My students asked me before spring break if I was gonna miss them. I laughed and said “No I will not. I need a break from y’all!” They said I keep it real haha
I wish this podcast was longer! All the other podcast I listen/watch are about a hour long. I know they could totally fill a hour worth of stories and talking.

Omg the entitlement convo/part of this video!!! When I would be working as a daycare instructor during the summer daycare program!!! We would do the i e pops / popsicles as a snack outside! My motto (which I borrowed from another teacher who I admire for her rules/boundary setting strategies) was “you get what you get and you don’t pitch a fit” !!!!! Omg before I implemented that motto/rule/saying, the arguments and fussing about what flavors of ice pops they wanted, honey we don’t get paid to buy y’all’s snacks and popsicles and such, so we don’t always have the exact flavor that each and every one of y’all youngins are wanting!
I used to say that phrase all the time then one day a wonderful parent volunteer said another version to my kids when passing out a treat. I’ve now adopted this version of the phrase. “You get what you get, and you appreciate it.” Of course with littles they’d need a lesson in what appreciate means. 😂

Idk I think it's important to remember what position the kid is in too, even though they're little brats sometimes it's often because they're upset. Like they have very little control over their lives, they're stuck in school eating crappy food and doing stuff they don't want to, and then when a treat finally comes around it can really be upsetting to get a flavor you hate and not be able to enjoy it. Like I will genuinely throw up if I eat something grape flavored, so I have memories of my teachers being super angry with me and calling me ungrateful because if they gave me the grape sucker I'd just give it back and refuse to eat it. I think there should be room for empathy there, even just explaining to the kids that there's a limited amount and etc can help, instead of just shaming them for not being okay with whatever you choose for them.

@@_gremlinboy also a very valid point, and I can definitely understand that perspective as well. Yes, the “get what you get, don’t pitch a fit” is a phrase used quite a bit, but we always try to make sure to address it in a way that helps the kids understand what it means to appreciate even the little things, and never in a harsh way. More so, to let them know it’s okay to be upset about not getting your favorite flavor or color ice pop, but that it’s also still awesome that there were enough ice pops in the freezer for us to give them out for everyone to have one each (especially since we don’t always have ice pops bc the teachers often times are having to pay for it out of their own pockets).
I definitely do not miss entitled attitudes during summer break. Great podcast- thanks for the laughs, everyone 😂
The iPhone thing reminds me of the girl at my high school who drove a BMW as soon as she got her license but thought that the calculators for math were too expensive. (And they are expensive, but this girl had a BMW!)

Omg the hot chip part unlocked a memory of mine 😂 my family is Filipino: so we LOVE spicy foods. My brother was in elementary school eating these chips from Thailand that were especially spicy. His teacher asked him what he was eating and my brother said “chips” so he said share them with the entire class because that was the rule (this was like 4th grade). My brother shrugged, and said sure. BOYYYYY everybody up in that class was CHOKKINGGG LOL. He got in trouble and sent to the principles office- parents got called and everything. He just said “well he said share with the class?? I was like sure okay?” Lmfao our parents thought it was hilarious

@@anaparreira8508 not universally, but teachers will do that to prevent eating in their class. But with younger kid it encourages sharing too. Clearly not always the best policy 😂
I have never heard “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit” here in Australia it’s “you get what you get and you don’t get upset” it’s was just one of those moments lol

I had a client tell me that her son’s teacher gave him cake out of the trash can to eat. My client was rightfully upset but the first thing I encouraged her to do was to approach the teacher to gain information into what happened. The 6 year old son was mistaken as to where the cake came from and the client would have never known that if she had blown up and made a scene.
My question is why would a parent believe something so ridiculous in the first place. Like, you don’t think twice about the accuracy of a 6 year old’s version of events? C’mon.
My dad is a teacher. back 14+ years ago he would get candy for his class and they were grateful for whatever he had bought.
I relate so hard to the entitlement part! We also do PBIS and my kids earn a party after 100 buzz bucks. Our second party, we voted as a class on options. The majority vote wins. After we voted, a few students said "ew no, nobody wants that kind of party!" I told them that these parties are a privilege, I don't have to provide these treats for you. So since we were ungrateful, we won't have our party this time. Maybe we will be more grateful next time and have our party. The next day one of the students asked me about having our party that day and I said no because we were ungrateful. By the time our next party came around, I heard no complaints the rest of the year 😊

