I actually adore the moment in DEad apple when Dazai makes a joke like "Do I really seem such a good person?" and Atsushi genuinely responds "of course", which shocked Kyoka and Dazai.
Why did it shock kyouka? Did kyouka know how bad Dazai is?

No because this is so true. Lots of people make fun of Dazai for his struggles and use the scene where he shoots the dead body multiple times in edits to show how ‘crazy’ or ‘psycho’ he is, but did they even hear what he was saying? the light novel describes things so much better, I think that animating BSD makes it harder to understand, especially since you can glean lots of information from the artist’s unique style of eye shading showing morality.

After reading the manga and getting novel spoilers, dazai feels very far as if he's in a whole other world. His problems can't even be summarized into ''depression'' because of how complex he is. He has too much knowledge and no one knows what he was doing before he got into the port mafia. and there's also stuff like the beast universe and so many things.
So you mean Depression and Anxiety, coupled with isolating oneself from others because there's no one else that can even imagine what's going on inside of you...
Because that's pretty much metaphorical for being neurodivergent. Depression, especially when coupled with others mental health issues, is a bitch...
@@LadyMorgaine1976i don’t think dazai shows signs of being neurodivergent, i understand why some people may have inclinations to believe that but for 99% (not all becayse ei don’t wnat to generalise but an overwhelming majority) of people who are neurodivergent one of the biggest cues is not the same level of understanding with communication and understanding social cues, however with dazai he’s got an almost expert understanding of social interaction and which ways to act in certain situations to his advantage leading into his manipulative nature

@@LadyMorgaine1976 yea i did assume autism as that is a common label attached to dazai and if that was what you were referring to i was hoping to have a discussion over it because whenever i’ve asked anyone else that did genuinely believe dazai was autistic they never actually responded with a well thought out opinion. i’m sorry if i came off as ignorant as that was not the intention and i am very much aware that it is not just autism that falls under neurodivergent as i do have some of the disorders you kindly pointed out, however that is what majority people are actually referring to when they say neurodivergent.
I honestly loved this video! BUT as a huge fan of Dazai and Bungo Stray Dogs in general, I have to point out some mistakes that you unfortunately made:
- Dazai’s ability doesn’t erase his own existence - it nullifies other people’s abilities if he touches them
- we know absolutely nothing about Dazai’s childhood, so saying that he was an orphan is not correct (there’s even a fan theory that he may be a son/grandson of the previous boss), and Mori met Dazai as a doctor after his failed suicide attempt, he treated him and then used him as a witness to kill the previous boss in order to take his position in the mafia
- I doubt that Dazai actually regrets that he committed crimes in the past - according to Odasaku’s words, Dazai doesn’t care if he is in the light or in the dark

And if I remember well, in the beginning of the Light Novel Dazai, Chuuya, age fifteen, it has mentioned that Dazai was not an orphan
i’ve seen theories where dazai is just like his author counterpart and that he was originally named shuji and lived in a mansion but he then ran away from home because his maids were abusing him just like in no longer human but your exactly right we have no idea what his past is and i’m pretty sure asagiri said he wanted us to keep it in our imagination in the authors notes of stormbringer
Actually in one of the light novels it is stated that Dazai’s parents is still alive somewhere. So he isn’t an orphan canonically
But I can make assumptions that they weren’t the greatest considering he was a depressed suicidal 14yo who joined the mafia to find a reason to live. It rlly doesn’t make them look good
I agree with everything you've said except your last point. Yes, odasaku did say that but that was before he joined the Ada. As mentioned in the video and seen in the anime, Dazai has grown as a person and is different from his former self so we can't take odeasaku's words as proof that he doesn't feel regret towards his past crimes.

I've watched this anime for years, and how they deal with mental health is very realistic which is why I like it or rather, respect it.
In other shows, the depressed sad characters get "fixed" and go from then being okay.
Depression isn't like that.
Depression doesn't go away. You can only cope with it.
That's actually the qualm I have with many bsd fanfiction concerning Dazai's character building and development. Usually AO3 is fire, but in this case I mostly stick to asain websites, as they are often less fixated on "fixing"

Although I do agree with the fact that BSD is amazing at portraying depression. However I doubt the analysis on him is quite right? There are just a lot of facts that... never happened?
Dazai never actually talks about his own problems with anyone except Odasaku. Although even that conversation is more for Oda's sake then Dazai's.
Dazai is a realistic portray of depression maybe exactly because of the walls he had built around himself. He is a character that is cannonicaly described as someone you cannot understand by various characters. On the top of my head by Akutagawa in the cannibalism arc, Oda and Hirotsu in dark Era light novel: "No one can tell what Dazai fancies or detests, what he will approve of or denounce."
Dazai never actually said anything about feeling worthless, blaming himself or anything like that. And we didn't have much inner monologs from this character.
What we do know is that Dazai doesn't see himself as a changed man (Dead apple). He regards his current situation as an act and that he himself has still remained that same person to whom good or bad does not matter.
Bungou Stray Dogs is a great portreal of different characters struggling with themselves, but it is not about overcoming mental illness. It simply shows a glimpse of the burden it puts on those it affects. None of the characters involved seek help in any way, on the contrary Dazai's suicide attempts are constantly overlooked. Kunikida straight up tells Atsushi that he isn't here to listen to sob stories.
In the mafia the situation is described as follows "In the mafia, no one will look at what’s in their colleagues. This is an unspoken rule. They will not open up the lid over one’s chest to look at their heart and comment at the darkness stuffed within. This is a merit of the mafia."
Bsd takes place in a world that just came back from the great war. Everyone has their inner demons to fight with and as such the struggle of the individual is often overlooked. It's a world in which the more you learn about it, the more you understand that each and every character is fighting for themselves. Even the characters you would think are one dimensional at first. Every single one of them has a story. One that shaped them as they are now.
"People exist to save themselves" really is a perfect quote to describe this anime.
Its realistic and brilliant. But not because of the reasons mentioned in this video

That's right, you articulated it perfectly and I completely agree with you. Many things said about Dazai in this video are not facts backed by actual scenes or things characters said, but rather added interpretations that were never actually adressed in the story. Dazai's analysis where arguments are invented isn't actually to the point

