Eddy Van Halen was asked on Mtv in an interview about what makes rock music, and does it have to be a hard electric guitar. His answer was, Look at Led Zepplin, they are considered the best rock band ever and half their songs are acoustic.

This song is a great testament to Zeppelin's diversity.
Yes, that was Jimmy Page on backing vocals. I'm fairly certain it's the only song that we ever hear his singing voice on.

Jimmy added backing vocals on many tracks. So did JPJ and Bonham. Bonham had the best voice of the three. If you search: She Just Satisfies, you can hear a single Jimmy released in 1966 as a solo artist with Jimmy singing lead vocals.

Jimmy added backing vocals on Communication Breakdown, Good Times Bad Times, Whole Lotta Love (live), Thank You, What Is And What Should Never Be, Living Living Maid, Gallows Pole, Tangerine (live), That's The Way (live), Bron Yaur Stomp (live 1977), Tangerine (live), That's The Way (live), and The Ocean. I suspect he did background vocals on Southbound Suarez and Your Time Is Gonna Come, but I can't prove it. There were probably others too, but they are harder to confirm.

Thanks for mentioning JPJ because it sounds like you’re a fan like I am of his contributions and the color that he adds to the music. He’s criminally underrated and overlooked except by musicians who realize that Zeppelin wouldn’t have been Zeppelin without him. He’s a master bass player, but it goes way beyond that with all those keyboard parts, stringed instruments and pedals heard throughout their catalog (except on Presence lol). He makes up for it on In Through The Out Door because Page was all strung out and he had to step up, like it or lump it lol.

One of my favorite songs from Led Zeppelin. When Zeppelin formed, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were already seasoned studio musicians. They had the drive and talent for being experimental and innovative with music.

  • @hollowaylive7297
    @hollowaylive7297 Před rokem +16

To give you some insight into why they were so talented and so young, JPJ and JP were both studio musicians before LED Zeppelin formed. Jimmy Page had played on over 1700 albums by the time he formed Led Zeppelin at the age of 23. Also to note, back then songs were being loosely Recorded with just singles in mind with the expectation that Jimmy Page would add creative guitar work and not just play someone else stuff. Jimmy Page's brainchild built from his ideas to create a rock band was Led Zeppelin. Plant, being a huge Elvis fan helped give the band a swing blues base to build the endless Jimmy page sound permutations. Also, this was the period where the highest genre experimentation occurred. Jazz, funk, country, blues, rock, and folk are well represented by Zeppelin and by my calculations because of the 1700 albums Jimmy Page had experienced playing on. 10000 hours equal genius which Jimmy had surpassed before Led Zeppelin even formed. This can also be said about Jimi Hendrix Playing the Chittlin circuit of other music by the time he had advanced improv skills. the biggest difference being Page had more in-studio experience, and less live to produce more top-quality material which I believe Jimi was close on his heels by the time he died. Also, Led Zeppelin had great management where Jimi's was rotten which some argue was a catalyst for his death, as he was also being pressured to flip a buck by short-sighted opportunists. In addition, the advanced sound of Led Zeppelin came from huge analog recording desks running dozen of tubes and the release of a ton of experimental sound electronics that they were the first to use, all hand wired which makes the difference. Certainly, Jimi and Jimmy were perhaps the two best improv guitarists ever to play the electric guitar. I can tell you from experience, improv guitar carries the most emotional weight because of how tightly it is tied to your soul. Also, Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead should be mentioned, another rabbit hole to explore for instance China Cat Sunflower blends country, folk jazz, funk, and rock> Listen to the 72 europe live version.

Robert wrote this song for his wife and it was the first Zep song he wrote primarily himself. Jimmy had the "little drops of rain..." section and harmonizes with Robert on it. The rest didn't often sing with Robert but there are a few songs. Zep blended acoustic and electric guitar from their first album and their instrumentation is always top notch.

Zepplin would frequently take a break and play an acoustic set in the middle of their concerts. What makes the band so great is the flexibility. Jones and Paige played multiple instruments. Jones is a master on the mandolin and organ. Jimmy could play a wide variety of acoustic guitar with the touch of an angel. They would frequently weave traditional English folk music into a blues-rock fusion. The beginning of Stairway to Heaven is one example. Paige and Jones were originally studio musicians. Not the usual thump and bang garage bands that followed.

In a simple sense, they are just bringing us what we have experienced in our lives. Then again that's what all music does, right? Led Zeppelin brought us who listened, and reminded us of lovey-dovey
points of candor, in which we will proceed to press on to our loves, or to find our loves. The springtime
of our loves, smiles. I hope I got that right.

Yes what a beautiful song. That's zepp diversity. Sometimes john bonham or jimmy would do back up but not much. I do believe when you listen to Robert sing live he sounds like 2 people singing. Very original voice. The goats

I never knew or I forgot that there were two vocalists on this song. Love how you guys' comments and the responses they get point out new things to me about songs I've listened to a gazillion times.

Diversity like this in the first four tracks of their second album…. Just gives credence to their GOAT status.
Amazing that at this point in time the band was still not at their creative peak…different era and culture than today but transitions generations effortlessly….. that’s art my brothers…
Enjoy…. You got the ticket…. Now it’s time to take the ride

Trippy dippy hippie man! Led Zeppelin sprinkled hippie folk rock tunes over their first few albums. It was their way of keeping it real and inline with the times. "Thank You" ends side one. "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)" start off side two. It's another pair of songs without silence between them, so play them back to back if you can.
