  • WOW wow wow! I did not expect to love this as much as I did. Such a riveting movie! The camera work, the pacing, the lighting, the acting, the energy!!
Excited to discover more Oliver Stone movies now 😃
I wish I could have included more of the take down scenes towards the end but the copyright claims were a nightmare on this one! Chop chop, blur, mute, rinse, repeat. Countless re-edits and re-uploads. In the famous words of James Acaster, "Bon Apetit".

I was an usher at 16 when Wall street was released. I realized that with every showing, the audience was mostly rooting for Michael Douglas/ Gordon Gekko. You know you have fantastic writing with a great actor when the audience is pulling for the villain.

I just turned 51 and have loved this movie since the 90s.
    It's a 100% morality play.
    All about selling-out.
The greatest moment I decided was at the end when Bud enters his office (for the last time) with that 'On top of the world' vibe, he actually passed a bicycle messenger on his way out.
All I can imagine is the 'Yuppie' went to jail after leaving in tears while the 'Blue-collar stiff' walked out and went right back to work!
    Poetry.

Just a few facts, black Monday was in 1987 (so a couple of years after this is based) Gordon Gekko is partly based on Ivan Borsky (who was found guilty of insider trading but paid a big fine to avoid jail). When Bud was in Gekkos office he overheard them talking about buying more Teldar paper. If Gekko is buying more to potentially take over the company the price would go back. Therefore if Bud buys that security before Gekko announces the takeover he has committed crime of insider dealing because he is going to make money. My favourite film and this has a huge impact on my childhood. I wanted to be Bud Fox and even became a stockbroker after university.

Fun Fact: there are two main elder figures at Bud Fox's firm.
The Boss with the cane and the Sage with words of wisdom about looking into the Abyss.
James Karen (the Boss) appeared in 1985s 'Return of the Living Dead'. Hal Holbrooke (the Sage) appeared in 1982s 'Creepshow'.
Oh, and speaking of horror films, Michael Douglas famously helped countless husbands remain faithful after watching his many poor choices during 'Fatal Attraction'.

The way they brought down the background lighting in the club locker room around Gecko, when he pitches Bud; and again when they focus on that reptilian smile in the car when Bud acquiesces to Gecko's request--this is great visual storytelling, and it's probably the most impressive in Stone's career. I think he drank the Kool-Aid and bought into the hype of his own media-generated genius, because I thought that Platoon was basically fine but not very good or great (the storytelling was quite overraught) and Natural Born Killers was a straight-up mess but with interesting editing, he really doesn't have any big or signature films beyond these. Then he just sort of stumbled around and made a pretty bad movie about the JFK assassination (that had a great cast) and from there it was just him wandering into the dark prairies of the forgotten and lost.
It also kind of mirrors Charlie Sheen's "career" as an actor. This was his pinnacle. He was fine in Platoon and OK in Major League which is just a joley sports film, and then he got into the the Tiger Blood nonsense and hasn't been heard of in 10+ years. Funny how a film about the highs and lows of Wall Street traders can reflect the highs and lows of semi-decent actors and directors work in tandem so well.

Inside information is any kind of information about a public company, usually plans for their finances, which usually often connect to how their stock price is doing that has not been made public. In the stock market world, you can only transact and trade stock on companies that have made such information public. Because if it’s not, it can be seen as an unfair advantage, and henceforth why it’s illegal. And yes, you can very well not only lose your license for it, but you can also go to jail for it.

    • @modrenwarefare
      @modrenwarefare Před 7 měsíci

@@chrissiereacts Nowadays its somewhat more rare but it still happens frequently. The reason I say somewhat rare is the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). Aka the stock market police. Have made it more challenging through such things as being able to randomly check up on you, if they see that you’re trading at a high value on a single stock. if they see this, they usually will call you and ask for the proof that you were doing this legally. If you’re doing it the right way it should not be hard for you to provide the proper evidence to prove you’re doing it in vain. If you’re able to do so, then they’ll leave you alone usually. However, this practice was much more common in the 1980s. As in that era everyone wanted to become big on Wall Street and were willing to use any means to do so, even being Bud Fox if needed to be. In the 80’s. But yes it does happen frequently but checks and balances are in place now and it’s harder to slip through the grip of it.

A teacher made us watch this movie at 14 and I absolutely hated it, 15 years later and I watched it again many many times in a row, as an adult I was able to fully appreciate it. Superb acting and, as you noticed, the pacing is very good. I had to rewatch it many times to fully understand the plot, but you got many of the little details on first view, amazing! The ending with Gecko losing a good amount of money versus his adversary was very rewarding, but this isn't a fairy tale, we soon realize that the one who will be paying the bigger price will be Bud Fox.
