How amazingly self aware and hilarious would it have been, if one of the after credits scenes just had Bruce and Clark eating and Clark says "So your mom's name was Martha too".
FYI : the author Roderick Thorp did write the novel 'The Detective' and 'Nothing Lasts Forever' (which was made into the first 'Die Hard'). Frank Sinatra stared in the movie made from the book and having the same name 'The Detective'. The author then wrote 'Nothing Lasts Forever' as sequel to 'The Detective' specifically for a Frank Sinatra movie to be made from it, but he declined to star (I believe Frank Sinatra even had a production option on the story for some years). 'Nothing Lasts Forever' was offered to and passed on by a few action movie stars, before Bruce Willis took the role and the title character's name was changed (along with a surprisingly few story details). But Kevin Smith was right that 'Die Hard' was originally offered to Arnold Schwarzenegger to be adapted as a sequel to 'Commando' before the producers landed Bruce Willis. p.s. Kevin was thinking of '58 Minutes' a novel that was the basis for 'Die Hard 2'. But '58 Minutes' was written by a different author: Walter Wager.
Marc Bernardin nailed it with the fact that 'Die Hard' (specifically the source material 'Nothing Lasts Forever') was indeed written with the intention to be "a Sinatra jammy jam".
3 episodes down in The Punisher. I like it. Violent. No holding back. Kinda cool. Don't mind the pacing.
experiment54
Just finished it.
Put it this way, the violence is great but definitely delivers the message that violence is ugly.
It becomes ridiculously hard to watch.
For instance, the Saw franchise is so over the top that it's hard to feel anything.
Punisher is almost too realistic hahaha. In the most powerful way.
A sickeningly scary way.
The Punisher is easily 9.25/10
Steven Adams I like Saw. I like the situations and the puzzles :) The violence in The Punisher is definitely to the point haha no prisoners taken. Its what happens when you aren't much stronger than an opponent. I think its pretty realistic. I've been a martial artist for many years.
The pacing was a bitch much for me. But still SOLID.
Finished it last night.
I found it fantastic and thought provoking. So much so that my brain is trying to make me think they re-edited after delaying, and rightly so for me, its release because of a gun based tragedy.
There were a couple things I found, but they are such minor criticisms, that they didn't bother me.
Don't get me wrong, it's not life changing and is only a tv show, but the show is pretty amazing at running the razors edge of brutality and beauty. Yes lol I know that's an odd at best statement.
In short, pun intended, The Punisher blew me away.
do a full review of punisher, I would love to hear you talk about the character development in this show.
Kevin,
I really Fuckin love this show. You and Marc have great chemistry which really works in the laid back yet very informative way you guys deliver such awesome, and current content relative to all things geek related. In addition to the chemistry you both have great insights due to your front row seats (with the All Access passes) in this world. I am really enjoying the new format with you two guys having your casual conversations in front of an audience...especially when you involve the audience in the conversation (Q&A, etc...). I feel that the subject matter you cover is so relevant your show could actually be a 21st century replacement for what we have previously known as the Late Night talk show. I'd watch it daily. In fact the format had gone through some changes a few years ago resulting in something like "The Daily Show". In my opinion, "Fatman on Batman" takes it up a notch. On another note I wish the Marc haters would back the FUCK OFF. Marc brings it and the two of you really play off each other resulting in a Helluva good show due in part that it's clear that you guys are having a Helluva good time. Keep It Up fellas.
Take care.
Tim Burton
Not having an audience used to be one of my favorite things about this show. Damn.
Man, this shit must just be tearing you up inside
only podcasts ill watch are sir kevin smiths
That's ME there sitting by "cat ears." We had seen an unfinished WB screening and I saw it again and I musta missed the Green Lantern part. there was no Green Lantern that I saw. Maybe it was really quick and I blinked or something.
No, no, you should have claimed you wanted to un-spoil the people who "knew" about GL
during the Blizzard CG like battle when everyone was vs Steppen Wolf. GL and Martian in the battle.
I was just gonna say something about that false review ahahaaa great Lantern intro.
YES I totally remember that now.. It was really quick Wonder Woman's story. I didn't remember when KS asked though lol.
