    Max Payne 3 is a third-person shooter video game developed by Rockstar Studios and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on 15 May 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; a Microsoft Windows port was released on 31 May 2012, followed by an OS X port on 20 June 2013. The game is the first entry in the Max Payne series since 2003's Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, developed by Remedy Entertainment.
    The game is played from a third-person perspective. Throughout the single-player mode, players control Max Payne, a former detective who has become a vigilante after the murder of his wife and daughter. Nine years after the events of the second game, Max becomes employed as a private security contractor in Brazil, but quickly becomes entangled in a quest filled with death and betrayal. An online multiplayer mode is included with the game, allowing up to 16 players to engage in both cooperative and competitive gameplay in re-creations of multiple single-player settings.
    As part of their research for the game's setting, the developers conducted field research around São Paulo throughout development and captured footage for the design team. Development duties were shared between many of Rockstar's studios worldwide. At release, it was acclaimed by many reviewers, with praise particularly directed at the story and action. Max Payne 3 received high sales, shipping approximately three million units in the first week of release. It was nominated for multiple year-end accolades from several gaming publications, winning a variety of them.

    I have to say that Max Payne 3 has some of the best visual feedback I've seen in a game. Just the fact that every shot bullet is a detailed polygon model is just fascinating.

      SkyOut Max Payne 3 is not better gameplay wise. It became a fucking cover based shooter, you can only have three weapons at a time, constant interruptions destroying the flow of the game and so on.

      On a good pc+ssd you can skip quite a lot of them. So yes. That's probably the reason. And Max Payne 3 is pretty much the only game which has absolutely no stop (excluding the first loading time) if you're playing the story mode.

    saying the events of 3 "don't change max as a person" is INSANE. he literally gets sober and finally accepts his family's passing because of it. also shooting that mob boss' son wasn't a "stupid mistake", it was an emotional reflex because max has trauma over women around him dying and blaming himself for it.

    I know it's not the classic film noir comic book style, but Max Payne 3 is STILL noir - it's basically Man On Fire : The Game. It takes a lot of the visual and thematic cues on modern neo-noir films.

It checks all the boxes.

    • @Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard
      @Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard Před 2 lety +5

      @@ciaranperry4677 There isn't always a femme fatale in noir stories. But a gritty investigator is common. Plus you have Max's narration which is noir-esque. I personally think it does classify as noir and I would be curious which 500 films you think are noir because I doubt there are that many unless you are including some really obscure ones or neo-noir. I've been a hard core fan of the genre for decades and probably own half of the classic noir films from Maltese Falcon to Touch of Evil which roughly covers the time period of 1941 - 1958 of the classic noir. Max Payne is noir through and through. Don't let the action of the game fog your judgement. The essence of the story is noir or rather neo-noir.

    With what you said about the Brancos being unlikable, I thought it contrasted really well with Max and helped give him depth in that he was going out of his way to try and help people that he didn't like. (SPOILERS) Even after his employer and the girl he was trying to save died, he kept trucking on regardless of how life threatening it was to continue. He had no stakes in being there anymore and could have left Sao Paulo at any time, but he didn't. Also, for a first in the series (outside of the secret ending for MP2) he finally saves a woman.

I know a lot of people hate on my opinion because this one takes Max Payne out of the neo-noir setting, but ask yourself this. What's left for Max in New York/New Jersey? Nothing. Nothing but pain and misery so it makes he'd want to get as far the hell away from that place as he can, lucratively. Also, what we're they gonna do with noir setting? More mafia and New York scumbags? C'mon, it was an excellent change up in the series rather than just the same old shit.

    The movie they wanted to make is Tony Scott's Man of Fire. The problem is Tony Scott already made it. Not only the story, but the visual style is also "borrowed". The differences are so minute that I can't call it "inspired", it straight out copies the film.