Not gonna lie, this was like, the worst video with such a click-bait title that I've ever watched about Bungou Stray Dogs. I recognize that it had good intentions, but the way it used the story to explain certain points was poor and fairly inaccurate. The title is misleading when it attempts to talk about Dazai most of the time, when Dazai's mental illness is the one that's least reflected on (most portrayed, though) in comparison to Atsushi or Kyouka. This video pretty much only addresses depression and never expands on other illnesses. In fact, I'm almost completely sure that this video used certain elements of BSD fanfiction to defend itself with how inaccurate it is.
Personally, I have never seen Dazai's depression as a sense of worthlessness and inadequacy, but instead, more of a sense of apathy and silent misery. Unlike what the video claims that Dazai feels like he is a burden on everyone around him, Dazai actually never seems to express this thought process at all? In fact, he seems to enjoy being an annoyance to other people, specifically Kunikida and Chuuya, and acknowledges that he does have a place in the ADA.
This video fails to address how Dazai's entire personality in the current timeline centers around being a jokester, the masking he does to maintain a light-hearted appearance. Despite having developed bonds with other agency members, none of them take Dazai's attempts or chats about committing with a beautiful woman that seriously, which is clearly evident within the first few chapters/episodes of the manga/anime.

I'd like to refute several points from this video, one being at 7:10 where the video claims that Dazai "confesses his feelings of inadequacy and that he is a burden to those around him" and that Atsushi responds that "he is valuable." This never happened. The clip that the video is using is Atsushi asking Dazai about what he should do now that his abuser, the headmaster, is dead. And to my knowledge, nowhere else in the series has Dazai ever mentioned feeling inadequate or useless, in all the light novels, manga, and anime.
The closest the series may have gotten to stating this (and I seriously doubt the creator read this far to in the manga) is chapter 77, where Dazai tells Fyodor that they are both scheming individuals who still end up in prison despite all their strategies, while those who actually make a difference are the ones who "scream in the storm of uncertainty. Before the strength of a soul like that, [they] can only be paralyzed with wonder" (this quote is also said in the second trailer for season 4). Dazai makes this statement not to highlight his inadequacy, but to tell Fyodor that their strategies only work because people choose to follow them in addition to their own paths, and there is no God who directs everyone into a route of perfection in harmony.
Instead of feeling inadequate, Dazai believes that life itself has no meaning and is not worth living (Fifteen light novel).

Ultimately, Dazai has never truly poured out his thought process on why he wants to die or why he is depressed to anyone; instead, readers are left to the analysis of others' views on Dazai to try to understand him. It seems that Oda got close to understanding, and Dazai did tell Atsushi why before in the light novel 55 Minutes, but Atsushi forgot. Overall, there has never been a single light novel that is explicitly written from Dazai's perspective, nor are there any scenes that delve that deep into his thought processes.
Similarly, Dazai has never explicitly stated that he views his ability, 'No Longer Human' (which directly translated actually fits 'Human Disqualification' more closely) as a curse, nor does it cause death and destruction (which was mentioned at 4:42). In fact, Dazai seems very unbothered by his ability and his twisted morals are more focused on his lacking reason to live.
Reading No Longer Human can help people gain some insight on the real Osamu Dazai's thoughts. NLH is a very miserable look into depression and is a much better explanation for Dazai's emotional detachment, rather than how the video attempts to romanticize Dazai's depression with the people around him as saviors who support him and himself as a tragic protagonist.
The claim that BSD Dazai views his ability as a curse is a pretty popular fanfic trope, as is Dazai having an actual conversation with other people though... so....

A large motif in Bungou Stray Dogs is "finding a reason to live". For Atsushi, it's to save people, which was taught to him by the orphanage headmaster. In "Herurisu!; Portrait of a Father", Dazai makes a point that the orphanage headmaster's actions are reprehensible and unforgivable, but that hell still raised Atsushi to be a good person. This is explained much better in the manga because Akutagawa actually also shows up in that manga chapter, and notes that while Dazai is Akutagawa's mentor, the headmaster is Atsushi's mentor. And even after this episode/chapter, Atsushi is not just "fine" from one scene of closure. He still envisions the headmaster and the abuse still haunts him even though his abuser is dead (Cannibalism Arc), showing how mental illness cannot be solved so easily.
Akutagawa's dependency on Dazai's acknowledgement is his reason to live, as stated in chapter 87 that he "fears dying with Dazai-san's acceptance". Kyouka wishes to redeem herself, Chuuya lives for his friends and to affirm his humanity, etc etc. These are pretty surface level reasons that definitely don't explain their entire motivations, but Dazai's motive is the most curious.

Dazai actually doesn't join the Armed Detective Agency out of some sense of remorse or guilt for his previous actions in the Port Mafia (nor does he ever express remorse for those actions ever, actually). He is not a perfectly redeemed character, and his entire reason for joining the agency is because of Oda. I want to specifically quote this from the light novel "Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era" with a closer analysis:
Oda: “You told me if you put yourself in a world of violence and bloodshed, you might be able to find a reason to live…”
Dazai: “Yeah, I said that. I did. But what difference does that-?”
Oda: “You won’t find it. You should know that. Whether you’re on the side that takes lives or the side that saves them, nothing beyond your own expectations will happen. Nothing in this world can fill the hole that is your loneliness. You will wander the darkness for eternity."
Oda has never said that saving people would give Dazai a reason to live.
"That was when Dazai first realized: Sakunosuke Oda understood him much more than he’d ever imagined-right up to his very heart, almost to the center of his mind. Dazai didn’t realize until then that someone had known him so well. For the first time in his life, Dazai wanted from the bottom of his heart to know something. He asked the man before him: 'Odasaku… What should I do?'"
Instead:
Oda: “If both sides are the same, then choose to become a good person. Save the weak, protect the orphaned. You might not see a great difference between right and wrong, but… saving others is something just a bit more wonderful."
Why does Oda say this? Because Oda knows what it's like to go from a life of killing to pacifism. Because Oda has a lot of blood on his hands and chose to walk away from that.

