I miss this era when there were just so many games being released. So many single player shooters with decent budgets. Doesn't happen anymore. Single player shooters are either smaller indie stuff with low cost production or AAA but they take years and years to come out, and even then it's very very rare. I can only think of the new Stalker now and that Atomic Heart game.

Man, I use to play the crap out of the demo for this game. It was oddly satisfying sliding up stairs.

That's a thing, games like this can be called "wasted potential". Clearly some cool ideas and talented artistic approach, but it's just doesn't stitching up together with the rest parts: clunky gameplay, zero progression, problematic technical side, lousy writing. Usually because majority of developers had no experience, which is exactly what happened with Wet by Behaviour Interactive who was working on downgraded ports and less violent games.
Playing the demo? Boy, not very often a comment takes me back over 10 years.

I love Wet. I must have finished this 500 times when it came out. Everyone said it was stupid and I was crazy but I wouldn't stop. Watching it today only makes me wanna play it again.

I dug it out this week and played it again. I still love it despite its flaws.
Its a great game. Its cheesy, basic, but fun. People go into this expecting some sort of modern FPS or something, but it is basically just Tony Hawk pro murderer.
Not enough feet to be like a Tarantino film.
This is also my main criticism of the game, with how dumb and juvenile it is, it was strangely tame in the fanservice department. Hardly any innuendo dialogue, no tits & ass, and no paying homage to the man himself with a proper feet scene.

Honestly if that was what they were going for with the title, "Wetwork" with her drenched in blood for the cover art would've worked way better. This is one of those games that most people played the demo but never actually bought the game
It was deliberately trying to make it look sleazy and edgy like grindhouse movies of the 70s.

Reminds me of somewhat of a Grindhouse Film and two other games “Total Overdose” and “Stranglehold” to me. I remember playing this a long time ago, underrated

Picked it up during qurantine, I really enjoyed it. The melee is a bit clunky but the shooting and rage mode moments are a blast once you get a flow of things. The car sequences are horrific on the hardest difficulty but manageable. I'm hoping for a spiritual sequel to this

Sure I heard that It's fun and all but there's the thing with the final boss being just a QTE. Heard that they ran out of budget or something.
Sly 4 also had a shitty qte final boss yet it's a really good game.
All of the bosses were QTEs so it was just them being lazy while at the same time trying to keep the game stylistic and flashy. Also how do they ran out of money on a game that looks like it cost them a sandwich and a bottle of water to produce?

Fun fact, there was supposed to be a live action movie of this game with Eliza Dushku reprising her role, obviously nothing every came of it(she talks about in the behind the scenes for the game, how they're also making a movie) You have to wonder how that would've turned out.

2009 is the year of underrated gems. The Saboteur is one of my favorites of that generation, also has that exploitation movie feel.

in all honesty this game looks pretty cool from the outside, i just love to see old game that have cool cutscenes and quick time events that are pretty well animated. RE5 is a glowing example of extremely high quality cutscenes that look amazing to this day, and this game looks pretty cool as well. Though all the negatives you mentioned do seem do drag the game down quite a bit.

The soundtrack is mostly psychobilly, not punk. And to be honest, it goes pretty good with the overall aestherics they looked for the game

I remember picking this up at gamestop for like 5 bucks because I didn't have anything to play at the time. I was shocked at how amazing it was. A adrenaline rush throughout.

@@iamarabicandiloveamericanp7137 yeah, at first it was awesome... but then the forced training sections came in... and then the awful visuals... and the cringe inducing dialogue..... and to top it ALL off, I can NOT choose to replay action sections without re-doing those bad things ALL over again. Honestly, if I could have the OPTION to replay the Action sequences, this game would be a BILLION times better.

I remember playing the demo for this and thinking it was the coolest thing in the history of ever. Then I rented it a few months later and thought "yep, enough of this" about 2 hours in.
Check out Jet Li's Rise to Honor. It's an old PS2 game that starred Jet Li and it was very similar to Stranglehold. I loved all the environmental kills when I was a kid, would love to replay it and watch a review of it.
That game is still to me the greatest combat system in a video I have experiences. I wish games would ditch the Arkham combat and use Rise to Honors analog fluid controls instead.
Just imagine if this had the destruction seen in John Woo films mixed with the strong writing of Max Payne. I could easily see it working if the devs focused on those elements.