I am a Marvel fan but would love for DC to make amazing movies. Justice League is pretty fun but rushed and messy.
1. Wonder Woman ( by far the best )
2. Justice League ( more humor, rushed, some bad CGI, several great sequences )
3. Man of Steel ( dark but good take on Superman )
4. BvS ( Hated how Lex was done and that Batman was a killer. Doomsday was awful )
5. Suicide Squad ( by far the worst )
The Uncanny Mike. I found mediocre (at best) Man of Steel and I have not watched Suicide Squad . Other than that I totally agree with you. And Superman and Batman are some of my fav heroes... Damn. I waited for three movies to feel goosebumps from Superman. Damn, again. But I did...
The Uncanny Mike for me MoS comes first, WW second and JL third
You're on point but like everyone else with JL.
1. Wonder Woman
2. MoS
3. BvS
4. Justice League
5. Suicide Squad
The Uncanny Mike
That's my order of the movies as well.
It's weird though... almost all my likes and dislikes for NO and SS are the same and yet I really enjoyed JL(with all it's flaws) and enjoyed very little SS.
Eh. Go figure lol
For me, it all comes down to the villain, so my list is: 1-Man of Steel (Zod was great) 2-Wonder Woman (Ares was lame) 3-Justice League (Steppenwolf was even lamer) 4-BvS (Luther and Doomsday were super lame) 5-Suicide Squad (Enchantress was absolute lamest).
The Punisher was excellent. I throughly enjoyed it. Just all around good content - from establishing a plot and characters, to the technicalities, not just being Taken, etc.
There is something special about old Kev talking about the 300th super hero movie and 100th super hero TV show saying "Jeez, LOTR fans, you had 6 movies...isn't that enough?" :P
I don't like how rare videos in your normal studio have become. Oh well, thanks for the vid.
I really miss the old show setup.
Kevin: you don't have to worry about the warner brothers
Mark : you have to watch out for Dot. Dot's the one you gotta fucking watch out for
They gave Bill Finger credit in the Arkham Asylum games.
It seems likes Kevin's comments about the scandles going on was edited out.
😈👿
Matt Jones I've been waiting ever since this broke to hear Kevin's thoughts. Wtf man
Guess he didn't prepare anything lol
If anyone's interested, he goes pretty in depth about all the Weinstein stuff on one of the last 2 or 3 episodes of Hollywood Babble On. He really breaks down during it and it's pretty heavy stuff. I know it's not exactly addressed on Fatman on Batman but better than nothing!
Marc O'Connor thank you! Been wondering that as well
People forget Kevin was in a Dare Devil Movie as a Doctor of all things
18:15 Im dying! LMFAO XD
"Remember that time we all went walkin? Lets not do that shit again" . LMAO
Guys n gals lets all just calm the fuck down here, this is our boy kev and his bud mark giving their opinions based on what they know. Take a deep breath and pull your heads out of your asses and look at things from another perspective for a moment. You dont have to dog ppl in order to make things better, lending Constructive Critism offers opportunities to everyone. Not just what you want. You catch more flies with honey, rather than shit.
When they were discussing Tom Cruise AS The Mummy and the marketing for it...
Please someone tell me I wasn’t the only one shouting at my device, “SHOW ME THE MUMMY!!!”
I already saw the movie...It's ok. 6/10, not as bad as BvS, but not as good as Wonder Woman.
I have it at like 4/10. A below average movie. I loved MoS, and I wanted to see this huge storyline of him going from Farmboy to Icon.... BvS destroyed that and me. JL was just... underwhelming to say the least. His return was so poorly handled, as was the entire last third of this movie
I did not like MoS...I thought it was really boring...But gotta say that I'm not a big Superman fan.
For me, either make him idealistic like back in the day, or make him evil like in Injustice. Snyder tried to make him detached and aloof, but i don't think that works.
Ew, idealistic... ew, evil Superman trope. Disagree I guess. MoS to me has it's flaws, no doubt, but it is probably one of the deeper CBMs of all time, while also having great action and a top 3 villain. I could wax poetically about that movie for a an entire podcast mini series.
Wow, do i disagree...
