Imagine if we got stormtroopers like this in Star Wars Rebels, would’ve given that show more depth in regards to showing the imperial side. Only one you can truly sympathize with is Kallus, whereas the Stormtroopers themselves are treated like jokes and given no defining qualities. But ultimately the goal of Rebels was just the formation of the Rebellion, so to that degree I could understand why the imperial side wasn’t humanized.

Eh...I'd argue you could make a case for Thrawn too. Sure, he was a villain through and through, and was as ruthless as any other Imperial when the chips were down (albeit he was a pragmatist surrounded by sadists), but he represented THE model Imperial officer, the kind of leader that everybody in the Empire should have aspired to become. One could only imagine what the Empire would have ended up like if, somehow, Palpatine had died and he ended up in charge of it (or if Palpatine’s succesor had tasked Thrawn with developing a replacement for the Tarkin Doctrine after recognizing its flaws). Maybe the Galactic Civil War would never have happened - a rebellion of some sort would have still occurred, but it would've remained dispersed between isolated cells and never have grown into a large militarized force with a coherent, unified goal.

      That isn't the point.
The point is that of those ON the Death Star, like those ON Alderaan, only a handful were involved in any of what happened. Tarkin gave an order, one dude relayed it, and a few powered up the cannon and aimed. What did janitor Steve down on Deck Forty Two and is wife, Sarah, or Tom and Brady, their sons, have to do with it? Nothing at all. Hell, what did the third shift gunner in the exact position Tarkin's shooter was later on do? Nothing.
      They all died, though.
That is the point. Aside from the Emperor and his direct circle, most Imperials were just people doing their jobs, trying to do what they THOUGHT was right. Hell, the Empire was many's first taste of real peace after the Clone Wars.
It's easy for us to judge from the outside perspective, knowing the Clone Wars and the Civil War as near omnisciently as we do. But some twenty something from a world that was covered in war for most of his youth until the Empire ended it? He doesn't see that.

Many of whom were civilian contractors. Liam would have came from somewhere that likely benefitted from or was less impacted by the Empire. Areas where the Republic had neglected or completely allowed to degrade while the war effort was focused on core systems and defending existing territory. As he mentioned as well, not every Imperial agreed with the methods of fighting the Rebellion (especially the decimation of entire planets) as it only drove more people to join the Alliance including some Imperials.
But also, many Imperial joined because they wanted to avoid a repeat of the conditions that lead to the Clone Wars but also the death of so many people who they believed deserved to leave equally in peace and saw the flaws of the Grand Republic including the corruption that made it so bad and allowed the conflict to escalate and expand across the systems. Some certainly joined because they just wanted money and didn't care about the ethics of any of it- that goes for both factions.
It's easier to deny the humanity of your enemy when you refuse to identify that they are human too, they are just different in ideological stand points or conditions that pushed them to join that faction - the armor makes troopers look like robots and no one sees them without helmets so it's far easier to kill them and never think twice about it.

There are heroes/good people on each side of every war, following orders and doing what they believe is right for their people and their country. They don't always agree with decisions made by their leaders, but they stay loyal to their people. You can clearly see that these are two good men on opposite sides of the conflict. An amazing short story to drive this point home.

I can almost picture it. One day far in the future, these two will be sitting in a cantina together. Wrinkled faces laughing as they find good company with each other. The bartender is giving them a refill on drinks before asking "You two have been coming here for almost fifty years. Got a story to share?"
After a somewhat surprised pause from Liam and Gilian, they look at one another with a grin.
Liam: "Well, it's a long story."
Yes, that's probably cringeworthy to read, but my point still stands. I just want to see more of these two even though the short is precisely as long as it needs to be. Amazing work. ^_^

I know Rogue One and Rebels showed more of the dark side of the Rebellion, showing that they had members who were willing to go to extremes to get the job done (assassinations, bombings, more terroristic actions) and even just some people who enjoyed conflict, but we so rarely get to see the Imperial side, the soldiers who don't entirely agree with certain orders, but still think that it is the best option for the galaxy after all then turmoil during the waning years of the Republic. There is a two sides to every story and we don't always listen to both sides, so I just got to say, well done.
