Aero Amateur Races A Tour De France Pro Cyclist | TT Bike VS Road Bike
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 19. 12. 2020
- We've all heard it said that 'aero is everything' when it comes to cycling, but how much difference does it really work? To answer this question we've created a wholly unscientific experiment - pitting an 'aero' amateur against a Tour de France pro, to see just how much difference all the gear makes, and just how good the world's top riders are.

Can i get any cycle like this one
What is FTP? Thanks a lot!
You guys are pros yourself đ
Taa Ollie and Conor, that was fun to watch! It was a hard call, I thought Ollie had it in the end, but Ollie's slightly fumbled clipping in, a "Matt Moment" as I call it, and slightly off-centre helmet and visor, might have cost Ollie a few precious seconds.
@@yengsabio5315 Functional Threshold Power - the amount of power a cyclist can output constantly over a fairly extended period of time (usually 1 hour, though it's normally tested over a 20 minute max effort session), sometimes divided by their weight.
"Can an amateur on aero bike beat a pro?"
YES!
"This amateur is Ollie"
Oh...
Don't worry, he still rides like an amateur đ
đđđđ
This roast just got dark
Is this the bike equivalent to moving to another city means you get to start over as a virgin.
and the so call amateur ftp is 4.5watt/kg
They had to get ollie to do it because as we know simon richardson is faster than everything in existence.
Here's hoping we'll get Si Richardson Vs an X-15 fighter jet sometime soon
Also Simon is not an amateur.
@@MattH6565 well thatâs not really going to happen is it...
Youâd never convince Si to carry a rucksack full of bricks to make it a fair challenge.
Haha! For real
@@TreMell84 yeah, whatizhee exactly?
"normal road bike"
I mean its not out of the ordinary
It is more AERO then TT bike
With a light mounted on the front
@@somethingreal5042 pretty noob bike actually
Normal road bike...pretty sure at least in the city where I live in the U.S., the avg cost of a road bike probably $300
Ollie's such a good presenter it's got to the point at which I'd watch him present a 7 hour video about bottom bracket standards
He would happily make that video too if we let him đ
đđ€Šââïž
I think Hambini already has that market cornered. đ
@@gcn please, next april fools do it!
He was that good before he was on GCN too!
âWhich is why Iâm packing...â
*cuts to shot where Ollieâs groin is in the centre of the frame*
Also I like how Ollieâs accent clearly gets more Yorkshire when he goes home
Ollie's Doncaster roots coming out in his accent in this one
Haha after the race he goes full Donny! Brilliant.
I noticed that too!
Revertigo
His presenter voice left the building đđđ
After a pint or a TT race.
To be fair, a 22 minute ride on a course like that would likely put you in contention for a lot of club TTs in the summer, let alone when it's cold and damp so that's still a great effort from Ollie! It just shows how much better Connor is than most mere mortals!
To hold off a pro for over 20 minutes is pretty darn amazing
People underestimate the athleticism of professional athletes because they make it look easy
No, they don't. People know the athleticism of professional athletes -- they underestimate the genetics and mental fortitude of professional athletes (with the latter being somewhat tied to genetics as it's heavily based on one's personality traits).
The alignment of Connor's glasses and Ollie's visor disturbs me :(((
agreed, i saw that and became nauseated.
I think i missed it on the video. Can you give me the timestamp?
@@Dwight0530 0:37 +
I genuinely think Si could have side career as a comedy actor. That phone conversation was brilliant!
Meh.
Watched this video and then went for a quick easy spin around the Fuego Flats. Mr. C.Swift happened to blow by me. He must have been doing intervals because I passed him some time later. The next time he came up on me I gave it the beans but he still left me in the dust. I guess 8.2 W/Kg for a few seconds isnât cutting it. I did manage to get a good picture though. Thanks Connor. đđđŒ
We should get a swear-jar for Ollie... everytime he says "aero" $ :D
He couldn't afford that...
@@gcn LOL đ
"All The Kit -- Still S***" ... think that's going to become my personal motto! Thanks! Good vid'.
Ollie on the finish : gasping for air
Swift on the finish : still going full speed
Time to suit up Simon!
One of them gets to travel the world riding his bike in exotic locations.....and the other has to help Nairo.
To be fair - Ollie makes the most of the power he's got. That is a fast time for the power output on a cold day with heavy air and a 180.
Every time ollie talks about himself I get worried, I'm also 185cm tall, 70kg, 312W FTP and have a masters degree in chemistry, the only difference it's that i'm not blonde
Ollie has a PhD
The only video i keep coming back to, the content, the executionâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
Best GCN video. Such a fun time!
great to see you having so much fun - well done.
The problem was the suit, it was still heavy with Siâs sweat
Si doesn't need to sweat to beat 3 roadies...
@@gcn Hah! What a reply! Love it.
Did he just secretly leak a video? 4 against 1? Hopefully that happens.
not that secretly, it was mentionen in the GCN show already. Actually was the planned vid for today ;)
But I do hope the 4 vs 1 is coming
It would be a shame if 1 person beats 4, wouldn't itđ

