I can only imagine what those motorists where saying during the last test! đ
Come Mark, hang in there. The Boardman is now a good representation of a beginner taking on their first triathlon. Next episode could reflect that most triathletes in this budget area would then dial the position further (episode - advice and test), spend money upgrading the wheels (episode), add nutrition storage (episode), etc. Keep this series going!
Very good idea! Not sure if the wheel upgrade would be a priority though. Much as people like to buy new wheels, they provide one of the most expensive watt savings.
@@kajet666 a good pair of aluminum wheels will really make the ride quality feel better, aero wheel covers that you can put on your rear wheel are around $150 compared to spending like $900 for a real disc wheel, but still, there are other areas to upgrade first đ
@@ManyThingsYT yep, I actually do have (and race with) a âpoor manâs discâ i.e. Aerojacket :)
6 mins over an Ironman! For Christâs sake I lose that having a tea in transition!! Boardman it is then đ
Yeah. What in Muhammadâs turbin are they thinking!
Given that rider position matters much more than the bike itself, I think it is very important to optimize rider position on both bikes before testing. And if the answer is "the cockpit is garbage and I cannot adjust it how I want", then so be it. But it's unfair and therefore not very interesting to be dialed in on one and botching the fit on the other
Totally agree but at the same time, the less familiar position on the Boardman could hypotheticallly be faster at the same time. Also, the fastest position on one bike may not be the fastest on the other due to body interaction with the bikes
The important machine is the one on top of the bike. Buying new toys is cool and all, butâŠ
Great video guys. But you should also do it at a lower power, to be more representative of a typical AG triathlete on a long course tri. Maybe 200w-220w. It would be intertesting to see the diference.
Honestly 220w is still really high for long distances. I'm not an athlete but 220w is definitely way higher than what I put out on a long bike ride.
@@Tibovl given that my ftp is around 150, me too :)
@@deanb61 same :-)
I just did a long ride 86 miles at 197 watts. That's possible. I could have done that for over 100 miles
That is one neat take to having a new TT bike build.
I think the key thing to remember here, is that many of the upgrades you made weren't to the "aero" of the bike, just a wheel cover. The upgrades to gears, cockpit and brakes are more for safety and comfort. Over a longer race, you might see better times from improved drivetrain efficiency and braking on hilly courses. But given that 80% of the drag is the rider, i wonder why when replacing the cockpit you didn't opt for something that allowed you to go narrower at the front end and then tilt the bars up. I bet with the GP5000 tyres though it certainly felt nicer to ride too.
That looked like a fun video to make. And I agree the Boardman does really look better.
James is so funny with his dry wit đ Great combo with Mark... Next video... get some proper aero wheels on the bike
I wonder what cars think of you lot while filming? You ever had any problems with traffic?
I've always been against the aerobar shifters: the problem is well illustratedin this video. If you're shifting, it's because things are increasing in technical difficulty, and if that's the case you're rarely on the aeros: if it's not technical and you need to shift, it's not a problem to reach across from the aeros and shift a gear. Visa versa is FAR more difficult.
Yeah, you really need to shift before you run into trouble, i.e. shift down 2 gears before making a turn. Look at when it gets steeper and shift 50-20m before that point (I never get out of the saddle anyway), just keep that 88-92 cadence going.
I think it was the shoes. The white shoes on the Boardman are definitely slower than the black shoes on the Canyon ...
Great video, enjoyed it as I did a build-up myself a while ago. Those Di2 shifters on the Canyon is really cool, but I can just imagine that it will be an expensive upgrade on the Boardman!
Is it even an upgrade?
15:38 minute rolling Canyon sales ad. đ
YEP
I'm still riding my felt s22 from 2009 that I have a disc wheel cover and 42mm giant slr1 from my road bike. It's gotten me a 20:47 in a 10 mile tt on 330w. I don't time trial (once or twice a year) enough to get consistent results though.
Love this video !! Go Go Go Mr. Green Boardman !! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
LOL brilliant banter there! Actually the 8 seconds is more than 3%, it is a big difference. About 2 minutes over an Olympic distance race if you ride it at 300 watts or thereabouts.
Great video đ
I liked that. A few reasons whe you're a little less aero: different helmet? Shorts vs longer legs? Aerobars flat vs slightly angled up?
Lol⊠âyou didnât improve the performance đ€Łâ. Awesome vid. Answered my questions about upgrading a basic bike. Not really worth it. N Mark!! What happened to your beeping sound to start the tests! Not sure a countdown is anywhere near as good as your beeping start đ.
James is great on camera, normally takes new presenters a while to warm up but he seems right at home.
Heâs absolutely smashing it
@@markthrelfall3577 Heâs fine when outside but in the studio he hardly looks at the camera and just reads from his laptop whilst constantly scrolling with his hand giving very little interaction with the viewers.
I just bought my own budget tt bike to use in my next tri. Hoping the more aggressive position helps out.
For performance I'd try some alloy aero wheels on the basis that's the kind of real world upgrade that people who buy a bike like this would make. e.g. I bought an old Giant TCR TT bike (it has the same profile design cockpit). I replaced the old 10 spd dura ace with modern 11 spd Ultegra (+ the same dura ace shifters that you used) and replaced the cheap training wheels with Kinetic KS1 alloy aero wheels. I left the old dura ace breaks as they were fine. For a 60 year old never going to win anything triathlete it's a perfectly adequate bike for a total outlay of around ÂŁ1,000.
