Is there any evidence who was stronger the Aprile brothers rich and Jack or sopranos brothers junior and Johnny? I understand they were all captains so it seems equal but idknif Jackie crew was separate from richies like sopranos were or if Jackie took it over while he was locked up making it only one aprile crew. The aprile and sopranos have lot similarities older brother left behind outshined by younger brother both have had the title of boss just wondering who was stronger before Richie was locked up like late 80s who was more influential back when erockles or whatever his name was boss can’t find much

Kino made a good point about the feds, though. Remember that deleted scene with Puss being interrogated? He asked for a lawyer and they completely sidestepped this and got him to comply. And Pussy was a made guy.

Chris made the biggest mistake by getting his wife involved in the business in the first place. Notice, none of the other mob guys have their wife anywhere near their organization.
Carmella would have probably freaked the fuck out and made the same stupid mistakes if she got caught committing a crime or her life was threatened.

I would include: Paulie needlessly antagonizing the Russian setting off the whole Pine Barrens debacle, Tony’s general faith in Christopher, Adriana getting in the car with Silvio, Richie Aprile underestimating Janice, Paulie believing he was handling Johnny, Tony disrespecting Carlo, making Carlo’s decision to flip that much easier

In the back of her mind, she knew there was a chance it could end badly- and when Sil turned off onto that lonely road, she knew in fact that was going to be the case.

Jackie Jr cheating on Meadow is one of the dumbest things ever . Tony could have easily had him killed , and he recognized that too.

Remember that Jackie Jr was always dumb according to Junior. He almost died drowning on 3 inches of water.
Prior to robbing the card game, killing Jackie Jr was never on the table. Tony was trying to honor Jackie's wish to keep Jackie Jr out of that life. And it wasn't just the cheating. It was being in strip clubs, having a gun on him, constant fuck ups, etc that tried his patience. To be honest, it was one of the few times on the show Tony acted selflessly and tried to act on interests other than his own.

AJ was so dumb that he thought Jackie Jr. was a stand up guy even if he did almost drown in 2 inches of water at the penguin exhibit that time when he was 3 yrs old.

Feech Lamana's greed got him sent back to the can. Also, Ralph's mouth got him in trouble numerous times and also led to his death.
Ralphy was by far the most intelligent and interesting of them all.
It wasn't Feeches greed so much, he just wanted to show the young guys he can still ride & got himself put back in.
Good call- he may have been left off the list because he wasn't a major character, but by that logic, neither was Coco. Feech was literally told "not to step on anyone's toes" and continued to do so again and again. Not having him on this list was a major oversight.

Tony became a snitch and got Feech locked up because he felt threatened by him, that's worse than killing Ralph over a horse and makes him a hypocrite for killing Pussy. Tony really was a shitty leader when I think about it, committing treason and mutiny to the boss of the family that's also his uncle, talking mob business to a shrink, putting hands on made guys, snitching, and so on and so on.
I think killing Phil's brother was a much dumber decision than beating up Mr. Kim.

Fat Dom's dismissive view of New Jersey reflected how Phil viewed the Soprano glorified "crew". Then Coco made the "cream" jokes to Meadow. Phil believed that NY could act with impunity. This led to the war and his guys ultimately betraying him. He was just getting started.
It also goes to show why Phil could never truly succeed Carmine or John. Neither of those two respected New Jersey, but they both understood that so long as they placated them and treated them as a legitimate family, then they could profit off each others success. Phil only saw them as the glorified crew that Carmine called them, so any business dealings the two had were doomed to fail.
Yeah idk why Phil ever thought he was going to ever seriously supersede all the guys that have been on the street while he was in prison, threatening butchie indirectly was extremely stupid. Tony treating Paulie like shit most of the show was also a huge mistake.
To be fair his first job was the Shah of Iran, give him a break
@@tannerhachey2033 It was all about money to these guys. Tony didn’t treat Paulie well because he was a dinosaur. A snatch and grab guy during an era where they penetrated unions and politicians. That’s why they put up with Ralph.
@@dmartig1 but they ended up losing money in the end because of it. Obviously in the short term Ralph made way more money but Paulie survived way longer than Ralph and hence ended up if not behind Ralphs earnings ahead of them. Sometimes it pays not to be an overly aggressive asshole like Ralph was lol (little life lesson there). To be fair Paulie was a huge liability and I'm actually surprised Tony didn't kill him when he already showed he had no issue killing people he knew for a long time. I think Paulie actually sold Tony out at the end after realizing Tony killed christopher but that's pure conspiracy theory.
Tony beating Zellman. Cost himself a business partner and his marriage (temporarily).
A lot of this is a perfect example of Intelligence vs Wisdom. A lot of guys in this show were lauded as very smart individuals, but the problem is that they had no impulse control and constantly suffered from tunnel vision. So while they're master schemers and very calculating individuals, they typically lose sight of the bigger picture resulting in these mistakes.
Like animals. These people behave how humans behaved for 100,000 years. This show served to remind is we are still evolving. Even supposedly wise and nonviolent people love this show because they can sublimate their chimp impulses watching others be violent and foolish.