      Okay I watched Man on Fire recently, and the movie definitely inspired the game in its look and atmosphere and max being a drunk, but the rest is very different. Max is not out to take revenge on some little girl that he loves and doesn't sacrifice himself at the end for said little girl. yeah he's a bodyguard, like in the movie, but here the way the story and the characters play out is different

    • @dosnostalgic
      @dosnostalgic Před 7 lety +3

      Errr... Is this a "it is not exactly the same, therefore it is entirely different" kind of comment? Of course there are differences. Otherwise it would have been Man of Fire: The Game. But the visuals, the atmosphere, and pretty much the entire setup was directly lifted. And some scenes throughout with the protagonists drunkenly stumbling around the room are present as well. It doesn't need to be an *exact* 1 to 1 carbon copy to be a rip off.

    I love the first two Max Payne games, but any desire I had to play the third game was killed by the first gameplay video I watched. A couple minutes of gameplay and then five minutes of unskippable cutscene! The in-level cutscenes in games like Jedi Academy and Elite Force II drove me crazy. There's no way I'd be able to play a game like MP3 without wanting to put my fist through the screen. What the fuck is wrong with game developers today? It's like their gaming experience goes back all of six months. Did they even look at the previous games? Did they think "Yeah, the old games were really good, but let's flush all that down the toilet and force our own crappy ideas on players instead!"?

      Frankly, I hate in-level cutscenes. They break up the flow of the game and destroy your sense of immersion. And in almost every case, it would be much cooler to experience whatever is happening from the viewpoint of your character rather than just watching an FMV play. In my opinion, loading an FPS game with tons of FMVs, especially in the middle of levels, is just a lazy way to try and extend the playing time.
      And if I'm playing that part of the game for the second time, those cutscenes better be skippable. Forcing users to sit through an FMV that they've already seen is really poor game design, especially in today's games, that usually don't have save anywhere and instead force you to rely on checkpoints. Which is another thing I despise. Just saying.

I honestly can't believe that they did away with the comic book cutscenes - that style of video game storytelling was 100% unique to Max Payne and that fact that they got rid of it is incomprehensible....it changes the entire atmosphere of the game. Also, I usually play games at the hardest difficulty, but DAMN, this one caught me off guard. I have been playing for maybe two hours and I have died at least 40 times....this is some punishing shit. All that being said I am enjoying the game immensely...it's just a bit disappointing how Rockstar have tried to make it their own instead of sticking to the style and aesthetic of Max Payne 1/2 that we all know and love

    As for the setting and the Noir detective feel of the 1st 2 games, I thought I would miss it so much before the game released but once I actually played it I found it to be a really dark, violent and depressive tale for the character and it was quite fitting.
    As a HUGE Max Payne fan, I thought MP3 was a blast and that it really did live up to the hype.

    With writing main characters don't have to change. but there actions have to have an impact or change other characters. Snake plisken for example never changes but his actions lead to big changes and his acts change other characters. This is a type of writing you can do when you don't really want a massive change or a slower gradual mutigamed/story arc. And TBF there are intractables in MP1 and 2 were you get mini cutscenes that change the flow quite a bit

    three weapons at a time is new for the series, but you have to appreciate the level of detail there. You can have a pistol out and Max will hold the big weapon in his other hand and then in the cutscene he will actually place that weapon somewhere (like on the table or against the wall). Like you don't have a limit of three weapons because of gameplay, you have this limit because it's what he can hold on him. That level of attention to details in what's basically a test for a GTA V engine is insane.

      It's true that many cutscenes are skippable, but the game doesn't load the rest of the game quick enough to skip them immediately which i can get annoying, but not game breaking. Though what i really enjoy about running through Max Payne 2 is that you can skip both the graphic novels and the ingame cutscenes so quickly and get to the action so repeat playthroughs are quite enjoyable.

    Some quotes from the previous games
    The gilding on the mask had cracked to reveal the rot underneath.
    Fraternizing with the enemy. I had stepped over the edge. The cartoon moment when the gravity waits for the coyote to realize his mistake before the plunge.
    The past is a puzzle, like a broken mirror. As you piece it together, you cut yourself, your image keeps shifting. And you change with it. It could destroy you, drive you mad. It could set you free.
    Death is inevitable. Our fear of it makes us play safe, blocks out emotion. It's a losing game. Without passion you are already dead.
    The genius of the hole: no matter how long you spend climbing out, you can still fall back down in an instant.
    1+2's writing are far better than 3. 3 is a disaster.

