Resident Evil Village's Ending Explained

- There’s a lot to digest during the final hours of Resident Evil Village. So let’s get into the nitty gritty of all this, and explain exactly what went down, and the ripple effect it has on the rest of the series.
Resident Evil Village opens a huge can of moldy worms in its final hours that recontextualizes the entire franchise. It's also an ending that leaves many cliffhangers to explore in the future.
Ethan Winters has been through a lot since his trek through the bayou in Resident Evil 7, rescuing his missing wife Mia from the Baker household. As it turned out, Mia was working for a crime syndicate known as The Connections, which were responsible for looking after the bioweapon known as Eveline. It was Mia's job to be a caretaker for Eveline. Once Ethan and Mia escape the grasps of Eveline in the end of RE7, with the help of Chris Redfield, they're put into hiding in a European village so The Connections cannot find them, and during that time, Ethan and Mia start a family with their daughter Rose. All was well, that is until Chris Redfield shows up and murders Mia, and kidnaps Rose. But that's only the beginning of what this ending begins to explain.
In the above video, we dissect the motives behind Chris Redfield, and most importantly, the game's antagonist Mother Miranda, and the impact she has on the game's lore (which is very deep). We'll also piece together how Umbrella Corporations fits into Village, and the ripple effect that has on its other games, as well as future ones. Also, is Lady Dimitrescu actually a vampire? Watch the video to find out.

I always suspected that Ethan was infected, but I didn't think he actually died and was just another mold monster like the bakers. Now the "Welcome to the family son" hits differently.
It literally is revealed that hes infected in re7. Idk why so many people didnt catch that.

There is nothing ‘obvious’ about him being dead all long.

INSANE FORESHADOWING
Even the hag was Miranda, and she knew the whole time 😅
@@apockypocky2345 I feel like mother miranda was taken advantage by the connections(one of Umbrella's competition), she said they assisted her, more like they just want her creation and make it into a weapon, the connections didn't really intend to revive her daughter eva. I think there is a mole in chris team or the BSAA, there was that guy or at least the one who informed him said "there are no signs of genome editing" but i beg to differ , BSAA started acting suspiciously so it's not that far fetch. Maybe that's why ethan and her daughter is special because it might be an improved version of the megamycete that was inside eveline. And maybe it plays a part on why mother miranda was weakened by rose. Or maybe eveline interfered with the revival of eva since technically rose is the daughter of ethan so in some way she is connected to eveline but also eveline is weak enough that she cannot possess rose. I just imagine that after those events in RE8, rose could have intense connection between eva being her guardian angel and eveline her demon since eva and eveline have the strongest connection to the megamycete and that might be a factor in how much presence they have inside rose's mind. That's just my theory though.
You also got to remember when Lady D tasted his blood and said "Hmmmm starting to go a little stale" that's cuz his body was already dead and just regenerating with the mold.
I know Miranda can shapeshift, but shapeshifting into grandma reminds me of Eveline.
@@RiderGeats Oh no that wasn't shapeshifting, she ages rapidly. Her being a failure was she didn't revive into eva but in the eyes of the connections she was a successful BOW. I think the connections intentionally designed it that way without informing mother miranda and a mole in the BSAA might be covering up that fact. Remember she was designed to be a BOW by the connections not restoring the eva as they promise. That's my theory at least.

Let's talk about Capcom's gret marketing making us think that Lady D was the main villain and that Chris turned evil.
I don't agree. Chris being the villian? I mean, he seemed to be but, is Chris, he can't be. And about lady D, I think they just tryed not to spoil the game so they made a teaser that was based on the 1/5 of the game, and It went surprisingly good with all the memes and everything so they just continued with it.
@@sebaloko99bt There’s nothing to agree or disagree about. In the trailers, Chris is portrayed as a villain who betrays Ethan. Even the game’s cover (my profile pic) makes it seem like Chris is either a villain or double agent of some kind with the half man half Lycan image.
What is there to talk about?
@@LegendaryManSlayer93 I interpreted the cover as symbolism of Redfields rogueness in RE8 as he is leading his own team and is freelance. It's def insinuated in trailers he's an enemy though, just a classic red hering
@@VeinEnergy yeah i like your interpretation. It’s probably what capcom was thinking too. Chris being a “lone wolf” among actual wolves. Like i said, I thought the image suggested he could be a double agent aiding the Lycans and a “benevolent” organization.
i love that the backstory of a lot of resident evil villains is actually pretty damn sad
I did enjoy that both 7 and 8's villains are very sympathetic. The conversation w Jack and Ethan in 7 shows this, but each Lord in 8 truly had no choice in what and who they became. The least sympathetic of the 4 being Dimistrecu. Moreau only wants approval and acceptance, Heisenberg was forced into his position and resents Miranda over it, and Donna is mentally ill (also noted with "low brain function") therefore may not truly understand what is going on. I especially felt sad over Moreau and Heisenberg after their sections. Even Miranda is unable to accept her loss and grieve properly, causing her to do what she has to regain what she has lost.
I also see a metaphor for toxic family dynamics, hereditary trauma and the horrors of becoming a new parent within the context of this game as well.
@@bandardantoly i second everything you just said
@@bandardantoly @peylo66 now that i think abt it, Miranda's "family" is like the exact opposite as Ethan's family, while Ethan is grateful to have Rose and will do anything to save his daughter but Miranda couldn't accept her daughter's death even tho she already have 4 children She could've raise and love properly