The action was really boring to me, since you know Superman can't really get hurt unless cryptonite is involved, there were absolutely no stakes during the whole 'villain throws car at the hero'.
I like Michael Shannon, but top 3? Joker (at least 2 of them), Loki, King Pin(from Netflix), Hela, and that's off top without really going back...
The stakes was all of mankind... that was pretty obvious. And also, did you forget that Zod was killed... and then Superman died in BvS as well (no Kryptonite), so he can die. But one could argue none of them knew their power levels on Earth and how they absorb damage. The Kryptonians were shown several times getting hurt, but ultimately it was about Superman saving people and the world. No bigger stakes than that.
Zod was a multi layered villain with an ending that was also layered. Let me break it down for you
-Zod was not just a megalomaniac. He was a Kryptonian Patriot, this angle makes the character much more sympathetic in his goals, since all he wanted was to save his race.
-Zod was doomed to die. He followed the ways of Krypton, and lacked the ability to make choice and adapt. His death is bonded to that of Krypton.
-The big running theme in the movie is no Jesus symbolism, but the notion of freedom of choice. Superman was sent to Earth to be a bridge between Humanity and Krypton, and was given the key to bring back his people. In the end he broke from that and chose to side entirely with Earth because of how Zod was going about it. Superman lived because he had the ability to make a choice, Zod lacked that and died.
-When Zod gave his speech prior to the fight, you felt his anger and that he is a broken man. One of the great things about Kryptonians in this movie is how they are all so cold and reserved. This makes Zod's anger pop out way more.
-Zod lost his reason to live, and was going to either die a hero or avenge his people. LIke Faora said "A good death is its own reward", his warrior mentality was his driving force in the end. Zod got what he wanted, he died a hero in his own mind, and that is the truly tragic end to his character.
So yeah... he's a great villain. IMO he's better than the Joker, but he's at the very least deserving of top 3.
"Though the final tally varies as to exactly how much time Sir Anthony Hopkins spent on screen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter-some reports put it at 12 minutes, others say it's just under 16 minutes-what's not in dispute is the fact that Hopkins won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1992."
I love Marc and his blunt honesty.
I liked Paul Giamatti as Rhini too. Very underrated spiderman movies are those 2
"They finally made a movie where people will go, and enjoy, and be like... yes, this is what I want out of the DC universe."
LOL
+ZX I walked out saying wow dc made the best MARVEL film but that was not a dc film
I reckon getting BIG HERO SIX into the Gaurdians of the Galaxy universe would be great.
The problem with "The Dark Universe" was that they took horror movie icons, and wanted to create a CGI heavy action movie universe, and with the Mummy at least they tried WAY too hard to cram in the "universe" tie in seeds. No no no no no no no no. Make HORROR movies with your horror movie icons! People will watch that. And then leave just enough of a tease of the greater universe to get people talking. THEN after a BUNCH of awesome solo movies, start thinking about doing movies that have multiple monsters in them at a time.
the punisher tv shows blows JL out of the water, waaaaaay better!
+Lord Mike all the Netflix marvel shows better then all marvel/dc films
Dan S why can't fruit be compared
Lord Mike oldest pros and cons to everything of a TV show you have more time to create more characters more time to get invested in those characters of a movie as what two hours long would I have to get invested in these characters and 30 minutes especially with all DC does it and Marvel
I like Startrek Dscovery
If Disney owns the rights to Fox will they finally have the rights to release the original Star Wars trilogy theatrical versions in UHD?
You won't have to watch Justice League a second time to spot Superman' s moustache
Omg when he opens the box of fucking cereal i couldn't stop
What the hell was said about Kreisberg by Kevin that lead to it being cut out?
Slappysan I know right?
Just like the Josh Frank interview...we will never know =(
yeah- that caught me off-guard too, and I wanted to hear it.
this is gold. these live shows have a special energy to them!
Morbias is part of the Blade universe. There is a deleted scene of him in the Blade movie.
kevin doesnt know how big middle earth mythology is
Oh man, the cadence song from ep1 Punisher! Holy shit, "I'm gonna find a home for this!", that was a crazy/awesome scene.
