My favorite thing of this film is when Wolverine is introduced in the First X-Men movie it was about helping a girl get to a better place (Rogue) and his end is about helping a girl get to a better place (X23)

Patrick Stewart's performance hits so much harder if you've had a relative in that condition. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and Xavier's behavior reminded me so much of her, every scene with him was gut wrenching.
And Hugh Jackman really captures how taking care of someone with dementia can affect the caregiver. You can just feel how emotionally draining and wearying that experience is.
Dafne Keen was amazing too. That "daddy" line, holy crap. It's especially poignant when you realize that could be the first time she's said that word since she was raised in a lab and treated like an object all her life.

I definitely find Logan to be better than The Dark Knight. TDK is like a cool, slick cop drama with a very interesting performance from the main villain, but to me it always felt like it lacked an ability to make me invested in the main character. He was just kind of there to pull the story along. In Logan I fucking care about everybody.

  • @contactkeithstack
    @contactkeithstack Před 6 lety +1

Logan may be a better move in the sense that it's more compelling, but when I think of which blew my mind more it was the Dark Knight - not so much because of the journey, but because of certain images that to me became instantly iconic and imprinted on my mind - like Joker riding in the back of the stolen cop car as the sound fades, batman smashing through the roof of Scarecrow's car, the Joker threatening Racheal with the knife, the truck flipping. The soundtrack also I can still hear in my mind. The Dark Knight kind of reminds me of 2001 or ClockWork Orange in that way, these movies plots are great, but they are classics because of those iconic images that stay with you for years and continue to inspire you.

Here's my thought on Logan, they could've taken the whole 'superhero' elements with the powers and made it a story of this tough, loner guy, taking care of an old man that was like a father to him but he could never really show it, and discovering he has a daughter...and it would still be an amazing movie. It was just this amazing movie that happened to have Wolverine and X-men powers but the plot just blew it away and I can't wait to see it a second time.

So when I watch action movies for the first time I count the number of action scenes. But in this one I had to count the number of times I cried. Six, six times. The action was what got you to stop crying through the movie. Might be the best movie ever...

I don't think anyone made a reference to the old X-men because Logan didn't want to risk sparking a memory in Dr Xavier about how he was responsible for their deaths. I think Logan was trying his best to protect Xavier from that horrific memory.

The original X-Men movie came out in 2000, 18 years ago. If you were 14 when you saw that you are 32 now, the studios should understand that the people who grew up watching these characters (and the comic book fans as well of course) are old enough that an adult story appeals to them. Logan was perfect. I saw it in theaters twice and I've seen it a few times more after that. So good that just rewatching a trailer for it will get me close to tears because I remember the emotion from watching it.

I don't think it was as good as TDK. I think it's number two. You won't get that argument out of me. I saw both movies in the theater, at completely different times in my life. One was a 14 year old boy who learned what acting was, through Heath Ledgers performance as the Joker. Not to mention the tension that himself and Christian Bale created. The other side of the spectrum, a 22 year old "man", who balled like a bitch, who watched 17 years of his fandom unfold. That's two completely different things, sure. But I can put my biased for Hugh Jackman and Pattrick Stewart and the roles they played aside. I love both movies. But I don't see myself rewatching this nearly as much as I do TDK.

This movie also tackled the bullshit trope that you can just drive through a chain link fence. What amazing and plausible action! Loved every minute of this movie.

About Xavier killing those X-Men, it IS in the movie. After Oklahoma incident, In background radio in the car we can hear "similar to Westchester incident year ago, where hundreds were paralized and 7 X-Men died"
    Xavier killed his children.

15:30 - They hint on the radio after they left Vegas that Charles killed the X-Men. It is what charles is talking about before weapon 24 does his thing.
The director confirms that is the case. He even filmed it, but took it out as it would have taken away from Logan's story.

I think the best way to reintroduce Logan back to the screen with a new actor would be to make a Secret Wars movie. We already have a majority of established characters, and room to introduce more. I would have James Mangold direct, then have Stephen McFeely , and Mark Bomback do the screenplay, and use Jim Shooter to oversea the fine tuning of details. I think that would be epic

You said something about the "Westchester incident." I've now seen the movie twice and there's definitely a subtle nod to the fact that Professor X killed the X-Men. They say something on the radio that's cut off. the dialogue is something like "Several dead including 24 members of the....." then it trails off.

After the Casino scene on the radio the voice talks about the 'incident.' First he states a number of injured, then he clearly says 7 died. It cuts out right as he's saying the 'X-men.' Though he never gets the actual words out. But 7 dead. Storm, Cyc, Beast, Jean, Iceman, Colossus, Rogue. The X-men...dead :(

Good review, but as a fellow comic book geek, when you brought up the inevitable reboot of Wolverine, I'm surprised you don't bring up the possibility that X-23 becomes the new Wolverine. I would love that, as Dafne Keen was awesome in Logan and I would love to see her put on the yellow spandex, as the character does in the comics.

Logan is the closest we'll ever get to a superhero Western. It has the same feel as the original True Grit or Unforgiven, with a shout-out to the super posse from Butch & Sundance. Dark anti-heroes that is brutal not just in the violence but in the emotional toll it takes and injustice it doles out.

They really knocked it out of the park with this one, I would have liked Logan and Charles to get a Vito Corleone moment and have some resemblance of peace just for a short period of time. For me its one of the best superhero movies alongside the dark knight. When Laura turns the cross into an X that made me cry a little, the x-men we all grew up with are dead and we won't ever so those actors play those characters again.

If there ever was an "old man batman" movie, it would likely have lots of dialogue. Now where could we find a writer/director who is really good at dialogue, who also happens to like - no, LOVE - comic books, and Batman in particular? Perhaps a fat man.
This project is crying out for you , Kevin. Also, Ming is the Mingest Ming who ever Minged.

Logan has a lot of subtle horror elements. Both the Prof. X stuff they talk about, but also the fact that X-23 is going to suffer the same poisoning as Logan did and probably die in her 50s, at the latest. And also the general state of the world is an outright dystopia.

The MCU is Easily the gold standard of superhero movies. Winter Soldier is my favorite movie in the MCU... yet it's only my 3rd favorite superhero movie behind The Dark Knight and Logan side by side. And as much as I Loved Winter Soldier, there's a MASSIVE gap between The Dark Knight/Logan and Winter Soldier--it's That Amazing!!

Dafne Keen, Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman all had borderline nomination performances. Whether they get the nomination or not will probably depend on what their competition ends up being. If this year doesn't provide a ton of great acting performances, I can definitely see 1 or 2 of these guys getting a nod. I hope. Movie was badass and needs recognition.

Might want to see the theories that the Nerdist channel talked about. That Wolverine was the one who killed several Xmen like the radio mentioned in the film, but didn't name who did it. If you go back to when he first goes to see Charles, when he goes to leave you hear Charles say "What have you done?!" Just a suggestion. The theories seemed pretty interesting.