Glad you enjoyed it Antchao!
These comparisons are really nice to see, keep going on the good work, it is an amazing content!
I don't know about the rest but that line about the biceps area being flappy, the vid deserves a LIKE
This is great content!!!! Bravo GCN!
More of these races!
âI mean, itâs an absolute weapon! It looks like itâs been beamed down from planet Aero!â - the best line from Ollie ever
Just learned today that Ollie is actually a Dr. of chemistry- Dr. Bridgewood!
Wow!!! the conditions you guys do these challenges in is incredible. Cold and wet and slippery
Does Ollie get more Northern when he speaks to another Northerner đ
Bloody rite lad, e does!
We're considering adding subtitles.
All northerners do!
I live in the states, and when visiting my parents in Lancashire, no one in the states understands a word I say.
22.06 and 21.28 minutes over 10 miles is a difference of 1 mph, a very good effort by Ollie đ€
"Think I'll stop for a coffee first ..."
Ahh, he knows how the game is played.
More of these two please. Magic
I reckon that's a fantastic effort by Ollie and would class that as a victory with all respects to Swifty. I thought a pro would have got him before the turn. Great presenting as usual and a fab show.
It was the beard, only if Olli had shaved
He's even not out of breath goddamn
Wonderful video! Highly inspirational for us mere mortals when we may have a chance to hold off a pro rider with extreme equipment.
This is soooo funny, great job GCN.
"My next cycling opponent will be Maximillian Speed, I think I can hold him off"
Brilliant, more than a respectable time Ollie, cracking time on a road bike for Connor, just goes to highlight the gulf between different levels in amateurs and that pros are in a different league.
That was a great effort Ollie! Very entertaining.
I would love to see a comparison between a vintage/classic beam bike (perhaps a Trek Y-Foil) and a modern era TT bike. Get the lab coats and ready the wind tunnel!
It is wonderful having a challenge with a current pro. Well done!
Good to see a video happening in Yorkshire.
Brilliant, as I watch this aboard my TT bike on the Turbo đ
Conor seems like a sound lad, enjoyed him on the video! Cheers GCN!
22:06 for a 10mile TT on greasy roads? Yeah, I'll take that thanks.
in early 1970s i rode a lot of tt, especially 10 miles. a good time was 24 minutes 30 seconds on a flat road (wide open, no traffic). bikes weighed 21 pounds. aero was the name of a chocolate bar then. great video thanks.
"...beamed down from planet Aero" Thanks for a vid that really did make me laugh.
2:50 there is a 4 vs 1 video coming? Nice :)
As soon as I see Arkea Samsic I was excited. Great to see Connor Swift
This course is grim. A short 22 on a wet winter Friday is good going.
your music upgraded so much, keep it up
2.30 "that's why I'm packing and I have brought toys to the party" meanwhile it's a perfect shot of Ollie's personal pipe
Love the videos when they all just piss about :)
Nice to see that well done Ollie and Connor
"amateur" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here
Is Ollie paid by a cycling team to train?
Ollie is very much an amateur.
@@MrBJPitt didn't say he wasn't, he's just not representative of like 98% of amateurs
@@Rover200Power he's paid by GCN to
@@lexistential he is paid to make videos about cycling. I doubt his pay is related to power output and race performance.
Merry Christmas đ
Great efforts đȘ
Is it me or was Ollie ten percent more northern for this one?
12.5
Go Ollie!!! Great test, really clarifies the real world for us. Pros are pros for a reason. Great show!
What, Ollie couldn't knock up his own disc-wheel? Top bloke, Connor!
I want to see a challenge where all the presenters use their own regular bike. You can handicap the start times based on who is best. Like a 10km race.
Sympas se petit dĂ©fiđ
Again, requesting Recumbent vs. Aero
I can't agree with you more.
Really, we should be seeing the lineup of the British Human Powered Vehicle club out here with these guys on this TT course.
T.T vs RECUMBENT BIKE
âYouâve had COVIDâ đđđđ