Again, I think this video could have saved itself a little if it addressed Atsushi a little more. Atsushi's journey with (what the video attempts to whittle down to as PTSD) the headmaster is a complex one that is rarely explored in stories dealing with abuse: one where the abuse "works". The series has never claimed that the abuse was righteous in any way, both in canon and in the Beast AU light novel, but it does acknowledge that Atsushi did not let it destroy himself.
And that's a large part of this series, what to do with what you are given in life. From main characters like Atsushi, Kyouka, and Akutagawa to smaller characters like Aya and Shousaku, they all took the hand they were dealt and made decisions.
I'm a little upset that this video tried to explain Dazai's life philosophy in such a poor manner, and I encourage people to read the light novels, specifically Dark Era and Dazai, Chuuya, 15, to gain more insight on his character and why he joined the Port Mafia. The anime did adapt these light novels in S2 and S3, but not perfectly.
Bungou Stray Dogs is an emotionally complex series once you decide to get into it, and I'm glad with how it chooses to deal with such dark topics (hell I could write more essays on the Beast AU or the impacts of The Great War). I have a lot more to say, but I didn’t know CZcams has a 10k char comment limit.
I'm glad that the video at least acknowledged that there is no simple cure or easy way to deal with depression. But this topic is so much more than *just* depression, and there were much better ways and more research should have been done before making such a bold claim that "This Anime Portrays Mental Health PERFECTLY".
TL;DR: I didn't like the video, and it's wrong in a lot of places. Good effort though, I guess.
Furthermore, I hope that people commenting on how good this video is don't just like it because "there's a lack of discussion about BSD so I think this person is definitely right" without actually paying attention to what the video says.
You can have lots of analysis be bad, and also have little analysis that is amazing. Please don't take this video as holy scripture or whatever because you don't feel like seeking out actually decent analysis that is out there on the internet.

This!! I am actually surprised people think that this is a good video. Not only the analysis but basic facts are wrong. What he explained is such a textbook explanation of depression that fails to describe to describe Dazai. I love BSD and I do wish there was more discussion on the themes of BSD other than ships and headcanons. But this is not it.
Lord, thank you for putting most of my thoughts into words. I was really excited to see this video at first because it's the first time I've EVER seen an analysis video for BSD's complex, sensitive subject matter like this, and I do think the creator had good intentions and I agree with some of what's said ~to a degree~ , but also, holy shit, I seriously thought I was drunk or high when he started describing scenes or concepts that _straight up never happened_ (Dazai believing his ability to be a curse?? Seeing Atsushi as a younger version of himself??? the Ango conversation??? The Dazai and Atsushi bench conversation??? WERE WE EVEN WATCHING THE SAME SHOW).
While my own personal read on Dazai is that, yes, an aspect of his depression is that he feels like he cannot and doesn't deserve to connect with or be around others, hence while he constantly acts like an annoying jokester in order to intentionally push people away from him so they don't try to get close to him and force him to be vulnerable (there are a few scenes, mostly in Wan and in the drama cd, where someone shows kindness or appreciation towards him and he doesn't know how to react to it or accept it, because he's not used to being cared for and actively tries to brush it off), it is soooo much more than just that, as you said; Dazai's issues are a combination of being too smart, causing nothing to be interesting or satisfying to him, an apathetic/nihilistic view of the world, and being amoral, and mental health issues and being raised in a toxic environment from ages 14 to 18 that intentionally preyed on and exacerbated said issues (by which I mean, Mori did) all just compounded and made his situation infinitely worse. There's also the fact of whatever unknown trauma he suffered in his past pre-mafia that made him believe that he's destined to lose everything he ever tries to hold onto and thus there is nothing worth prolonging a life of suffering to attain, as he says in Dark Era. I would also add that, although Dazai doesn't mind or think anything of his ability himself in-universe, on a meta level, it being an anti-ability and called what it is is a symbolic representation of how inhuman he acts and feels, and Dazai is probably very touch-starved even if unconsciously, so symbolically his ability being one that takes away the safety or comfort of others is just another representation of how isolated and inhuman he is.
Although I do think Dazai does harbor some amount of guilt for how he treated Akutagawa and so is trying to do better with Atsushi (when he acknowledges that Atsushi's own abuse was unforgivable but made him stronger, he's clearly speaking from his own experience with Akutagawa), he definitely does not really feel remorse for his actions in the mafia as a whole, and imo his struggles to feel like he fits in with the ADA are more related to how he feels inhuman and amoral, and his desire to be the good man Oda wished for him to be and uncertainty if he can live up to those perceived expectations. Oda knew that Dazai would always be the way he is, and that nothing could "fix" that like Dazai was desperately trying to by looking for stimulation in a world of violence and bloodshed, but he validated who Dazai was and validated that things would always be painful for him, but told him that even so, being on the side of good would be a little better for him, because he knew from the same experience how rewarding that life was. He understood that things would always be hard for him and did not expect Dazai to be perfect in his new life (because he himself was very, very flawed, contrary to his ability name), but imo Dazai now is always trying to keep Oda alive in a way by carrying on his legacy through himself and the people that he saves like Atsushi, yet is constantly struggling because his journey towards healing is constantly marred with setbacks where he's forced to revert back to his older, more destructive mafia habits and tendencies, due to all the things happening in the manga plot.
That being said, he still has made subtle, but noticeable progress in the manga, namely in the two conversations with Fyodor in the alley and in the prison like you mentioned, where he states in so many words that he's begun to appreciate weak, struggling, ordinary humans, because they are the ones who truly make the world turn and they are the ones to be admired, not the schemers like himself and Fyodor, which is in direct contrast to his much more nihilistic outlook when he was younger, and in contrast to Fyodor's holier-than-thou view of himself vs others (since Fyodor is a direct foil to Dazai). Even as recently as the newest chapter from a week ago, he tells Sigma that he's just an ordinary human and not someone supernaturally intelligent. All of this speaks volumes of how Dazai's views of himself and the people around him have changed, and how he's begun to feel connected with his fellow found family members, and how their influence has been affecting him.
All in all, Dazai's struggles are not _just_ from typical depression, but a large factor of things unique to Dazai and his circumstances; he is a very complex and mysterious character and a lot of how one reads him is subjective, all of that was just my takes, but a lot of things are also clearly established if you just pay attention enough, and it's irritating how this video seems to boil him down to just surface-level platitudes and "backing" them up with things that didn't even occur in the source material. Yes, BSD _does_ handle mental health wonderfully, but with far, far more nuance, sensitivity, complexity, and depth than this guy portrays; the anime is a bad adaptation that fails to capture so many of the manga and light novels' nuances, but god, even _I_ understood what Dark Era was trying to say about Dazai, Oda, and its messages in general far better than him in the anime alone, long before I even read the manga and the Dark Era ln (and the Dark Era arc in the anime was what made me truly fall in love with BSD in the first place, so I'm glad it exists, even if I wish it were so much better). Each and every character has their own struggles and issues and the manga/novels portray all of them realistically, with no character reacting to similar kinds of trauma in the same way, which is how it is in real life. BSD is so terribly underrated and it's depressing (no pun intended) to me that there's so little actual good and thoughtful analysis of the source material across the internet, and absolutely none on youtube; it's high time this series got the proper acknowledgement and discussion it deserves, instead of the rampant surface-level shipping, which makes up the large majority of the (still little in comparison to other fandoms) content. Again, I was really excited when I saw this video, and I know this guy probably meant well, but this is mostly just a really watered down/romanticized/sanitized examination of Dazai and BSD as a whole, with some of the information here just being straight-up fabricated. 🫠 😬 We can do better. Bungou Stray Dogs deserves better. 💔
If you think the anime did it well then I assure you that the manga and the light novels did so much better than the anime. bones removed multiple important scenes for all characters from LN and manga.

