      The force awakens was bad,,, not the turd that was episode I, but sadly the Force Awakens was a terrible wasted opportunity.. it played it safe, served the fans, and had a terribly written cloned story of a New Hope.

    Just watching A New Hope, and I realized that Jyn and Cassian having to "upload" the file to the fleet actually fits better with the story in A New Hope because at the beginning of Ep. 4 when Vader is choking that dude on the Rebel ship, he asks "Where are the transmissions you intercepted? What have you done with those plans?" So yeah, George Lucas meant for the Death Star plans to have been transmitted wirelessly at some point, and Rogue One nailed it.

    • @My-Name-Isnt-Important
      @My-Name-Isnt-Important Před 7 lety +2

      Intercepted, meaning from an Imperial sender to Imperial receiver, but the Tantive IV got the message instead of the Imperial receiver. Also, in A New Hope its pretty ambiguous and Vader only knew they received the transmission, not who had the plans or what Leia was really up to. From the ending of Rogue One, the Tantive IV is clearly seen jumping to hyperspace fleeing Vader's arrival, so they knew exactly who has the plans and that all on board are apart of the Rebel Alliance. So there would be no point in boarding the ship, they could just destroy it to keep the plans from falling into Rebel hands.

    • @alexperaza9475
      @alexperaza9475 Před 7 lety +8

      I agree with your second point, but I think you're being a bit pedantic about the word "intercepted". Jyn and Cassian simply sent out the transmission blind with no actual receiver in mind. So anyone who received it can be said to have "intercepted" it.
      In any case, my point was more that the files were transmitted wirelessly at all according to Ep. 4 since Kevin was acting like Rogue One was going out of its way to appeal to kids or something by having them "upload" the file.

    • @gl0bal7474
      @gl0bal7474 Před 7 lety +3

      you are correct.

    • @BryonLape
      @BryonLape Před 7 lety +4

      Yep. Continuity be damned. It is also evident in the original film that Vader has been tracking down leads and interrogating prisons to develop a link between Leia and the Alliance. That is how he knows where to intercept her on her "diplomatic mission".

    • @alexperaza9475
      @alexperaza9475 Před 7 lety +9

      Bryon Lape Not sure how evident any of that is from A New Hope. We may have assumed it, but the movie doesn't explicitly say how Vader found the Tantive IV.
      Also, at the end of Rogue One, Vader is just standing there as the Tantive IV goes to lightspeed. He still has to return to the Devastator before they can even give chase. It could have been days before they finally track them down. He also never saw Leia on the ship or even know the name of her ship, and the Rebels presumably have multiple ships of the same type, so their insistence that they have nothing to do with the stolen plans works as a sort of desperate, last-second attempt to get away. It's obviously futile, but why wouldn't they try lying to Vader?
      There's enough wiggle room there that the continuity works.

      @JeffDietzphoto Před 7 lety +1

      If you are really comparing those two things, you just don't get it. As with most of this storyline it was stupid, lame, and forgettable. Vader's scenes actually added to the pitiful storyline of yet another story about the damn death star. Vader's scene of kicking ass in the hallway ties it back to the beginning of of episode 4, where the Leia scene, we never really needed to see it. Was just a way to throw in their little CGI face replacement technology.
      The scene of Vader in the tank might have been the most interesting of the entire movie and we only got a glimpse of it. After all, how could we spend any time on that, or any character development and take away from the non ending 2hours and 10 mins of non stop action and stuff blowing up?
      This was basically Independence Day: Resurgence, but with a massively better cast of actors.

    A lot of reviewers say the characterization was lacking in Rogue One. Bullshit. The entire Rogue crew was amazing. The chemistry between them all was top notch especially between Cassian and Jyn...and no it is not any romantic crap. But rather two people with very different view points finding common ground. The other members have smaller roles but it works because they are instantly likeable anyways. This is ultimately a plot driven movie and rightly it should be. We don't need to know how Blase and Chirrut became friends. They were a great duo. Kinda a bad ass Odd Couple. But in the end the movie is about the death star plans. Besides it is only a matter of time before they make supplemental material for the movie. I definitely would not mind a Cassian comic book. Or a Bodhi novelization. These characters were exactly what they needed to be. And if you are worried about SJWs and feminazi writing? Don't. Every character is critical and very humanized. If only Gareth Edwards did the sequel trilogy. Rian Johnson is gonna have to create a miracle out of the mess JJ Abrams left him with. Rogue One rules.

