- A UCI time trial bike vs triathlon bike, is there even any difference? Well, not quite, whilst they may look very similar, there are in fact many significant differences. Mark has taken both to Castle Coombe race circuit to put them to the test!

Another crossover between GTN and GCN. Loving it
Sooooo boring....
I love the random bits of broken off sticks to prop up the bikes at the start.
Could you... like... do the same thing riding at 200W? ... asking for a friend...
Maybe 150W? Asking for a friend too...
Overall watt saving doesn't change at lower power output. Faster rider on same bike benefits more, let's say by 10w but finishes the course faster. Slower rider on same bike saves less watts due to being slower but the overall saving is the same because the elapsed time is greater than that of the faster rider. So you are basically saving more watts and having less time to optimize gains, or saving less watts but taking more time and matching it out in the long run.
@@5we3zy That would be true if aerodynamic drag didn't scale to the square of velocity. Of course the trend remains the same, but the magnitude will be different.
Coombe is a 3km track, his 2-lap time was 8:16 vs 8:20, so his 1-lap time was 4:08 vs 4:10. So a difference 2-seconds per 3km. An Ironman is 180km. Since 3*60=180km then 2*60=120 seconds over the course of an Ironman. And that's at 300 watts average on a flat course, at that point you're basically Lionel Sanders.
Ollie! Haha he is hilarious glad to see him pop up on the GTN
Ollie would be the UCI rule enforcer, you have to do something to let out the frustration of being dropped. 😄
That's probably why they're so strict tbh... lol
Dropped...TWICE!
Nice pun there "that Felt fast" 🤣
With such a small difference, also powermeter calibration could have played a role. One bike has a crank-based power meter, the other has PowerTap pedals.
Also, the draft the camera bike had on the runs
Ollie at GTN, hahaha brilliant video this time again guys!
YES! A rolling start finally, my inner OCD has been satisfied! Thank you GTN!🙃
I have JUST been looking all over the internet this week for this info
Perfect timing for this video : )
Would love to have seen what the 2 bikes looked like overlapped with each other to be able to see the relative seat, handlebar etc positions.
How it actually felt, well i see what you did there.
That tri bike is a thing of beauty. Riding an old cervelo myself, I hope one day to own one of these more modern design tri bike
Just got done converting a 2018 felt b14 tri bike to a road bike and love it so far!
This is the video that got me to subscribe, thanks for the quality content
Conner is really coming into his own as a presenter. Very well done. Keep it up.
At the end of the day I think the more comfortable position on the triathlon bike is the key difference.
Thank you for finally presenting a Felt bike! ❤️
I have been waiting for this video. Now I know better: my UCI legal Cervélo TT bike may be around 60 sec slower on a 70.3 compared to a tri bike. I think it is even less than that since the gap between both tested bikes could have been less if more adaptation time and better positioning had been done for the TT legal bike. To me, loosing 1-2 min for a half sound like a lot, but less than the cash needed to buy a new costly only tri bike.
TT bikes are great! Done several Ironman races with mine and the storage is just enough. Nothing like the class of the triathlon bikes but good enough for the event. They look sleek and familiar. Not too much time loss there and feel comfortable in the tribar position. What is the side wind effect on triathlon bikes compared to TT bikes? Bad enough with deep wheels let alone a sail for a bike in challenging weather.
That FELT fast😂
Ollie! best dual GCN/GTC presenter
You can hear the contempt for the UCI in this video. I like, would watch again.
That Met Helmet is awesome!
Would Ollie still be dropped?
LOL @ the upturned bullhorn bar on the Tri bike.
Felt word count: ????
The nice felt bike felt nice
Very impressive and innovative useful speed machine technology video review....!
Of course, don't forget that you and your body is more used to your Tri bike and not the TT bike. the Tri bike was built (fit) around you. The TT bike was built around a different person. this would also mean that you could probably access your muscles better on your own bike than on a strange one. A bike that is different or uncomfortable may be more aerodynamic, but if someone can't access their muscles properly, my guess is that it won't work. Of course, this is just my opinion so, please, take it only for what it's worth. There are greater minds than mine that can figure this stuff out much better. Thanks. Cool video.
The wooden stands in the beginning of the video though 🤣
They are organic; 100% recyclable
Simon be like: Well, it seems that I need to go to the dark (UCI illegal) side of the bikes to be the supreme presenter in GCN XD
Nice kickstands!
My 2009 Felt S22 TT bike is still going strong, only thing that holds it back is external routing
For UCI enduro req's riding the TT twice a week or more to not be sore from a long one a reaction, from track a high saddle helps open the hips & gain more glut's to work for power.
Ymmv, cheers🍺
Nice bike hope to have one.
Wondering how close a TT bike and a Tri bike are on a hillier course, or when the TT can use a rear disc...
The tri bike can use a disk wheel, too, though
Tt bike is lighter
A tri bike would be a nice addition but well out of my budget. I will just be happy with my LOOK 695 SR. Used of course but still my baby in the race. Great video Thanks.
LMAO!!
OLLIE! May! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love it guys 😃🤩
We need one head-to-head of a triathlon bike vs an aero road bike 😬
thanks appreciated greatvideo
Glad it helped! 🙌 Have you seen our video on road bike vs tri bike? 👉 czcams.com/video/fTGOliHmIcg/video.html 👀
Nice vid guys
CROSSOVER EPISODE!
Don't forget about the aero penalty of strapping stuff onto the tt bike whereas the trip bike has it all accounted for with integrated storage
This video mainly shows what whatever you ride, you have to get used to the position!
