Shall we try 3 riders vs a TT bike next? đ€
Keep going until the breakaway fails. "Shut up legs!"
Yes
Also,as recent as 2011, well its pretty recent in cycling history đ
No, you should have made Si one of the two duo riders to have that control factor.
Nah how about three GCN riders against one GTN rider, over an Ironman bike leg.....đ€
With everyone on TT bikes, the GTN rider would have the advantage of being more accustomed to riding both the distance and being in the aero position, but the GCN riders have the advantage of being pure cyclists........
Could be interesting as both have advantages and weaknesses
I'm like 30 seconds in and I'm laughing at the idea of Conor sheltering behind Hank.
Hank and Connor should have employed invisible Aero bars in their riding style. Maybe it would have helped.
Was literally thinking the same thing
Conor: What is all that noise?
Wind: It's me.
I was thinking the same thing!
Hank can't shelter behind Conor either, all the air goes underneath
I had no idea how much I'd been missing Si's Beep, beep, beep, beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep....

Siiiiiiiiiiimoooooooon
czcams.com/video/7beck87cKLU/video.html
Yes they need to do that more. I been doing it everytime I start my commute lmao
This now requires a GCN team time trial. Here are the teams, Ollie and Manon, Si and Dan, Hank and Conor
Not a bad idea at all. However, I think Nigel and George should take some part in proceedings.
Manon and Hank are clearly a dream team; put Ollie with Conor, as Ollie's a bit taller and can shelter Conor.
How about GTN vs GCN and have them do both TT and road bikes. You would be emphasizing the roadie bike handling and paceline skills vs the Tri riders having better positions and familiarity with riding a TT bike. My money would be on GTN on the Tri bikes and GCN on the road bikes.
Hm hank and Connor are a bit too strong together
I wonder how much mineral water you have in stock to convince Dan to do a time trial
Best GCN Video in awhile! Enjoyed the screen chemistry of Connor, Hank and Simon! Brought out a real LOL. Thanks!
Really nice & funny video in a while. They should do more stuff like this
I agree, great video. Reminds me of old Top Gear!
Agreed - great vid!
"Just 360 watts"

@@rickjohnson4887 Oh! My mistake! Sorry for misunderstanding.
Puts them at just under a 22 min 10 mile/16km time trial.
Not blistering but still pretty quick. Si was closer to 20 mins.

Siâs face when the time was revealed was priceless.
Hank's reaction says it all đ
@@GreatJoey91 when simon started to laugh, hank knew that he had lost ;-))
Bruh Conor is riding such a large frame that he looks like he is riding a totally different bike compared to Hank...
Thatâs the largest frame Iâve ever seen.
Heâs 6 feet 29 inches. In metric that is one giraffe tall.
czcams.com/video/7beck87cKLU/video.html
He literally is riding a totally different bike, fool.
James Dahl so what 8ft 5inch
Just imagine Si's time if he hadn't taken the Snickers weight penalty...
Or if he had the high socks the UCI is so concerned with.
Or not having the 9 year gap of riding a tt bike
or consumed the Snicker bar prior... an extra 500cal to burn!
More videos like these more like the old gcn videos keep them coming. That TT bike looks amazing I would feel nervous rising a TT bike on a public road.
Si is still a beast though đ
Thumbs up for Si's suffering. His position is not even ultra-refined either. But 360 for 13 mins is solid power on the TT bike.
When following Si on Strava spoilers the video - Sick effort by all three!
spillage at kom zone lol
The Si-borg still has it; he'll be grinning on this one for a while. Ah, the competitor streak runs strong in you Si. Well done mate
poor connor not only had to ride harder on the front than hank as heâs bigger but also then couldnât draft him as his whole upper body broke wind
Scary thought being behind a rider as big as Connor as his whole upper body breaks wind (think about it.... đ)
Colin B thatâs a big concern toođ
ha ha .. breaking wind .. ha ha ( sorry schoolboy humour )
My mom taught 5th grade. She says that men never really outgrow the discovery of the magic of farting as a joke.
She said this while giggling. She was really popular with 5th grade boys. She has some real stinkers to share.
Kimberly Sparkles itâs schoolboy (excuse the sexist term), humour.
You are right, we never grow up, put simply, itâs a release from stress and having to always be grown up.
Tell me youâve never had a secret boogie to a radio track , or done a mildly inappropriate happy celebration, somewhere inappropriate when you thought no one was watching and you were in a great mood because everything was going so right. I know I have. Same thing, itâs just a tension breaker, just with fart humour.
always loved these GCN challenges. Challenge suggestion: GCN presenter relay (two teams). 1 round road, 1 round TT, final round gravel/cross.
Triathletes everywhere just sat up and pulled up their socks-- oh wait.
This episode deserves its own The Breakaway Episode.. Bradley Wiggins sharing his knowledge of time trials, Brian Smith on the big screen analyzing the teamwork of Hank and Connor, Bernie interviewing Si at the end of the race, and Orla interviewing the owner of the Giro Helmet that Si got from GCN HQ.
The perfect trifecta of GCN presenters! This video was brilliant in every way!!
Thanks, Donna!
Nothing better than starting the morning with a GCN vid
This is the quality content I come here for. Congrats Si! That was amazing effort by all of them!
I paused at "just 360 Watts" to cry
Si says he has âno one to let him down,â seemingly forgetting about himself
But he didn't! Even though he thought he would!
Yes! This content is so awesome! Like the content you produced four years ago!!! More like this
Thanks guys!!!! Always fun watching you.
Really good watch that one. Loved the result reveal and shock. That is quite some time difference. As others have said, more content like this please.
James and Connor look like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito characters in the movie âTwinsâ đ