Bsd twt was roasting this video alive and I can see why omg, you got a LOT of stuff wrong in this. Dazai is essentially an enigma, lots of information in this video has not been confirmed at all. Neither has some of it even been implied??

Dazai has to be one of my favorite characters of all time, I checked out some of the real Osamu Dazai's books (I've read The Schoolgirl, No Longer Human, The Setting Sun, & Pandora's Box) and the emotion and connections I felt to the characters and plots were unreal and a few even made me cry. The fact that Dazai (bsd) was based off of the man who wrote them made me feel like I knew too much, and I felt lots of pity for his character. Great video and character analysis :)

The purpose of this comment is to point out the inaccuracies, though I have stated my own opinion on some matters since the manga is nowhere near complete and we have very limited information on Dazai, especially his backstory. You're free to interpret his character however you want.
My comment isn't necessarily meant to attack the creator, but I think he should've done proper research before making this.
Going in, I have to say that this video is VERY inaccurate. I'm bewildered so many people agreed with it because they either did not pay attention to the video or the show itself. Bsd has been one of my hyper fixations for a while now, and I've consumed most of the content including the anime, manga and most of the light novels (not to mention the number of times I've also reread them) so hopefully I didn't miss any inaccuracies!
0:43 Dazai's ability, No Longer Human, does NOT erase his, or others' existence. It nullifies other abilities through physical contact.
I watched this video at first without audio and had to rely on auto-generated captions, but I was more than shocked when I realised it wasn't even the captions problem.
2:00 Chuuya is NOT his friend. In fact, they have despised each other ever since their first meeting and even have each other's names in their dislike section on the character introduction panel. The interaction mentioned in the video also never happened.
EDIT: I don't think they ENTIRELY despise each other, but that doesn't mean there isn't SOME level of hate there. There are so many interactions between them that show they DO care for each other somewhat, but their partnership is so complicated it can't be described so simply. I don't want to say they 'love' or 'hate' each other. You can see flaws in a person while still appreciating them. It's just like how the Decay of Angels are the 'villains' in the manga, but you don't label them as evil because they each have their own reasons and may not be entirely evil. It's the same concept as that. Not everything is black and white.
2:50 There is no mention anywhere in the series (to my knowledge) that Dazai feels that his ability is a curse, or he thinks he's a burden to others. In fact, that's Atsushi's mindset due to his trauma with the orphanage director (for example: in one of the earlier chapters, Atsushi left the ADA because he thought he was a burden to them and they wouldn't be able to protect themselves against the mafia). Though it's possible Dazai may really feel this way too, he has never admitted to it or implied it.
3:00 To say Dazai sees Atsushi as a younger version of himself is inaccurate (he has never said that before, and I honestly don't think those two are that similar). In my opinion, Dazai would see himself in Akutagawa more. His reasoning for hiring Atsushi was most likely because of Oda's wish for him to save people (and the orphans Oda took care of when he was alive).
3:21 This is NOT canon, this is a fan theory. We know nothing about Dazai's backstory before Mori. The earliest thing we know about him is in the recently adapted Fifteen manga, Dazai and Mori met when he attempted to commit suicide, and Mori asked for Dazai to witness the previous boss' will. Saying Dazai was orphaned and had to fend for himself is just false.
4:09 This did not happen. Dazai has never admitted to feeling jealous of Ango, and I highly doubt he is considering his hatred for the man. In the scene where Ango was in the hospital (Chapter 33 in the manga), Dazai was bargaining with Ango to let Kyouka live in exchange for his treatment from Yosano.
Dazai also has never opened up fully to anyone. He does not let anyone know his true thoughts, and the few times he opened up were to Oda. He and Ango were friends, but they were never as close as Dazai was to Oda. And now after Ango's betrayal, their relationship is strained. I doubt Dazai would open up to a man he detests.
4:45 Again, it is never mentioned anywhere that Dazai sees his ability as a curse.
This is mostly my opinion, but Dazai does NOT feel guilty, nor is he tormented by the crimes he committed in the Port Mafia. He lacks empathy towards most things and does not see any reason to live rather than wanting to die. The only reason why he left PM was because of Oda's wish when he died, which was for Dazai to be on the side of the good. Oda stated Dazai would never find a reason to live, so at least he could be on the side of the good and save people. Dazai left in respect of his only friend's dying wish, he did not leave because he felt guilty over any of the deaths he caused. He might have learned to feel guilty after he left, but he did not originally leave out of guilt. If Oda never told him to leave, he probably would've remained in the PM and become the boss (similar to what happened in BEAST).
EDIT: I'm not saying Dazai lacks ANY sort of empathy, but he doesn't care nor show emotion for most things (mostly towards human life, which is what I'm trying to say here). There are a few times he has shown emotion, especially Oda's death. He does not cry, but Oda is obviously an important person to him. A small detail I can add is in the anime's season 3 ending: at some point, there are multiple scenes of characters crying, the only scene where someone isn't explicitly crying is Dazai, but it can be implied he is crying (which would be understandable since his close friend died).
4:58 The organisation did not exactly use him, considering Dazai willingly joined the mafia when he was 15 in hopes of finding a reason to live. At that time, he thought "he might be able to find one in a place that embraces death as a part of everyday life instead of being pushed away". (Quote from Fifteen)
My personal opinion again: Dazai does not think he doesn't deserve to live, he doesn't SEE the point of living. There's a difference between wanting to die and not wanting to live. He is not tormented by the deaths he caused, it doesn't affect him.

