As the investigating police captain who swims against the tide of racism and rancor surrounding the case, Kris Kristofferson leads a notable cast that includes Jane Alexander, Sean Young, Jose Ferrer, James Saito, and Madeline Stowe.
The year is 1937, on the tropical island of Hawaii. A navy wife is brutally beaten and left lying naked on the beach. Her wealthy and influential mother (Jane Alexander) cannot face the truth of her daughter's tragedy, and so, four Hawaiian boys are accused. Police Captain Curt Maddox (Kris Kristofferson) is determined to solve the case. However, he doesn't take into account the racial tension which exists between the resident Americans and the Hawaiians. It takes a cynical manipulation of justice, a murder and the hidden menace of the islanders, to bring this tense and passionate drama to a shattering conclusion.

Based on a true story, but fiction, still will make your blood boil. Such a terrible tragedy and injustice. Some important statements are made in this movie along with the two I just watched "Hawaii (1966)" and "The Hawaiians". *I always though it was greed, not God, that lit way for us* I loved the Queen. "No good deed goes unpunished" I don't easily recognize Kris without a beard. Susan Blakely wasn't often a brunette. Wanted to see this movie for a while -- thanks!
YES THIS STORY IS BASED ON TRUE EVENTS. A FRIEND OF MINE, HIS GRANDFATHER WAS THE TERRIORIAL GOVERNOR OF HAWAII AT THE TIME. BASED ON THESE INCIDENTS, HIS GRANDFATHER CONVINCED FDR NOT TO INVOKE MARTIAL LAW!!!
THIS STORY GIVES SUBSTANCE TO THE HATERED BETWEEN THE WHITES AND HAWAIIANS. COULD EXPLAIN THE DISTANCE BETWEEN MY DAD (WHITE) AND MY UNCLE(HAWAIIAN/CHINESE). IT CAN ALSO EXPLAIN THE POLITICAL DIFFERENCED: WHITES MOSTLY REPUBLICANS AND THE COMMON FOLKS DEMOCRATS!

The silliest thing they did was to run. They should have stayed at the hospital and given their story. As for the silly woman. After what the creep did to her, I would have named him lock, stock and barrel! For goodness sake, shielding him when he treated her like old garbage was too stupid to be real. Allowing the men who saved her to take punishment. SHE needs to go to jail! Rape victims are not named either, so it must have been different in those days. Pity no DNA, they could have got the creep straight away.

This really demonstrates the horrible pattern Anglo European imposed on the original natives they ended up enslaving & abusing. 1st land on said land, trick the King/leader into thinking they are friendly, then betray them, abuse the people & take away their rights to the freedom & life. Oh & of course, some found love, lived as best they could and procreated. Then there's the other's, that took whomever they wanted & left a semblance of that horrid union. This is why many Natives ran to the hills & deep in the jungle, to TRY & live as they use to. 😢

Some of the men didn't want to get involved, fearing they might be blamed, because she was white, but do so anyway. Almost immediately everyone suspects they are to blame. When Hester's politically influential mother Doris finds out what really happened, she fearing a scandal, forces her daughter to blame the men who rescued her, of raping and beating her. It's up to detective Curt Maddox, to find out what really happened, and their Hawaiian lawyer to do the impossible. Convince a white court of law, that they are innocent.