You guys made that a lot of fun. Thanks. Amazed by result, too. Instructive!
So great serie! I sure that will be on top in end of 2021!
Si âthis is my aero dance!â Brilliant
I think if they had trained together to achieve smoother through and off and work on positioning behind the lead rider it definitely would have been slightly the other way...
Yes let's see 3 against one

Si throwing his celebration trophy on the floor after being so happy wanting to share it was really sad. I hope you enjoyed it, well deserved! Cracking vid for everything else in it though :D
This is a great episode! Excellent work Simon! I recently acquired a TT bike and I am smashing a lot of the local KOMs đđ»Thanks for another great show!
That was awesooommmmeeeee. I wasn't quite sure which team to side with at the beginning. Aerodynamics over wattage.
My god that TT bike is beautiful.

Saw something like this in a way today at the Giro Stage 8 with Alex Dowsett, Congrats!
Probably the best GCN video Iâve seen in a long, long time. Chapeau chaps đđđ
This was a very entertaining video! Great job!
Not the result that I expected, but then Conor and James-Hank didnât appear to have ridden very well together. It looks as if Hank kept dropping Conor which forced him to have dig deeper to get back up to the wheel each time Hank pulled through. That would have very quickly slowed their overall pace as Conor became progressively tired and therefore slower each time he had to pull.
Best video for a good while. Thereâs no way Si kept that snack on the bike the whole time though. It must weigh 30g.
great video guys! you are one of the few things I can watch that bring real joy in this gloomy year :)
Lovely video, lads. Just the right amount of nerdiness, homour and epic racing! Si, you can never leave GCN, you damn legendđ€©
I always predicted the TT position would win.
On another note I reckon Hank and Conor should have been doing slightly longer efforts as with the short efforts there is more time spent side by side where they are both getting no benefit of drafting.
It's an interesting optimisation question
How do you know how long their efforts have been?
@@luca3976 . They mention it during the video.
This was actually super thrilling to watch, I was so sure 2 rides would be faster. And I mean.. Hanks riding position is not exactly "not aero" đ
This episode made LOL a lot. Top work guys!
This is the content I was waiting for! Keep it up GCN
I love this kind of video. Reminds me of the good days of Top Gear. So does that make Si as Clarkson and Conor as May, and James is Hammond. Doc Ollie is definitely coming after to regain that KOM. More please.
Top Ring lol
Ollie just needs to pull out a recumbent and one up Si.

I am American and an avid GCN fan! You guys and gals are amazing and I love you all! Your tips and advice are truly helpful and you are an inspiration to cyclists like me. Thank you so much for your experience and insight. Today is October 10, 2020. I am 55 today and fit. My Birthday by coincidence. I would love to somehow be a part of your team.
Iâd love to see these longer like the grand tour but with bikes instead.
With Matt...
they must build their own bikes with second hand components all totaling less than 1000 gbp then ride 200 km race, losers donate their bikes to a local bike club to get new riders into the sport.
I think Alex Dowsett just proved that one time trialist on a normal bike can beat five (and later two) guys working together on similar bikes.
Love it. More of these challenges please.
Very cool. I did not expect that result at all. Now I would like to see a head to head test of a typical old school TT bike from 10 years ago, vs that new tech monster Orbea.
Iâm increasingly amazed by aero, the boys were absolutely going for it and were nowhere near! Might need to save up for an tt bike, might be able to buy one in 10 years time.
They're about half as fast as a Milan and a lot more expensive.
10:11 Happiest. Face. Ever.
Ah I loved this, back to good old GCN days. Thanks for making me smile
Fun video! I really appreciate the high production values, your videos are always visually pleasing. Are there any videos set in Ireland? If not, I'd love to see that!
I saw one man on a recumbent take on a whole peloton in an open event. Aero is definitely King.
Finish Strong Cycling until you get to the hill.
@@favorites673 Agreed
Ah shoot, when I saw the thumbnail I thought this was going to be a video about you guys riding a tandem bike vs a tt bike and I got so excited
One of the best little edits from GCN of late - enjoyed this, well done lads.
This is like Top Gear for Cycling enthusiasts - brilliant video, I loved the balance of bravado banter vs technical review.
"I was doing 400 watts just holding your wheel" Well, yeah, no draft...LOL!
You need to put them on a tandem!!
A tandem TT bike (or would that technically be a TTT bike?) would be awesome
This is good content. Love watching these guys!
The reactions are great. Everybody had a great time. Biggest smile from SI ever
Maybe do this with two roadies who are more closely matched in stature so they actually benefit from drafting. This may change the results more in favour to the roadies.
Whenever I pass someone on a time trial bike I always give them a wide girth so I donât upset their aerodynamic advantage.
I think you mean berth