I’m a new listener and I just as of today took a non education job for the first time in my adult life. This past year was the end for me. I am so impressed that you three ladies are going back next year. It was great to hear other teachers using the word feral for kids because that’s exactly what they were coast to coast (I’m in Portland Oregon.) I spent the past school year at a Waldorf Public Charter where there was zero technology and the kids had zero emotional regulation to start out the year. The others thing I had to comment on is my 5th graders playing Squid Game Red Light Green Light and then realizing mid game that they are pretending to kill each other with guns. It happened exactly the same way and made me almost spit out my margarita. Thank god for summer!

I do miss my high schoolers... well, not ALL of them. I definitely do NOT miss faculty meetings, PLC meetings, citywide meetings, IEP meetings, 504 meetings.... 😑
I also always have snacks in backpack,but I am also grateful when my teachers do something for us even if it is something small like grading on a curve
I totally agree with the representation in the classroom idea, small stuff really helps like the book with two dads or two moms. In highschool although I never came out to my teachers, There was a GSA club (Gay straight alliance for those who don’t know what it stands for) and they eventually sold pride pins, and just seeing some teachers wear them on their lanyards made me feel so much more comfortable around said teachers. Some teachers didn’t wear them but were still accepting and it really does help even the little things. It really speaks volumes when it’s something small especially if a student is scared or nervous to ask which I knew I felt scared to ask with some teachers (some of them were religious and I didn’t grow up in a religious household and have only really heard horror stories at the time so it did make me nervous when I didn’t know)

I'm in the GSA at my school and it feels so much more open in high school where more people have realized that it's a safe and supportive space for us. All of our teachers have pride flags in the windows of their classrooms to help us feel more safe about our sexualities and gender identities. (I am abrosexual, abroromantic, and agender) 😁

It’s crazy all the things you see, and hear , and really go through on a daily basis when school’s in session. I know I enjoy summer break. Being in a Montessori school it’s sooo much easier. Yes we do still have issues with some children but for the most part those kids are on their own and the teachers are there to just make sure the kids have what they need and help when they really can’t figure it out.
When Five Nights at Freddie's first came out, my students talked about it constantly! Especially kindergartners. 😬

That whole thing about “we can’t do anything because they have a behavior plan”…listen, I have special needs. If I used that kind of language with anybody, my momma does not care that I’m handicapped. I’m expected to behave just like everyone else. Let my momma find out I used that kind of language. No thank you!
I’m a year seven (age 12) and I wear my lesbian pin to school everyday and I love it when people ask me about it I’ve had teachers ask and one kid who thought it was a trans pin. 😂 she was in hysterics when I told her it is no where near. Also my school councillor also tells me she supports me very much 🥹
I'm a picky eater, and have had some teachers that used candy as rewards, my normal routine was dig through for a moment, see if there is anything I like, if there is I get that if not I say no thanks
Okay the entitlement is a real thing, however the red Gatorade thing is actually true, at least from my life experience. I have had ADHD all my life and beverages that would act as a stimulant in neurotypical kids (coffee, soda, anything with caffeine) would chill me out, however anytime I would drink anything with red dye 40 in it I would go hyper and speed up. I actually used it in order to stay up in college to finish projects 😂. Love the podcast, and that mom should’ve told the kid not to drink it instead of giving the wild suggestion of having you follow him to lunch, but just wanted to put my two cents in on the Gatorade from personal experience.