    • @iansmart4158
      @iansmart4158 Před 7 lety +3

      Who is Jyn, Cassion, or Bodhi? This is a legitimate question not trying to be difficult. I don't understand who they are and why they make the choices they make. I liked the movie, but I think the characters are lacking.

    • @mrsticky005
      @mrsticky005 Před 7 lety

      Ian Smart Jyn was the daughter of the man who built the death star weapon. Cassion was a rebel who dirty his hands for the cause. Bodhi was an imperial pilot who defected. Jyn's motive is her love for her father. Bodhi acts out of desire to do right. Cassion is filled with shame and regret and wants his life to mean something. We know a good bit of these characters actually.

    • @iansmart4158
      @iansmart4158 Před 7 lety +2

      Lance Smith No i got you. It's not that I don't understand why on the surface they do what they do. It's like underlying things we never get a grasp on. I wish I could learn more about How conflicted Bodhi might have felt about defecting but how Galen's words really resonated. I didn't completely get why Jyn was so turned around to be on the rebellion's side by the end which is kind of sudden to me and maybe a little bit of background on Cassion and what he felt about the rebellion vs the empire (since both seem to do questionable things) just to get at some kind of deeper meaning about how both sides can be corrupt depending on perspective.
      Sorry, I didn't mean to create waves. I liked the movie, and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. Good to have star wars in with multicultural leads really.

    • @mrsticky005
      @mrsticky005 Před 7 lety +1

      Ian Smart I want to know more about the characters too. But I think it would be better to have that kind of heavy characterization in a novel or comic book rather than the movie.
      I don't really care about how diverse the cast is. Their skin color or ethnicity was never that important to me because they were fascinating characters portrayed by a very talented cast. The only time race should ever matter in a movie is when portraying actual people. Like honestly I cannot stand those people who complain about the main lead being a girl. Like why give a fuck? A good character is a good character. I didn't think Finn was awful because he was black. I just didnt like his character. It's like seriously we are all just people.

    • @Bushwookie_18
      @Bushwookie_18 Před 7 lety

      I did read the book Catalyst before going to watch the movie and it laid great groundwork for Galen Erso and gave his character depth. you know going into the movie his relationship with Krennick. But that is about it..
      From what Saw was saying in the movie he raised Jyn from the time Galen was taken until she was 16. I think it would have been great to know about those years. That would've at least given us more depth on the lead character.
      I agree with mrsticky. Having some comics or novels come out with background on those characters would be perfect. I can understand they wanted to keep the plot line/characters mostly under wraps but now that the movie is out it would be perfect to build upon the members in Rogue One.
      I think Chirrut (blind badass) would have an extremely interesting backstory personally.

    Just saw Rogue One. This was the quality of film I had hoped Force Awaken would have been but ultimately was not. Rogue One is right up there with the best Star Wars films ever in the series. I think the reason it came off so well is because it actually is it's own film without relying on cliches of the past films. No repackaging, just a story set in the Star Wars universe well done and oh so fresh. You actually cared about the characters. K-2SO is a good representation of the approach of this film, not assuming you should like something because it was in previous films or is cute and will sell a lot of toys but rather an original approach where you like it for it's own uniqueness and merits. My only complaint of Rogue One is near the end you get the cliche' bad guy monologue instead of just shooting which of course gives the good guys chance to kill the bad guy, blah, blah, we've seen it a thousand times before and it still makes no sense. At any rate thumbs up on Rogue One. J.J. Abrams should not be allowed to touch another Star Wars film (or Star Trek film) and just do what he's good at, braindead action films.