    Much of the cinematics are going during the load screens between levels, which brilliantly maintains the pacing of the story in my opinion. Otherwise many of the mid session cutscenes can be skipped from what I can tell. But yes it is quite frequent.

    For modern adaptation of a classic legend, MP 3 is a near masterpiece since most modern versions of old games get ruined by "modern" mechanics stuff while MP3 "mostly" keeps all the formulas intact. MP 1 is still the best. I'm lucky to be in my golden age during the golden era of gaming.

    I played this game a few months ago and indeed, it was brilliant despite the flaws. The flaw (on the PC version) of the load times being rather long (and thus you can't skip cutscenes easily) are pretty bad, since they also show up in the extra (arcade) modes when I played it but yeah. Positives outweigh the negatives for me and the ending is really satisfying. Also that soundtrack, man.

      ***** I beat it twice on 360, and the aiming felt completely off. It had some weird acceleration that just never felt right. Either way, it can be done but the controls are just so much more smooth, responsive and precise with a mouse.

    • @youn00ber
      @youn00ber Před 9 lety +1

      +Louis Haigh He's not wrong, the aiming is sluggish and there's weird acceleration. I still prefer controller for this game though, just because I'm not landing headshots with every shot (which kind of devalues a headshot IMO). I wish Rockstar would take lessons from say, the Uncharted games when it comes to aiming, because all their games have pretty shitty aiming and often use auto-aim to make up for it (which is coincidentally terrible in MP3)

    • @MDUmairKh
      @MDUmairKh Před 9 lety +1

      +DrearierSpider1 MP3 is designed for controllers. That weapon wheel, FOV, slow paced gun fights, limited inventory etc were all designed for controllers in mind. Of course aiming is better with mouse but it wasn't used to its fullest potential like in first two games. If you move camera so quickly in MP3 with mouse, the game breaks and Max starts to behave awkwardly.

    I've grown tired of most shooters having enemies that do not flinch when shot unless they are shot in key pixel in their head. It might make more sense when the enemies are zombies. But seeing humans get shot in the neck, heart, or even their legs and then react like a mosquito bit them, is ridiculous. Max Payne games have only emphasized this silliness.

    • @DiegoAlanTorres96
      @DiegoAlanTorres96 Před 9 lety

    • @Curt_Randall
      @Curt_Randall Před 9 lety +1

      A better question is why do they bother rendering entire enemy bodies? May as well just show a bunch of enemy human head targets floating around the screen waiting to be shot. What? But that's not realistic you might say? Is it realistic for an enemy to get shot in the legs with several bullets and not fall down or even stop running? Basically I was just saying after killing 1000's of enemies, it would be nice to see something different the way an enemy can be shot and killed.

    Definitely my least favorite of the three. The game play just seems so limited. You can't jump unless it is to hurdle over something, you can't throw grenades or moltov cocktail, and the playing area between cut scenes is small, but even within those small areas doors will close and lock behind you on the their own, further segmenting the playing areas.

    @Gggmanlives Great review as per usual. I'm glad that the 3rd Max Payne review ended on a high note. Just an FYI, the loading screens on Max Payne were supposedly hidden during the cinematics, hence why you couldn't skip them as the cinematic began. I think the short cut-scenes are skip-able yet the longer ones are not. Either way I get where you're coming from. It's irritating doing a second playthrough and having to endure long cut-scene that you've seen before.

    i got the same feeling with the walking segments in last of us. they go on and on and often don't even further the story in any way. i still loved the last of us and loved max payne 3 but these are examples of game devs trying to mirror cinematic films while making a game and just sort of making an uneven experience. noticed you had gold guns through out the review so you probably ended up doing some of the single player challenges. those were pretty fun. great review.