Man, holy shit. I've been waiting for this video...not necessarily from you (sorry Gman), but just waiting for someone to finally acknowledge that this game existed. I don't remember much about it because I played it when I was a horny teenager and had the hots for the main character, and also: the soundtrack fuggin slaps. Especially The Arkhams contributions, "Insane" and "She Lost Control", those were my JAMS for a long time...ah man, that reminds me, I need to put that OST back on my playlist.

He being too harsh on the game it was a blast short but fun played it to death and still play it every now and then and the soundtrack was bloody brilliant

The music in this game every song is describing Rubi's character and personaliy. Anyome that doesn't recognize this just shows that they do not pay attention to the actual lyrics

@@MrQwertysystem Was it though? Forced motion controls and a very basic move set didn't really make it a great brawler. I remember reviews being very on the fence with this. I loved it though, only the bad save system was irredeemable for me.

I remember genuinely liking some of the music of this game, it had a few songs that slap. I also really liked the demo, but playing the whole game got pretty repetitive, but was pretty fun while it lasted.

I was thinking about this game about a month ago and it's great to see other people had a great time. I mostly agree with what you've said, the core gameplay loop is rather addictive but there's no longevity to the game, got very bored by the second time I wanted to play it. Great video.
It's pretty dang fun. And given it's old as heck now, probably get is super cheap. Well worth a play if you haven't.

@@TrezCFB i do the same.. but then autopilot turns off when the forced training scenes came in. Yeah those parts were NOT as fun as shooting and slicing bad guys, and to make stuff worse the game doesn't have a level chooser which is insane since EVERY game of the time have a Chapter select option... that was so painful, I was just agonizingly waiting to GET to the action. Games should AT LEAST have a level choosing option.

@@Gggmanlives It's not that hard to comprehend what the songs are saying while fighting lol there isn't that much lryics to the songs so you can't even miss what they say. It's really neat how the songs tie into Rubi's character traits and each song reflects off of Rubi's personality. I've replayed this game a thousand times so maybe It's just me with the songs on loop in my head lol It's a shame most don't really notice it.
Yes, replaying it a thousand times would probably do that. Most people don't listen to lyrics in the midst of intense gameplay.

I loved this game. I just recently stumbled across it while I was looking for something in my bedroom and I am about to play through it again.
For me personally it was one of those games that I knew very little about (if anything at all) when I first saw it and bought it because I saw it going cheap in the store, and after playing it I was so glad that I discovered it.
It seems to be a lot harder nowadays to discover videogames that way and there seems to be less hidden gems and for the most part either great games or terrible games. I never took notice of official reviews or opinions of official game reviewers because there were too many times when I played and loved a game that had been officially ripped apart or vice versa.
Nah the music is still dope. The Rockabilly vibe is dope.

I loved this game and it's sound track
I bought WET cause of this. It took some getting used to but now I'm having fun. The music is great as long as I mute it in game and play the soundtrack on Spotify. The game becomes much less disjointed that way and I can enjoy full songs.
I remember playing this game so much and loving every second of it when I was younger, now I gotta go find my copy.

This game was really something else, the soundtrack was exceptional. I still listen to some of the bands it introduced me to today. The gameplay was a ton of fun, the story was pretty forgettable though. It was really just meant to be good dumb fun and it did a fine job with that.

Yeah i played this when i was younger and i always thought ruby had a good voice, but not for her character archetype, hell i played this before i ever even *saw* buffy the vampire slayer, but i always saw ruby's character not as a failure in acting/selling the character it's 100% a failure of direction, people that clearly didn't know what they designing were probably too starstruck... or horny to actually know what they're doing in terms of audio direction with Ms. Dushku, cause she has a cool design, a sick sword and a cool voice, but all of it is undersold when everything she says is either extremely underwhelming or so predictable that you could act out any cutscene she was in, in real time, having never seen them prior.
this game was always such a shitty b-movie that i enjoyed it more as a teenager getting buzzed to all hell and laughing at it with my friends, and obviously thirsting over the main character lmao, wet was such a strange title to me cause it clearly had plans of *what* it wanted to do with itself and just seemingly forgot about it entirely about 30 minutes in, oh and the red screen stuff used to give me wicked headaches after prolonged hours of playing it, idk how playtesters never got headaches during development