Yep, good ol re5 😂
How the heck did he know though
@leonardo swain possible, or maybe he had a connection with Umbrella or someone in the BSAA, since that time Chris was in BSAA and they became corrupt or something
@@otsoga0105 Just a nice reference, I bet capcom doesn’t care to explain it
Why does he say "Mirander" instead of "Miranda"?
If Chris wanted to protect the Winters, maybe putting them right next door to Miranda's HQ wasn't the best idea
Yeah but Miranda would have not get hold of Ethan and Rose if Chris didn't put them next door in that village
You guys have good reasons Chris should have not put them near her castle then less men and people wouldn't be dead in front of Ethan he didn't need to relive that nightmare
from that what i understand Chris didn't knew exact location of Miranda HQ and the syndicate when he put Ethan in village.
also Chris tried to stop Miranda in Ethan House. so even if he knew Miranda is there he couldn't attack openly so Ethan and Rose won't get killed by his reckless actions. and he had to stay put till his squad arrives to have best chance on doing things right and saving them.
i don't belive that Chris used them as bait to lure Miranda. (but it's only my opinion)
because as in video is told he had no clues about syndicate.
Also Miranda realize how precious Rose is after sometime after her birth so she kidnapped Mia and shapeshift into her to check if her suspicions about rose are true.
After her cover was blown by Chris and wolf pack, she just kidnapped Rose.
in my eyes in chopper when you see chris he slams his hand against wall.
if you take this as emotional thing he was pissed on him self that he couldn't save Ethan and everything started coz of him and his decision where to send Ethan with Mia.
also his decision was made right after rescue in RE7. so lets call it 2,5 years before Village coz they had to take medical threatment. (and if rose had 6 months when RE8 starts that means only that they lived around 2 years in peace).
so blaming Chris about something about what he had no idea is just pointless.
btw it's only my point of view.
@@aeoyndjuric1679 you got a point there
Him big, not smart

Shouldn’t it be: “I’m always moldy.”
I think the timeskip isn't really that much. I reckon that due to her powers, rose actually aged quicker than usual. And evidence of this is on the rose flask. You can see that the developers put a remark that says "Warning:not being given serum will result in rapid aging." Game developers wouldn't put that detail in the game unless they want to imply it's a possibility.
Good point. Evelin had a problem with aging too, she aged too quickly. So it’d make sense if Rose didn’t age properly either
The "rapid aging" for the flasks meant that her body parts would deteriorate if they weren't given preservatives.
Isn’t rose meant to be the “perfect” version though ?
@@thecommentsofyoutube7265 Exactly the point. So this comment contradicts Rose's powers.

