    Rage is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software. It uses the company's id Tech 5 game engine. Released in October 2011, the game was first shown as a tech demo on June 11, 2007 at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and was officially announced on August 2, 2007 at QuakeCon. On the same day, a trailer for the game was released by GameTrailers.
    The game is set in a post-apocalyptic near future, following the impact of the asteroid 99942 Apophis on Earth. The game has been described as similar to the movie Mad Max 2 and to video games such as Fallout and Borderlands. Influences on the driving and racing gameplay include games such as MotorStorm and Burnout. Players can upgrade their cars with racing certificates won from races. Upon its release, the game had received fair praises from critics and reviewers.

    I remember how overblown the advertising for this game was. In germany they promoted it as being "from the creators of Doom and Quake". Meanwhile Doom and Quake were still banned when Rage came out.

      Reloaded2111 Movies and art are hard to ban because they art. Videogames also only rarely get banned here. The last banned game that comes to mind is Dying Lite. The rating system got a bit less hard in the last couple of years. Wolfensteni: The New Order for example got released here. They only censored all links to Nazis because nazi symbolism is illegal (It's time that Videogames get regarded as art here...). And the game still works because everybody here knows that Wolfenstein is game where you shoot Nazis.
      But banned reall sounds too harsh. In most cases it's just forbidden to advertise and openly sell these games. Owning them through imports etc. isnt illegal.

    • @Meggadezz
      @Meggadezz Před 7 lety +4

      For me, it *doesn't* work because I'd *know* all the time that I get patronized and the enemies are indeed nazis. Not neo-nazis, the third reich nazis. They can shuff that up their asses. It even worked better for me with Red Alert, when they created story elements even within the cut scenes that all units were cyborgs (actually robots), that being the reason they "bleed" oil instead of blood. That being the case for all Command and Conquer games, if I recall correctly.
      But shooting nazis, obviously, them being the 'real deal' and not having them show their symbolism? But every other media is allowed to do that? Fuck off, BPjM.

    • @r3v4n21
      @r3v4n21 Před 7 lety +2

    This game doesn't get the love it deserves despite getting all the hate it deserves.
    It was a feat of it's time for being a tech demo gone off the rails.
    Sure, the ending sucked but when I got there and the credits started rolling I wasn't angry because it was a shite way to end the game. I was just angry there wasn't more game to play.
    I.
    Wanted.
    More.
    Rage.
    and then a week before Bethesda announced Rage 2, I was tweeting at them about when we were going to get more Rage.
    And then the trailers dropped, and I was pumped.
    And then I found out the game didn't pick up where Rage left off.
    And then I found out you weren't the same player character,
    And then I found out the game sucked, thankfully before I bought it.
    I was more pissed off by Rage 2's existence than I was pissed off about any of Rage's shortcomings.
    Rage and Wolfenstein were sacrificed on the alter of R&D for id Software to pump out Doom Eternal having released 2 games with drastic mechanic experimentation that were soundly rejected.
    So.... I'll take Rage being a tech demo over Rage 2 being a nazi zombie fetus that escaped from it's lab.

      Did you ever end up playing Rage 2? People tend to shit on any game that isn’t a ‘masterpiece’ the past few years especially. I had never even heard of Rage but discovered 2 on Game Pass a year or two ago and was surprised at how much fun it was. I got lost in that game just exploring the wasteland, grabbing weapons and powers from the Arks, and taking out outposts. Combat was a lot of fun as well. I even bought the dlc expansion. Story was lackluster, but when I finally played Rage 1 I felt the same there as well, although it is a bit more focused than 2. Bethesda had nothing to do with Rage. ID may have made 1, but it had heavy involvement from Avalanche, as well as their engine, for 2, so it does feel like a different game. I hope they get to make a third because they have great combat and gunplay and some solid ideas to work with. If they could get a compelling story and add in some more flair in the world, it could really be something. Rage 2 was one of my top ‘hidden gems’ though so if you never ended up checking it out, I highly recommend it if you’re ever looking for something to play. Game was awesome, for me anyway. I play a lot of games though and a lot of variety. So it was a welcome change of pace for sure.