Did Si vs 4 video came out?
Simon would beat R Dennis, lets have it! :) But really, great video, love all your stuff GCN
You should put the pro on a 14 speed steel bike wth downtube shifters, and the amateur on pro kit.
Yes definitely
That is the video I have been waiting to see. Amateur on the fanciest S-Works or something similar, and the pro on something used that they bought for $300. Let Jon do a maintenance episode on the bike first, to make sure it is in proper working order.
Downtube shifters test on a flat course??? What's the point. I've got about 15,000kms on a steel bike with downtube shifters, and a flat TT race is not something that would bother anyone, you'd change gears 4 times? And you'd have time to anticipate them.
Now a rolling course with a pack of hungry riders putting in constant attacks? Now you're talking, I hated the constant need to change gears over and over.
As for steel vs carbon - again on the flat the weight difference is minimal, and the even power applied is also not going to bother you in regards to stiffness mostly. Aero? Yes it's less aero, but a pro rides so much more aero than amateur.
@@MrBJPitt
I never said on a TT course, no TT bikes involved. It would be a cool comparsion video, thatâs all.
And maybe, just maybe, give the GCN guy a shot at beating a pro, and an amateur an excuse to spend on new kit.
@@Putinhuylo3 a pro will beat Ollie on anything with 2 wheels. I really don't think you understand the power output difference between the two. For example, in this video the pro was riding well below his best 1 hour wattage, let alone his best for this distance. The bike would literally need to be broken for a pro to lose.
did he really say packing wearing those shorts
i'd love to see you change bikes and do it again
I would like to see Pro use ÂŁ 800 road bike vs amateur use ÂŁ7000 road bike đ
They canât do that, the bike companies donât pay all that ad money for them to make videos like that đ
Good ride guys đđ
3:15 I always appreciate GCN's little funny segments LMAO
GCN goes Yorkshire, love it!
This is pure goldđ
top effort Ollie, well done :)
Just a suggestion for the next Si vs n race. How about Si vs 3 on Zwift.
These style Videos are so fun! Oscar the crouch (aero crouch) was able to prove that aero is king.
has the orbea been "down" the road!!, it has some scratches on the chain stay it didn't have in the start of the video. or am i seeing things ;)
I'd love to see a comparison between winter riding speed vs summer riding speed. At least as far as I am concerned, rides are up to 2-3 km/h slower in winter than in summer. That may be due to several reasons:
- less aero clothes
- air and rolling resistance
- more weight (again clothes, but also cookies...)
- maybe somewhat worse shape
- more cautious riding style on wet and slippery roads (true for me at least)
- more windy conditions, which tends to hurt average speed on roundtrips
- fitting wider tires, possibly mudguards
- ...?
It could be fun to compare some of these, say, ride in short aero clothes in winter (or vice versa, of course ;-))
What lovely weather to cycle ...
Ahh I see, you left Si out of the race to save yourselves from his snarky comments (for at least a week after the race) đ

Anyone know what Wahoo mount and light combo is being used on the front of that canyon?
Swifty is a beast though Ollie! Not surprised he put 30 secs into you, but fair play, you did do a cracking job and presenting as you went! Thatâs got to be 15 secs disadvantage right there!đ€Ł
Hello.. any suggestions in this question : Scott addict 30 tiagra group or Cube Attain GTC SL ultegra group or Orbea Avant H30d 105 group.....almost same price.....đ€đ€đ€

What brand are the lights on the Canyon?
Wherei s Si when you Need him ?

Can you do normal carbon roadbike with 210-220 watts vs expensive aero road bike with 200 watts.. so it can give an idea for newbie weather to spend money or train more..
Ollie is such a good sport to do this, racing against a pro rider... cause thereâs no way Iâm racing Usain Bolt... not even if he spots me 20 yards... đđđœ