I’m not a teacher but I used to work with kids and this year was the last straw for me. The entitlement I witnessed from both children and parents was unbelievable. And the lack of basic manners is so upsetting. Kids need rules and need to understand there’s ways you behave in this world otherwise we’re setting them up for failure.
When I was in 7th grade, in one of my classes, my classmates were mostly awfully behaved, they were constantly screaming and being rude to my teacher. One of my classmates who sat in front of me would always take my papers and crumple them up and sometimes tear them. I've always been very neat with my classwork and am constantly trying to keep my school work neat and in order. He threw some insults at me and yelled at me a couple times. I feel so bad for the teacher because a lot of my classmates who were acting crazy were friends of her son. She held everyone back constantly, including the kids who behaved because she couldn't keep everyone in order with how terrible people were being. I was grateful when we went online that year because I didn't have to be bullied for a while. (I'm still in school and I'm still being bullied, but I know how to avoid them and get help better than in middle and elementary school.) Thank you for reading! (I'm at the class party/cinnamon roll part.) I teach high school, and as you said, I can't throw a party for 150 students. So, I try to bring in some candy on special occasions, one of them being final exams. I kid you not, almost every single one of them left their wrapper for me to pick up once they finished their exam.
I start my student teaching in August, and I have been binge watching all of y'alls episodes for the past few days! I love y'all so much!
Parents don't realize too that their child will exhibit behaviors that they may not exhibit at home. They're in a different environment, so they'll try and project a different image of themselves that you may not see. So trust that your child's teacher that they're just trying to help you to spot things that you may not see about your child.

I have a teacher who had posters around his classroom saying things like "love people for who they are" with the pride flag and all and he had it the whole year, I loved that class it felt so comfortable and safe and the teacher was a cool teacher too! He made sure to include everyone and make sure everyone felt comfortable in his classroom, best class I've ever been in!
Edit: I remember at the beginning of the year he was teaching us about the presidents and all (he was the french and social study teacher) and he mentioned things he wasn't obligated to teach like who gave gay rights where I live and overall showed his support to everyone, I remember us talking of sexualities and pronouns around him and there was this 'girl' that was comfortable with he/him pronouns and the teacher asked if he had a name that the person would rather be called, the student started crying because his parents didn't support him and the question over all shocked him. The whole year the teacher made sure to use that name and those pronouns and the whole class always talked good of the teacher and how nice he was. I was friend with the person who had parents who weren't supporting him and I remember how much he cried when we would talk about those things and how happy he was that someone acknowledged how he is. He had never met any adults ready to support him as much as the teacher and the person's self-esteem started going up (his parents kept bringing it down by saying insults about him being part of the lgbtq) like that changed my friend and helped him
My dog is a westie and he helps me so much with emotional support! They are just amazing dogs! I literally don't know what I would do without him. 3>

I'm a student and carried a pocket knife and mini teaser the entire school year and never got caught its easy for students to bring weapons in the school.
In this podcast gives me a great idea of what is really like to be a teacher from the point of view of teachers
I completely agree that parents need to not make up excuses for children/students behavior/actions in class, and not blame the teacher or expect the teacher to ignore it. If any of my kids did wrong actions in class they knew they would have to take responsibility for their actions. I can't stand parents that don't want to hold their children accountable for their misbehavior/attitude, etc.
If someone makes a mistake or understands what they did was wrong, then simply own up to that, apologize & move forward, not continue doing it. Our teachers are trying to educate our children & help them become amazing people, strive for greatness, alongside with parents.
As a fellow sufferer of ulcerative colitis, I love whenever Mrs. Wooley mentions her husband's condition. 100% relatable.

LOL BRI I used to teach preschool, and I had a kid sneeze in my face, mouth open, at least two separate occasions 🤣😭 They really will!! 😂 They’ll come by to “give you a hug” and wipe their boogers on you too. 😭😭😭
My son has mental and behavioral issues, but if he misbehaved in school. I’m holding him accountable for what he did. He still has to learn right from wrong. No matter what.

Last year I took a seminary class, and it's an LDS thing. The teacher that we had was amazing. Everyone (and I mean every single person) who took her class loved her. Occasionally, she would ask us if we wanted breakfast and if so what did we want. We had crepes one morning and pancakes another morning and on those days she brought all sorts of toppings for the crepes or the pancakes. Like whipped cream, butter, Nutella, strawberries, peanut butter, syrup, bananas and along with orange juice and chocolate milk. I loved those days because on those days we would eat and talk and chat and not really have a lesson. She also would bring games to play if we wanted to do so

