Jeff Lynne of ELO said he'd never be part of a Movie again but changed his mind with Boogie Nights & The Virgin Suicides. This reminds me of Lace where Judy, Pagan (whose real name is Jennifer), and Maxime. They reunite after many years being apart and then the truth comes out so to speak.

I think that Kleber didn't say anything because he was paralyzed with fear, shock, and shame. Can you imagine how awful it was to live with something like that for 25 Years. It kind of reminds me of Corrine Foxworth Dollananger Winslow who locked her Children away for Three Years, one of which died, three escaped and kept it quiet for 12 years until the truth was told and in front of folks who had known her since she came back to Virginia in 1957 after 15 Years.
From the novel by Thomas Thompson. The character of Kleber Cantrell resembles Thompson in appearance and career. Thompson was born in Fort Worth Texas in 1933. He became a reporter at the Houston Press newspaper. He then joined Life magazine as a writer in 1961. He covered the JFK assassination and was the first writer to find Oswald's house and wife. His other books were based on true stories...Lost, Blood and Money, Serpentine. He died in 1982.
Michael Beck's character totally deserved what happened to him. This movie offers a cogent reminder that sometimes justice cannot be served by a courtroom judge or jury.
Just a few observations about this marvelous miniseries that I rediscovered after many decades. I remembered a lot about the miniseries and a lot I forgot. I didn't quite remember how it all went down at the cabin. So that was quite daunting. I was a gay 19 year old in Feb. 1984 about to enter my 20's in a couple of weeks when this originally aired. So obviously I was very intrigued by Joseph Bottoms' story as a conflicted gay man in the '60s and '70s. There were several story lines that I guess we were suppose to draw our own conclusions from. Like, did T.J. really die in the courtroom after being stabbed by Laurie. I like to think he did. He was pure evil. I wonder how Kleber's life ended up? Did he and Ceil stay together? She was supporting him through all this, but was their marriage strong enough to last? What about Jeffie? We didn't see him at all after the shooting? Did he ever come around and forgive his father even though he died? I just wish Mack didn't have to die. Mack having all that unnecessary guilt all of those years, never knowing that Laurie didn't die after all. I also can't believe that Ben, Joseph, and or Michael weren't nominated for Emmys that year. Such solid performances by all three. 🤔🤔😊😊
If u read the novel, in the epilogue which takes place Xmas Eve 5 yrs later u will discover that T.J. actually did NOT die, but remained in a deep coma. His body was displayed @ The City of Miracles as some sort of shrine for his few remaining followers. Ceil & Kleber did remain together they lived a secluded life in New Hampshire, I believe. Unlike the miniseries they never had a daughter, instead she had a change of life baby son. Later Mack's son guilt-ridden manages to them down & finally talks to a hostile Kleber. He admits the Chosen was a fraud, & although Mack had left his entire fortune to him he was miserable because he couldn't run away from himself. He wanted to tell the story & needed Kleeber's help. In the end, Kelber comes around &starts writing a story about him &his boyhood buddies, which is no doubt therapeutic for him too.
Very well done bringing 3 stories and tying them up nice and neat at the end. I really enjoyed watching this mini series. It was a pleasure to see good story telling on film.😊
I also loved Lace as well. I think it was the first Miniseries I saw where The Women were just as strong and tough as their Male Counterparts. When I saw the Paperback Version of Celebrity, The Stepback was really amazing including a section with two men one of which had his jeans unzipped.

I also remember reading Flowers In The Attic, my Friend liked Books of the Horror Genre. When she told me the plot, I said she was crazy no mother would do that and she said "Want To Bet".