BSD is NOT about mental health. It is not the main plot line nor is it explicitly said that any of the characters suffer from it (however it is definitely heavily implied. Atsushi is the most obvious example, but that does not mean the other characters do not suffer as well).

I want to say that the way this video talks about mental health and depression (since it is honestly the only one mentioned in this entire video) is the textbook definition and only covers the surface level. Depression is so much more than that because it is connected to the human mind and is very complex. Humans are not one-dimensional beings, and our way of thinking differs from everyone else due to many factors.
I would not say BSD depicts mental health perfectly. It is definitely not the best one as there are many better ones out there. Mental health isn't even the main point of the series. Dazai is not the only one who has issues with BSD, and there are so many other characters that struggle with their mental health that isn't talked about enough.
The reason why this video pisses me off so much, and why I spent my time typing this comment is because of the amount of misinformation in this video. I can acknowledge the video had good intentions, sure, but you do not need to make stuff up. There are so many CANON aspects that you could've used and it could've been a decent analysis video. Hell, you could've talked about Atsushi, or literally any other character that has just as much depth and struggles just as much as Dazai does.

Thank you so much for taking the time to type all this. I totally agree, bsd is not a bad show but it certainly not that good at depicting mental illness. As someone who’s experienced mental illness before irl, I’ve seen other shows that’s done wayy better.
I agree with much of what you said, save for one thing: I don't think Dazai lacks empathy. I believes he has quite a bit of it, it's just damaged and warped due to some trauma that has yet to be explored, this exemplified by two scenes, one echoing the other: The first scene is when Ango leaves after he's discovered to be a double agent, and Dazai says everything he ever finds worth holding onto, he eventually loses, and he states life isn't worth having to go through all that, this scene exemplified by 1) the scene where he senses what Oda is about to do (a suicide mission to take down the guy who killed the orphans) and tries to convince him not to give up his life, and 2) when he reaches for Oda to stop him, but Oda walks out, just within his reach, just something else he tried holding onto that he loses. Also, he shouts at Oda to stay, which is a HUGE deal, as Dazai, from what I remember in the anime so far, NEVER got emotional like that. I believe he is depressed, sad, and dealing with immense emptiness that he assuages thanks to the people around him but that he also must constantly deal with and cannot, at least for now, get rid of. But his empathy is there, it's just damaged, a consequence, again, of some loss that he alluded to but didn't elaborate on.

I’d like to gently remind everyone that the character Dazai Osamu is based off the author, Dazai Osamu.
He actually idolized Ryonosuke Akutagawa (the author, this is reversed in the anime) and when his idol committed suicide, he fell into deep depression. In college, he tried committing suicide for the first time. This failed, but it only led to more suicide attempts. When he graduated from college, he pursued higher education, but eventually his decaying mental health stopped him from studying. He developed a drinking problem and sometimes hired prostitutes.
When he pursued a relationship with a Geisha, his aristocratic family disapproved and disowned him. He left the relationship.
After his disownment, he tried committing suicide with a hostess he met in a bar. He lived, the woman did not.
This second suicide attempt brought his family back, and they helped him get back on his feet. He eventually found the geisha again and got married to her.
He was once again disowned from his family when he associated himself with the Japanese Communist Party. Because parties like this were banned, he went into hiding. His family reached out to him and offered that they would (financially) support him if he went back to finish his degree and stayed away from the communists. He agreed, and kept this promise.
While in University, he was mentored by Masuji Ibuse, and he spent his time writing. He was able to publish his works with the help of his mentor. He was also able to meet more people in the literary community through his mentor.
Even though he worked hard, he realized he had problems that got in the way of his graduation. Because he thought he couldn’t graduate, and his failure to land a job, he tried to commit suicide for the third time. He wrote a piece titled “The Final Years” and proceeded to hang himself. He once again failed in dying.
Unrelated to the attempt, Dazai’s mental health worsened. Because of appendicitis, he started taking medication. He became addicted to Pabinal. For the next year, he fought his addiction, but mostly lost. The people around him decided to put him in an institution to help him with his drug use.
His wife became unfaithful. She cheated on him with his closest friend. When he confronted her, the both tried to commit suicide by overdosing. It failed, and they divorced.
He soon married another woman, a teacher. This marriage helped him. The next few years were peaceful, and though he still wrote grim works, they were subdued.
Through Japan’s post-war rehabilitation, Dazai’s work became popular. He wrote a book titled “The Setting Sun”, heavily influenced by the diary of Shizuko Ota, who wrote about her experiences after the war. They had an affair, and Shizuko gave birth to his illegitimate child.
His mental health deteriorated rapidly after his mistress gave birth. His health was also not the best, as he had tuberculosis. He became an alcoholic, and abandoned both his wife and his mistress.
His last relationship was with a woman named Tome Yamazaki. During this marriage, he wrote his last work, “No Longer Human”. Shortly after, he drowned himself with his wife in a river near their house.
That’s it. I’ve heard rumors that he may have been sexually abused in his childhood, but I’m not sure how accurate they are.
After reading No Longer Human myself. He seemed to have based the book off of his own life. So it’s pretty likely he got sexually abused

I sometimes ask myself if Fifteen isn't somehow, indirect or not, connected to his crush on a male classmate when he (the author) was 15, too. After all, even if not in a romantic way, Chuuya (the character) is a meaningful person to the character Dazai, even if he denies it.

Dazai Osamu may have wrote a little bit about himself onto Yozo Oba in terms of thoughts. But their is nothing confirming that he was sexually abused.

This series does that so well. For me it really helps me connect with them all, even the villains in some cases.

