I thought the empath crying for Drax was a touching moment. Normally, empaths usually handle sadness and tell the audience they are sad lol. He must be reeeally sad inside.
That was one of the best moments of character development for Drax. Showing how he may seem stoic, and kind of odd, but inside, he has deep and emotional wounds of his loss of his family. All in about a 10 second moment with her touching him and instantly bursting into tears. Loved it.

Agreed. Relationships are an ongoing thing, they don't just have a happy ending at the end of Vol. 1.

As a testament to how awesome this movie was, my wife DID die from pancreatic cancer just a week before this came out and I still enjoyed it. Gotta admit - there are points where I was triggered but my circumstances shouldn't detract from my thoughts of the movie and she wanted me to see it for the both of us. She loved all the marvel movies. Guardians was her favourite by far. As time went on she was less and less in the mood for movies and didn't see anything from civil war onwards, but she was eager to see Guardians 2. We kept making goals of "make it to this trip, or that event and the one she missed out on was making it to see Guardians 2. I'd even contacted the cinema to see if there was a way to get an advanced screening but it wasn't to be. My kids loved the first one - we just skipped forward till after he was beamed up, but it's going to be hard to skip those parts in this one so will have to delay them seeing it for a few years unfortunately. Will probably go and see it again soon for a re-watch though.
Paul Robinson my sincere condolences my friend. I was very triggered by the first one due to similar circumstances between my mother and myself and actually went in 5 minutes late the next three times I saw it because of that scene. I can't say you ever get over it you just learn how to get through it in a better way, and I guess movies can be a part of the healing. Best wishes pal.
There were a lot of tears in our theater at the end. That funeral scene was incredibly touching. I'm kind of tearing up right now just thinking about it.
I started bawling when Rocket told Yondu that there was only one spacesuit
tbh i thought peter quill was going to use his cool space helmet to survive the vacuum of space like he did in the first movie, but he never used it although he used it many times in the fight right before.
IIRC there is a close up shot after the helmet got smashed fighting Ego.
Doom which was stupid because it was digital/holographic every time he's used it except when it needed to get "broken" for plot reasons. HUGE pothole which made the death meaningless.
Doom His dead was well done. It also showed the audience that James Gunn isn't scared to kill off an important character. I also liked that he didn't end the movie with a joke, everyone left the theater with there hearts a little broken.

Well, the actor took a selfie of himself with the Mary Poppins book, so it's definitely a thing.
that Mary Poppins line was the fucking play of the game.
They referenced their own issue of being a "middle" story when Quill and Gomora are arguing about having an unspoken thing and Peter says that Cheers had to delay the romance and meaning so that the episodes could continue to build the tension and flirt, because once the romance is solidified the story arc is over. It's a meta reference to their own movie being a tension builder and not a completer.

I'm really bummed out by the loss of Michael Rooker's character. I've loved him since "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". He's one of the most criminally under rated actor working today. I hope he's still on contract with Disney/Marvel so he could perhaps show up in a Star Wars film or maybe play a different character in a Marvel film but he's got so much prosthetic make-up on that he's unrecognizable. Here's to having unreasonable dreams...

It really sounds like the sound is going through some kind of compression. And even the video is kinda messed up, just weird is all.

my favorite moment in the movie and one brilliant piece of acting is when normally totally cool and goofy Peter Quill says "you killed my mother" to Ego full and Hatred and anger for his Dad. so damn good.

IH8YH I love his reaction to when Ego says "sorry I had to put that tumor in her brain" and everything stops for peter and he just starts firing his gun so many times into Ego not even giving a shit what he said before about him being his father or anything all he had to say was that he killed his mom and he flipped the switch so quick.

I mean I saw that coming miles away. Of course he was the one the caused the cancer.
One of my favorite scenes in the first movie was when Quill yells at the guy in the prison listening to his Walkman and he says "Hooked on a Feeling, Blue Swede! That song belongs to me!"
Hurts my heart man. So do Rocket's emotional scenes in the first and second movies.
I did not love Vol. 2 as much as Vol. 1, but I still loved it. The reason why I still love it is because the shit has fucking heart. It has a soul. Drax was a dick! But when he's sitting there with Mantis, and he's talking about his family, and she touches him and he just starts crying. It's like damn, he is really hurting inside. And when they're about to leave Ego, and Peter isn't there, and he's asking where is Peter, for all the shit he talks he has made a connection with this group of individuals. Then when you see how he holds Baby Groot at the end, you can see that he was a dad.

