I think there is a fair argument for both Messi and Lewandowski to win the award and really if the award went to either player, it wouldn't have been a crime because I don't think one was supremely better than the other this year.
What I don't get is why some of the pundits here think Jorginho had a better year than Messi. Sure he won the most prestigious trophies but Shaka's right: Jorginho was a good player in two excellent teams, but not the best player in either team. Don fluffing at Shaka when he said "Kante carried Jorginho in UCL and Donarumma/Chiesa were better in Euros" is just a stupid way to react. Kante literally won the MOTM in I think quarters, semis, and final (could be wrong but he did win a few in the knockout stages of champions league). Meanwhile Donarumma was the Man of the Tournament at the Euros. Jorginho just happened to be a good player caught up in the hype after his teams won two big trophies. You need only look at the recent mistake he made against United to realize he's nowhere close to Messi's level, not now and not ever.

Kante was the standout player for Chelsea and Chiesa, Donnarumma, Chiellini were the standouts for Italy. Jorghino barely scored any goals and the only ones he does score are penalties and he provides very few assists. The only one that could have an argument for winning the Ballon D'or is Lewandowski who has been sensational for many years.
I'm not sure why there is so much discontent with Messi winning it when he scored 41 goals, had 17 assists, won the Copa America, won the Copa Del Rey and was top scorer, top assister and tournament MVP at the Copa. Yet people still have the nerve to say what has he done! ridiculous.

I completely agree with Shaka's take on Jorginho, that he was exceptionally good with both club and country but still not as good as Donaruma and Chiesa in Italy, or Kante at Chelsea.
The debate about Lewandowski's nationality is a really interesting one, in my opinion. Messi plays for a country that is currently the second best in Conmebol with or without him, while Lewy's country is not even in the top 10 in Europe. I believe that if you argue, "Messi deserves the Ballon d'Or because he accomplished so much with his country." That's fine logic. But if you extend it to "Messi deserves the Ballon d'Or because he accomplished more with his country than Lewandowski," that's where you'd be a bit disingenuous to ignore the differences between Argentina's level, and Poland's.
I do think Messi is being taken for granted a bit. I also think Lewy deserved the Balon d'Or. Still I'm happy for Messi. I'm glad he will be remembered as one of the greatest football players ever.

I agree with your points. You can definitely use the same logic when comparing Barcelona and Bayern Munich. My issue is that Lewy and Poland massively underperformed in the Euros and their group was not that difficult. Remember we have to have context. During the group stage, Lewy was underwhelming vs Serbia, I believe, which was the first game. A game which was winnable for them. Then they faced Spain. Versus Spain, Busquests did not play and Spain were looking questionable until his return and they started flying. Sure he scored a goal but scoring a goal does not indicate you played a great game. Versus Sweden, which was his best game, he scored twice, however, he did miss a golden chance for a hat-trick, and in the end Sweden scores in the end to win the game 3-2. THe fact that they came LAST in their group for a tournament that is allowing BEST THIRD has to go against him. Again, I in no way expect Poland to make a Finals, but come on, at least get out the group. That alone in my eyes would have made his argument stronger.

But somehow, Messi won the Ballon d'Or. Nowdays, a Copa America wins you the prize. A Copa America held four times in six years seems to be more important than UCL, EUROs. Playing against Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Venezuela seems to be more difficult than playing against Bayern, Real, City, PSG, Atletico, Chelsea or against Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, etc.
The worst part was inventing a prize such as "Best striker of the year" as a consolation for Lewandovski, after scoring 111 goals and winning like 7-8 trophies in the last two years, including UCL, CWC, Uefa Super Cup, Bundesliga, etc. All that, just to give the Ballon d'Or to Mr. Bolivia. Similarly ppl arguing Lewa scored so many goals, well he plays for Bayern who bought the league 10 years ago, what did he do in the UCL, he scored like 6 goals, same as Messi. What did he do with Poland, nothing spectacular. So the moment you take Lewa out of this utterly dominating Bayern team, guess what he is just another good player.

Messi in Copa America scored 4 goals in 6 games vs Bolivia and Chile.

Luis Diaz was also top scorer with 4 goals in Copa America.
Lewandowski scored 69 goals in 55 games in 2021 while Messi scored 43 goals in 61 matches.
    Goals per game ratio:
    Lewandowski 1.25 ratio
    Messi 0.70 ratio
Lewandowski won Bundesliga with 41 goals in 29 matches (most ever).
Messi finished 3rd in La Liga with 30 goals in 35 matches and Oblak got player of the season ahead of Messi. Also Benzema and Suarez were better in La Liga that season.
Lewandowski made the UCL quarter finals by scoring the winner vs Lazio in both legs, then got injured so couldn’t play vs PSG as Bayern lost without him.

The underlying fault in these awards is the lack of a clear criteria leaving everyone with their own interpretation of what exactly they are voting on and for. If the award is for ‘The Best Player in The World’, then the list of winners should really only be a handful (in the last 30 yrs that would be maybe 4/5 players only: Zidane, Ronaldo, CR7, Messi). So the most commonly accepted definition has been ‘Who had the best year’. I don’t know how you argue Messi had a better year than Jorginho (if team achievement has weight) or Lewa (if it’s just about individual excellence)