      I'm not too hard on Force awakens because it ultimately showed everyone that Disney could do a Star Wars movie, right the wrongs of the prequels, and at the same time, bring in new people to the franchise. It was a good introduction to the new Star wars universe under Disney. It was very successful in what it was trying to accomplish. Rogue one shows just how dark they are willing to go. Both films had its flaws, but both films show how committed Disney is to making great Star wars movies. I was worried at first when I heard Disney was buying the Star Wars franchise. Now i'm stoked as hell to see future installments of this new Disney acquisition.

      Honestly I don't think Disney proved they can do a Star Wars film. They proved the can copy a Star Wars film(s) and add enough new elements to sell it as a new film. Rogue One is on a completely different level than Force Awakens. Its like the difference between making money being the focus of a movie and artistic expression being the focus of a movie.

      maybe you needed to hear some people justifying this hugely flawed movie to point of you bactually believing it was that good. It was no where close to empire and, the story lacked, there where no memorable characters, every emotional scene just fell flat and everything else was just fan service. It was an okay movie, but nowhere as good as these two claim it to be. Kevin Smith can't be trusted when it comes to reviews, especially star wars related reviews.

    Here's my take on the whole "Force Awakens vs Rogue One" argument: If you remove Han Solo and Chewbacca from The Force Awakens, you would be left with a movie that's really not worth revisiting. Remove a few characters from Rogue One and you still have a pretty solid film worth revisiting. Rogue One > Force Awakens

    • @RighteousBrother

      @sirmarshall9521 Před 7 lety +6

      Force Awakens may have touched on familiar themes but it still had good characters. Force Awakens is a saga film. R1 is an anthology film. Despite them both being in the SW universe you can't really compare them because they serve vastly different elements of the canon. Both of these films did their one job.

    • @tommy1138
      @tommy1138 Před 7 lety +6

      For me at least, Han and Chewbacca were the highlights of Force Awakens. Finn and Rey were entertaining but Harrison Ford was the star imo. Finn was comic relief but his character made no sense. He's a pacifist Stormtrooper who worked in maintenance but he can take on skilled warriors in combat and screams with joy when he opens fire on a bridge full of his own Imperial comrades? Huh?

    • @Tom-wp7gg
      @Tom-wp7gg Před 7 lety +2

      Nah. The lead of TFA actually has character development, you get invested in Rey and her plight and adventures and care what happens to her. She makes TFA and of course the little cameos here and there are nice fan service but without them, it's still a good film with a strong lead. FA has zero character who have any development and are basically there like horror movie victims...simply lined up to be slaughtered.

    Spoilers, obviously, if you're on this video, you should have already seen the film:
    -I am really glad I read Catalyst before seeing the film, because Lyra's death at the start hit really hard due to it.
    -The CGI Tarkin and Leia were phenomenal, and also K2SO looked real to me.
    -I thought all the main characters were going to die, but I was still so shocked when it actually happened.
    -Vader's scene at the end was great.
    -Was that Vader's castle that was going to be in the original trilogy that we saw?
    -Bail Organa going home to Alredraan, though.
    -Did Marc keep saying Saul Guerrero?

      Just a few points related to your post.
      - I loved both Vader scenes, and yes, I think that was the castle that was in Lucas' original story treatment of "The Star Wars."
      - There were so many amazing planets and environments, and it all felt so real. CGI has come a long way, even since EP3. On that note...
      - The CGI faces were amazing in my opinion. My mom didn't even know who Tarkin was, and was surprised when I told her he was CGI.
      - The Leia scene caught me off guard and was amazing. A lot of people online are complaining that she and Tarkin looked bad, but I thought they looked incredible.
      I like to compare this movie to Halo Reach. A small band of fighters sacrifice themselves so the Heroes can carry on saving the day in the next installment. Reach was the direct prequel to Halo 1. Rogue One was the direct prequel to Star Wars.
      Love this story and the way everything was handled. It might be my favorite Star Wars movie ever. Certainly top 3.