      I agree, I really loved the game. My only issue, though, was the ending. I don't have a clear memory of it, I beat it when I was like 13 and never bothered going back to it, but I remember being so excited with all this build up leading to driving to that big base, I finally had the big gun with BFG ammo stocked up for the big fight, then you stand around in the base for a few minutes while something charges up, press a button, and the game just ends. You see a cutscene of a bunch of the bunkers coming out of the ground, then roll credits. The one thing about the ending I vividly remember was being so outraged I literally stood up from my chair, glared down at my TV, and yelled *_"WHAT?!"_*
      I figured there would be an after credits scene or something but no, the game has no real conclusion and it's such a giant let down after the rest of the game was so fun.

    I enjoyed Rage in my first playthrough, because the mechanics were solid enough, though the graphical issues could be distracting and there was this constant feeling that Rage was unfinished. There was always some element of the game that seemed like there was intent to flesh it out, but time constraints or whatever else forced an early wrap up. A part of me wishes we could see the product that could have been were there more time devoted to fleshing it out, but, alas, Rage is still not a bad game, just clearly a casualty of wasted potential.

      @Masterwar15 Před 3 lety +1

      I feel the same, and it has quite a bit of content, ngl
      Maybe it's just the lack of variety in the enemies, or how underutilized the overworld is. More unique zones like the final part of the DLC would've been cool. If I had to point out one of the major flaws is perhaps how useless most of the crafting is, like the turrets that just get one-shotted, and even if they don't, they get destroyed once you try to take them back after they depleted just a bit of it's ammo anyways. Not to mention there's barely any reason to use them anyways, since the game is fairly easy, it's faster to just midlessly run and shoot instead of taking your time getting the mats, making robots to help you and deploying them and then wait for them to follow your pace.

    Well, I loved this game, and I will probably be playing it again this Christmas.
    About the textures - it's a tradeoff. There is a great variety of them and, like Ggg said, you never see the same thing copy-pasted in the game... yet this came with a hefty price tag - harsh compression. And this is why many textures appear very low-res. I believe Carmack once said that an uncompressed version of Rage would be close to one terabyte in size... just try to imagine this.
    But these are all flaws I can forgive because the game is immersive, has a resonable sense of humor, and has the id Software spirit that I've known and loved since 1992 :)

    You say it draws inspiration form Borderlands. This was announced 5 months before Borderlands, and much of the stuff in the final game was already shown then. Though that said, the gun play in this game is superb. But the general story and SP progress was rather dull. Much of the same just to make it seem longer. Little variation of enemies and levels. But the big enemy "the authority" was not even there as such IMO, why even add them, they had more presence in the co-op missions. And the end the game seems rushed to complete the story with tons of lose ends. And when you finally get past the wall you hear so much about with the authority behind it... it's over in less then 15 min and the game is over. Such a fail for 8 years in development. You think they would have time to develop a good story. But instead they had doom and Wolfenstein hidden levels all over.

      Rare was released just under 2 years after borderlands. But was in development longer. When announced they showed a trailer that was more or less what we know and see now. inc the cars "as this started out as a car game, thus so many of the race elements remains", the lollipop store lady, the boomerang weapon, the few monsters they had. You name it. If anything I say they took inspiration form fallout and it's world if you look at the early screens form rage vs the reveal images fallout 3 had. Considering how the early trailers was, god knows what they did for 5 years. Tho Carmack said it went out to be Mad Max with an asteroid. Borderlands, it's setting and graphics even is inspired form a movie called Codehunters. They build their game based on that story, looks, characters and settings almost. I'm gonna be bold and say they were developed at the same time. But did not copy or draw inspiration form each other at all, but form others. Just happened to be the same at the same time.

      Not sure how long before announcement Borderlands had been in development. But rage when announced was considered a finished product. It had a released planned for a short year later. Though then delayed to 2009, and then nothing was heard until late 2010 for what ever reason, tho most suspect coding issues with consoles and the graphic stuff. If you look at some of the later Doom 3 videos by ID. You can see some renders of what looks like the rage cars in the background in late 2002 in one of the interviews. In a keynote by Carmack in 2003 or 2004 he said they were playing around with the idea of a car game and explained how it was to code cars vs weapons. So we know when the idea started. But when it turned into mad max with an asteroid and the rage we know now? No one knows.

