I would go even further to Shaka's point of view. South American football was much stronger than in Europe during Pele's era, and if you want proof you need only see how well south American sides (Brazilian in particular) have done against European opposition in the Intercontinental Cup, the forerunner to the modern-day Continental Cup (or world club Cup).
During Pele's era, in the first 10 years of the competition (1960 - 1970), European clubs won it 4 times with clubs from Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina winning it on 6 occasions. Pele won the trophy 3 times with Santos during this period, beating a very strong Benfica side that included the great Eusebio. And least we forget Argentina club side "Estudiantes de La Plata" beating Man Utd to take the title in 1968.

It is a myth to say that European clubs have always been stronger because the evidence does not support such. That only starts to become a real factor in the late '80s when South American players going overseas for the much bigger paycheques really begins to pick up momentum.
That Uruguay was the first team to win the World Cup (1930) speaks volumes. South America has always had the edge as far as the caliber of the footballing talent the respective continents produce. Pele, Maradona, and Messi, the 3 names most associated with being the GOATS, are all South American for this reason.

Shaka and myself were talking about the state of South American football during the Pele era when all the best south American players stayed and played their football in their home countries. For example, not one play from any of the Brazilian squads that won 3 world cups in 12 years (1958-70) had a signal player that played their club football outside of Brazil.

So haaland, benzema and mbappe had a better season than Messi even thought he outscored all of them in the league by a good margin with 30 league goals?
In my opinion Benzema had better season than Messi let me tell you why:
1. Individually, he's terrific
30 goals, 12 assists for club and country in 2021.
One of the Euro 2020 top scorers despite not having reached the quarterfinals.
The record-breaking start to the new season: 8 goals, 7 assists.
2. His goals are crucial
Since January 2021, Benzema has scored 8 game-winning goals across all competitions; roughly speaking, that's 24 points.
In the 2020/21 season, Karim was among Europe's best players in this stat.
3. He's incredibly consistent
Since the beginning of 2021, Benzema has recorded at least one goal contribution in 17 of all the games he played.
Karim could go without goals or assists for 2 games in a row but this happened only twice this year. There were no bigger 'breaks' without him scoring or assisting.
4. His career speaks for itself
If point 3 ('overall evaluation of the player's career') is important indeed, then we may say Benzema's career is worth being rewarded with at least one Ballon d'Or.
The 33-year-old has won 28 trophies at a senior level, including 4 Champions League cups, and his epic France comeback is the icing on the cake.

From these stats, Messi was clearly the better finisher. Everyone is only looking at face value which is the number of goals, so Lewandowski seems superior, but this is only because he has been given the ability to get into goalscoring positions more frequently than Messi. Furthermore, Messi was more decisive in terms of winning matches for his team. Many of Lewandowski's goals have come in games where the match wasn't competitive because he plays for a team that a majority of the time, is far more dominant than the opposition.
I believe Messi is fully deserving of this award.

The question is the GREATEST player. That means the trophies you win, the goals you’ve scored, and the great moments you’ve created. I believe Messi is the greatest of all time, but it’s still up for debate. In terms of TALENT though, it’s not even debatable. Messi is the most talented player ever.