I did as well. I disagreed with Kevin and Mark's sentiment, I think this one had more meat and interesting dynamics going on than the first movie. First movie was a good set up, this one was a good film.

Jordan McMichael I did too. I love the character growth and deeper development of everyone's relationships, especially Yondu. The scenery was also far more beautiful and interesting. and finally I am a big Kurt Russell fan, and his part in this movie made me happy.
While I love this movie, The Winter Soldier is still the best 2nd movie. It's actually the best MCU movie. But, GotG Vol 2 soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks - of any movie ever (along with Almost Famous and A Knight's Tale).
Julie Harden it's pretty good but let's not get hysterical. They knew they couldn't talk volume 1 and it doesn't compare to those other movies I think most would agree.

Terminator and T2 weren't even the same style of movie. Terminator was more of a horror and T2 was more action.
T1 has a lot more action than it is given credit for when you consider its ALL action from the bar scene to the end.
Yes, but it was paced like a serial killer, horror type movie. It had a gloomy atmosphere and feel. T2 just went, here's our balls and they RULE. Same with Alien and Aliens. Nothing wrong with either, just two VERY different movies that somehow matched their predecessors. Very hard to do with a sequel, though lately, sequels have been upping their originals. TDK, Capt. America: Winter Soldier, etc.
Well...Arnold was saying "here's my balls and they rule" throwing hillbillies out of a phone booth, throwing a guy through a wall, shotgun killing the gunshop owner, owning an entire police station, etc. That stuff is BAD ASS and some of it is even hilarious (because, Arnold...). The real difference is T2 was big and had groundbreaking (SFX). I will also say it made Arnold kid friendly. For a long time T2 was my fav movie but not after I finally saw T1.
T2 also kept that great narrative and storytelling from the first. People forget how deep T2 really is amongst its peers of action movies. SFX are still ahead of most films today.

Listening to the two of you describe this movie lays out exactly why 1 is a filmmaker and the other is a critic. Imagination is key here and one can find wrong in a bowl of Joy and the other can figure out a way to make great use of a bowl of poop.

Robbie Rulz! People keep saying this but GOTG doesn't have the awe factor and intriguing universe that Star Wars has.
I think I realized Yondu was SPOILERS going to die was when he was talking to Rocket about them being alike. I was like "Oh, this is Yondu's redemption, he has to die. Fuck."
Yondu's Southern "Country Boy" Accent is the best thing they could have done with that character and Michael Rooker's delivery is what sells it the first film and makes it work in Vol 2. This is definitely Yondu's movie and it works.
rocket racoon laying down traps for the ravagers was one of the most iconic scenes of this movie.

Quick correction on what Marc said about Mantis: The character is German / Vietnamese (in the books), though the actress Pom Klementieff is French (tough did not live in France for most of her childhood) with a French-Russian father and Korean mother.

I don't see how you can say the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was perfection when their plan at the end to beat the big bad guy was so stupid and suicidal and never should have worked.
I really enjoyed the movie in 3D. They did a good job of finding more to do with it than long arrows.
I'm glad I watched it twice cause I was a tad underwhelmed the first time even tho I really enjoyed it but the second time man everything clicked with me. So much heart
Baby Groot Opening Credits sequence? Legit...my favorite sequence in ANY of these Marvel Movies. Agree the Star Lord version was unexpected and definitely showed the tone, this one just made me happy. I had the biggest smile on my face and just felt good.
1 year later and probably watching this movie after a dozen plus times i STILL ball like an absolute baby from the moment Yondu says "he may have been your father boy, but he wasn't your daddy" right up until the end of the film its 10 minutes of just pure gut punching emotion and i love it!
I really have to agree with Kevin. In a movie that is literally knitted together from a seemingly endless array of amazing moments, the one moment that steals it all...

