- They've done something NO ONE else has: Geil added micro fans to memory modules for the best cooling possible. But do these tiny fans actually work to get the best DDR5 memory temperatures and speeds? And if they do, does it even matter?

The moment you take off that Heatspreader you know it's a gimmick. Looks cool tho :D
Yeah.. that's why we did it. Pretty terrible.
Not a gimick for someone like me that will havr a 120mm fan pointed at them and pushing for 9k+.. every bit of cooling helps. Im at 8800cl36 with gskills now. These are better dimms.
All I can hear is the eventual bearing noise from these little proprietary fans. I feel like this is probably a gimmick and just adding a thermal pad to go to the heat spreader... maybe add some fines, would have been a better long term solution.
exactly, just connecting the thermal pad to the shroud and taking advantage of that thermal mass to spread the heat and radiate it away would be better than running fans and blowing hot air around.
Yeah, LOOOOOL. Tiny fans are a nightmare! No, thank you.
Exactly...if you look at the thermal results, it's pretty much a gimmick
THAT!
Haven't used Geil memory in 15 years, but they used to be good quality products and often managed to get just slightly better timings out of the silicon than most other manufacturers. Can't say I think these micro (or did he call them nano?) fans are a good idea. They will eventually die and might make some noise before that. And even so I don't think they does that much of a difference to the temperatures.
he called them micro, pico, they look very much like a gimmick and I would expect ram to last longer than very small fans.
@@-opus guy there using the best binned hynix a that you can buy atm...these will stablize at 9000 on ny ks
Good review. The more moving parts, the more problems with longevity.
Agreed with this, replacing those fans won't be easy.
They look like little audio cassette tapes, I love it
Some of those rams are put together with adheisve. Like the trident one.
Is it safe to take it apart? want to replace the thermal stuff on it.
Will i need to reapply the adhesive? Or is there a a screw somewhere.?
8:20 "Irregardless"
That's not a real word 😂👍
There's good reason no one (maybe) has done this before. You'll soon learn the hard way...little fans don't last. MY Threadripper has two shrouded fan each covering 4 modules...and not little faneets but decent long lived ones. Far, far better. and cooler too.
WE NEED A CASSETE TAPE RAM MODULE NOW!
Before even hitting play I went to the website first and could just tell how gimmicky these are. I run my RAM hard and have needed active cooling on it for years - I use the Corsair two fan ram cooler - and that does help, a lot. These little fans however will be the bane of your existence when they start to go.
Looks awesome until you opened it lol. Will you guys make a follow up experiment video/review of it potentially making it better by adding really small heatsinks inside?
There's always a bunch of people complaining about gimmicks in the PC building world but I live for this stuff. This is what makes the market interesting. But it's impossible to talk to people about cool stuff. They always falling into the boring enterprise pre-built world where they give zero shit about anything hardware wise just performance or they are people who only chase performance and maybe some RGB but never ever do anything for the sake of being different or interesting. I have a bunch of the old school DIMM coolers and various kits from DDDR1 to DDR3. I have a bunch of niche PC stuff, like slot coolers. It's just for me. My PC is more than just a boring terminal.
tiny rgb fans on the ram xD i think they look alright but yeah I had no expectation they would actually do worthwhile cooling
The coolest memory sticks ever where the raidens with the plasma tube on top
Can we take a moment to appreciate that beautiful desk setup?
So freking cool !
last time i use geil ram was avexir raiden.. it was fun ram but i end up with non-rgb tridentz because the stability issues
Pls review latest asus zenbook pro 15 oled up6502 there is not a single video on this device on the internet, i think it is the best in it category
6600 is going to look pretty midrange in the next gen or two of ddr5. So bring on full cover waterblocks again.
Hot take: I would much rather scale with FSR than overbudget to keep up with ultra settings
@@xerzy Prices go down as they get further along in ddr5s lifecycle. Exactly like ddr4, where when I bought my 5820k 2666 was the fastest I could find without spending 400$. So like, if you want to sit there at 4800 when Intel is even saying that's too slow for 13th gen, then more power to you.
@@tag206 You must have ignored the last 2 years to be so confident about long term supply and pricing (not even talking power usage and price, or heat output).
I just think keeping current gen hardware is going to be more than alright, and that I would rather stomach lower quality image than go through the pain of hungrier hardware at higher costs in an era of potential chaos.
@@xerzy Good to know you've not looked at pricing in the last two years. It might surprise you to learn that GPUs are back in stock at reasonable prices, and ddr5 isn't expensive anymore.
