    Malkovich accent is the stuff of legend, Here's what Matt Damon said about it.......During a chat with BBC Radio One, Damon said that - during their very first take - Malkovich put on a crazy, high-pitched accent for no apparent reason. Across the table, Damon was left befuddled, staring at Malkovich, wondering what the hell was going on. But his co-star continued, and even received a round of applause from the surrounding crew for his performance.
    Amusingly, Malkovich then leaned in close and whispered "I'm a terrible actor", which had Damon laughing.

    Hi Chrissie. Believe it or not Malkovich worked with a Russian woman as prep for this role. They gave her copies of the lines and after she would speak them John would imitate her until everyone agreed he had her "brand" of English down. There are a couple of other poker movies you might want to try. One is newer and is called Molly's Game. The other is an older film starring Steve McQueen, Karl Malden, Edward G. Robinson and Ann Margaret. It is called The Cincinnati Kid. Great movie and cast. Also for an interesting movie (if you haven't seen it) that includes a bit of poker and other gambling and also shows characters sort of skirting around the law, there is a movie classic starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Robert Shaw called The Sting. I personally think you will love The Sting. Hope you enjoy!!

    As someone who has played poker for more than 20 years, the problem Mike had was not leaving himself outs. It doesn't matter how good you are if you don't play within your bankroll you WILL go broke. I've seen many, many ppl run up a roll and then blow it on a bad run of cards. Love Rounders, the movie that has gotten so many ppl into the game!

      @@philmakris8507 "Bad odds, mostly luck". As someone who made a living playing (limit) hold 'em, that's simply untrue. Stud-based games give you more information, yes, but they also give _everyone_ at the table more information. More importantly, they are vastly less popular than texas hold 'em, which means your average opponent in a stud game is going to be far more experienced (and thus less likely to make the kind of mistakes you need them to make) vs. in a hold 'em game.
      I played a good amount of stud (and omaha, and most other variations of poker) for fun, but limit hold 'em payed the bills.

      Haha. My dad developed a poker addiction because of this movie. He has lost SO much money betting on poker. Betting money he couldn't afford to lose. He's currently in a bind because of the same poker addiction he developed over 20 years ago because of this movie. Poker is a lot of fun but you're absolutely right you must set yourself limits and DO NOT go against those limits. And don't chase the losses, that's the worst part people fall into. They lose and then chase it, lose and then chase even harder. Very slippery slope.

    Such an underrated gem. Not only the seminal poker movie, also a really interesting character study with an absolutely _insane_ cast.
    That big hand that Mike loses to Teddy KGB in the beginning is such an interesting scenario. From their own perspectives, both players had the second-best possible hand. Mike's A9 could only be beat by the pocket aces Teddy had, but without cheating (and it's never suggested that he does cheat) Teddy still has to consider the possibility that Mike has pocket nines for four of a kind, which would beat his aces full. The fact that Teddy so confidently makes his all-in bet in that hand shows that he is entirely dialed in and is reading Mike's actions so well that he _knows_ Mike doesn't have the quad nines, while Mike never even considers the possibility that Teddy holds the better full house.
    Then of course the complete juxtaposition in the final hand, where Teddy once again confidently goes all in with what he believes is the best hand, only for Mike to turn over the stone nuts (best possible hand regardless of other players' holdings). Malkovich gives an excellent performance there, even through the over the top accent, of showing his initial anger over losing the game (and, less importantly, the money), followed by his realization that he had been definitively outplayed by Mike, then capped off with the begrudging respect he gives Mike in admitting that he'd been beaten "fair and square".

My favorites that I watched for the first time last year were Bringing out the dead, Blood simple, The machinist, true romance, and The king of comedy. HIGHLY recommend checking those out if you haven’t seen them already. The color of money was my favorite gambling movie I’ve watched recently, gave that a 9/10.

    I watched this film in 1998. I was in medical school at the time. I read a bit about hold em and went to play at a casino. Few people even knew how Holdem was played at the time. The other players really were like the tourists depicted in this movie. I was a beginner myself, but at least I studied a little, knew to play a tight range, and knew to play aggressively. It was so easy to crush the games back then. It was also quite rare to see a no limit cash game in a casino. I think this was because the poker rooms knew that good players would destroy all the beginners too quickly, leaving the casino unable to make money off the rake. Anyway. it was a really fun time and I made more money than a student could make doing any sort of real job.

    I follow a lot of channels and I have seen it reviewed only 3 times. One was just a 15 minute review. Asia and BJ did it just a week and a half ago. And now you. 👏👏👏. Two other movies you would enjoy are the absolute juggernaut CASINO and the great pool hustling movie POOLHALL JUNKIES.