I've been a fan of Bungo Stray Dogs for a few years and I'm glad it's getting recognized more often. It isn't just Dazai that cements himself as a realistic depiction of a depressed man, but there's Atsushi (the protagonist) who suffers from tremendous PTSD and anxiety after growing out of an abusive orphanage. There are others as well who have some level of disorders. I find Atsushi's to be a hugely realistic representation of PTSD, as it pops up in nearly every episode, because he can never truly get rid of the anxiety surrounding it. Hell, in the movie a major subplot is learning to accept himself as his inability to control his self-hate manifests as the tiger. There's even a chapter where Atsushi's abuser dies, and Dazai tells him that he doesn't need to forgive anyone from what happened at the orphanage. I think Dazai's depression is really strong too as the video states.
As silly and weird as the anime is, it's a genuine treasure and all the villains are balanced wonderfully. It plays into the philosophical psychology of different societies (whether it be the Guild representing America's wealth or just the general divide of power in Yokohama) and different mindsets of any character. If anyone does plan to get into it, do know that it takes a whole lot of chapters/Season 1 to actually pick up the pace, as they use a lot of introduction time to establish main conflicts. Not the best anime but ABSOLUTELY my favorite of all time. I highly recommend it to psychology and literature nerds... since all the characters are named after authors lmao.
The characters are also based off of the personalities of the real authors and the main and sometimes side characters of the titles of their abilities which are directly from book the authors have written :)

I kin Dazai, and relate to atsushi's trauma... And Kyouka to such an extent. So let it be known BSD helped me understand what I'm going through and find hope that even someone as broken as me could continue living
I would like to point out though that Dazai felt like an alien to the world. He doesn't understand why people want to live, which is something that i personally nstruggle with. He's also cynical of the world. Thinking that everything he'll ever want, once he gets it will be taken from him. Be it comfort, joy or a friend who truly understands him. It's such a deep show. Though i am not sure he thinks himself a burden to others, or that he is a danger to them. I agree that him being surrounded by the ADA really does help him.
Fun fact, in 55 minutes it was revealed that the ADA had a contingency plan in case Dazai experiences a near death situation. Find yourself friends who genuinely want you around, and would think of plans to keep you alive when you yourself struggle to 🥺

dazai has been a big part of my life recently, with me reading his real-life counterpart's novels and starting the anime during the pandemic, seeing you cover this series and more importantly this realistic depiction of mental illness had me up until 4 am, the time that i'm writing this. his alienation and coping mechanisms hit close to home especially realizing that in the end, we're all human. dazai doesn't believe this (but truly wants to), and he goes all-out just to prove he has a heart, a reason to live. even the opening song of season two, reason living by screen mode, truly represents dazai himself along with so many other members of the cast;
"So hard I try, I cannot find
The reason for me to live my life"
in season three, he is asked by ogai why he truly wants to die, and he responds by asking if there really is a point to living. this scene along with so many others during the "15" and "dark era" arcs were really important to his character development, and now, in more recent events, dazai has turned a new page to his story and, quoting another set of verses from reason living,
"...realized
How to start again"
the continuous mention of dazai's renewal (while still referencing the quote "old habits die hard") in all four seasons and light novels hit really close to home, knowing that although he was a horrible person in the past (he has mentioned this in the anime) he can change for the greater good, and that, to me, is beautiful. after all, we're only human.

The small ways in which Dazai improves (Slowly, step by step...) are shown in the symbolisms of his bandages... The better he gets, the less bandages he has.
One crucial point in Dazai finding another reason to go on, was meeting (and pretty much mentoring) Atsushi. That's when the bandage over his right eye comes off permanently (A "seeing things from a different light", if you will).
When he was with the Port Mafia, he was almost covered in them. (hiding himself, closing himself off to the world, mainly because of what he had to do there)
No, Dazai was out of the bandages over his eye long before meeting Atsushi. No one ever says anything, and in Dazai’s entrance exam, he has both eyes showing. Just wanted to point out that Oda removed the bandages over his eye and once he left PM, he discarded that one bandage. All the others have stayed.

2) we don’t know his backstory before fifteen yet
3) not really lack of self worth(though it certainly is a factor), but lack of empathy and connection (due to his intelligence and skewed moral compass). The only person to ever come close was Oda, hence the close bond they had and the realization they shared during Oda’s last moments.
4) I doubt he really regretted his actions, since Dazai doesn’t seem to really have the “standard moral compass”. Light and dark are the same to him, and he became a part of ada bc of Oda’s suggestion.

bsd has the some of the most realistic characters, that people are complex than one single personality trait
Building off of this, I really love how Kafka accurately portrays the very real cycle of abuse. Dazai, during his port mafia years, abused Akutagawa and broke him mentally at a young age, leaving him an insecure wreck who could not function properly without Dazai's approval. This, in turn, resulted in Akutagawa becoming what Dazai was to him towards Kyoka. Akutagawa not only wanted to get power and control back in his life, but become the very thing he hated and adored in the process. This is a very real occurrence with people who have untreated trauma, especially in instances of power struggles like Dazai and Akutagawa. Additionally, in cases where he is reminded of this abuse, Dazai as a whole or the fact that he was replaced, he has very realistic reactions to that of an abuse victim (ex: the battle between him and Atsushi on the boat in season 1). Throughout the course of the manga, we watch Akutagawa slowly develop a sense of self as well as deal with trauma appropriately rather than through blind violence in order to prove he's strong. Furthermore, Akutagawa attempts to reconcile with Kyoka (albeit, very briefly), acknowledging that he was too harsh towards her and is happy she's doing better. As an abuse survivor myself, I wholeheartedly adore Akutagawa's character as he truly is the unfortunate reality of not only some survivors, but also the reality of not seeking help.
This is SO much misinformation it's CRAZY.
Dazai is NOT an orphan, this was never confirmed in any episode, chapter or light novel. If anything, in "The day I picked up Dazai" outright TELLS us he wasn't orphaned. Dazai also wasn't picked up from the streets, he attempted suicide and Mori was his doctor. He was also never pressured in the Port Mafia, the boss was literally scared of him.
IF YOU DON'T READ THE LIGHT NOVELS, DON'T TALK ABOUT THINGS YOU'RE NOT SURE OF !!! The anime is HORRIBLE compared to the anime, it ruined his entrance exam, and so much more about his character. You cannot speak a lot of his character if you've only watched the anime.

