The way she forced Bobby to speed-run his grief over his dead wife and the way she tortured his kids with the Oujia Board and chat room and forced her way into their family was evil. She is literally the worst
Agree on the ouija, hard disagree on the ziti. Bobby needed to be a father to his two children and help them cope and move on from their own grief. Having Bobby eat the ziti was probably inspired from her therapy and was maybe the only good idea she got out of it.
I agree, that sickened me.
The kids needed stability and a woman in the house, Bobby needed to snap out of it not only for his children but for himself, and Janice needed purpose, a place, and stability. It was a win, win, win. If everyone had stepped back and tiptoed delicately around, Bobby and the kids would have been worse off.
Part of that is just the constraints of the show. We didn't have three seasons to devote to Bobby slowly overcoming the grief of his wife and Janice slowly moving her way from acquaintance to friend to girlfriend to fiancee to wife.

The youngest (usually a mama's boy or daddy's little princess, fast-forward to 2023 where both are the same damn thing) tends to be the most normal because by the time of his or her birth as the parents have slowly learned to iron-out their mistakes over time. First-born is the most fucked-up and the middle child is confused for these reasons. Not rocket science, Nate.
I sympathised with her for the first time when she was making progress in therapy and Tony maliciously tried to undo all that and humiliate her in front of Bobby and his kids.

Yes, when writing, directing, and other acting is so good on a set, the actors make sure they bring their A game. After following "Talking Sopranos," it's obvious that none of the ensemble cast can ever top The Sopranos & their work there, and as human beings, it is a mixed blessing to them.

The only time I felt sorry for Janice was when her mother mocked her because she thought Richie left her at the altar. In that moment you saw the 12-year-old Janice getting cut down.

There are some families who just really hate it if one member has any kind of joy, to the point they root for it if something bad happens. I think it's because they feel bad they didnt do certain achievements themselves so they'd be sad if their family does better than they did so they root for them to fail.
Aidda tuturros performance was so nuanced and exactly on point for her character, its something we will rarely ever see again. A lot like artie bucco, these two characters were acted to such perfection. Janice and artie bucco i feel jumped over, out and beyond the page...Like on paper they were nothing compared to what they were on screen.
Defending Janice was the 13th labour that had to be performed by Hercules.
I love the little detail that in a world of well-dressed, uptight people she always has her rock-n-roll boob tattoo on full display. Even at family events and nice parties 😄

Janice was an incredible character !! I think we all know somebody that’s just like her and that’s what makes the character work so well.
I can see more of Janice in myself than I’m comfortable admitting in public. I’m not proud of it but I feel like knowing that is half the battle.

I always felt that an additional reason for her killing Richie was realizing that he was serious about killing Tony. She was able to toy with the idea of "ousting him" and taking him down a peg but when Richie starts talking about murdering Tony she gets visibly nervous and shuts the conversation down. The reality of the situation was starting to set in and she (maybe even unconsciously) wanted to save her brother.

If Bobby wasn't killed I think that Janice would've changed for the better. Despite her manipulations I sincerely believe that she cared for Bobby and his kids. Caring enough to still take care of them after Bobby's death.
She may still have - I always was a little disappointed with the show sending her off by echoing her mother - for all her faults she was far more self aware and caring than Livia, and I felt she deserved a better arc than descending into bitterness.
Everyone gives her so much shit but she was one of the few characters who changed for the better. I think she really truly legit regretted how she treated her son Hal and accepted she couldn't make it up to him but was not going to repeat that mistake with Bobby's kids.
And while she aggressively gaslight Bobby into a quick marriage, she did this because she finally recognized a good man after years of throwing herself at dicks like Richie and Ralphie.
I still think Tony tricked Bobby into killing Janice’s son in Canada.
I half think that but what would he get out of it? Devastating Bobby yes, but he would lose the chip on the shoulder of at least not abandoning his kids like Janice to throw at her.
@@chipwanderlust113 Well, consider what happened prior to the hit. Tony and Janice got into an argument. Bobby beat Tony up. Then, Tony “apologized” and offered to make amends to Bobby by helping him “pop his Cherry.” What better disgusting way to avenge them both than by having Bobby kill Janice’s son under pretended circumstances. Admittedly, there’s no proof that the Canadian Bobby killed was Janice’s son. But it could’ve been. Plus, I think it was more about getting even with Janice than getting even with Bobby.

