  • We attempt to do diesel performance modifications on our 411cc diesel go kart, but everything we look at on the engine has some kind of factory defect! We have: a gap in the intake where the engine can suck dirty air in, an oil leak, an exhaust leak, the whole setup with the torque conveter weighs 130 pounds, and all kinds of red flags with the flywheel. The casting on the flywheel is very poor, after just an hour of run time, we have a broken fin on the flywheel, and we noticed air pockets in the casting, meaning that this diesel engine's flywheel could break apart at high or moderate RPM. We still have fun doing go kart wheelies and doughnuts!

If I duplicate the iron flywheel in aluminum 1:1 it will still be pretty heavy compared to what you’d use on a gas engine, and will keep the engine’s power pulses smooth enough, but it’ll be half the weight, so it’ll rev from 0-3800 in 2/3 the time. Still need to get a lighter primary spring, maybe even lower weights, on the primary clutch to get it to start hooking up at closer to 1100 instead of 2500 haha.

Hey guys, machinist here. Please use collets when milling, most drill chucks are pressed onto a taper since all they see is vertical load while drilling. So the side load or horizontal load you create while milling causes the drill chuck to slowly walk out of that taper, either injuring you or destroying your part. Be safe 🤘

With as porous as that casting is, I wouldn’t want to stand next to it running anything over idle. These engines are VERY over square for a diesel, around 1.2 bore/stroke ratio. That along with their high compression lets them make decent power at higher revs. Some performance diesels can make peak power around 5k and rev even higher yet.