I'm glad that they finally explained Nebula to me. Having not read the comics, I didn't know the story about how or why she was half cybernetics yet was a "sister" to Gamora, so this was some nice filler.
That said, I loved it! It was an amazing film that I felt exceeded (maybe just barely) the first movie, which I thought impossible. Thumbs up!
I finally saw this movie last night for the first time, and the ending had me bawling, that cat stevens song just brought out the waterworks.
Guardians of the Galaxy (both films) did for me what the "Back to the Future" trilogy did long ago. Few films of this comedic nature are so well-rounded in terms of cadence, story arch, visuals, music and talent; simply put, you just don't want to get off once you take the ride...I love it!!
I really loved the connection between getting his first two "soundtracks" from his mom and being able to have the next one be from his dad (Yondu). Its a touching idea that we carry parts of our parents with us even after they are gone.
1) We really needed a flashback with the mom. We needed Peter to show us how much he loved his mom, not just tell us, when that's his key motivation at the end.
2) They tried to give Yondu the Snape treatment, but we had 8 movies with Snape and that revelation scene was far stronger than the stuff with Yondu.
3) Marvel manages even be able to make a one-off villain out of a living effing planet. I like these movies, but I'm so over the villain of the week formula.

They actually said it didn't reach the heights of the first one.
For all the movie sequels that claim Empire Strikes Back as their primary inspiration, Guardians Vol.2 is the first that actually matches the most daring aspect of Empire - that it's non-linear story without a clear narrative thrust. Both start with the end of an adventure and pull the heroes together in the end, but the middles are very meandery, with the main protagonist going to an isolated planet for introspective soul-searching while the other half of the family has a series of misadventures with the antagonists. Empire Strikes Back is guilty of everything Marc criticizes Guardians 2 for. :)
Winter Soldier was for captain America what Empire was for Star Wars (the way i see it)
And Vol.2 was for Guardians what Empire was for Star Wars (the way I see it).
I am yet to see it, perhaps this thursday :)
Except the good guys win and the story is bad.
Gamora's trauma is not that she has a father who she F-ing hates and has to break away from. Nebula and Gamora were abducted by Thanos who then imposed himself as their father, abused and turned them into weapons. Gamora asks nebula to travel with her and together help save other little girls from suffering their fate. She does not spend this movie trying to work out her "daddy issues" She left that behind during the last film. She is now living the best life she can and doing the best she can for others after surviving her abduction and abuse.
I honestly feel like at the end of any movie the Bernardin family sees, Marc's kids look up with gleaming eyes screeching, "THAT WAS AWESOME, DADDY!" and then Marc shakes his head, leans down and says, "See, the thing about the first movie was it was fundamentally about trauma..."
As someone who was adopted, the whole growing up not knowing, and Peters relationship with Ego just broke me. It never occurred to me that it affected me because of that though.

Her arc with her sister and how it progresses amounts to, "you need redemption, _I don't_." I thought that was damn daring. There is no real happy ending for those two, it's too late. That's bold.
Nebula looks to me like she's 100% ready to die trying to kill Thanos. If she's going to die, I truly hope she goes like a boss. Nebula is hardcore; purple cyborg waifu af.

HowManyTimes234 actually relevant and carefully thought-out complete ideas too! Kevin needs to think twice about maybe not baking for several days before doing a podcast where every other line was this made me cry. At a true drama he must completely dihydrate!

For me, that scene towards the end of the movie where Rocket tells the crew they have to leave Ego's Planet, is my favorite scene of the film. I dunno I just love that scene, he shoots Gamora to stop her from killing herself from saving Star-Lord, and when Drax keeps asking Rocket where's Quill? I just love it!