    • @sertaki
      @sertaki Před 7 lety +4

      If they did an adaptation of the new Vader comic books from Marvel .... OMG that would be amazing.
      This wouldn't be two straight hours of slaughter, the comics follow Vader in trying to regain his master's respect after the failure at Yavin. He goes full into conspiracy/manipulation mode, trying to play the empire like his fiddle to get back into power.
      Forging shaky alliances with criminals, fucking robbing the empire to fund his own power grab and all the while trying to outmaneuver a Sherlock-level genius investigator.
      I would frickin love this to pieces, that comic is glorious.
      We were told in the Prequels that Anakin was not only powerful, but also rather smart. But Lucas never showed it. Would be a great way to redeem the guy.
      But "The Purge: Last Stand of the Jedi" would also work, with some Jedi trying to escape from Vader (maybe even fight him9 and all dying in a bloody mess. They could even throw in cameos by Ahsoka and Quinlan Vos or characters from the Dark Times comic, like they snuck in references to Rebels in here.

    • @ctsteelers97
      @ctsteelers97 Před 7 lety

      sertaki I agree with you the Vader comic is great but we've had like 2 trilogies that had Darth Vader as the main character. I would rather they make standalone's of characters that didn't get very much attention

      Unfortunately no. Vader wouldn't work in a solo movie. Vader isn't in Episode 4 for more than 15 to 20 minutes at best. Empire & Jedi slightly longer but again barely 20 minutes at the most he's there but as an ominous presence at the most in the sequel films of the original trilogy.
      Unless its; videogames, comic books or novels. Vader works best in smaller doses. sad but true. Too much Vader is a bad thing! The old saying goes; you can't have too much of a good thing!

    So if Jyn Erso's father built in a weakness to the 1st death star, who built in the weakness to the 2nd one?

      Mario U Wasn't it just because the 2nd DS was still under construction, that they were able to destroy it? (I don't know just trying to solve it lol)

      Mario U 2nd one didn't have a weakness per say. It's more that it was only half built and the path to the reactor was a lot more difficult and dangerous.

      exactly right. The second one wasn't finished.

      You know which one was finished the 3rd death star planet. And it still had a stupid weakness that was able to be taken down by 12 fighters. At least this movie explained the reason for the stupid weakness for the 1st death star.

      Kevin There's no reasonable expectation that something should be invincible. There is nothing that can be built right now that cannot also be destroyed. Why would the Star Wars universe be any different?
      The only reasonable expectation is that the empire would never build something twice with the same weakness.

    "Luke, here is your father's lightsaber. He once used it to slaughter a temple of children and a village of sand people. I brought it with me after cutting his legs off and leaving him to burn alive on a volcano planet while I took your mother away in a spaceship. He was a good friend."

    Actually, they brought in Angus MacInnes (Gold Leader) to record some additional lines for the movie. (Drewe Henley, who played Red Leader, passed away early in 2016).

    As a kid I was terrified of Vader
    That last scene of Vader made me as an adult think how terrifying he is

    i'm finally getting around to watching this and i have this say: rogue one really lends itself towards multiple rewatches. characters that seem kinda one dimensional or simple become more complex when you go back and watch again, with little micro expressions and realizations. even baze, when you realize he was a guardian just like chirrut before he lost his faith, AND he apparently practiced a little differently, since he said "may the force OF OTHERS be with you" instead of the traditional "may the force be with you." that actually says a whole lot about the splintering off of this ancient religion, just like religions in the real world are practiced differently (just take a look at all the different factions of christianity), and that fascinates me, these unspoken details

    I've seen so many "reviewers" of late who went the jaded, cynic, and non-conformist route, that it's always refreshing to hear Kev review something. Even when he finds a few things wrong with whatever he's reviewing, he's so excited, so stoked that we're actually getting all this amazing content almost every fucking month. It just gives back some energy, some "childhood", that is basically what we look forward to get from these films.
    This guy gets me pumped about the future of movies, and so fucking happy to be so lucky to live in this age the entertainment is going through.
    Kudos on that, Fatman.
    P.S.: And Marc keeps making me feel like an idiot with the way he just gets EVERY BIT of a movie I didn't even notice. God damn writer super-mind.
