    Me personally, I loved this film. The vistas were great. The action and the vistas. The new AT-ACTs really expanded the Star Wars mythos, too.

      If only the prequels had those AT-AT walkers and X-Wings. The authentic Star Wars tech was the missing piece along with the vistas and the dark tone of the picture. Well done, Disney.

    Rogue One really exceeded my expectations. I wanted Lucasfilm to really take a chance with this film and give us the grittiest and most real depiction of war the franchise had ever gone, and they pulled it off. They took a huge risk and I loved how well they handled it. This felt like something truly unique and I grew to really like all the characters, especially Chirrut and K2SO. The special effects were breathtaking and I personally thought they handled CGI Tarkin and Leia extremely well. The final battle might very well be my favorite in the franchise, as it just escalated into full blown war as it progressed and truly felt epic in scale. I also felt they handled the transition into A New Hope very well.
    Also, that final Vader scene was possibly the most satisfying and badass moment in the franchise. That scene was perfect.

      btafbm neither was the scene where she's at the top of the tower and the tie fighter shows up right there. Or the scene where saw says what will you become, and many many others. Shit there was a ton of scenes from the trailers that weren't in the movie. I liked that because it was almost all new once we got to the movie.

      I think based on the original trailers Rogue One was going to be a undercover mission sent by the Rebels to steal the plans. The running on the beach with the hard drive in hand was from that version. Then they decided to change the story and have the mission be unauthorized and under the table. Events were reworked to make the Rouge One crew more rebel than the rebels and steal the plans without orders to do so.

This is *Darth Vader* we're talking about. Remember in Empire when Vader is at the dining table and says "We would be honored if you would join us." its the same thing!
    And about the Rebel meeting I liked they gave up. That was the point. The Death Star is here now. There is *no hope* and that leads into A New Hope.

      But Jyn did rally quite a few who all decided to go off on their own which then gets everyone else to realize oh damn, that girl was right and we need to help these people.

I would've been fine with the Leia cameo but Tarkin was just in the movie too much. I was thinking about whether or not CGI was believable instead of paying attention to what he was saying. Glad it didn't take you out of those scenes though!

      Gabe Randall I disagree about tarkins CGI. It felt fake and rubbery. If you were to look at an older person and look at their skin and watch the muscles. This CGI had him talking but none of his upper lip or cheeks moving at points. The Eyes looked off too he'd look one way and his eyebrows wouldn't shift nor his eyelids close or open. Not really groundbreaking once you start to look at it. Marvel on the other hand has used this technology better than Tarkins CGI.

    I'm definitely in the minority when it comes to the characters. I actually liked the characters in rogue one better than force awakens. I was frustrated with the mystery behind the characters - what is the Knights of ren? where did Rey come from? who is snoke? why is phases so lame? But rogue one is just cut and dry. I understood each character's motivations and their purpose in the plot. similar to how I felt about han, luke, and Leia in a new hope. I also felt that some of the force awakens characters weren't fleshed out very well. Despite Poe's charisma, Phasma's suit, and The Red Head's authority... they each seemed kind of thrown in and incomplete.

    • @KaylaMarie_
      @KaylaMarie_ Před 7 lety +3

      D Hardy I understand that. It's what makes me still interested to see the next films. But it also makes me a little nervous about the next films. there's a lot they're going to have to explain to make a full narrative. This wasn't the case in A New Hope which also had two sequels (and 4 prequels). I never felt like I had no idea who the characters were or how they were connected. Obviously some characters had a bit of mystery like Obi Wan but not to the levels of Snoke who is a huge question mark or Rey who comes off as the most naturally gifted jedi of all time without explanation.

    One of the most surprising moments for me was the return of Tarkin because I was amazed as to how they brought Peter Cushing back to life so beautifully. Seeing Cushing's character interacting with Ben Mendelson gave me goosebumps. To me that's one of the most daunting tasks ever. Sometimes we see body double with a CGI face of the actor plastered on the double, but here they pulled no stops. Seeing Cushing's Tarkin having a full on conversation with Krenic for almost an hour, direct eye contact, facial expressions, the way he walked looked as if he was still alive. To me that caught me that was the best moment ever in a Star Wars film. The scene with Peter Cushing felt organic to me in my opinion and they nailed it perfectly. Another highlight was Alan Tudyk's K2-SO because seeing K2-SO bringing that human personality to a robot was just great with all the quips, sarcasm, emotion etc. It's almost as if he had a synthetic human personality like Sonny from I-Robot which to me is one of the most underrated performances by him.

