense. We are discussing the greatest composer of my lifetime and you give us a peek inside his head. Please stop apologizing ... you are giving us valuable information to help us understand why we love it, I ALWAYS link to your Ghost Love Score "why" video when people talk about "the note!" It is easily the most brilliant explanation of why a song is so emotional in a technical, yet easily understood manner. I have ridiculous respect and appreciation of your music knowledge. Having not studied music theory, though I wish I had, you explain it in such a way that it makes total sense. Thank you, my friend, you are wonderfully wise.

Great reaction! Don't apologize for analysis. It's reactions from professionals that are the best, bringing some kind of insight to the music, composition, vocals, that we might not otherwise hear. Those are my favorite music reactors. This is my favorite Nightwish song. One of my favorite chorus of all time, musically and also the lyrics and the way Floor sings it. It's amazing. It's really cool to see you pick it up right away. This is the song that made me fall in love with Nightwish and go see them live. It's unreal.
Please check out some Lovebites live. I'd enjoy your reaction to them, as they are my other favorite band. They're power/thrash metal, very fast, with some beautiful metal ballads and progressive things. Amazing solos. If you're into that. They do have some pieces with piano, as one of their lead guitarists is also a fully trained classical pianist. I'm trying to be as vague as possible to heighten the surprise. Holy War, live from Zepp is straight up power metal and usually is the first thing anyone reacts to from them. If you want to go straight over to something with piano and classical influence I would recommend Swan Song (with the Chopin intro) or Frozen Serenade.
I haven't seen your channel before, so I subscribed. I appreciate music professional reaction channels with some analysis. More Nightwish would be great. More anything really.

Huh. So to use a Visual Arts analogy : Tuomas has kind of done a japanese 'ma' (use of blank space/white space) in the early part of the song....he plays those glockenspeil-like ornamentations as if they are the gnarled little tree branches on the edges of a watercolor panel.
They aren't the image, but they are the framework (carrying the Fmin key)
And he uses another typical Nightwish trick (aka "Get the **** outta the way of the singer.. strip it down to bass and drums") in the first line of the verse.
THEN introduce the guitar, but more as a percussive than a melodic instrument.
And just as soon as the listener gets the whole minor/metal feel going, bump it to the major and give that uplift that SOOoooo fits the lyrical content. (I mean, damn, he just freed us up with imagery of chimneys, kites and Peter Pan references...Come On !! I haven't been there since I was a little kid, learning how fun it was to read !!)
Lather. Rinse. Toss In A Little Opera. Repeat.
    Fun stuff.
Thanks for showing a music theory dropout how much he is missing.

I know pretty much zero about music theory, but im always fascinated in hearing musicians like yourself and Doug Helvering giving insight into how certain chord changes fit with the narratives of songs. For instance the minor into major in this song may reflect the obstacles/problems resolving into positive outcomes in the stories we are told in childhood. At the very start you can hear that melody which is a simple semi-tone eother side of the key (i think!?) which gives a very uncertain and unpredictable feeling.... "where is this going to go" kinda thing.
By the way, Nightwish use minor to major quite a lot, e.g. Poet and the Pendulum, Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean to name two

Please take the time(100 minutes) to watch the movie Imaginaerum, (Free with ads, on CZcams), written by Tuomas and a close friend, that this album is all about. Back when Anette was the singer in the band. All of the band members have parts in the movie. It is about an old music composer, fighting to hold on to his memories as he spirals down into the depths of Dementia. Tuomas researched the disease and the movie is a text book look at what happens to the mind. I think you will enjoy a different look into the brilliance of the mind of Tuomas.

I have always felt Tuomas’s “Metal Mozart” nickname is mostly for his use of fairly simple melodies and making them sound either grandiose and so catchy you can’t get them out of your head. Reminds me of the scene in Amadeus when Salieri is discussing Mozart and he plays several pieces of his own music that were popular in their own right but the gentleman did not know them then he plays a simple Mozart piece and the man immediately recognized it and asked if he (Salieri) had written that …he paused and then stated That… is Mozart.

I know you are a musician and can play it on your keyboard, but you don't have to stop the music just to show you can. How about you just watch the video and give your reaction. After that you can go with all your music 'stuff' that I know nothing about. That way I can bug out and not waste any time on your musician speak. I am sure the listeners that know music appreciate your knowledge. Those of us who don't, feel like you butcher the song with all the information that is meaningless to us.