I think that the Doom Patrol guy is before Professor X (Wheelchair boss)
I really hate the live episodes
Saw the notification, literally jizzed through my wall
There was a Blade tv show, wasn't there? I remember seeing something. Or was it just a mini series?
There has been a Blade TV show already. It aired in 2006, but only ran for 12 episodes before being cancelled. I thought it was good but anything good or sci-fi hasn't lasted long for a long time.
It was a mini-series and it was trying to have the look and feel of the original movie version, but just missed the mark on a lot of quality and story telling. I believe it was on Spike TV, not sure, but it did not have all the pieces to use from the Marvel Comics continuity to really do anything with it. The acting was terrible too.
Douglas Freeman yes it was on spike but it wasn't a mini series it just cost to much to make and the views was big enough to bring it back for a second season.
@kevinsmith - Anthony Hopkins had 16 minutes of screen time in Silence of The Lambs. Judi Dench had 8 mins of screen time in Shakespeare in Love.
"Fifteen hours of walking through Middle-Earth," faithfully recreates the experience of reading the books.
Punisher on Netflix is Awesome!
Its fine. Nothing special.
John Mullaney joke not Patton Oswald
12 minutes on justice league and 2 and a half on punisher?...cmon guys
Seems like no one got the Animaniacs joke. Opinion of the live audience dropped a notch. LOL
This has been my thing for years. After everyone liked Big Hero 6, there should have been more animated Marvel flicks in their own universe. Live action can't be lent to everything.
32:00 minute mark "when we start to discuss the definition of a monopoly"
'Die Hard" is based on the 1979 novel "Nothing Lasts Forever," a sequel to "The Detective."
this is one of the best fatman on batmans
There really isn't any monopoly concerns with Disney so the deal would go through easy. I think Disney will end up buying Fox, they need a way to release adult content on their streaming service.
The only Gov issue with Disney acquiring FOX is one company can't own two network (non-cable) tv channels. Disney currently owns ABC, which means they can't acquire the FOX tv channel.
Good call, I forgot Fox was a network station. Trump's FCC has already slashed rules to allow a company to own multiple T.V. stations and newspapers, and I doubt Trump stops his buddy from making money.
Hans Gruber could definitely be an anti-hero today
26:40 The blind faith of feige after ghostbusters is kinda confusing.
6 years later noticing they skipped a section talking about the allegations from flash show runner damn
I keep hearing all these people going on about how great it would be for Disney to buy Fox and acquire the rights to these Marvel characters, but isn't anyone worried about Disney being in charge of making all these future movies? They've already stated in the past that they'll never do an R-rated movie. I mean, I know they could license out different titles to others, but how likely are they to do that? Can you imagine if Disney had made Daredevil for their streaming channel? Does anyone think it would be as good? What would Logan or Deadpool or Blade have looked like if Disney had made them?
I am so happy that Kevin Smith even thinks Morbius is a good idea and a cool character! I've dealt with so many comics fans who don't even know who he is but I'm a HUGE Morb fan who's really hoping this movie is good news!
"He's the title character, he literally dies hard" - Barney Stinson
That guys comment about Aquaman being like Drax in that he’s comic relief but he doesn’t realize it.... saw the movie, wtf is he talking about? I didn’t get that vibe at all
It’s on the same level as WW, can’t wait til Deathstroke movie, Suicide Squad 2, next Superman movie & Aquaman movie!
+Larry Conger bvs was wayyyyy better
Fantastic show. Die Hard was based on Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp which is a sequel to The Detective that was made into a movie starring Frank Sinatra. Apparently Sinatra passed on the script for what became Die Hard.
Tosh Omni and in the book the MC is an ass kicking grandpa.
Great point. Moreover, it is interesting that in the book the corporation is indeed evil and the terrorists planned on throwing the money they stole from it out the window instead of keeping it for themselves. There's also the possibility that if the character that inspired John McClane hadn't gotten involved nobody would have died. Additionally, the whole thing was apparently inspired by the 1970's disaster film The Towering Inferno.
Marvel should do the Dark Universe based on Dracula, Werewolf by Night, Frankenstien of the Marvel universe.