@@tag206 I am very aware and I have chosen parts for a few people already, but you should know better by now.
it looks a lot like a VHS tape. I like it.
A few degrees of difference while introducing more noise and two new points of failure, trade-offs don't seem like they're worth it. Not to mention soldered wires, so not easily user replaceable. Most RAM kits come with lifetime warranties these days, but those fans will definitely need to be replaced in a few years down the line.
Don't get how these will have that much benefit seeing as the CPU cooler fan is right behind them, surely just adding small fins in that airflow path would achieve same result? Also means they are mega tall so they are blocking a larger part of CPU fan.
If the heatsink consisted had copper pipes and a thermal paste it could be effective by transporting the heat to where there is air flow but this product is just trash and nothing much has gone into the design.
0:38 after three years these fans will make such noise that will make you nuts :D
People hated the tiny fan on x570 chipset imagine these little things... 😂
dunno, my X79 motherboard has a tiny PCH fan and it has been working just fine for 11-12 years.
Geil, now thats a name I haven't heard from in years.
No way, finally a vendor who is actually making an effort to sell usable D5.
Wait, they failed. 50c at load? That's awful. Btw you absolutely do need cooling at 1.4V+ at 6600Mbps. You're doomed to fail TM5 ot Karhu if your DIMMs are running at 58-65c on the SPD Hub.
My biggest concern is what if you have 4 modules where the fans are jammed against the back of the stick in front?? If the heat spreader was better designed to actually cool everything well without the fans, then it might be a bit better. But right now looks very gimmicky.
Or an ITX board. ;)
Sweet cassette RAM!
It's either angles or curves but never both if you ask me.
They only went half way there, which is a shame.
But... i guess people will buy them just for the looks , reminds me the DDR Geil 400MHz ram i had with integrated temperature indicator (some strip that indicates temperature) , worst performance per money (compared to my ocz i replaced them) , also i had the Dominator ddr-2 1066mhz rams with the set cooler that broke after 1,5 year later ...
so what? people can enjoy products just for their looks. It's not like the performance is dramatically worse.
Another issue - imagine someone with an ounce of brains having 4 of those (or 2 on a mini ITX) close together on the MB? Me neither.
DAMN! Now my Teamgroup Xtreem isnt the coolest looking memory anymore! eh, i think the frosted glass look is classy, and those would look weird in my White build.. but fans? thats an unneeded point of failure.. but they look neet!
There are white dims too
Poor Geil, they seem to try so hard.
Wow, they somehow messed up while making it less compatible.
They look like mini blower style fans! nothing touching the chips to transfer the heat to the shroud and radiate it away so all that thermal mass is being wasted.
More moving parts to worry about. Fans do fail and what about replacement? They should make it so you can take it apart and clean it without any hassles. That GIANT! cutout text in the center is horrible!
I had a clip on ram fan cooler years ago, I was probably stupid.
If it stops working, jam in a pencil and rewind it back.
This is cool, but what if the tiny fans fail?
Exactly. Four more points of failure.
i dont think is doing too much cooling to the memory so is just for the looks lol
they literally mention in the video that it's mostly cooling the power vrm on the DIMM modules; so they're more about a stable high clock.
Gimmicks sell I guess, Ram is very complicated to understand and people see the transfer speeds and the 4 numbers that follow thinking thats end all to know, DDR5 does not need a heat spreader. But Gimmicks sell and I'm guilty of this also.
people have been saying the same shit about heatspreaders since DDR1; yet even Enterprise Server RAM DIMMs come with heatspreaders sometimes. It depends on the chassis and airflow. Non-ECC RAM creates more errors when overly hot. It's been proven with a heatgun.
It's a good review video. I was going to buy this product, but I canceled it after seeing this video :)
that's kinda funny when i watch DDR5 video on laptop with DDR2 😅😅
Almost as good as the Avexir RAIDEN memory kit, but not quite.
RAM sticks with fans, why not, I'm not bankrupt enough with the cost for next gen CPUs, GPUs, their required transient-ready 1500W PSUs and thermosyphon coolers, and the resulting power bills…
"Good PMIC cooling" cough Trident Z5
Good luck trying to pair these expensive ram with high end air cooler lol
0:40 and 1:10 Which one is true?? 🤔
Both...ish. ;)
I get Geil is hard to pronounce, its kinda the nile, but with a G :)
*regardless . Irregardless is not a word.