If you want to understand characters, you HAVE to read the manga and light novels. And no, the anime isn't good. Yes the art style is beautiful and I personally find the fisheyes and turtle smiles to be charming, but that's not it. The point is that it's not correctly adapted, and all the IMPORTANT details are left out - Tachihara's inner conflict was poorly executed in the anime, Sigma's backstory AND introduction were COMPLETELY skipped over, etc etc. The anime is a horrible adaptation period

I don't have enough words to express my appreciation for this video. Because you see, Bungou Stray Dogs saved me - and still saves - from suicide. Seeing all their struggles, all their willpower and how they carry on despite their suffering, has inspired me so much. I'm still deeply depressed and I do suffer from PTSD too, so I can see a piece of me in several characters, specially Dazai. I also have yet to find my reason to live. I really wanted to be more confident like Chuuya, who also used to struggle about his identity. Have you read Storm Bringer? You can analyze plenty of Chuuya's mental health there. It's brutal, yet quite interesting.
I've always loved books. After I came to know BSD, my literary world opened up a lot more. For that, I am also thankful.
By the way, I just wanted to correct:
- "No Longer Human" erases other abilities, not his existence.
- We know for sure Dazai has been with Mori since he was 14-15. Before that, we still do not know how things used to be.
Dazai's my favorite character, especially to do character study with. Asagiri (the author) is one of my favorite writers and I admire him so much, since he writes stories like Bungo Stray Dogs so well. Especially characters and plot and how to attract readers. Dazai's so interesting and I find him not only relatable but also so mysterious. Everything about him is both known and unknown, and I think his thought process is such a fascinating thing to experiment with and study. I love this show and especially Dazai.

Nobody knows what Dazai's childhood was like yet. His ability nullifies other people's abilities and doesn't actually hurt them let alone kill them.
this is so inaccurate i actually thought it was satire. not only were there many assumptions made about dazai (they were incorrect), but this video completely glosses over the full complexity of bungou stray dogs and its portrayal of mental illness. i mean no offense but to claim that this is a "perfect portrayal of mental illness" and then go on to misinterpret everything or even make up things that didn't happen is... disappointing to say the least. long comment incominggg
the extreme focus on only dazai while still getting his reasons for being suicidal wrong was. certainly something. he has never indicated that he is lonely, or that he feels guilty/like a bad person. as someone who has analyzed him for years and If You're Up To Date On The Manga you would know that he does not regret anything. he does not feel bad for hurting people, he did not join the ADA because he wanted to be a good person, and odasaku said it himself: dazai does not care what side he is on. in fact, he continues to actively cause harm to akutagawa, and the bit about him "protecting" atsushi/his coworkers was also just wildly incorrect. dazai actively puts everyone in danger and does not feel bad or like a "burden". he causes trouble on purpose (pushing atsushi towards a gunman, manipulating akutagawa into hating atsushi, etc).
dazai's reason for being depresssed is unknown, but we also cannot just chalk it up to depression. he shows many signs of neurodivergence in the form of autism or personality disorders; even emphasizing his "traumatic backstory" while not mentioning the high likelihood of a dissociative disorder or ptsd is bad research. being suicidal is not only a symptom of depression, but of many many other disorders. focusing on just that and barely brushing over the excellent trauma representation that is atsushi and akutagawa is just. Man.
as someone who relates to dazai heavily, nothing about this depression is loneliness or missing someone. it is the inability to find meaning in the act of living, and not knowing why you have to live for the sake of other people's happiness at the prolonging of your own suffering. it is apathy and isolation. he does not open up to others or improve, and the only ones who ever understood him were odasaku and maaybe kinda chuuya. i will not say that atsushi has no positive effects on dazai, but atsushi's presence alone is not the "support" that dazai needs. depression isn't all "im putting myself in danger because i'm suicidal" but can definitely be "i am hurting myself on purpose to finally feel Something".
as a mental health advocate and someone who likes analyzing bsd characters, this was kind of painful to watch. i don't think i even have the brain power to discuss it all because i couldn't find anything that seemed correct in the video. it was just like reading a generic description of depression and then making up things about dazai to make it apply. mental illness comes in many different forms and the one discussed in the video was not accurate. at least i got a laugh out of "his friend chuuya".

This video is poorly researched. A major part of Dazai is that he’s mysterious, he’s not someone who shows that he’s blatantly depressed. A lot of quotes you talked about, like with Chuuya, Atsushi, and Ango, never happened. You explained it as if Atsushi’s the mentor and not Dazai. That scene you showed with Atsushi and Dazai was actually Dazai telling him “Usually one cries when their father dies” reflecting how Dazai felt about Oda. The only character he was more opened with, not completely but definitely more than others, was with Oda, an important character in Dazai’s life, and someone who you didn’t mention. And when did he say that he felt guilty about his ability? Basically a lot of Dazai’s struggle is nuanced, not blatant. I agree that BSD does a great job with mental health, just not because of the fake reasons you gave.
If you haven’t, and I really don’t think you have, read No Longer Human by the real Dazai. It gives a lot of insight on who the character is based on and can help you be more accurate in analyzing. Also, if you haven’t either, read the manga. It’s enjoyable and I think it’s better than the anime and better for analysis.
I’m not trying to be rude, I just think that if you’re going to make a video analysis on mental health, at least be accurate.

i was so invested in the characters that i even read almost all of the light novels, and reread the manga countless times. Personally was kinda dissapointed in the Anime adaptation for leaving out important suttle details of works it was adapting of off. Majority of the cast have their own struggles amd motives for their actions. The plot can be messy but its the characters are the ones that hooks me to the series. This video was really nice to see because i rarely saw people talking or discussing about this anime on this app.
Everyone is saying dazai is this or that, making him look like this great amazing person, but the thing is everyone is ignoring akutaguwa? why is it suddenly okay for dazai to abuse him both mentally and physically because he's depressed? He basically ruined akutaguwa, manipulated him, made him solely dependent on dazai then left- and replaced him. And never cared to do anything about it. Its not okay. Not now, not when you had ___ happen to you. You cannot tell me this person is a good person when they did do something like this- and feel no remorse about it.
And then theres the come back, what about Kyoka? Well he did the same, but not to the extent of what Dazai did to him. And he let Kyoka go in the end. And Kyoka found a place to go a place that would support, love and protect her, but akutawuga never did, did he?