As a parent I completely agree the admin does NOTHING to hold these kid accountable I always try so hard to ingrain good behaviors in my child who has adhd but the school gives her candy and play time when she acts out and then complains to me when she continues the behavior. Like she’s going to you’re rewarding her it doesn’t matter if I punish her at home if you reward the behavior she’s going to continue
So on one of the last 3 weeks of my first year at my new school our ELA teacher got a little mad for whatever reason and pushed a student far enough to break his personal laptop witch he brought instead of a chrome book and when I say the screen shattered I mean it shattered. Then she sent all of us out of her room, about 12 students went to the principal in a group while the rest of us sat on the picnic bench in the hall before the principal came and asked all of us what happened.
All of this over 5 characters typed into an area that no one owned, that were deleted shortly after.
(edit) for got to mention she deleted everyones work (i copied mine into a blank doc)

We discovered my friend's son had a behavior allergy to red-40 when he was 4 and he was able to tell his kindergarten teacher that he could not have red when it was offered. So a 14 can regulate himself.
Every kid is different. What works for one at a young age might not work for another at an older age. Thus is the nature of neurodiversity and other human variations in general.
At 14-yrs old my ADHD kid was still working on that skill. Whatever was in front of her was all that existed in the moment. That's an extremely common experience for folks with ADHD.
Most kids struggle with impulsively to one degree or another, some more than most. Others at 14 just don't want to follow the rules, esp if they don't understand or agree with them or think that they're dumb. A food dye sensitivity is definitely on the fringe edge of things. So, whether or not it's real for them, they might think it's bogus because they don't know anyone else talking about it and thus may be less likely to take it seriously.
Someone in my class (possibly me or my friends) started playing the harmonica whenever my teacher left the class

This year I loved my kid's teacher. Whenever I had a question or there was a problem they would get back to me the same day. My son who is 5 years old got into a little bit of trouble this year with hitting and biting some students and some other stuff and we handled it together. We also thought that my son needs an IEP or a 504 and the freaking CES director said no. She went above and beyond sticking her neck out to get him the help he needs. I gave both my son's teachers something on teacher appreciation week but I gave them their big gifts at the end of the year. I made them a quilt, a bag to carry all their school papers and stuff in and I am also own a soap and skincare shop so I have them a bunch of products from my store. They loved it. Teachers are so underappreciated and do not get paid enough money to put up with all the crap you have to. You guys seem like amazing teachers and your students are so lucky to have you.
She gave me her personal phone number so I can get in touch with her over the summer if I need to. I talked with her on Tuesday to tell her how my sons apt went for being tested for a learning disability outside of school and with talking to her I learned that the principal is a massive bitch (which I already knew. Never have liked her) made her resign and blacked mailed her to quitting all so her friend who was student teaching and graduating could get her position. Oh I learned about so many policies and procedures that the principal is breaking. If you don't kiss her ass and you stick up for your students and what the parents wishes are the principal will find the smallest thing to terminate your employment. My son's teacher was one of the best teachers in that school. She went above and beyond her job.

oh trust and believe it’s an international thing. kids were… SOMETHING in the classroom this year and the year prior.
So for context: I'm located in Ontario and when doing teacher's college you have to pick one of three devisions: Primary/Junior (Kindergarten to grade 6), Junior and Intermediate (grades 7 to 10) and Intermediate/Senior (grades 7 to 12). So you have to do a particular degree in Education in addition to your regular undergraduate degree.
So (also for context to example) I did the concurrent education program where I did my bachelor of education (Intermediate/Senior) and bachelor of arts (hons) at the same time. I decided prior to starting the B.Ed program that I didn't plan on going into public school teaching because I had the worst time as a student in my school system but i wanted to do the program so I could be a museum educator so a lot of what I observed when doing my practicums (teaching placements) was hard to navigate. But now that I'm doing my PhD and ultimately what I don't miss from teaching at the secondary and post-secondary levels is entitlement of students to grades and my time. So there is an assumption that because 'they' thought they should get a 90% that you should also read their assignment that way and I'm like no thank you or the entitlement to my time when it's like no ... you are entitled to contact time. I am available for these office hours, these times for one on one appointments and if those don't work you can email me. it's so interesting .... and so frustrating

they were just introducing chromebooks my first year of school and i thought i was wild for writing poetry in the google docs during assignments good lord i’m a square and i was not wrong that they heralded a questionable change.
there’s a difference between ensuring all students have equal access to online assignments and just giving em technology and letting them misuse it

