Dazai Osamu: A Reflection of No Longer Human

  • Yozo Oba is one of the most prolific characters from Post-war Japanese Literature. No Longer Human, despite being published 80 years ago, remains insightful, moving and relatable, especially to young adult readers. It has often been mistaken as Dazai Osamu’s true autobiography, but how closely does it relate to the Dazai we know from Bungou Stray Dogs?

    Reading no longer human when you are doing fine and when you are in a bad period of your life are two completely different experiences.
    I read it for the first time when I was happy with my life and a second time when I was in that post-first-week-of-uni-depression and oh god I had never felt such misery istg

    What you said about Dazai and Yozo being the most realistic and human characters made me almost tear up because it's so true. It also remined me of Asagiri himself in LA Anime Expo saying sth along the lines of "When you read NLH you always think to yourself "Did this guy read my thoughts" and "This hits very close to home"" 🥹🥹 It really just shows how despite not seeing themselves as anything akin to the people around them - Yozo and Dazai are very universally relatable to a lot of people. And on a side note - I loved your hairstyle sm < 333

    As someone who is just getting into this type of genre this is great. When I first read no longer human I was pretty confused and now it makes a lot of sense!
    Please do an analysis on "the setting sun" by Dazai Osamu !

    Heyo! Just found this channel not that long ago. As someone who is in this fandom and knows others who break down other BSD characters, I enjoyed this video and it's detailed comparison. I enjoyed both the history and fictional comparison. For me personally I understand what Osamu was originally saying as his book, it's a path I have walked. I think a lot of us walk. I think authors and artists are the most human of us in their understanding of how the world works, should work, how it doesn't work and the possible might work.

    I loved it, Moon! It also broke my heart in places, but I kind of expected that, it being an analysis of this book (I love No Longer Human, but I can't really accuse it of being light hearted and the same can be said about BSD). Thank you for all the work you put into this and the great analysis you provided!

    And, No Longer Human is semi-autobiographical, some even say that it's a su¡c¡de letter, which makes everything worse. If Oba Yozo is in a way IRL Dazai Osamu then the fictional Dazai is also in a way the real one.

    I'm here from your Tiktok and OH MY GOSH, I'm so happy I'm not the only one who makes a full analises dedicated to a BOOK and A SERIES.
    To be honest, I was thinking of making my own video about NLH's connection to BSD Dazai but you were faster and your video was a lot more detailed then what I planned for mine to be. 😅
    Now I'm thinking of simply doing a rewatch of the whole BSD in order to catch some connections to Dazai's works and biography.
    Still, I had a great time watching your video. Can't wait for more!

    I would highly recommend reading Dazai's other works. While I do think that No Longer Human no doubt has so much to Dazai's character, but I also feel that Dazai's other works have a say as well. Because the fact of the matter is that before that novel, the RL Dazai tried his best to write more positive and uplifting stories during a difficult time in history. He retold old Japanese fairytales and he related a lot of random stories of people interacting on the everyday in Japan despite the lead up to and midst and aftermath of a devastating war. I feel like THAT, more than anything, is why BSD Dazai tries so hard to be a better man. Yes, Oda influenced him, but I feel like Dazai (of any iteration) tries(d) very hard to put good out into the world. It's just that for one Dazai, historically speaking, his troubles and possibly worse nature (not to mention mental health and probably some identity crisis in the way of gender or even sexuality) dragged himself and others down. It's a tragedy. But I feel like it's important to see the sides that desperately tried to fight against that tragedy.
    THAT ALL SAID, loooovely video. Loved the analysis. And love how you approached everything in this with understanding and sensitivity.

      absolutely yes!! asagiri has done a particularly good job personifying all of dazai's works (which, despite their differences, are all just uniquely dazai) so i 100% agree! the flowers of buffoonery is a particularly good point to start at after reading nlh :3

    I became a fan of BSD about 2 years ago now. I have now gotten the book NLH but will hold off on reading it until finals are done.
    In the meantime, I have been reading and watching videos and people options about NHL to understand it a little more as I have never done book analysis befotr( more of books that go deep into the human psyche. School books are more or less just moral of the story now-a-days)
    From the few things I have read and understa before reading anything, Dazai is what we call someone with both a mental illness and neurodivergent that delt with a lot of shitty things in life and sadly never got the help or the people that he needed in order to help him.
    In a way, people just nearly saw a ghost. Something that they never bothered to look deeper into wither it was because they never bothered too or saw him in a way to get some form of entertainment.
    What I mean by the entertainment part is that they accepted the clown act, and when he was self-destructing, they pointed and thought themselves better because he was the one that wasn’t normal. (I have been thinking about it since hearing some of the summery of the book in this video so sorry if this comes off as me rambling and not making any sense)
    I understand Dazai in the reason as to why he made the clown act. I too used a clown act to be able to somehow fit in in elementary and middle school as I was the quiet kid. I think I did it unconsciously or maybe more as I did cause I thought it was something I had to do.
    Luckily I was able to find people like me back in high school and have a little bit of an easier time fitting in with people without having to clown around as an act. I still act silly around them but it feels less forced then it did before as a kid. And when I get tired and just want to be quiet and be lonely, I can do it with them because they don’t really find it odd and they just do the silly things themselves.(as I was typing this I just realized another thing that I relate to with Dazai. I have friends that act my clowns and I can just be left alone when I want to. Damn this men reads my mind too well)
    I have also been visiting my school counselor to be able to get the help I need as college really makes everything more depressing (the funniest thing about it having counseling is I found out I have depression!!! What’s even funnier is that my coworker told me that I gave out the vibes of depression!!!!)
    By anyways, this rambling of mine has gone in long enough but there is still so much more I want to say. But I’ll leave that for later after I read the book and get my thoughts in order.
    Have a good day!!!

    • @bluemoon.f4v
      @bluemoon.f4v  Před 3 měsíci

      I'm very glad you have people around you to lean on when you need it! like you say, the most tragic thing about dazai is that he was never able to get help, perhaps because he didn't know it was something he needed.
      I hope this video helps you out when you get around to reading NLH!

    • @otakueve117
      @otakueve117 Před 3 měsíci

      @@bluemoon.f4v I’m very glad I have the people I do. I do still struggle sometimes as interactions can get exhausting and there are moments where my emotions don’t really stand out to me, like I become numb or something. But I’m just taking it one step at a time. And k hope that you are also doing well as well.
      In the meantime, I will definitely watch this video again once I read to book and continue on from my rambling before.
      One last note, when you were reading Asigir’s explanation of Dazai and his ability, when he said he found it interesting to make him a smart character.
      I thought that it was known that Dazai was a very smart man in his life, not just in his work but in outside life as well.
      I read somewhere that Dazai was given a lot of books at a very young age by his nanny and was able to read full length books by himself when he was about 5 I believe. It also mentioned that he graduated a year earlier from a pretty hard school as a teen. I’ll have to find the place I read it seen as there’s not a lot of information in his personal interests and day to day life that I could find as most of it is from Japan and not a lot if English sites give a lot of info.
      Anyway, sorry for rambling again and have a great day!
