    They could have replaced all of Silvio's scenes with Paulie instead and not used Silvio or Pussy in the movie at all. Pussy shows up for no reason despite being more of a childhood friend of Tony's and young Silvio feels like a guy doing a caricature of Silvio + both these characters being older than Tony messes with the timeline. Paulie being a prominent member of Johnny's crew is pre established and Tony even notes he used to wish he was his father when he was young. This would make way more sense for the story if he was regularly around Johnny and Dickie like another wise-cracking uncle who likes to tell funny stories, which a teenage Tony would find entertaining rather than annoying like he did as an adult. This would also make way more sense for him to be the one to tell Dickie to continue speaking to Tony, as we know Paulie loves Tony and was a respected member of the crew.

    • @randompersononthenet8548
      @randompersononthenet8548 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Silvio was always older than Tony, the actor playing him was older than James Gandolfini

    • @hxllxwpxint.
      @hxllxwpxint. Před 3 měsíci +2

      Yeah it's just conflicting quotes from the original series made it seem like he was at most 10 years older than Tony, but Many Saints shows he was already in his mid 20's and a member of Johnny's crew while Tony was just a boy. In Sopranos, Paulie arguing with Sil made it seem like Paulie was a member of Johnny's crew and Sil didn't become an established member of the DiMeo family til he was in Tony's crew when he references his seniority. Made more sense Sil became Consigliere to Tony if he was more of an older brother to Tony instead of almost an Uncle like Paulie who was only Capo despite earning for the family longer. Tony even talks about how Paulie was close to his Dad and Paulie mentions Dickie, while Sil seems to mostly just be aware of them. I still think that role in Many Saints would have worked better with Paulie instead of Sil and maybe we would have gotten a more subtle performance but I am willing to admit Silvio was always intended to be older than Tony. Also actor ages isn't much of a factor considering Tony is supposed to be like 15 years Chrissy's senior but Gandolfini was only like 5 years older than Imperoli. @@randompersononthenet8548

    As Tony said, "'Remember when' is the lowest form of conversation." The film was absolutely poisoned with call-backs, and the burden of them denied this movie from becoming its own thing. You want to do the Newark riots through the eyes of Jersey mafiosos? That's a great film full of over the top characters. You want to do a story about a psychopath who insinuates himself into a family and grooms their son into becoming his own personal golem? You got a nice little thriller. But if you do both you end up with a beef wellington that turned into a burrito.

    I had 2 main issues with the film:
    1) Random continuity errors, especially characters ages changing, notably Sil and Pus being 10-15 years older than Tony when it was clear in the show that they were all meant to be around the same age. I didn't have an issue with scenes referenced in the show being different in the film, that makes sense with the characters being unreliable narrators and human memory being imperfect anyway.
    2) The plot was convoluted and it seemed like they were trying to squeeze a miniseries' worth of story into a single 2.5 hour film.
    The main strands were:
    a) Dickie's relationship with his immediate family (father and uncle)
    b) Dickie's relationship with his extended family (esp. Tony)
    c) Dickie's relationship with the mafia
    d) Dickie's other criminal activities, i.e the Harold plot line
    e) Young Tony's story and decision to follow his family into the mafia.
    All of these plot lines were promising but none of them were given enough time to develop and engage the audience.
    It seems that the team behind the film consisted of people who were very good at writing and directing TV series, but struggled to adapt that to a film with its limitations in screen time. Alan Taylor especially - if you look at his work, he has directed excellent episodes for some of the best pieces of TV, but his film work has been less than stellar (Thor: The Dark World, Terminator Genesis, TMSON...)

    The “inaccuracies” were deliberate choices.
    Everything with the carnival and later shows you several things:
    - How Tony viewed his father vs. how he actually was
    - Tony’s narcissistic nature affects how he viewed himself as a child
    Like that entire story, Melfi reacts in a way in that she can’t believe what she’s hearing. Which we know now makes sense because it was all made up.
    Hell, Tony even projects his relationship with his daughter onto his father and Janice.
    I think the stuff about whether or not Dickie is an addict is supposed to show that Christopher was looking for an out for dealing/not dealing with his drug problem. It was a narrative he was told and believed.