Brilliant, riveting production. The miniseries debuted when I was a young teen, and I was so upset by the rape/'murder' scene that I turned off the TV and never revisited the show. I'm glad that I did, as it is an excellent film. And I'm so glad that Lori survived and got her revenge--don't know about anyone else, I rewatched the ending several times to see the creepozoid get his comeuppance. lol
I enjoyed this when it first aired. I would love to see a modern treatment of this as many of the plot elements are still relevant, if not more so. I remember as a 10 year old being shocked by Mack coming out to his best friend and his son seeing him with his lover. I think a Prime series could dig deeper into the many layers of this awesome min series.
I saw this in 1984. I was a sophomore in high school, soon to turn 16. I went out and bought the book, and read it. I feel like the book tied up loose ends that the mini-series left dangling, I can’t remember.
I think that both Kleber & Mac were in shock over what happened. TJ was very narcistic, very manipulative and getting what he wanted from folks. Also deep down I feel he was jealous of Mac & Kleber. Kleber was going up North and studied at America's Top Journalism School, Mac went to College on a Sports Scholarship. TJ didn't hold a candle to those two.
The Twin Towers are incorrect in the establishing shot for NYC 1969. Aside from this anachronism, I really enjoyed this '80s mini-series, it's one of my top 5. I watched it as a young teen the first time it aired, and the content seemed very racy😊. It is very much a longitudinal saga of its time: a bit cheesy and too slow at the start. The actors are all nice looking which helps (Joseph Bottoms is perfect as a charming adonis 💋). Once it gets going it is highly enjoyable hokum, though the far-fetched plot doesn't stand up to much scrutiny! But, as pure entertainment, it does a great job. The actor playing TJ gives a tour de force performance as both a wayward youth and a dangerous, rogue TV evangelist. A very convincing and charismatic actor 🏆. I was very glad to see this again after 39 years!

It reminds me of the Book A Season In Purgatory where Harrison Burns A Bestselling Celebrity Novelist tells his Wife of a horrible thing that happened when he was an 18 Year Old Boy. He lost his parents, his only relative was his Aunt Gert, and he was Best Friends with Constant Bradley whose Family were like The Kennedys. He helped Constant hide the fact that he murdered a Girl named Luanne Utley. He kept it a Secret for 16 Years and finally broke down and told his Wife Claire what happened. She was shocked but she had sympathy. He had no other Family, his Family didn't leave much Moeny for him so Constant's Father Gerald paid for his Tuition and all but owned him with his Money.

They don't play The Hollywood Game and although The Phoenix Children's Childhood was haunting, they still perservered. I loved Rooney in The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo and Carol.
When Mac talked about going to Therapy he was doing what alot of Gay Men did over the years including The Late Chester Weinberg who was once Calvin Klein's Mentor. He stopped going because he realized there was nothing wrong with him being Gay and it was the 1960's. Sadly he would die of AIDS Related illnesses in the 1990's.
Most people make wrong choices in their youth years. To attempt to cover a rape and murder while leaving a body behind is criminal. It is a good story with some good acting, a little too long for my taste but I was curious about the ending.
Religion can be a circus. In this case people are following a leader who is a rapist, murder, a pimp who goes to jail but finds God with his new freedom. One thing is to have fate in God but another is to follow the wrong leader.
I had no idea that Joseph Bottoms was related to Timothy Bottoms (who played "Hart") in The Movie Version of The Paper Chase based on the Bestselling Book by John Jay Osborn Jr.

It showed me that although you could have every advantage in the wrold, it doesn't mean anything. Hart was Middle Class but he was the Best Student in The Contracts Class.
TJ was so pathetic, okay Kleber gave him the brushoff but he was a reporter covering the assasination of the leader of the free world. He was still making his bones as a reporter, folks all over the world were devastated and stunned at his death.
When TJ's followers saw him on the floor with blood on his Body, I wondered where they more shocked after his being stabbed or for what he did to Sister Crystal/Laurie who was his most devoted disciple.
All these 'mini-series' back then were sold under the pretense of a lifetime with a deep, dark secret, but everybody was figuring out what was going to happen from the get-go. As soon as we saw the tragic singer, everyone watching knew it was the girl they had raped and thought had died.
Spoiler alert! LOL. I thought it was his wife that was out in the asylum. I’m watching it on my phone screen and couldn’t see her face well when she was singing. I did think the girl probably didn’t die but I didn’t put that together. I should have!
@@seaglasssparkles6910 they were all so convoluted with their little attempts at surprises, and everyone could see them coming, so the ratings got lower, then the next mini-series was shorter. I don't think any of them managed to surprise anyone. For the record, this one and Chiefs, which is also on youtube, were voted two of the worst miniseries back then. Oddly enough, a miniseries about Pompeii aired opposite the second installment of V. V beat Pompeii, but I actually enjoy Pompeii more. Didn't really care for V. The problem with Pompeii, again, is you might as well scoot all the way to about the last forty minutes to see something. That's when the volcano finally erupted. Pompeii is on youtube here as well.

