Mizuno Wave Rider 28: First Impressions Review
In this video I give my first thoughts on the MIZUNO WAVE RIDER 28. With all the exciting releases Mizuno have released in the past 2 years I thought I would finally come out of my Mizuno daily trainer retirement and give the 28 a go.

I have triangle feet so have been running Mizunos for years now. Went from the Inspire series (stability) to the Rider 27 start of this year and the toe box in that was narrower. These look wider to my eyes than the 27s definitely a plus for me and for folks with similarly wide forefeet.
Great review touches on all the critical stuff, was waiting to see what these were like!
One thing to add - as have been running Mizunos for so long now, they are built like utter tanks even after 500 miles they still look and run good.

Yeah I was on the inspires as my first Mizuno after doing a gait analysis. Then many years later after falling away from running I moved to the Riders thinking they looked and felt very very similar, I’m on my second pair of riders and although I love the feel my hobbit feet don’t (after 15k) and seemingly neither do my knees.
Going for another gait analysis but I fear this will be my last pair of riders which is a shame because they are lighter than the current inception of Inspires.

I have had mizuno for 5 seasons now and for my trail shoe. I find the don't get to old, does wear out. I get a new pair each year when the new seasons edition comes out. I think I want to go to wave rider 28 for training runs and the rebellion pro for racing, or when i was a faster shoe with bounce. I think they wouldn't normally have a lot of bounce, what he's talking about in review. They are overall a solid shoe. There's not much to complain about even when they get a year old. I have a narrow foot, so I'm interested in checking out what is mentioned about the top not being too tight. I would just switch it to a casual gym or walking shoe after running qith them for 6months to a year. Excited to try the. New 28 shoe. As I find keeping up to date with the new seasons shoe is needed. I normally find as they get older they do start to slip on the Limestone tracks. But ok in rain ,for sure. Thanks for the review!!!

I'm a huge Mizuno's Wave Rider fan since the 25th edition and I did my Tuesday long run with the Wave Rider 27. It is my favorite daily trainer between shoes like the Pegasus, Gel-Cumulus, Velocity Nitro or Cloud Stratus.
I can't wait to try the new Wave Rider and the only doubt I got is if I should go with the basic model or the one with the version with the Smooth Stretch Woven upper.

Do they usually have a break in period or am I just a bit sensitive to the ride?

@@run-are not for me. From the WR 25 to the WR 27 they were all ready to go out of the box, but these shoes soften up a bit after a few kilometers. Depending the shoes I heel strike ( low drop ) or middle foot strikes when the drop is 10mm to 12mm. I normally run with a high cadence even when I'm running slow ( like 6:30 per kilometer) so the Wave Rider high drop and Wave plate works marvelous to my style of running. And with the high drop I lean my hips forward and it just works.
The only WR that was not super awesome was the #26, it was a bit too soft in the Enerzy and too soft in the outsole. That made the shoes not last as long as the 27 and it was a bit slow running and less versatile. But with a more rigid outsole again, it is super fast and durable and still a lot softer them a Velocity Nitro 3 or Pegasus 40 for example.
I hope that the WR 28 is not going back to the style of the 26 with too much cushioning.... for that we go with a Wave Sky, Gel-Nimbus or some thing else that was made to be extremely soft and comfortable.

As I mentioned in another comment mine took at least 50km, where I felt it the most was the Achilles and calves, I’m a heel striker, slightly on the outside but always used a neutral with high drop. Now I’m at around 180km and gliding in them and no issues with the cushioning. Personally not as responsive as the 21s which I had previously but still a great daily shoe especially in the heat and running up to 21km, haven’t gone further than that yet. I do find they work better at slightly faster paces for me, upwards of 5:30/km and anything below that they are a bit sloppy, my brooks ghost 15 feel better at those super slow paces down to 6:30/km.

Wave Riders really come into their own once they are broken in - big fan of Wave Riders here

Definitely a shoe that would feel better if you typically run in a Brooks Ghost, Nike Pegasus, or other traditional everyday trainer. Usually takes about 1 run to ‘break in’ or get used to the wave plate force absorption with your foot strike. I’ve liked it for everyday miles and walks, folks tend to like it in the gym as well.

Mizuno usually need to break in period. Even my current daily driver for faster pace: Rebellion Sonic need about 50km to make the shoes more lively.

Yeah same thing happened to me with my 27s, I alternate with a brand new pair of brooks ghost 15 and the difference in cushioning was huge. I couldn’t say how long it took before they softened up and became a bit more responsive but must have been well over 50km.

I’m planning to buy this shoes and my size is US 11.5, how is the length, is it longer than the standard sizes? Do you recommend me to stick to my size? Or half size down?

I have these in wide and they actually too wide. Better off going true to size vs the 2E model. My last pair was the 25 and they were a true 2E vs these run extra wide.

Shame about the ride, as the shoe looks great. Neo Vista it is for me then as a daily trainer.
