Batman Forever was awesome for its time. I remember seeing it in theaters for this kids birthday party and everyone was going apeshit during the opening scene.
Kev is so right-on. Batman refers to him as Two Face when he's talking about him, but he calls him Harvey when he's talking to him, it adds a little personal touch because they have history. Batman usually never refers to his villains by their stage names when he's talking directly to them, except for those who lack a birth name like Joker and Bane.
@Chris Seymouryeah but Bruce and Jack didn't know each other beforehand. The original comment is talking about the history the characters have, Jack and Bruce, don't have any.
I used to think that but I think he’s referring to the guy he’s telling the story about,as an audience we know they’re the same though. I think he’s saying “let me tell you about this guy I know...Jack” as in the guy he’s referring to. I could be wrong
I think that's the idea though. I enjoy these movies because I was a kid when they came out. I didn't care about plot or acting. I just enjoyed seeing Batman and Robin. If I had been an adult when these came out I definitely would have criticized them the same way they are. But as a kid I didnt take them that serious.
I liked it alot more as a kid but even now it still has its charm. Batman and robin is the one i cant tolerate watching, the mr freeze puns are the one thing i do like
I don't know it for fact, but being in my 20s when the Schumacher ones came out, the campy colors and all didn't bother me or my friends of the same age, and it didn't seem to bother little kids. But I suspect the ones who really hated it were teenagers at the time who felt like it was some step backward from the more mature Phantasm movie and BTAS of the previous few years, and who believed bashing the Adam West TV show was an essential rite of passage.
@@75aces97 I'd be 11 when this came out, I didn't see it in theaters back then. I do recall them re-relasing the Seal song for it, which the kids now think was made for the film. But you are correct after BTAS the only way forward was Nolan or the Batman stuff. Plus Riddler and Two Face were so much better in BTAS and I would have rather have had that over Carey, at his peak, being Carey does Frank Groschen. All they had to do was slow the films down and just do Two Face from the animated series or Riddler as the actual intellectual threat to Batman. But hey Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore probably at their peaks of hotness in this film.
+Emperor Psycho what dicks studios executives were. and i can say the same thing to the parents who bitched about batman returns being too dark and violent. did they even see the first movie? that movie wasn't all rainbows and unicorns either
+Jason Rameriz This movie was deliberately trying to bring the corny 60s Adam West Batman into a big budget action movie. It did not work. Ho boy did it not work.
One thing that I hadn't noticed before was how Bruce looked at that malysian doll, which was half black half white, kinda' like Two-Face. That's was actually pretty cool moment and you could see the regret in his eyes. Something I didn't expect in this film.
The thing that gets me is at the time I thought all of those early Batman movies were the same universe. Different directors and different actors in the leads ,but same universe. Fast forward to today, the Flash movie changes that.
When they came out they WERE the same universe. Nobody was thinking about multiverse stuff. It's the same as Sean Connery in Dr. No and Roger Moore in Moonraker being the "same" James Bond..
Kevin's beast point is Robin not being a kid, him being a full grown man just kills everything that would give it pathos, just makes it kind of awkward.
Yeah everybody talk shit I saw the movie when I was a kid in theaters and I loved it. And I still love her to this day when I’m 30 I think it was a Unique. Val Kilmer was a decent Batman, riddler was a little to joker. And it beat the hell out of Batman and robin.
That chase meridian sex scene with her bush shaved like a bat symbol and batman leaving the cowl and cape on is a fantasy we've all imagined, let's admit it.
As a big fan of Kevin Smith, Batman, AND Mystery Science Theater 3000...this was just incredible! Thank you both so much for doing this, guys! Definitely going back to watch the first two commentaries soon. This was great.
20:16 “Yeah he did-he [Joel Schumacher] was not a comic book guy.” That’s actually such a misconception, Joel Schumacher actually WAS a huge Batman fan, more than Tim Burton, and he came on the project with the intent of carrying on the dark, gothic, Deco-Noire style of Tim Burton’s first two films. However Warner Bros. was still unwinding from the backlash of Batman Returns and made Schumacher make the film lighter and friendlier. Schumacher had also wanted to make a Batman: Year One film, but was shelved after the reception of Batman & Robin.
I have a lot of fond memories with this movie. I find it funny how Im listening to this as Im watching it. But, like I said, I have a lot of memories with this movie.
Fun fact: Val Kilmer did not get along well with Joel Schumacher (for reasons more to do with the studio and producers), but it was Jim Carry & Tommy Lee Jones had real animosity with each other nearly all the whole shooting schedule (it has been mentioned on other commentaries).
Tommy Lee Jones was bitter that his lame oscar bait movie about Ty Cobb completely flopped while Jim Carrey was fresh of 3 back to back to back blockbuster hits.