Whoever wrote this was channeling himself as 'the writer who would save the day'. I don't even remember why they had to meet back at the cabin like that. It wasn't something that went on to affect anybody's life. If they had been anywhere else and JT shot Mack like that, there would have been no reason to mention Laura at the trial, so then what? Hey, look! Fresno is on youtube! Now THAT was a miniseries!
Richard Fuller V had the benefit of having a built in audience from the prior year when the original V miniseries was a huge hit. My friends and I, we were kids, were split on whether to watch V or Pompeii but it was an easy choice for me because of how into V the original I was. V was fairly groundbreaking for a television miniseries at the time, especially given the state of science fiction special effects. P.S. the actor who plays the son in this miniseries was also in V. (the son when he is older. in the younger years he was played by River Phoenix).
On The US Soap Opera Guiding Light, Harlan Billy Lewis III aka "Little Billy" then "Little Bill" then plain old "Bill", talked to both of his Grandfathers as well as his Cousin Ben about what they wanted to do with their lives when they grew up. Bill becomes a successful Businessman working in The Town of Springfield where Cousin Ben kills himself.
No. It was Laurie. She had not died as the boys thought. She was only unconscious, had amnesia, and ended up in a mental institution, from which "The Chosen" rescued her.

It triggered something in her memory that's why the camera zoomed in on her @ 1:17:31 as she was scrutinizing him. Dead giveaway if u ask me. Then that night when she awoke from a nightmare, pulled that newspaper out from underneath her mattress, who else could it be? However, in the novel, she was sitting next to the sketch artist in the courtroom watching him sketch depictions of the rape scene when her memory came back in full force and she did the deed.
I never thought of it that way. A similar storyline happened on Guiding Light in November 2006 where Olivia Spencer had a flashback and discovered that the man running for town mayor Jeffrey O'Neil was the same person who raped her when she was 16. He was passing himself off as a prince of a small principality. He was a modern day top ripley but he did take accountability for what he did. He was Prince Richard's Doppelganger.
I watched all three parts, a week ago, back to back. I've never seen/watched this before. All three of those guys had issues. Especially "T.J." The irony is, there are still a lot of people/"men" like those three male characters. A lot of people still don't like/want to grow up, wake up, learn, pay attention, nor care about/for each other. So-called christianity/religion is also/still another problem. There was a good reason why "Mack", especially, tried his best to stay away from "T.J." If friendship is real, and or lasts for years, it is extremely rare. Thank goodness I stopped having so-called friends.
So many Gay Men talked to Psychologists, and many of them was because they wanted to go straight. Donald in The Boys In The Band, Chester Weinberg Calvin Klein's former Mentor who died of Aids, and in other novels that I have read over the years. Some get help, others have their counselors stop working wth them because of their attitude.
Strong story? Maybe in the 80’s it was . I watched this in 1984 with my family I was 17 . Tried to watch it again. It’s terrible the whole movie could easily have been two hours. No character development at all. Horrible acting. Predictable plot no surprises at all. Kinda like trying to watch Chiefs mini series again it just don’t work .

Hal Holbrook (R.I.P.) is wonderful in this riveting story of three friends who made stupid choices.

I loved those Old School Miniseries from Roots, The Thorn Birds, this one and I'll Take Manhattan.

Why was his followers so upset when TJ was stabbed? They should have been relaxed knowing God would save his Chosen from dying.

When I Saw The Lady Singing, I thought she was praying for TJ's Soul. Boy what a surprise did I get.
I do understand, he is knife by Laurie Killman herself, the catatonic girl in the institution without a voice.
Most people make wrong choices in their youth years. To attempt to cover a rape and murder while leaving a body behind is criminal. It is a good story with some good acting, a little too long for my taste but I was curious about the ending.
Religion can be a circus. In this case people are following a leader who is a rapist, murder, a pimp who goes to jail but finds God with his new freedom. One thing is to have fate in God but another is to follow the wrong leader.
I had no idea that Joseph Bottoms was related to Timothy Bottoms (who played "Hart") in The Movie Version of The Paper Chase based on the Bestselling Book by John Jay Osborn Jr.
And they guy who played Jeffie as one of the chosen was in The Paper Chase TV show.
@@seaglasssparkles6910 Who did he play? I remember watchng it on CBS before it went to Cable. I loved Reading The Book and Movie. It showed me that although you could have every advantage in the wrold, it doesn't mean anything. Hart was Middle Class but he was the Best Student in The Contracts Class.

Good storyline good movie worth it
TJ was so pathetic, okay Kleber gave him the brushoff but he was a reporter covering the assasination of the leader of the free world. He was still making his bones as a reporter, folks all over the world were devastated and stunned at his death.