The anime is just the tip on the ice berg. The whole Bungo Stray Dogs universe is very complex story as a whole with a lot and a lot of things you to read and read to understand the whole story and plot.

I meant a lot as; the Manga would tell us about the recurring time's story. The Light Novels would give us the back stories, side stories, and there's even an official AU. Then there's the anime series, the OVA chibi anime, the Radio Drama CDs, the Stage Plays, the Anime Movie, and the Live Action Movie.
Add to that, because all of the characters are namesaked after REAL Authors, the books of these authors are also connected to Bungo Stray Dogs (the characters ability, personality, and upbringing, sometimes with a twist) eg Dazai - Dazai Osamu with his best selling book No Longer Human (dazai's ability in anime) the author's personality is adapted for the anime Dazai as well.

You explained pretty well how dazai is feels and behaves in the series. Some people only see the funny or boss-like side of him, while you focused how he also deals everytime with his strange feeling of emptiness, the feeling that life doesnt have much worth because its boring for him with the exception being on the brink of death to feel alive.
I think its something else. Like mentioned in Season 3 (or Death Apple?) we would never let his friends be in danger. I think that are REALLY those moments, where he feels alive because his life has some sense then. Similar to Atsushi. But he mistakes it with just being a dangerous situation for himself (and others maybe too). Since he just hold others dear, his feelings of protection and love for his friends are the ones that will keep him alive until he sacrifices himself while ignoring himself or gets over his depression and fight for HIMSELF and those he holds dear.

Glad that this video was released. This is one of those many factors that makes the series so great. While Dazai is not my #1, I can't help but relate to him in quite a few ways but this also goes the same way through some other characters, especially my #1, Chuuya.
Summary of this long post: The creator of this video made up a ton of fake scenes, did poor research, and described this person's character in the worst and most inaccurate way possible. Dazai is a complicated and interesting character, but for entirely different reasons, and i suggest actually watching/reading bsd to see that.
I know a lot of people have pointed this out already, but a lot of the scenes you talked about were wildly different from the versions you gave, which is a little annoying because it seemed like you wrote over parts of the show completely to try and prove your point. For example, around 7:10 you included a scene in which Dazai apparently 'opens up to Atsushi about his sense of worthlessness' - except, in this scene, what is really going on is Dazai helping Atsushi sort out his feelings about the recent death of his past caretaker. Also, around 4:00, you talked about Dazai telling Ango about feeling inadequate and jealous of Ango. That's absolutely made up, though, because he never mentions anything like that at all in their discussion. In the scenes they're together during that episode, they purely talk about ADA-related business because Dazai needs something from Ango. The things you discuss are never even mildly implied.
Also, your characterization of Dazai is majorly off. He never opens up to anyone except Oda, and even then the only things he admits are that he doesn't see the point in living and that he only joined the mafia to feel alive. Dazai also doesn't want to die because he feels worthless, he wants to die because he can't connect with others and therefore seeing BEING ALIVE as worthless, not himself. I also want to point out that the backstory you gave to Dazai was 100% made up, he doesn't have a confirmed backstory as of right now.
This is all pretty annoying because BSD does have an accurate portrayal of depression in characters like Atsushi and Kyouka for the reasons you listed, but Dazai's depression comes from social alienation and being totally desensitized to others around him. And the show DOES have this beautiful way of depicting moments of kindness and genuine connection between him and other characters, like when Atsushi calls him a good person and he's genuinely surprised, or when Chuuya trusts him enough to use corruption, or when Oda tells him to fight for the side of good. But, the Dazai you described in your video feels like an entirely different character that you made up and supported with false claims and fake scenes. It ticks me off that this video is basically clickbait that repeats a bunch of false points over and over again. If anybody is inspired to watch the show because of this video, i think they'd be very disappointed by how different Dazai is in reality.

I'm really glad that this show explain us that our attitude or behavior did not depends from us but mostly from the enviroment you've been raised. This also telling us that people are not evil because they want to,but because they've been traumatised or didn't know the health behavior traits.
Not to mention it's not just Dazai, you touched on this momentarily in the video but every character is made with so much depth and complexity that really brings them all to life and makes them feel real.
the way how character’s personalities are well made is the main reason why almost every fan kin someone from this show. There is no „trully happy without any problems” character - like in the real life, which i find amazing in bsd:)

This video is true, but some information in this video has been left out or is false.
Of course, the Dazai in the series depends on how the author had originally seen him or potrayed him (in which i am sure that the author himself had subconsciously made the story depressing like how i hadnt realized how the short digital novel i had written before). But one thing i know is that the author must have deperately tried to perfect Dazai's character in the series to match the real life author, Osamu Dazai.
After reading the novel, No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, i had realized how Dazai's mental problem is not what anyone can fully determine as it is what we call, "depression". In the NLH (No Longer Human), Dazai thoroughly explains Yozo(Dazai)'s problem. It is said in the novel of how Yozo is very much suicidal and has a habit of overthinking things. With Yozo having been able to western movies and shows due to his rich family, he starts to see humanity in another point of view instead of the view we were all taught growing up. The things that we call such as "feelings" and "emotions", makes Yozo question many things.
As Yozo(Dazai) feels very much out of place with others, he hides his true nature behind a "clowning facade".
And just like Dazai in the series, he jokes about suicide and negative things as it is part of his facade to hide his true self. Despite the many sad moments we see Dazai go through, Dazai himself had never felt sadness, anger, nor has he ever felt happiness. Even with these scenes that make it seem he is genuinely happy, Dazai has never seen anything he goes through is a happy moment.
The scenes of where he is mad, sad, and such, is all actually stress and overthinking. And the scenes of where he seems happy, is actually Dazai feeling relieved to know he had suceeded in something. Or like in the scene of him with Atsushi, is him feeling a sense of relief as well to know that he has someone that could keep him from losing his sanity longer.
But of course, we cannot confirm any of our theories until the author themselves confirm their perspectives on Dazai.
Another thing i had noticed is how Dazai could predict the future which is something i really love. In NLH, it had said Dazai has a strong imagination. So i had a thought, could Dazai had used his knowledge and imagination to imagine every scenario that could happen in the future?

i cant emphasise enough why i love this anime so much. the way they show their pain is in unique ways as well. as a person who struggles with my mental health it really is my comfort anime (it has no comfort sometimes i just like it so much.)