That was a really fun video! Grateful on the win and the KOM lol well deserved đ
I had too much fun watching this haha Big ups from SĂŁo Paulo!!
Does Conor actually get any draft at all following Hank?!
He only gets a draft following a bus.
Have they done anything on drafting with different sized riders. Personally I donât notice a huge difference when drafting big vs small guys...maybe the deflection of the wind means even a small guy puts out a big pocket of clean air
@@jwfriar My friend and I compared this. I'm over 190, he's like 170. We did a 5 minute strava segment and when he was behind me he was in Z2. When I was behind him I was still above threshold. On the flat we have a similar strength
philip k Yeah - I wonder too if itâs shape as well as weight. I have a buddy with super broad shoulders and I suspect heâs just not aero at all, but prob gives me a better draft than a more narrow shouldered person.
I am 6'6". I have no idea whether Zwift is realistic or not, but I never notice any draft effect when I'm outside riding with people. I admit I don't get much of it in zwift either since people just pass me not giving me a chance to draft :)
Conor looks like he's 9 feet tall
He is

This is cursed
This is cursed
I would not want to get a seat behind him in the cinema.
Absolute banger of a video missed this kinda content đ
That was a great video, guys. Si looked super-smooth on the Ordu. I shall go and spend the winter training to ride like Si for next season!
Impressive as hell, but how much does aero help for mere mortals like me who struggle to hold 250W for more than about five minutes? I'd love to see you guys run another vid like this but perhaps trying to stick to average power levels like, say, the sustained ~200W of your amateur or CAT5 racer.
My physics calculator says at 200 watts over a pan flat 40k with no wind, you'd save roughly 10~15 minutes between an extremely dialed TT fit and a very draggy road bike. You can do a 40k TT in just about an hour on 200 watts on that kind of course, maybe even quicker on an indoor track. Less powerful riders actually save more time over the same distance than more powerful riders, counter-intuitive as it may seem.
@@paperwind
The drag increases by the square of the speed but the drag is proportional to aero coefficient and cross section. So if you are more powerful, you will be on the higher end speeds, where drag is dictated by speed^2, reducing a little bit the aero coefficient will allow you to gain a little bit more speed, but 2kph more when youâre already at 50 is a big difference, no matter the aero coefficient.
But for a 200w rider as you say, the same aero bike would boost him from 35 to 38 kph.
52^2 -50^2 = 204
38^2-35^2 = 219
That means that (the effort you need to add or) the drag you need to reduce is somewhat the same if you want to go from 35 avg to 38 avg compared to 50 avg to 52 avg.
+3 kph for a 35 kph rider is +8,5% speed
+2 kph for a 50 kph rider is +4% speed
Itâs literally twice as effective !
Chris Fanning Easy to do. Ask dan to ride
Time saved over a given distance tends to be a good indicator of aero savings, as it remains almost constant regardless of you power output.
Incidentally I just tried short aero bars on my road bike today. I'll have to work on the position, but being able to reach and sometimes exceed a cruising speed of 40km/h on the flat is a nice feeling!
Get a racing recumbent like Cruzbike V20, Bachetta CA3, Pelso Brevet, Schlitter Freestyle, M5 CHR, Carbent, Morciglio M1, etc and watch how fast you become. bonus if you go straight to fast velomobiles like Alpha7, Milan, DF and smoke any pro on the flats
The result was expected.
But what I'd like to know - How much fitness has Conor lost in a year? Last year he was holding 440 watts easily for "how long can you hold world hour record pace". This was only a 10km effort, could he hold 440watts for this?
Great video guys. cheers,
Great video, hilarious! Well done guys!