My only problem with Guardians 2 was the tone of the movie was "off". I loved the movie, I think it was very good, but it could have been great if some of the "sweet" and sad and bittersweet moments had not been undercut by the constant snark.
There was never a moment in the movie where there was not a joke ready to take your emotional state and squirt it with water from a flower.
The only exception being one AMAZING Drax moment with him and Mantis that truly gave me an understanding of who Drax is (you will know it when you see it). Other than that, every scene had to have a jokey element and not every scene needed that. Had the snark been toned down for a few of those moments, had I been "allowed" to smile sweetly, or shed a tear, I would have enjoyed it much much more.
As it is, I still think the movie was a fun experience and a departure (in the best way) of the typical formula of the comic book movie.
Also, as Kevin mentioned, the music just did not grab me in the same way as the first movie. It was fitting in the scene, but I left the movie not remembering any of it. Where I am still humming music from the first movie every once in a while.
Looking forward to the big showdown between Thanos and Drax. And Nebula too... maybe they will fight each other over who gets to kill Thanos first :)
A lot of this movie seemed to be about bad fathers.
Gamora and Nebula were trying to kill each other because Thanos was a terrible father. Yondu didn't deliver Peter because he found out Ego was killing his own children. Yondu was himself a pretty flawed substitute father figure.
Of all the reviews I've seen that try to nitpick this movie but not really convince me of their side, Marc has actually made some good critique.
I will say something nice about the movie. People (Critics What the Flick) keep saying they didn't like the soundtrack. I actually liked the soundtrack. I instantly revognized Fleetwood Mack in one scene, and it was fitting and great when they used it again in the father son fight.
Yondu was the best character in the movie
They did the young face thing with Jeff Bridges in Tron 2 as well.
Mark 16:26 this film was about the God Complex vs Opening up one's Vulnerability in order to become a better person.
Just got home from my second showing.. It seems the popular thing to do(many critics and fans) is say Guardians 2 was good/great but not as good as the first. I could kinda see what they were saying, but after my second showing, NO Doubt about it to me there are many elements of Vol. 2 that are flat out better then the superb Vol. 1 . I can't choose which I like better and that's saying a Lot!
Just ONE of the many great things about both Guardians movies is how well they stand up to repeated viewings and how much more you pick up each time. Gunn seems to have fallen into his perfect environment with deeper meaning and emotion wrapped in some of the most gorgeous eye-candy to hit the big screen. That and his knack for matching the musical cues so perfectly and yet not always blatantly. That music in the scene with Rocket and Yondu - I could watch that rather murderous and near psychopathic over and over, chuckling every time and then realise what just happened and how subversive that scene is. I am really not so keen to see the Guardians handled by anyone else or see them rubbing up with the Avengers - but Gunn apparently has creative control of the characters sooooo maybe...

No one seems to have noticed (at least not that I've seen) that Kurt Russel's Ego is clearly a composite of Ego and the Gardener.
Gun did some excellent character development this time around which worked SO perfectly. I was worried the humor would fall flat or feel forced but it was just plain spot on. Admittedly there were two jokes during the very grand final action set piece that didn't work as well -- one went on way too long and the other was ill placed and undermined the momentum of a great battle scene but those are quibbles. 4.5 / 5 stars.
I enjoyed this movie so much more the second time.

I agree that Peter does not travel an arc as much as his character weathers the hits that just keep on coming...Things Meridith's little Star Lord looses in this movie: 1. His signature mask, 2. I liked this better than Winter Soldier...but then again..I like the less traditional movies anyway. Winter Soldier felt very traditional to me. Not like super cliche or anything, just very standard. The twists didn't excite me or change much of anything to me...SHIELD was always sketchy so the Hydra twist didn't surprise me. With Guardians Vol.2, it was heavily foreshadowed and I kinda knew what was going to happen for most of the movie, but every beat of the movie had so much heart. The characters seemed so much more real than any of the Earth-based heroes. I have a hard time comparing the 2 Guardians movies to choose a favorite. But without a second thought I can consider Guardians my favorite set of MCU movies.

yeesh. i used to really appreciate Kevin's assessments of movies but he's so constantly over the top and gushing about every comic book movie that comes out. Same old lines everytime too, "more of this less of everything else", "take all of my money". He's completely blinded from all the many weaknesses of Guardians 2... at one stage he calls the movie 'perfection'. That's ridic.
i watch him for his insights not just his gushy teenager outbursts.
