  • Ellis Island is a television miniseries, filmed in the United Kingdom, broadcast in three parts in 1984 on the CBS television network. The screenplay was co-written by Fred Mustard Stewart, adapted from his 1983 novel of the same title. The series tells the story of several immigrants from the late 19th century until the early 1910s, trying to achieve the American Dream and arriving on Ellis Island, hoping for a better life. Ellis Island highlighted numerous important events which occurred up to and during World War I, and many of the characters are based on real persons, such as Irving Berlin. The series marks the final appearance of Richard Burton.

My grandma came through Ellis Island, age 13, with her sister, 15, from a village in Romania; they traveled alone. (I'm sure they had a shirttail relative to stay with, but never knew the whole story.) She worked in a sweatshop, then married and had six kids. My mother and her sister were models in NYC before working in defense plants in WWII and then married servicemen. I had a passel of cousins from all those aunts and uncles. We actually found their immigration papers.

Gosh these were amazingly strong people who were forced to find new homes far away from there own. Hard to believe. I wish a written story could come out of that. The evil in this world is horrible. I hope your relatives knew and know peace. It looks like another round of corrupt govt is here now. ❤

Ben Vereen and Melba Moore Americans back in that day leaving because of Jim Crow many talented Black Americans left for Europe. France definitely was the spot.

Wow, very impactful for someone like me, whose ancestors did not come through Ellis Island, but over the Bering Strait Land Bridge many thousands of years ago. I decided to look up Ellis Island related subjects after constantly hearing about the immigration situation that is taking place on our southern border in Arizona.

I usually get around to reading replies to my uploads once or twice a year lol. I’m posting this from a different account until CZcams help me remember my login info for this channel. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was 8 when it premiered on CBS so I didn’t remember it at all. It was my introduction to Richard Burton via his narration on The War Of The Worlds album back in 1990 when I first heard it that lead to me to start collecting films, movie posters, books, etc. I remember the first biography I read was Melvyn Bragg’s ‘Richard Burton, A Life’ that was published just 2 years prior in 1988. If you haven’t read this one yet I highly recommend it. I think it’s the best of all the biographies though his brother wrote one as well that was very good.

Immaculate adaptation of the 1983 novel Ellis Island penned by Fred Mustard Stewart. Alternative title could have been The Golden Door. It offers loving context to the Emma Lazarus poem on the Statue of Liberty
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Forgive me, I really enjoyed this miniseries, but. But few actors can master an Irish accent, and the ladies who portrayed the sisters didn't. Milo O'Shea and Liam Neeson are Irish, and the lovely actresses tried. Maybe to American ears they sounded Irish, but to my ears they grated. Any Irish agree with me?
Sure an authentic Irish accent is gentle, despite the many brogues.

Just got to thinking; The late Will Rogers was approached from a lady bragging about her ancestors arriving on the Mayflower. will Rogers answered her with "Ancestors were there to meet them". By the way the Mayflower was not exactly a luxury liner with shuffleboard and entertainment. They even landed in the wrong place. They wanted to go to Virginia. Might even say there is some anti immigration among some Native Americans when they say " the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, too bad Plymouth Rock didn't land on the Pilgrims".

Thanks for posting a movie that depicts the background of immigrants before arriving in a country that was as divided as the ones they left. 2 of the main characters were criminals. One an accomplice to a crime & the other a murderer. This shows individuals who believed they had the right to do what ever they wanted. So it seems when ppl with their type of thinking met with the descendants of colonial puritizst ,conflict was bond to occur. Also, the rich had their doubt about the immigrants which still lingers today. When was this movie produced -2019?
