  • A UCI time trial bike vs triathlon bike, is there even any difference? Well, not quite, whilst they may look very similar, there are in fact many significant differences. Mark has taken both to Castle Coombe race circuit to put them to the test!

      Overall watt saving doesn't change at lower power output. Faster rider on same bike benefits more, let's say by 10w but finishes the course faster. Slower rider on same bike saves less watts due to being slower but the overall saving is the same because the elapsed time is greater than that of the faster rider. So you are basically saving more watts and having less time to optimize gains, or saving less watts but taking more time and matching it out in the long run.

      @@5we3zy That would be true if aerodynamic drag didn't scale to the square of velocity. Of course the trend remains the same, but the magnitude will be different.

    Coombe is a 3km track, his 2-lap time was 8:16 vs 8:20, so his 1-lap time was 4:08 vs 4:10. So a difference 2-seconds per 3km. An Ironman is 180km. Since 3*60=180km then 2*60=120 seconds over the course of an Ironman. And that's at 300 watts average on a flat course, at that point you're basically Lionel Sanders.

    I have been waiting for this video. Now I know better: my UCI legal Cervélo TT bike may be around 60 sec slower on a 70.3 compared to a tri bike. I think it is even less than that since the gap between both tested bikes could have been less if more adaptation time and better positioning had been done for the TT legal bike. To me, loosing 1-2 min for a half sound like a lot, but less than the cash needed to buy a new costly only tri bike.

  • @joeyc8546
    @joeyc8546 Před 3 lety +6

    TT bikes are great! Done several Ironman races with mine and the storage is just enough. Nothing like the class of the triathlon bikes but good enough for the event. They look sleek and familiar. Not too much time loss there and feel comfortable in the tribar position. What is the side wind effect on triathlon bikes compared to TT bikes? Bad enough with deep wheels let alone a sail for a bike in challenging weather.

    Of course, don't forget that you and your body is more used to your Tri bike and not the TT bike. the Tri bike was built (fit) around you. The TT bike was built around a different person. this would also mean that you could probably access your muscles better on your own bike than on a strange one. A bike that is different or uncomfortable may be more aerodynamic, but if someone can't access their muscles properly, my guess is that it won't work. Of course, this is just my opinion so, please, take it only for what it's worth. There are greater minds than mine that can figure this stuff out much better. Thanks. Cool video.