    I liked Rogue One but loved Force Awakens, though both had clear problems. To me, Rogue One was a film for fanboys (which isn't all bad). It was badass and dark and it answered age-old questions like, "Why was there a huge flaw in the Death Star?" and "Where does Vader live?" But it lacked humanity in its characters. By contrast, The Force Awakens was a film for general audiences (which isn't all good). It was fun and uplifting and it re-introduced Star Wars to a new generation. But it lacked originality in its story. Between the two, I much prefer TFA because it privileges characters and themes over action and world-building, and that's the stuff that really stays with you long after you've outgrown your Star Wars pajamas.

      I can see that. It's a fresher film. I just enjoyed the old-fashioned fun and magic of TFA more, even if it was a soft reboot. You have it the wrong way around. The only characters I actually cared about were in R1. TFA was for fanboys .. "oh look there's Chewie!" ... it was a re-hash of Ep. IV and JJ Abrams has zero originality - I could care less about Finn, they're cartoonish. R1 was obviously all new, and although a little long in th emiddle, it was an awesome ending and probably my favorite SW movie now. Only seen it once though.

Krennic really felt like how an Imperial officer should be, not the way Hux was in Force Awakens... he still seemed like he was some young kid. (Even thou he prolly is in his 30's). Hux just to me didn't have that overall presence of a high commanding Imperial officer. Krennic on the other hand felt exactly how one should be.

Kylo Ren was a success in that matter! Hux was very poor as a villain and a leader - he was well written, but the on-screen result was just terrible. The only thing he could convince me of was his desire to be Snoke's favourite instead of Ren. God bless Rogue One!

    Watched it for the second time today... tried to go in neutral and look specifically at the things id heard a bit of criticism towards in the hours between its midnight release on Thursday (UK fan) and 3pm Friday... and yeah the score wasn't great, at times, but in others I felt it was fine... was it classic Star Wars? No way, but it didnt take me out of the film or anything.
    I really dont get the whole characters being fleshed out thing though, but that might just be me... I thought to establish a crew of rebels, have us care about and then care about their deaths all in 2 hours 15 minutes, whilst also telling a story heavily focused on the Death Star, the Empire and what is a real kind of solid, combined formation of the Rebellion, it was very well done.
    The comparisons to the character work on The Force Awakens seem a little unfair too... they knew that they had to really establish them in TFA, as its the beginning of a new trilogy, and they NEEDED fans to really invest in them to help carry the next two movies (if they make it through Episodes 8 and 9)... whereas in this, whilst it seems harsh to label them 'expendable', they were in a way, at the expense of the story.

      It was fucking awesome and super realistic being the star destroyer was totally disabled by the bombers with no shields, engines or weapons at that time and there is no resistance in space so that could absolutely happen. They even rammed the destroyer slowly so not to damage their ship and then full throttled it after there in contact and started crushing into the ship as they pushed it like that ship crew knew what they were doing and have done it before, so fucking awesome:)!!!

      Well if you would like a little bit more backstory I can fill you in real quick. Crinic is a conniving gangster who wants nothing more than to have full control over the Death Star. Galen was manipulated by him to start on the super weapon and Galen dried to run away once he found out what was going on. Crinic thought that by getting into the families good graces he could manipulate them however he wanted, however Galen and his wife and Jen resisted. And that's why he is so willing to kill them.

      @BelegCuthali0n Před 7 lety

      I don't agree with you about the crawl. I was like where the F*** is the crawl at first too when the movie started. But then we got that opening scene from 15 years before which kinda had the flashback/ opening crawl function for the main story. And the main story was actually the filmed out version of the opening crawl of "A New Hope". So if anything an opening crawl for this movie would have been redundant.