Cool but they kinda look like cassette tapes.
so they put fans on to cool the fan controller why put the fans and controller on it the first place then
DDR5 COMES with that voltage controller. That's what makes DDR5 and DDR4 different. That VRM area is part of the DDR5 design. And it allows for the higher MHz clocks on the DIMM.
Interesting memory, thanks for sharing with us. One note of feedback, it would be nice if you called the cameraman by name rather than address him as 'cameraman'!
This company name will crack a smile on all the German people around here :)
Ya... cuz my DDR5 is struggling so bad without fans right now... what a joke
Slap an rgb fan on a ram heatspreader? Can't be a gimmick at all.
are you new to PCs?
with 4 stick all installed, fan all blocked
Geil is pronounced like the name Kyle, but with a G
How about no RGB and just Alu/Cu heatsink?
Yeah, Alu/Cu is expensive, and cheep RGB and cheep fans are for profit!
Plus the fans will make your modules dirty, fans are loud, just a no-go for me.
there's literally a ton of options for that already, so why complain? hell, you can even buy some boring green PCB server RAM too.
This is such a bad idea. If you were worried about your mobo handling these DDR5 speeds with stability, you've probably halved your chances with these little fans + the RGB. It doesn't make a difference thermally!
scientifically prove it
I think by adding the stupid RGB lights they kind of nullified whatever cooling potential those tiny fans have, lol!
No just gimmick, those passive fans probably may getting noisy as time goes if its not replaceable. So yeah, what a Geil lord :)
well its different, but feel like it has been done better before
not this way exactly though, so a novelty; pretty cool though in my opinion. I have a bunch of various DIMM fan stuff.
If you develop DDR this way that it gets hot you are certainly doing a good job !! pushing the prices up, just for the sake of view, I can assume,.... to be handy ... to build certainly not, crapy sry.
This memory will not be as cool when the tiny fans whine.
Looks cool, but is completely stupid. Just stick a heating on the chip, that airflow would be so light it would make F all difference.
these fans will be useless in a 4 dim set.
Spank me with that ram 👀
You know those guys that go to Canadian Tire and buy all the cringy cheap car mods for their cars? That is what this RAM looks like.
Ha! Indeed.
@@HardwareCanucks heh :D
Geil means horny/awesome in German.
Just sonething i wanted to let you know because I couldn't get it out of my head everytime he said "Gail"
In Dutch it means also horny.
RGB is pointless enough on a RAM, now they also have fans? Even more pointless.
people love aesthetics, so like RGB, so not pointless. There's plenty of other options.
„Geil“ in German means „awesome“
I definitely need more cheap-ass fans in my case, as my chipset fan is not fucking my mind enough. LOOOOOOOL
So stupid.
I love chipset fans. My chipset gets hot as hell and the fan has been working fine for 11-12 years on my oldest motherboard.
I can never have "Geil" PC parts in my build. Because "Geil" means "Horny" in Dutch. And Dutch is kind of my native language and the main language in my country. It would make an already nerdy hobby a bit too cringe.
And yes I know "Geil" means "Awesome" in German.
useless, if needed I will just get EK or Alphacool RAM Cooler add it to the loop
The fans will be dead after 2 years.
did you guys know that Geil in german means DIE ? lmao jk
cool
tip 100
Bruh
Oh lol I clicked on this and it said that it was made 18 seconds ago
I used to find these things appealing.
Given all the negatives, I’d take a pass.
I had a memory cooling fan that used to clip over my DDR3. It was pointless.
It's not pointless, especially if non-ECC, as heat can cause memory errors that you won't notice until that old file you wanted has bit flip issues.
they could've just used thermal pads that cover both the RAM chips and the PIMC and RAM cooling plates that use screws (like the EK ones) while also being lower in height and the case/rad fan above the RAM would provide sufficient airflow or they could sell RAM fans like the ALSEYE 60mm RAM cooler which can be used with any kit you want.
IMO This product is dumb as all hell.
These look sightly like a cassette tape. Guess they were NOT trying for that cuz I don't think many RGB fans even know what I just said.
Its whacky
Sorry, I have to trash this, This product should be banned by law.
noice
No trust in this brand. Their RAM quality is not reliable.
They're using some of the best ICs available though.
hello
They don't even look good.
Definitly the ugliest ram ever.
What a joke
Please turn off your bass enhancement for your microphone! It's super annoying! Woomp Woomp Woomp with every word. I couldn't hear the fans until you stopped talking and literally had a mic pointed at them. Seriously, TURN OFF YOUR BASS ENHANCEMENT just use your normal voice!
Where are these? They were promised in May. Its almost december. FFS what is wrong with them?