@@kakarrot5115 damn.
I bet 5 bucks he is still alive
I just find it ironic that the children's tale the main bad guy was reading to the baby was clear foreshadowing. All the way down to the mythical beings actually being clones of the 4 lords. After beating the game and hearing the ending of the story I would have NEVER picked that book to read to the child if I were in Miranda's shoes
I feel the book was made by mother Miranda to try and tutor rose into what she wanted and the true ending was made as the result of ethans fight against her
My explanation to this odd behaviour of Miranda giving up her secrets was sheer confidence in her ability to defeat Ethan, and at the same time the insanity that she was not speaking to rose, but her own daughter and thusly inviting her to her "kingdom". It kind of makes sense if you consider the lengths that she goes to in the game.
It's also a parallel to rose' story, ass in the credit scene it ends with the father(ethan) showing up to fight the witch while the mother frees the child from.the mirror and flees, while the father sacrifices himself so they can escape
7&8 together have to be the most well written RE stories in the main series. A great arc.
Idk about that dude, the original trilogy with Wesker is pretty incredible
A lot of players missed the earliest "hint" of Ethan's true nature. When he first got into the village, his hand was cut from a barbed wire. When he crawl under a fallen cabinet, you can see his hand completely healed. No cut marks. It was a little hard to see because of the blood on the floor that he touched.
It made a little cutscene of Ethan looking at his bloody hand, but I didn't noticed the cut was fully healed.
Another hint, when Ethan was captured by the daughters to present to Lady D, we see that he ripped his right hand off the hook. A little later, when we first see one of the daughters roaming the castle, the part where you have to drop down the dungeon, it was shown that Ethan's right hand is completely healed - no scar of the ripped part.
I thought it was clear he was infected by just being able to see eveleine in re7 and speak to jack baker. Like how else could he have spoke to jack if he wasn’t mold infected?
@@thecommentsofyoutube7265 yeah it's obvious that Ethan was indeed infected in Re7, but we didn't know that the Ethan in Re7 has been a dead man all along

The entire game I was thinking, how the hell is Ethan still alive
@@Quiqueleal85 I thought the same way! Damn I felt so stupid just thinking that!
Ethan is not a BOW...He was killed but the didn't die then cause the mold infected him but his consciousness was still intact that's why he didn't turn into mold monsters like RE7 back then and able to survive and He wasn't fully infected, he was partially infected otherwise he would have turned into those ugly monsters after taking so much damages

Why pester Leon about it?
@@zonatedspore97acamas It's a meme or a joke called the Redfield lineage.

Best Resident Evil story of the series. Love how they did such a good job expanding the lore. I also get the feeling that seeing Rose as a teenager doesn't necessarily mean over a decade have past. She simply could've grown incredibly rapidly like Eveline did in RE 7
eveline always wanted a dad since mia was her "mommy" she didnt know mia had a husband so thats why she did jack. then when ethan came and died by jack baker evelen ressurected him with the mold because she was her real dad in her eyes. thats why jack says " Im her dad and now she wasnts ethan to be"
Let’s not ignore the fact that Rose was reborn right before the last boss fight with Miranda. I think we can’t disregard that scene. Something happened to rose right there when she came out of the mold.
Sure
It is because she is more powerful than Miranda. Heisenberg said it.
But who was in the flasks? Can someone explain? So she really killed rose, put her in the flasks and then she came out of the mold?
She is Eveline reincarnation. And I think she also has memories of Ethan as in that post credit scene she said "I know" while smiling. And that's why she is disgusted with her former live as she got angry when that agent called her Eveline.

I got real suspicious when he just put his hand back on and it fused with his arm lol
So now we've got 3 perfect beings in the RE world sherry birkins with the G virus jake with uroboros and now Rose with mold I'm curious if they'll do something big with these characters 👀
the RE:vengers have assembled
You're forgetting Manuela and Natalia.
@@breastmilkgaming 😂😂
I legit came to say the same thing!
@@0909Alz oh snap I forgot about them too!
Idk why, when they didn't show Ethan's face, I keep thinking his face would look like Ethan from Heavy Rain lol