We relax, we rest, we sleep late, we enjoy not hearing our names called SEVERAL times a day, but most of all, we keep our distance from kids!!🤣
With the candy thing, it's so hard because as a school safety policy, the candy needs to be the same for everyone (so that no student gets special treatment) but then you have to account for allergies. That means all the candy need to be allergen free: no gluten, no peanut, no egg, no chocolate, etc.
Just found another amazing podcast to listen too and I’m a parents but I use to teach 3rd and man times have change. I can relate something I hear makes me laugh others I get upset people have no clue or do some care about what teachers go through. Parents your angel is not always as sweet as u think they are

Gods, the entitlement! I'm a college teacher and I have this problem all the time. I've had a student call me after the semester ended. He had failed my class with like a 20 and he was an international student. He said that he was going to be deported for failing his classes and flat out DEMANDED that I change his grade to an A. I just laughed and told him no and hung up the phone.
about the entitlement, i worked at a preschool & my boss got mcdonald’s fries for all the kids as a surprise. multiple kids cried about not having burgers or chicken nuggets
I do after school care and summer day camp and my kiddos are SO Entitled! I thought it was just me because I’m not their teacher but it’s nice to hear that I’m not crazy.

I live in NC and we have a local “ham and yam” festival in my town. It’s like the town festival. They used to have a HUGE crate of free yams.
My now husband and his little friends used to throw them at each other.

One time when I just started subbing one of my first jobs was a kindergarten class and I was so diligent with washing and sanitizing my hands and I still woke up the next morning with pink eye 😭
After that it was only high school and Jr high for me 💀
I went to 5.5 elementary schools, 3 middle schools/junior highs, and 4 high schools because my parents were/are active duty military. The education system is so weird and not all on one system that I took 3 state histories, didn't take chem in high school because I needed phys sci to graduate and moved anyways, even after passing my College forensics class the year before, and was going to have grades drop because not all the states grading scales are the same. My sister took the exact same history class, the same book and everything, twice and had to rush her last state history to graduate on time. Her and I homeschooled for half a year for the 2011-2012 school year because it was so chaotic and I homeschooled 10th and 12th grades because I was fed up with moving every year and my mental health took a nose dive. Feel free to share on a new episode!
I spent two years in a Montessori school as a general dogsbody, and the toilet break ( or lack thereof) thing drove me crazy, especially having to ask a colleague if I could.

so i go to a christian school and go to church too so i see my teacher every sunday and wednesday and one sunday just a few weeks ago my teacher came up to me and literally said that she’s missed seeing me every day at school and it honestly made me so happy bc the whole week before that i was having a rough week and was feeling down and then my favorite teacher came up to me and said that and it just made me really happy. i absolutely love teachers💙

What’s sad is that schools are banning LGBTQ + books from classrooms and school libraries and in some public libraries.
These parents in these stories just see teachers as babysitters
I am a 1st grade para who had 1 teacher use their devices ALL day. Those kids were zombies. Another teacher barely used them. The kids in the class without accomplished so much more and were bored with the devices when we leaned on them during testing.
I understand how hard it is when kids don't seem to appreciate the candy.
My daughter does that and I've been working with her on it. She does have ADHD and on medicine but I cannot quite get it through to her. She is in first grade.
If the teachers were to let me know they were planning something like that I would send some candies or another type of treat for her though. I would never expect the teacher to buy stuff that every kid likes because that's not feasible.
I have a suggestion for the bathroom thing! My 5th grade teacher (going into 6th this year) had a sheet and a pen that you filled out the date, your name, and the time you left for the bathroom and the time you came back.
And that also means the kids who have more trouble telling time on a non-digital clock, unless the have a watch, they have to practice with the clock, and you have proof to any parent that this kid is doing this, in this kids handwriting!
One time at the beginning of the school year my brother was coming home on the bus and right before getting off ate a goast pepper and he loves spicy food but it was hot out and so he was walking home from the bus stop and my mom drives by him laying on the side of the rode sick. She struggled getting him into the jeep and when they got home he stayed on the couch for hours just sick to the point he was throwing up.