1:18:07 **Single Tear**
I think the obvious movie WB needs to do is create a DC production studio with a a lead producer.
I was watching a tv show called assembling the Justice League or something like that which basically was about the DCEU and the lead up to The Justice League movie. Anyway Kevin Smith hosted it and he didn't even get a premier invite. Should have told them to piss off.
With Disney owning everything ... now they can do the X-Men vs the Alien Brood...
How about Alfred (Batman) as one of the original "guy in the chair".
Disney wouldn't need to buy Fox for Mulder and Scully to investigate an X-crime - Fox could do that right now (and they've both already shown up in a Simpsons episode)!
Maybe have them in an episode of Legion...
I love that Kevin didn't shit on the Morbius idea. I hate it when people jump on this hate band wagon. Morbius really is no different than Blade in regards to his connections to the MCU. He doesn't HAVE to cross over with Spiderman. If Dexter was a vampire he would Morbius. There's alot of story potential.
Awesome show!! Best podcast show, always makes me laugh & smile. Love ya Kevin Smith! FYI: I just bought the Kevin Smith aka Fatman Funko POP. Looks great! Keep up the good work guys. See ya next time on the same bat-channel at the same bat-time.
Getting the Fox licenses would be bad because of the control over the market. Look at what they are already doing to theaters with Star Wars.
What did Kevin say about Andrew ?
I like the idea of a Morbius movie but I don't know much about the character sadly, just what I have seen from the 90's spiderman series on fox kids, but I like what I have seen, I hope fox doesn't sell to Disney, while it would be nice to see the Fantastic 4, and X-men along with The Avengers, it's too much in one spot, but that's just me...
Why not just wear HEADSETS GUYS LOL
Bernardin in one beat casts shade on the academy for their "short memories" and in the next beat can't remember that Howery's ENTIRE performance in "Get Out" was comic relief. Better move out that glass house, Marc.
I think Marc meant "The Dame" not "the late", LOL, Judi Dench is still alive.
Kevin started to say something like "the lake" or "the late" and Marc cut him off and just said "Judi Dench"
Im still waiting for new jay and bob..
I like that he grew his hair back for it instead of faking it
I think justice league suffered from not having the chance to flag out characters like marvel did. The rush to get JL out to cash in hurt it . The flash movie and aquaman should have came first .
52:08 LMFAO
Stop eating for fucks sake! You're making me hungry haha 😂
18:16 Aww Marc (but seriously I thought the same thing!)
Werewolf by Night to introduce Moon Knight?!
dude blade and morbius have crossed paths rise of the seven sons
In regards to the Universal Dark Universe, if they actually did it right; right cast, right script, it could be so amazing.
Yay!! Morbius The Living Vampire !!! Hope it turns out. And Marvel Entertainment has an... interesting history with those 1970's horror titles, because they probably don't have rights to use "Dracula" and "Son of Dracula" any longer.
The 1970's were actually an extremely "interesting" time at Marvel Comics. Peak "Satanism" and "Mysticism", but also other cultural trends like female heroes (Ms.Marvel and Spider-Woman), and kung-fu, like a certain 'Power Man and Iron Fist"
isnt logan just children of men but with mutants?
Please post your Justice League review! I want to see how you think it compares to BvS
The Punisher is, in my opinion, the best Marvel TV show out there.
Isn't Disney/Marvel re-acquiring X-men/F4 just getting back IP they previously owned?
Wasn't it Mulaney that made the money joke?
Kevin, Marc, give us a Justice League review.
make the rift war saga by Raymond E Feist
"Dragons and Dicks" - Kevin Smith
Justice league was a fantastic film. I loved every minute of it.
Kevin: Amazon Prime Video has a separate app from the app that lets you shop on Amazon.com. Just FYI.
i bet all the extra smiles scenes are joss
Disney acquiring FOX... Firefly + Guardians of the Galaxy.
You just made me hard.
30:15 Morbius AND Blade...AND Punisher all started as Spiderman villains. Dont fight, your relationship is beautiful
Villain may of been a harsh word but the point is Kevin now knows a little more, and can appreciate Marcs idea!
THERE IS A GREEN LANTERN!!!!