Showing wesker when talking about spencer will likely confuse a lot of people lol
It’ll only confuse the casual fans who play these games cuz of the graphics🤦🏻♂️
shhh let them be confused
@@NealBoss Thats a good thing, if they're confused they'll either leave confuse or fall down the rabbit hole of lore this game has.
@@freshlymemed5680 Lol some of them started with RE2 Remake and want Capcom to remake the first game again along with 4 cuz of the controls smh
When I found that note from Spencer, I freaked out.
I definitely nerded out hardcore. I love how they expanded the lore like that.
Yea you’re reading the whole thing like yea, ok, than pop off in the end.
Same here.
Best plot twist IMO
This was the best ending resident evil has had in a very long time… well deserved for the struggle we went through
Wow, this is such an insightful video. Thanks for sharing the deep depth of explaining the storyarc. I was so confused how the hell Ethan can attach his hand back after getting severed by Lady D. It makes so much sense when Lady D mentioned Ethan's stale blood after she drank from his left palm.
Maybe we'll get another Chris dlc, but instead of being set after the base game, it will be more in the style of Separate Ways from RE4, where you play as chris sneaking around the village while ethan was busy with the four lords
i feel like that would kinda be a waste of a dlc. we saw chris on like 2 or 3 occasions during the main story. i would much rather them do a chris dlc after the main story ends. someone mentioned doing a dlc of chris going to the bsaa hq in europe. i would love to see the new re engine in a city environment. whatever capcom does next with RE, im excited i want more so bad.
Chris isint a member of the BSAA anymore, at the end of RE 7 he joined blue umbrella. A PMC founded by former Umbrella employees who had no idea about the kind of research they were doing. Just a quick correction I understand that the people who wrote the script may not have picked up on that in 7
Also jack killed ethan when he first jumped him, not force feeding him the meat. Besides Ethan never ate it
Chris was working with Blue Umbrella on behalf of the BSAA, that’s confirmed in the Not A Hero DLC. He was working with both orgs.
Incorrect, he’s still BSAA in RE7, and ran that mission jointly with Blue Umbrella. Chris was brought in the mission due to his expertise with BOWs. In the Baker Incident Report, Chris took the BSAA’s Hound Wolf Squad and went rogue to investigate Miranda. It’s implied Chris knows about the BSAA’s dealings.
_Chris isint a member of the BSAA anymore_
Chris is still BSAA. see Baker Incident Report.
Chris did not join blue umbrella, he worked with them in re7....
Lets give a round of applause for the best father in the entire resident evil series, Ethan Winters!
Makes me love this game even more. Thanks!
At 13:00 the figure is the back is literally Ethan, now when I say that I mean it is literally the model for Ethan it can be seen in photo mode but whether it is meant to be Ethan or just a reused asset is yet to be determined.
It's too intentionally set up to be just an asset reuse. He was the only other person there and the car stopped right beside him.
Ethan is the figure walking towards the 4X4 at the end. If you break the camera during the cutscene it's clearly him.
I was thinking the same thing that scene was dragged out for like 5 secs as if they were trying to subtly tell us something
How would Ethan still be alive? Why would he be there?
@@EdoloChannel Sporulation perhaps.
This. I wanted to make sure no one brought this up before I mentioned it. I’m guessing they’re setting up the story for either DLC or Resi 9. Although it’s also possible they were just using his model but didn’t mean to literally have it be him story-wise. Which would be strange but not impossible.
@@Aarkwrite I'm guessing 7/8/9 is going to be Ethan's trilogy, then hopefully we can go back to "proper" Resident Evil Third Person games again after that.
Unfortunately, something tells me that because of the success of these First Person games they're going to continue it being that way.
Not gonna lie, I lowkey want a Resident evil in the future where leon or Chris is reviving Ethan or something.
Actually, Ethan is not dead, the one who walking in the after credit is Ethan Winters
@@BlackDeathGamer0311 really? didn't really pad attention at that part.

Keep in mind, in RE7 it is stated that Evelyn ages rapidly. In 3 years time she went from a little girl to an old woman, only portraying herself as a little girl in hallucinations. Now I don’t know if this applies here, but seeing Rose grown up made me think it’s only been a few months to a year since the events of Village.
The fact bodyguard jokingly consider rose as evelyn
No, eveline was engineered to do that with medicine administrated to stop the aging she stopped getting the med hince the failsafe for her to age to death was able to work..
Rose isnt engineered she was born with powers
What disappointed me about Village is how we never got to see Ethan's actual face. If you're going to kill him off permanently, it'd be nice to have known what he actually looked like.
You know I was just thinking that it makes sense to show his face at the end, in an epic way, but I don’t mind it. It’s a bit different than what I expected, but it makes me forget the game less. L
@@punished7030 They will show his face in 9. Although we can see it in the entries, but a proper face reveal will be done in 9.
Same. It should have showed his face in the scene after killing Miranda and had his closure scene with Chris.
He actually does have a face its never revealed in game but yeah he does
Look his face up on google. It's out there fully 3D rendered.
6:20 "Cadou" in romanian means "Gift" which reminds me of The Baker House incident.
In what ways. I also thought it meant gift because in French it's spelled "cadeau" and also means gift. But how does that relate to the bakers?
@@cartergirl3of3 if you remember in 7 (it’s been four years so I don’t blame you) the Bakers are constantly talking about “accepting her gift” when it comes to Eveline and the mold.
@@christiansava5280 Yes, exactly.
Yeah but thats probably because rose is an eveline, shes a bioweapon too
Beautiful video
So we got Weskers son, Dr. Birkins daughter, and now Mr. Winters daughter! Who else sees the irony in all this!
And I bet Rose will be a protagonist in RE9
@@jenn5628 I am thinking the same.
@@jackscalibur I wouldn't mind it to be honest
Irony? There's absolutely no irony in any of what you said.
@@terran236 obviously you never played all the th Resident Evil games! The irony is that super powered engineered people will safe the day! Lol Read in between the lines! Something shouldn't have to be said! COMMON SENSE!!
maybe i’m thinking into this too much, but it’s interesting they said “The father’s story is now done” and not just using Ethan’s name. i’m sure they were referring to ethan but also maybe they tried to make everyone think they were and there’s more to Ethan’s story!
Calling it, if Rose is the protagonist or at least plays a big role in RE9, then Ethan will probably appear in a way similar to Eveline
Could be that we'll play Mia in the next title along with Rose
@@EyeBeZombie mia is one of the reasons for all of this and Chris hates and despise ppl like her...still Surprise me how he give her a pass...