When TJ's followers saw him on the floor with blood on his Body, I wondered where they more shocked after his being stabbed or for what he did to Sister Crystal/Laurie who was his most devoted disciple.
Wait so that was Laurie ? But why does she look exactly the same ????
These guys are such hypocrites. TJ is supposed to be a "Clean Living" Man but he doesn't have a problem with drinking and smoking.
All these 'mini-series' back then were sold under the pretense of a lifetime with a deep, dark secret, but everybody was figuring out what was going to happen from the get-go.
As soon as we saw the tragic singer, everyone watching knew it was the girl they had raped and thought had died.

I thought it was his wife that was out in the asylum. I’m watching it on my phone screen and couldn’t see her face well when she was singing. I did think the girl probably didn’t die but I didn’t put that together. I should have!
@@seaglasssparkles6910 they were all so convoluted with their little attempts at surprises, and everyone could see them coming, so the ratings got lower, then the next mini-series was shorter.
I don't think any of them managed to surprise anyone.
For the record, this one and Chiefs, which is also on youtube, were voted two of the worst miniseries back then.
Oddly enough, a miniseries about Pompeii aired opposite the second installment of V.
V beat Pompeii, but I actually enjoy Pompeii more. Didn't really care for V.
The problem with Pompeii, again, is you might as well scoot all the way to about the last forty minutes to see something. That's when the volcano finally erupted.

Whoever wrote this was channeling himself as 'the writer who would save the day'.
I don't even remember why they had to meet back at the cabin like that. It wasn't something that went on to affect anybody's life.
If they had been anywhere else and JT shot Mack like that, there would have been no reason to mention Laura at the trial, so then what?

Richard Fuller V had the benefit of having a built in audience from the prior year when the original V miniseries was a huge hit. My friends and I, we were kids, were split on whether to watch V or Pompeii but it was an easy choice for me because of how into V the original I was. V was fairly groundbreaking for a television miniseries at the time, especially given the state of science fiction special effects. P.S. the actor who plays the son in this miniseries was also in V. (the son when he is older. in the younger years he was played by River Phoenix).
On The US Soap Opera Guiding Light, Harlan Billy Lewis III aka "Little Billy" then "Little Bill" then plain old "Bill", talked to both of his Grandfathers as well as his Cousin Ben about what they wanted to do with their lives when they grew up. Bill becomes a successful Businessman working in The Town of Springfield where Cousin Ben kills himself.

@@glensobchyshyn7483 She was in shock that's why her body didn't move. Also remember in 1950 they didn't have the technology that they have now. DNA anyone. She probably was in therapy in a Institution, joined the Church but she "knew" who TJ was the whole time, she was biding her time.
@@laminage, No she didn't know who he was until the trial when he was on the witness stand. It triggered something in her memory that's why the camera zoomed in on her @ 1:17:31 as she was scrutinizing him. Dead giveaway if u ask me. Then that night when she awoke from a nightmare, pulled that newspaper out from underneath her mattress, who else could it be? However, in the novel, she was sitting next to the sketch artist in the courtroom watching him sketch depictions of the rape scene when her memory came back in full force and she did the deed.
I never thought of it that way. A similar storyline happened on Guiding Light in November 2006 where Olivia Spencer had a flashback and discovered that the man running for town mayor Jeffrey O'Neil was the same person who raped her when she was 16. He was passing himself off as a prince of a small principality. He was a modern day top ripley but he did take accountability for what he did. He was Prince Richard's Doppelganger.
I watched all three parts, a week ago, back to back. I've never seen/watched this before. All three of those guys had issues. Especially "T.J." The irony is, there are still a lot of people/"men" like those three male characters. A lot of people still don't like/want to grow up, wake up, learn, pay attention, nor care about/for each other. So-called christianity/religion is also/still another problem. There was a good reason why "Mack", especially, tried his best to stay away from "T.J." If friendship is real, and or lasts for years, it is extremely rare. Thank goodness I stopped having so-called friends.

So many Gay Men talked to Psychologists, and many of them was because they wanted to go straight. Donald in The Boys In The Band, Chester Weinberg Calvin Klein's former Mentor who died of Aids, and in other novels that I have read over the years. Some get help, others have their counselors stop working wth them because of their attitude.
Classic cheesey, made for t.v. drama. Not that entertaining. This series was really kinda dumb.

Maybe in the 80’s it was . I watched this in 1984 with my family I was 17 . Tried to watch it again. It’s terrible the whole movie could easily have been two hours.
No character development at all. Horrible acting. Predictable plot no surprises at all. Kinda like trying to watch Chiefs mini series again it just don’t work .
At least Mack paid the price for his sins 😁