On the second roll down test on the Canyon, you pedalled a rotation at the start. This will affect it slightly.
We all have to start some were and budget so a very good show l start out many moons ago started out on a cheap bike to see if I enjoyed the sport I now have really nice carbon one now
Higher and closer arm position on the canyon could account for all of that time saved surely?
Let James upgrade a budget bike now:-)))
Total waste of time if body position is different.
How about having optimized tire pressure?
Can you imagine one second GTN making a video with as an end result that on an iroman course, there is a 1' difference between a cheapo alloy bike and a top notch Canyon....?
- aero position is narrower on the canyon
-concerning the aero advantage, the canyon has a deeper rim in front, so the aero lost at the rear is offset by the gain in front.
-I guess that bearings on the boardman haven't been cleaned and regreased...
-Tires are better on the Canyon
And.... they're telling me that putting a disc wheel on the rear doesn't improve a bike performance on a flat course....I don't believe it one second....every test I've done with a disc wheel, whatever the bike, improved the performance of the bike....or else they've installed the crappiest rustiest most defective disc wheel at the back of this Boardman bike.
Shouldn't the roll down test be from a standing start?
James in biggie big and Mark with a chimney, Sorry they are only a nice đ€Ł
Good lesson hahaha. Still would better tyres make more difference?
I popped GP5000 tyres on it, so itâs the same as the Canyon. Both bikes were much quicker this time due to weather and conditions. Unfortunately the gap was bigger between the two. Perhaps due to the higher travelling speeds?!
How bout you position the Boardman aero bars as narrow as the canyon's??? You are quite a bit wider on the Boardman.
The roll down test did have more peddling performed on the Canyon at the start though... đ€·đ€Ł
I bet you lost all your aero gains by messing.with the cockpit and in turn making your body less aero this time around mark.
You should race Ollies budget tt bike đ€Łđ€Ł
My gosh the new guy sounds like a robot reading a script Lol. Sounds super unnatural
Hopefully gets smoother over time
Unlike Fraser who doesnât even need his laptop!
Why not throw the road bike with aero bars into the competition? This is the exact conundrum I am in right now: 1998 Cervelo TT or 2019 Tarmac with clip on aero bars which will be faster over 40k?
Will depend on your position on the bike, I'm pretty sure. For example, the tarmac probably doesn't allow you a seat angle steep enough (probably 75 degrees rather than 80). The front end of the tarmac may not allow you to go low enough either. That could result in a crappy Frankenstein position on the tarmac, and make you slow. I have a giant propel and getting in a TT position on it is quite an adventure. As a rule of thumb, I think a real TT bike will be faster than a road bike that you pimp.
Body position is probably the biggest deciding factor. The Boardman is far more upright.
But half the time I don't get his accent. ;-) Where's he from?
I like this "Top Gear " presentation
I kinda prefer the look of the Boardman...
All those upgrades for ÂŁ200!
Should really have been a disc wheel vs disc wheel vs to be fair I think
Have you tested a cheap triathlon bike versus a good UCI-legal one?
Get GTN crew to sign the bike and sell it for ÂŁ10k. đ
Anyone notice their the same wheels that gcn used in the cheap tt bike videos
If you watched the previous video on the bike build, Mark said exactly that, Ollie lent him the wheels.
On the rolling downhill, need to measure the time, not the distance, otherwise you are mostly measung the rolling drag, not the aero drag.
Less aero and rolling drag = quicker speed = more distance. So no.
@@yrjopekkajr actually Matteo may have a point. They don't take the same time to stop, so a higher average speed doesn't necessarily mean longer distance. At the end of the roll, aero plays a relatively small role, so when you stop depends on whether gravity is stronger than rolling resistance. On the other hand, the bike that is more aero will enter that section at a higher speed and have more momentum to lose before it stops.
You definitely robbed the wheels off Ollie Bridgewood from his budget TT bike build he did 6 months ago!
Why not race the budget tt bike at GCN against this the budget Tri bike?
If it was me I would have spent all that extra cash you saved on a wind tunnel optimization session.
Or some time on a velodrome to further tune in your TT position to become even more aero.
I am confused, I watch the olympics and everybody is riding a Tarmac middle of the road bike... The bike doesn't even matter, the gains were in the swimming and running... Is the bike the money maker of the industry?
Olympics uses road bikes and the riders sit in a pelton together, so aerodynamics is considerably a different thing. Also, those athletes are using top of the line road bikes. They were S-Works, and Canyon Aeroroad, and Trek Modone. While the bike may not make as big a difference, a lightweight bike in the Olympics is essential so you push less weight around to have fresher legs for the run.
500 for cash đđ
Hmmm, can't even afford the cheap bike :-(
The rule is always the same: you're not slow, you're just poor :D
invest at least 10% of the cost of the super bike and redo again
2:18 nice d ahh 2
I built my own bike.
What I want to see is an E TT bike vs super aero TT bike with world tour riders at 400W power
That would be fun
They donât tell you those Canyon frames are having severe cracking issues. Rim brake bike definitely faster!
Why donât you compare them for smugness.
Yep, weâre very lucky to be supplied a lovely bike by Canyon. It allows us to make lots of informative videos for free viewing
Infomercials?
@@markthrelfall3577 what integrity does your âsportâ have if you can buy such a massive advantage? Itâs actually embarrassing.