  • @sterlingarcher74
    @sterlingarcher74 Před 2 měsíci +2

    My biggest problem with this movie was that it didn’t do anything new.
    1. We don’t get an exact answer on who killed Dickie Moltisanti (only that Uncle Junior ordered it).
    2. We’ve seen the main character fall for his mistress, only for her to get jealous and lash out for him going back to his wife.
    3. We’ve seen the main character lash out in jealousy over his goomar also being unfaithful.
    4. The sets were pretty much the same. A lot of it still takes place in Satriale’s and the church they’d go to for every funeral (probably the most minor critique).
    Plus the few things they did change didn’t really matter they even re-filmed some old flashbacks from the show.
    1. Young Tony being taken away by the police when his father was arrested has zero bearing on the plot.
    2. Johnny firing the gun into Livia’s beehive hairdoo could just be chalked up as something he did more than once.
    3. Silvio.
    4. They did a good job building up Harold as a villain (the only new character), but him lashing out at Dickie seemed to come out of nowhere. And there was no resolution for that plot point.
    5. When I first watched it, I thought Giuseppina was supposed to be Chris’s real mother, but that wasn’t the case? Idk.
    Besides Silvio, the film was well acted and looked authentic for a period piece. But it just felt like they threw a bunch of familiar things in for fan service that did nothing for the plot.

    I thought the Harold story would lead to Tony’s first body(murder). Remember when him and Paulie went on the lam because the feds found Willie Overall’s body. If I remember right Harold was beefing someone named Overall before he went to the army. I think it was the guy he shot.

    My biggest issue with Many Saints of Newark is that it doesn't accomplish anything. They went to all this effort getting a decent cast and recreating the time and setting, and then they're unable tell any kind of worthwhile story.
    The plot is unfocused and all over the place too...
    *You have Dickie Moltisanti as the protagonist, and it's about his personal struggles and his relationship with Giuseppina.
    *You have what I guess is a conflict with this black gang led by Harold McBrayer. One that they didn't explain very well and wasn't even resolved.
    *And then you also have this weird stuff with Tony: Where he does shit like steal an ice cream truck with his friends and try to get his mother on an antidepressant. (This is what you do with teenaged Tony Soprano?)
    These are all things you could flesh out and make sense of over a television season, but they didn't have a season. They had a two-hour movie and it's almost like they just filled it with undeveloped ideas until it was time for the credits.

    I saw a video that had the theory you mentioned on how the events in the movie actually happened and the details in the series was due to bad memory. The video compared the funfair bust scenes from season 1 and the movie. I think that theory adds a fun detail to the series, stories getting passed down, details changing over time. Goes with the mob life too as the loyal members wouldn't squeal or tell the full story to people unless they were rats and members would exaggerate details if they wanted attention or to boast.

    Kino, video idea none of the other Sopranos fan channels have done before as you're the ONLY one who can make this work: I've long contended that David Chase has some sort of weird vomit fetish given all the times characters on The Sopranos have visibly vomited on screen (particularly Tony). Without the visuals (we didn't need to see it then; we certainly don't now), can you explore if Chase frequently used vomiting as some sort of weird plot device, or did he just enjoy grossing his audience out? Thanks!

    he is meant to portray the devil

    - jazz used to be called devils music

    It should've been a short series. Then it would have time to explore both the riots and the romanticized mob life. And just fix its nconsistencies like Silvio's age and many characters not being there at all like Paulie, Feech or Tony B or Puss heck even a young Johnny Sack or maybe Carmine would've been great to see in a scene or two. The film didn't shy away from Easter eggs but sure did when it came to showing fan favorite characters in their prime.

    I think Chase wanted to make it a much more profound piece about racism and life in late 60s North Jersey.. having grown up here and hearing stories from my parents I was excited to hear it was primarily about the mafia in the backdrop of the Newark riots.. it’s a story that needs to be told.. about working class people and the dynamics of corruption and violence.. this could have been an excellent movie.
    I surmise Chase wanted the fact that it was in the Sopranos universe a minor detail but Warner Bros. insisted he add more elements with Tony, etc. It ruined the film.
