    The Manx Missile, a living legend, all heart and guts. Thanks for the wonderful sprints and battling spirit to break the record of stage wins. Time for the next stage of your life, enjoy more time with the family and do the odd public talk once or twice a year - if you want to, of course. You'll always have people who want to come and see you. You're not just a bike racer, you're a great example of how a man on a mission can make their dreams come true.

    I got to shout "You're a bloody legend Cav" to him in Villeneuve-sur-Lot last week as he climbed into the team bus. He was a bit pissed off that day so I'm not sure he heard me .... but I told him anyway, because he is.
    When you see what it means to a rider to win just one stage, then you try to comprehend winning 35 stages, especially as a Sprinter, when so much can go wrong in those final 500 metres (and did very often). Incredible.

    I am old enough to remember the great trailblazers for British cycle racing on the
    Continent - Brian Robinson, Shay Elliott et al., and this top man is the very worthy
    result of their own courageous grit back when cycle racing was a Cinderella
    sport. He fully deserves our admiration and appreciation. Well done, Sir Mark!

      @@lindsayrogers6690 Thanks. Among the et al of my comment was
      Barry Hoban - another fine rider who rode the roads of the Continent
      back in the day when the likes of Jacques Anquetil and Raymond
      Poulidor graced the sport. And JB Wadley did sterling service in
      bringing their exploits to our attention in his magazine "Sporting
      Cyclist" - in glorious black and white photos, of course! Fascinating
      to recall that my own teenage bike was an "all British" product - a
      Raleigh Super Lenton Sports, with items from Cyclo=Benelux, Dunlop,
      GB, Brooks, Williams and Racelite to send me up Bowden Hill overlooking
      Lacock in Wiltshire (now a recognised hill climb, I believe), Happy days!

    It's funny to see the uniformly positive outpouring for this guy who won a lot of races through intimidation tactics. Still, it's impressive what he accomplished, not being the biggest or quickest. Most sprinters lose their nerve even before they lose their speed--a couple of bad crashes or having children makes them less aggressive. That never happened to Cavendish.

    Pogi will smash Cav's win total at the TdF in half the time it took him to do it.

    • @davemoss6976
      @davemoss6976 Před měsícem +8

      That is so disrespectful, and nonsense. Pogi is an amazing rider for sure, but for him winning is straightforward, He just has to be the best on the big climbs and he wins. if he had to take the risks, find and fight for the gaps in order to win a sprint stage he would find it a lot more difficult. For Cav to achieve that total he has not just needed to be the fastest in a sprint, but has had to use all his skill and knowledge to still win when faster younger ones come along. All it needs for Pogi to stop winning is for someone else to appear in the next few years, and they probably will, then Pogi will find winning a stage very hard.

      @@torp7215 I am not a Pogi fan boy. To the contrary. As an American Jew, I can not route for any cyclist who rides for an Arab-sponsored team and accepts their blood money.

      @@davemoss6976 Pogi is 25 and he has 17 stage victories at the TdF. Unless he completely falls apart, you can not tell me that he can not get other 19-stage victories within the next 10 to 12 years? Cyclists like Cavendish make a mockery of the sport by finishing almost 6.30 hours behind the winner and strolling through the final TT. I think he purposely wanted to win the Lanterne Rouge for being the worst rider in the tour

    • @davemoss6976
      @davemoss6976 Před měsícem

      @@davidjones5547 Pogi is in a good position to possibly achieve 36 stage wins or more, but it's far from certain. But if he does it would in no way diminish Cav's achievement, that's why your post is disrespectful.
      Do all the teammates of the GC contenders make a mockery of the sport because they sacrifice their own GC position for the team leader? Anyone who can win a sprint stage in the first week and beat the elimination time in the mountains is hero in my book.

    • @yeokat7802

      @@davidjones5547i think you need to learn a bit more about cycling and grand tours. I don’t think he will do it easily but there is a chance tp will over take cav, even cav acknowledged that but it is dependant on so many variables. routes, teams, fitness and desire. One of cav’s difference is he still loves it. Tp may stop in two years having won everything.
