    I would say that the reason Selina has the neon "hello there" sign is because 1. Shes lonely and it welcomes her everyday when she gets in from work. 2. Theres something a little sleazy about neon, so it's a nice little detail because it hints at something darker to her character that hasn't yet manifested.

    • @winterwolfryan
      @winterwolfryan Před 4 lety +11

      Yes, exactly. Also, did you notice the sign was essentially in view of a window? So to me, she is saying hello there to whoever looks through that window, thus emphasizing her loneliness and her want to connect to others. I thought that was a brilliant touch.

      This at least probably has the best looking Catwoman that actually uses a whip and the Penguin is still using umbrella weapons. If he were still around maybe he would've found himself landing a role in The Batman, perhaps even as the Penguin (although Colin Farrell did a fantastic job portraying him as an old school mobster--possibly my favorite incarnation of the Penguin yet). To think of all the wonderful performances we've been robbed of with his passing just continues to break my heart. At least his legacy will live on though, and imo his son Cooper already seems to have some of the same chops after seeing his debut role in Licorice Pizza.

    • @eirikwegga
      @eirikwegga Před 9 lety +3

      It's about a Penguin who has basically nothing in common with the comic book character beyond the name though. Secondly it's about Catwoman, who also bears little resemblance to the original character and has been given a really inexplicable origin. So Batman/Bruce Wayne is basically third banana in his own movie, and has to share that spot with Max Schreck.
      I also think it works for what it is though, a weird Burton fantasy movie about freaks only barely disguised as a Batman movie.

    • @HipsterBlood
      @HipsterBlood Před 9 lety

      Eirik W There's no original character when it comes to Catwoman. The inspiration came from the Miller years, along with the graphic novel "Her Sister's Keeper." The Penguin never had a back story. Batman has gone through a million incarnations. There's no official version. Nearly every scene from "Returns" comes from the comic books. Check out Batman Online. Google "Comic Influences On Batman Returns (1992)". It's 8 pages, scene by scene. Google "From Comic To Pfeiffer's Cat" as well.

    • @eirikwegga
      @eirikwegga Před 9 lety

      HipsterBlood The Penguin certainly wasn't a grotesque deformed sewer freak in the comics though. Making up an origin for a character that doesn't have one is fine, but if you're changing almost everything we did know about him as well you're better off just making up a new character or going with another established villain (and Batman has such a famously excellent rogues gallery). They kept the name, shortness, suit and umbrella and that's literally it. Not enough in my book.
      My big problem with the Catwoman origin is that it made no sense even for a movie that doesn't go for realism (which is fine). What the hell happened to her? She fell to her death, was licked by a bunch of cats and came back to life with superpowers. Huh? It's just baffling.

    Batman Returns is the only true film adaptation of Batman where one artists aesthetic works in synthesis to the source material to create something truly unique and amazing, which is the reason why it's my favourite Batman movie of the eight released as of 2022. For those saying Batman Returns wasn't close to comics are missing the whole point of what a true adaptation should be, which is creating your vision rather then somebody else's vision of what Batman and the Gotham City world should be. Lastly the actual creators of the Batman mythology, Bob Kane and even more so Bill Finger both stopped working on Batman by 1964 so everything after that was just someone else's take of their original vision for Batman.

    • @dreamlandnightmare
      @dreamlandnightmare Před 8 měsíci

      There's a difference between creating your own vision of the source material and totally abandoning the spirit of the source material. The Nolan trilogy is his distinct vision of Batman, but it still stays true to the spirit of Batman. This is just a Tim Burton movie that happens to feature Batman characters.

      @@dreamlandnightmareMy original post just went over your head swoosh and "stays true to the spirit of Batman" 😀you literally don't know what you're talking about if you think that. Try reading some of the early Batman comics and the Burton films are far closer to the spirit of those them plus he had the actual creator of Batman on set and gained his approval. The Nolan Trilogy has zilch to do with the origins of batman and were just a James Bond film mixed with a Michael Mann film to create a very polished but rather soulless films.

Always trying to make evil people normal everyday schlubs, always taking these weird shots at normal society and portraying them in some ultra weird John Waters-esque light, and of course clearly hating the source material not because it needed to get more realistic but because it wasn't freaky enough.
      These two films created BTAS but they are also why BTAS beats them into the ground because BTAS was basically a realistic Batman in a dark deco world.

    3. *The Dark Knight* (I like the attempt to make a mature, thoughtful take on the superhero genre; but the story doesn't quite grab me like the first Nolan movie)
    4. *Batman* '89(I like the Joker and the production design, but it's a little clunky in action and storytelling)
    5. *The Dark Knight Rises* (some nice elements, but the storytelling is rushed, cluttered and frustrating)
    6. *Batman and Robin* (I enjoy the awfulness of absolutely everything in this - it's hilarious)
    7. *Batman* '66 (I'm fond of the goofiness of the show, but it works best in 25 minute installments)
    8. *Batman Forever* (less enjoyable than Batman and Robin because it's an unsatisfying mix of some good things and lots of campy awful things)

      Ryan Kirk Claiming that Batman and Batman Returns are not Batman movies is nonsense. Batman's not speaking much and making big speeches and spouting one-liners because Tim Burton and Micheal Keaton wanted to keep Batman mysterious and eerily silent. Batman Returns writer Daniel Waters said "He's the only actor I know who would go through my script that goes 'I should say less here, I should say less here.' I had so many angry Batman rant speeches and he's like, 'Batman would never say that. Batman should just say this line right here.'" Batman was created in 1939 as a mysterious character modeled after the Shadow. Tim Burton also stayed true to the basic iconic looks of the characters and embraced the fantastical, surreal expressionistic nature of Batman, Joker, etc. with it's roots in German expressionist Gothic horror films like The Man Who Laughs, The Bat, and the Shadow pulps which has it's roots in Dracula. German expressionism/horror movie elements and noir are part of Batman material. He's using elements that are part of the material while making Batman movies.

The Penguin in the cemetery with his parents graves? Penguin using a campaign button to fondle the breast of adoring young Volunteer Bimbo? Penguin kidnapping and causing the death of a woman? Catwoman with lots of BDSM PVC fetish inspired kink content? The Penguin's Red Triangle Circus Gang kidnapping crying children to murder in toxic waste? The Penguin using penguins in an attempt to murder 100,000 people though sonics affecting the penguins brains by head-gear using a pitch and frequency that cause penguins to follow his every command to bomb a city? Where is anything like that in Joel Schumacher's version of Batman with Schumacher's homoeroticism for male nipples and man ass?

    Ok, so when you break a neon light, it releases the gas inside. No more light. Not letter by letter, no more light.

    Anybody know where/how to get that image of Catwoman staring at the bat signal?.... Would be a good wallpaper.