For me, I like slim aero tubes and the tt look better. It is more than 10years old design so a new one is coming soon, maybe.
do the gear ratios make any diference here? looks like the TT has a bigger chainring
A few seconds could have been from the start of the TT since you weren't in the bars until just before the line
Think GTN and GCN should sign up for a BHPC race with Steve Slade in it
Would be interesting to know your actual watts and more importantly Heart Rate data
302 W on the tri bike...but what was the average Wattage on the UCI-legal bike that resulted in the 4 second time difference? Critical piece of info here. Did I miss it?
Yeah gcn failed and didn't record it
@6:32 dunno how reliable an aero test will be if the camera moto is driving 2m in front of the bike. hopefully this wasn`t shot on the testrun
We get pretty cutaways after the tests so that you have something nice to watch
@@markthrelfall3577 Love to hear that. You guys know how it's done
ok at 300w but, if you race your clone. whitch one is the fastest bike ?
Welcome Ollie !!
Does the handlebar stem adjust up?
So the UCI TT Bike is basically a "normal" aero bike with a TT cockpit, which is pretty cool as is... I just love aero bikes :x
I Love Felt Bikes 😍
Can they climb cobble stone?
What about the TT bike vs the Felt Aero (AR) bike?
Most people would never ride a Triathlon or TT bike. But, the aero is a road bike (and conforms to UCI rules)
We have that video on our channel already 👍 czcams.com/video/BwbTD8dU8LY/video.html
Is it worth it to buy a tt/tri bike as my second bike? I don’t compete in time trials or triathlons but they look cool and fun. I’ve heard about how they’re horribly suited to normal road riding but I was wondering if I’d still get some fun out of it on a solo ride.
It's all about passion, isn't it? A bike you enjoy, will bring you joy👍
For the money it will most likely cost unless you take riding serious I’d say you’re better off just adding those aero tt bars to your regular road bike for the aero positioning
I ride the Felt IA10 and also a TT bike and do not compete. Enormous feel good value. You feel good, you ride well!
a TT are usually unstable, so you must pay attention when riding....a ride bike, serious, not for going to walmart casually for milk
Can you do a triathlon on a recumbent?
It depends on the race officials whether they force rules from ITU or have their own and whether they give you some special permision, pardon, exception... but usually no, the recumbents are banned on most of races, because recumbent manufactures don't sponsor tt races. ;-)
On this race (Triathlon Pardubice in the Czech republic) the recumbens were allowed only in year 2016 so I filmed...
czcams.com/video/VNSWXM8qajA/video.html
i wish i have one of this bikes 🥺
I like the bike stand
#askgcntech there is a tendency for TT riders to set up their handlebar higher than previously. What is an average of the difference between bar/cup height and saddle height?
Bike shortage is so bad that they needed to take/barrow a pro bike to be able to test a bike
Is it possible/legal to use a recumbent bike at a Triathlon race?
should asked Ollie for some GCN Shadow stands to GTN for the videos
The first triathlete to swap to a recumbent is going to smash up the field... for one race until everyone’s got one.
With that times just using 302w over 300w would make the difference.
why road bikes have so slack seat tube angle??? 73-73.5* ??? i seat like 2-3cm more back than on my MTB bike ! (with STa=76-78*)
Ollie was the only presenter willing to be seen with one of those Triathlon guys. Si would have just laughed at him the whole time.
Did you grab sticks off the ground to prop up your bikes ? 😄
your position looked better on the tt bike, i think because of the bars
Connor can run his bars at 85cm. Bonus exception of +5cm for being taller than 190cm. It's not as generous as it sounds, bane of my existence
I’d like to see more data for the “faster” claim, how about cornering? How about the exact same power? And maybe even the weather? The wind could just be a bit different resulting into bad comparisons. These test are fun to watch but don’t tell us anything. I’d like to see real data from a aerodynamic test center with a windtunnel.
Of course we’d love to do that, but trying to get in a wind tunnel for all of these videos just isn’t feasible. The aim is to provide information, and a fun test to go with it
Thx for your response @@markthrelfall3577 I’m aware that take a lot of time effort and money an please do keep making these video’s, they have a lot of entertainment value!
oh my god the spindown sound at 6:54. soundsa bit like a turbine
Where is Fraser?
LOL! How he 'felt' faster, on a Felt bike. Of course he did!
😂
No rules for the Tri bike??? It isn't a velomobile or recumbent.... definitely not the fastest possible design, but I hope the rules are relaxed even further to allow more creativity and much faster bikes!!
Where are the brakes on that TT bike?
@@mrnobodyplays147 Oh, I see it now! thanks!!
hahah Geez... Ollie and Time Trail should not be in the same video for a while. :P
Another question i personally have, i just bought a road bike but y the hek are tri/aero bikes soooooooooo expensive
Marketing
Why is Ollie doing a Micheal Cane voice
For the UCI legal bike, you can’t hand a bottle to a child
Racing a tt or a tri bike is like using a 4 cylinder car vs a miclarion f1 , no way my brick wall mean touring bike can even try
they both came with wooden kickstands???
without an ceepo shadow r or cervelo p3x or p5x .... sad
Funny how such technologically advanced bikes made with state of the art technology that probably cost as much as a car RELIES ON A FUCKING WOODEN STICK TO STAY UPRIGHT!
Surely the UCI TT bike should have had a disc wheel???
did you use the same wheel depth? if not there is your 4 secs
Exactly the same wheel model and depth
The real deal here is the piece of twig as bike stand 🤣🤣🤣✌️✌️
Uci exists to make riding less fun.. kinda like the golfing governing body?
Time to convert my foldie to a triathlon bike ... LOL
I like the time trial bike better.
TT bike has it for me.
science!
...enter ollie :)
Bike de ciclismo X bike de gincana 😂😂😂
If there are no rules for triathlons, why aren't folks riding recumbent bikes?
Just another thing for me to tease the roadies with ;0
Buuuut, the canyon vs felt? :p
😁