    Poker isn’t simple gambling addiction. Sure some are degenerate gamblers … however, as Matt Damon says: it’s a skill game. Don’t forget, you can win the game with the worst hand… and a single hand, whilst at times dramatic, isn’t the game. It’s like soccer, a lot dribbling a ball, passing back and forth, both jabbing and parrying. Very much a game of mental chess and playing probabilities of maths.
    It’s very much a fine art 😊

    One of my favorite all time movies. It is obvious to look at worm (eddie N) in a negative light, especially when Mike (Matt D) is our hero. The line worm says outside the state police game is spot on. How come Mike's moves are so high and noble? Mike does several irresponsible things in this moving not inspired by worm. Playing with all his money at the start. Then at the end pressing it when he could just walk away with his debt paid off. Halfway to paying the judge back. If he is so good, walk away and go play in those games you know you can beat. He falls into the same trap as the beginning without the character growth through the movie. This time, he just wins instead of loses. If we are being results oriented, yeah he did great. If he loses that second round with KGB he is broke, owes the judge 10k and who knows what happens with Grama. Worm is definitely a questionable character, but I started coming around on worm. He knows who he is and is unapologetic for it. So from Worm's point of view, this guy who used to run games with him, including cheat with him, went and lost it all. Now he is telling me everything I do is wrong and everything he does is right.

    • @chrissiereacts
      @chrissiereacts  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Oh for sure and I agree with your take on Mike. That's the main reason I was saying "Walk away" towards the end. I mentioned this in another comment but I think the perception comes from the _degrees_ of risk.
      We can argue that Worm is worse because his actions put Mike in direct danger (ex: carrying his debt, getting his ass kicked) whereas Mike puts his relationships at risk (ex: betraying Jo's trust, risking the profs money). Mike's actions will be emotionally painful but Worm's actions could actually get you killed.
      Also, Mike's character is proven to be better as he tries to face his problems vs Worm who hides and runs away from them. As with his tuition, he would have worked hard to repay the prof even if he lost at the end. Meanwhile, some say Worm is still running lol

    This movie has the most realistic hands put on screen. The first hand of the movie is very realistic and there is nothing Mike could have done. He had the second best hand possible and could only lose to the higher full few people if any could have let that down unless they know their opponent for a long time and have a strong read but even then it is extremely unlikely. The last hand is my favorite it is nothing crazy and it fact it is one of the most common things in poker. Anyone who has played poker at least occasionally has found himself on both sides of that hand.

    There are lots of cliches about poker and many are contradictory, but oddly enough, still true. Like Mike saying it's not gambling because the same players are at the world series every year (hasn't been true since this movie was made) but his point about people like Kinish grinding out a living is true. But one thing about poker I learned, you can play badly enough to ensure that you lose, but you can't play great enough to ensure that you win. There is always luck involved in single hands.

      Poker is never about the one single outcome situation. It is playing that same spot hundreds of times where 40% of the time you lose, 60% of the time you win, which means 20% profit in the long run… that’s the marathon.Thats why the pros don’t go on tilt when it is that 40% of the times when they lose, they know that in the long run, the 60% of the time will generate the profit.

    Hi Chrissie, not a lot of people react to this film as it’s somewhat a cult classic so was glad to see that you enjoyed it. People have been begging for a sequel for years and it’s been talked about but never come to fruition. Regarding Malkovich and the “accent”, here’s a really funny clip from an interview with Matt Damon telling a story about that. czcams.com/video/KMaAT_KPSs4/video.htmlsi=HuPGexV2JKAlhimz

    I like to pose this question to women. Do you think Mike's girlfriend is trying to help him or toxically control him.

    • @chrissiereacts
      @chrissiereacts  Před 4 měsíci +3

      I don't think she was trying to save him or control him.
      I think more than anything she's trying to save herself from going down the same road from the previous year. I imagine it was a hard time for both of them to get through and she stood by him, but is firm in her convictions that she's not signing up for a lifetime of having to worry about him losing everything again. She's basically saying, these are my boundaries; if you respect them we have a future, if not I need to protect myself and walk away.
      When Worm and Mike have their final scene together and he asks him, 'are you coming with me?' and Mike says 'Not this time.' essentially mirroring her sentiments towards him. Worm was too high risk for Mike in the same way Mike was too high risk for Jo.

  • @jbauer140
    @jbauer140 Před 4 měsíci +1

    uhhhhh 200 bucks that he gave worm was nothing, for the fact that he didn't rat out mike when they were running those scams that got Worm put in jail, so basically by him not saying anything about mike being his partner in the scams worm went to jail while mike was free and going to school!!!!!! so yeah you can't look at worm as disingenuous when mike only gave him 200 bucks!!!!! Mike owes him big time for not ratting him out

      @@chrissiereacts 4 wheels... 4 wheel drives infact. I'm a former police officer and currently I work as a vehicle accident investigator and do accident reconstruction. Two-wheel vehicles don't survive accidents very well. I was reading some of the other comments and I probably should have commented on that one but if you're looking for a good baseball movie and you haven't seen it yet Field of dreams is awesome. More of a feel-good story with a baseball theme.

There's lots of factors but regardless of what you drive it's better to be bigger than what hits you. My job makes me aware of how important it is to tell the people that you love everyday what they mean to you. Nobody thinks they're getting in the car to run to the grocery store and never come back. It happens everyday.

    Jo was trying to be controlling. Mike was a complete degerate gambler he actually has skill. Why is it that if a man tells his wife or girlfriend not to do something, it's controlling, but if a girl tells her man to stop doing something, she's only trying to help him?