So yeah, Rage 2 will be using the id Tech 6 like Doom 4 and Wolf 2. The best part? It won't held down by being an engine pilot game! Which means that id doesn't have to spend too much time "wowing" us with the engine tech demonstrations (Doom 4 has already done that).

    You mention how good the RAGE music is, and I think that's one aspect of video games we can always appreciate regardless of the actual gameplay quality. Like how I recall you stating dislike for Borderlands, Jesper Kyd's soundtrack is phenomenal in the first two. The town of Firestone's theme in BL2 is hauntingly beautiful and made me well up with BL1 nostalgia so hard.

Solid shooting, great work of the designers, ovearall good graphics. It's just damn shame that Rage was supposed to be something great, but turned out to be something decent, and everyone hate it for it.

    too bad you didn't play this game when it was released back in 2011
    it was overhyped as a Fallout 3 killer with all the trailers, demos, interviews, techs, etc...

      @RokushoTheRavager Před 7 lety +7

      At the very beginning RAGE is fucking excellent, but the closer you to get to the finale, the worse it gets. However with a proper sequel though, more ways to keep the gameplay fresh and interesting, maybe a bit more emphasis on vehicle combat (either make the races more enjoyable or don't include them at all because I did not find them fun), better enemy variety, less corridor sections and more open battlegrounds, a story that explains more about The Authority like how they came to be, why they want ark survivors so badly, and one which involves you going to war against them, and a FAR better ending than the BS this game had, it could be like 20X better than this game is.

    This game was made through a very uncomfortable time for id, ZeniMax bought them out mid way through production, causing some Devs to leave and opening the door for Betheseda to get its trolling hands on the promising game. That's why Rage seems so underdeveloped.

    There IS so much more to say about RAGE than you did. You find it repetitive. I loved every bit of it. It's a beyond awesome shooter. Shooting is fun & never gets old. It's ID software at it's best. Driving is fun but I share your thought on the beakon racing shit they did there. The only downsides this game got is Bethesda and how they ruined ID with their non existent marketing & forcing them to rush out the game before ID even could complete the second half of it. You feel like this game could've been so much more. There are many other things to complain about. But I won't do that to make a little contrast to what you had to say about it.
    EDIT:
    and more rant about Bethesda. I can see the thought-pattern here. "Hey, we just aquired the gods of FPS games. Let them produce a shit game for us that copies everything else that is hot on the market right now". I even go so far to say that it's bethesda's fault that ID is in its current identity crisis.

And Fallout 4 just shows how they dont give a crap about how greatly Obsidian improved Fallout 3s gameplay. I mean FO4 doesnt even have random critical hits and skills. Thats just so stupid.

      xbox 360 always held back the potential of ps3. all games that were on 2 discs on 360 were on only one disc on ps3.

    Decided to start playing the game after watching the review. I'm actually enjoying it. More than servicable and with a bit of tweeking, the game still looks gorgeous.
    Gunplay feels satisfying and the drivong is responsive and just very good. No grinding, no levelling, just pure exploration and gunplay.
    No where near the same level of fun as Doom2016, but it's still a commendable effort.

    I loved this game though I know the criticism is well deserved. Thank you for hitting on the animations I was blown away by these when first playing the game.

    Am I the only one here who liked the racing/vehicle combat as much as the first person gunplay?

    Possible the best single player fps in the xbox360 and ps3 era

      true Borderlands 2 is way funnier and if you play it coop is cooler but as a single player and how beautiful it looks for me is the best single player one.
      PD: I've finished borderlands 2 4 times all of them in 2 players coop

      +Fabian Saam Borderlands 2 is trash for autists and people with OCD. And speaking of good jokes, there are none to be found in that game, only cringe.

    This game + FUEL + high frequency textures to complement the megatextures + some extra content between outposts = WIN