Kino probably could, because the show made Livia more sympathetic as time went on. Livia definitely had problems, but the mob life made her miserable like it did Tony, by the end he was completely jaded by the betrayal.

I think the reason we (I) hate Janice so much is that while tony uses bullying and violence as leverage, he still is seen by most for what he is. He also is constantly stressed and working, and is also honestly not mega happy with what he’s doing, and has (later on) a modicum of self reflection. I feel Janice gets what she wants by just being a victim and fake savior all the time. Basically, if I had to make a deal with the two of them, I’d know what I was signing up for with tony. I’d know I’d be entering into a game I don’t really want to play. Janice would manipulate you into playing without you even knowing until you’re in it. Both terrible people. I just see tony as direct, and somewhat accepting of the consequences of his life, and Janice as indirect, unselfaware, and self victimizing.
I always remember Janice saying to Carmella in early season 2 that she has to be less strict with Meadow. To let her rebel and it's normal for kids and teens to act out.
Then in season 6 at the beach house, her daughter won't get out of the water and says no and Janice angrily says "Don't tell me no. Don't ever tell me no" while Carmella uncomfortably looks on

I like Janice. I think deep inside Tony knows how things - considering the way they were raised, and that style of dinamics they have, like, women in general in that sort of circle and social dinamics of them, women are more dependent of men - so considering those aspects, i think Tony, despite his bully form, he understand how things maybe were even harder for Janice as a woman, how much she also already tried in her life create other paths for herself as well, this type of paradox that Tony also feels, in between what he could have done differently, and Janice in a way, didnt have for example, what Tony could give to Meadow, and Janice didnt jave a mother like Carmela, and Tony gets it this actually, even if he is very mean also to her, because familys dinamics are always complex anyway. To me, Janice when throw Ralph the stairs in that episode, is so funny and great to see, that one person was able to to that to that awfull man Ralph.
I do think that Killing Bundetto was more of a Mercy and a Favor to Him then for any kind of Personal Gain. Both Tony and Janice are probably more like their Mother as we know Johnny Boy wasn't around too often.

Janice is actually my favorite character. Tony was just like his mother - that Janice ran away from - which is why they were at each other's throats.
On one hand, I get Tony's gripe that Janice ran away and didn't help take care of Livia, leaving all the work to Tony and now comes back at the end looking for a cut of the inheritance. On the other hand, Janice has nothing and the cost of Livia's small house would mean a lot to her whereas Tony pisses that much away on prostitutes every month.

Janice really highlights how in shows like breaking bad/sopranos we all idolize masculine rage but disparage feminine rage entirely. I agree with all the points in this video and I appreciate the deeper analysis of her character

Thank you for this video! Janice is one of my favorite characters on the show. Loved it now she took out Richie after he hit her. Would I want her in my family or to be friends with her? Absolutely not, but was a great character in The Sopranos universe.

Janice is an interesting case study in how gender determines ones behavior and role in a very traditional and patriarchal subculture, you can see she had many of the same borderline and sociopath traits as tony (likely through shared upbringing and genetics) but while he is able to openly and impulsive indulge in his rage and violence to fulfill his business/desires, janice initially rebels (through drugs, new age spirituality etc) but then ultimately returns to the family and expresses her pathology through passive aggressive undehanded tactics, like gaslighting, manipulation, psychological tactics

There’s something endlessly fascinating about the way Janice draws in men who are either emotionally dysfunctional, sexually dysfunctional, or both. Especially so since the men we see her with have a lot to lose, but don’t seem to care.