6:21 "Cadou" is actually Romanian for "Gift". Gives the whole parasite thing a new meaning, and it sure does not feel like a random name coincidence.
This is a great video.
Resident Evil 9 Teaser Trailer, last frame of the video
Ethan: Here we are...
Genuinely shocked that the BSAA have essentially swapped places with Umbrella and Neo-Umbrella. Also shocked that the future of the numbered titles are looking to be decades past the events of this.. I wonder what the original cast are gonna look like at whatever age they'll be.. Definitely got me interested in the future of Resident Evil. Also, is this writing lifted from another article? I have heard a lot of this word for word from a separate place?
Yeah. BSAA got infiltrated by the Bioweapon Industry. We can look forward to nicer more clandestine labs now if they're mainstream again. Instead if cave labs and villages.
Theres a theory the future of RE isnt that 'future', Rose got accelerated aging based on the evidence on the game
All in all its like hitting Umbrella became one head of a hydra. The players not yet stopped simply packed up their labs and waited for other institutions to co opt, continue with biz as usual.
@@sendalnya she doesn't rapidly age, its confirmed 17 years had passed
@@mappy-5934 wait really? Any source on this?

Sherry’s healing factor means she basically can’t age. And Rosemarie has an unknown power. Pretty soon we might see these two girls in their own game.
Wait we think the rose scene was in the future but remember eveline Rapidly grew without medication maybe rose did too?
Rose is more stable than Eveline, and it had been confirmed that 17 years passed

I really hope they go this route. A normal aging rose would mean other main RE characters would be old by the time of the next game

"There are still many unanswered questions."
First time playing a Resident Evil game? Welcome to the club, kid. 😎
Final Fantasy and Resident Evil; love em to death, but they confuse me like hell.
Great video.
DLC that we need:
- Ada wong saving ethan before the blast
-Chris going RAMBO at BSAA HQ to later finding out that all became zombies...
The ada thing was gonna happen but they said it causes issues in the story so they didn't
I'm now really interested in a follow up or seeing Leon again. Wonder what he is doing.
I just want Ethan back
I was wondering why Mia never really reacted to getting the first shot to the chest. Now it all makes sense.
This is a very good video.
the BIG question is: Why did they choose to keep Ethan’s face a secret? I thought they would finally do a face reveal before he killed himself but they didn’t smh
Becase ethan is a survivor from silent hill 4. The character is almost identical.
Yeah i was waiting for him to turn around and look at the camera or for it to zoom on his face but never did that annoyed me like he's going to fucking die anyways show us his face!
To allow players to easier identify themselves in the character they are playing. Nothing really special, just game design

Maybe they are saving it for RE9

So Ethan probably isn't even fully dead?
Chadthan lives on
Wait, what?
Ethan is alive in the 2030s?
@@kodymcbride6901 We already know that the mold holds the consciousness of anyone connected to it so it stands to reason that Rose is able to communicate/feel Ethan with her after his death.
@@beansfebreeze maybe that's why she said " I know".
14:10 there is more mold out there. During the chris part of the game one of his team mention that MOST mold colonies arent as big as the one in the village. So there could be more mega sized ones hidden. And if they all share data like monster wifi then ethan is definitely still out there. Most likely stuck or dormant until he regains strength.
Incase it hasn't been said: the person walking towards the camera in final scene is Ethan- literally. It's also the only time Ethan is seen with his head intact.
It could just be a resued asset but I doubt it, I bet it has more to do with the data stored in the mold.