Civilization didn't make humanity any less inherently violent (its still in our genes) and most hunter gatherer cultures also hated criminals and sociopaths too (because they harm the group which lowers their ability to survive). And its not like intelligence and wisdom didn't exist before civilization. Humans inherited their high intelligence from other mammals. Intelligence and reason are also "chimp impluses" too, there's nothing uniquely "human" them and they are just as primal as violence.
Evolution isn't about "moral progress", it's about adaptation and survival. If being a violent and implusive gets people a survival or sexual advantage over being smart and peaceful then evolution would favor violence and impulsiveness.
Your comment made think back to the scene in the last season between Tony and Carmine Jr, were one of the dumbest characters on the show displays real wisdom in his conversation to Tony.
Carmine played the game best. No one saw him as a threat.

My favorite is Tony giving Meadow the car he got off Robert Patrick. In what world is she going to be able to drive that without it being an issue for her? It’s her friend. Even assuming she’s fine with it, which he should know she wouldn’t be, what will her peer group think since they likely know the car? It’s a choice that can only make Tony have more stress at home at best, and a total blowout at worse.
But he knew what he was doing. I think.

Vito had the chance at a real life free of bigotry and walked away from it. Simply because he was lazy. He had a partner who loved him and a simple life away from being murdered. Just wild to me.

Yes, Vito’s storyline drives home a central theme of The Sopranos: how difficult people find it to change their behavior, even though it’s self destructive. We see Tony go through years of therapy, near death experiences and vivid dreams that tell him deep down he never wanted to be a mob boss, and yet he can’t get himself off that path. Carmela is told straight up by the older psychiatrist that her only shot at redemption and happiness is to leave Tony and take no money from him and she realizes she can’t do it. Jackie Junior is told moments before his death (by losing a chess game to a little girl) that he has to stop looking for short cuts and take his time to learn in life but he ignores that advice one final time before stepping outside and getting shot. I never fully understood the significance of the Vito subplot until I saw it in that context.
@@mattpope1746 Great observations. Also don't forget Adriana almost convincing Chris to leave the life, and then he goes to a gas station and see's a man with his wife and kids that looks miserable. He decided the easier change would be to move on without Adriana rather than leave the life.

Jackie Jr. just being a wannabe gangster is dumb enough on his part when his father and Tony did not want him to become a gangster. He had his whole life ahead of him, and he blew it. Also, a quick shout out to Ralph's dumb decisions too. He opened his mouth one too many times, and that got him killed by his own boss, Tony.

I'm going to play devil's advocate. He's failing out of college because he's stupid, so working harder won't help. Even if he gets through, he'll be bad at any legitimate degree-requiring job. Maybe he could get by as a regular guy in the world, but he probably had more money growing than Tony's family, on account of who his fawtha was. So even being a regular guy will be hard because he'll never legitimately make that kind of money. I think he's screwed, being born so rich but without the raw brainpower to succeed in really any area of life. And also being born into the mob, he naturally thinks he can just go into that life. Before you say he should figure out that he's not capable of it, remember, he's really stupid, like, "drown in three inches of water" stupid.

He was getting back at Tony the only way he could. He was dancing around the line that could've gotten him a bullet in the head. Luckily, Johnny Sac was honorable enough not to spill the beans....
@FreeOpenTruth While I do absolutely think Johnny was honorable--I mean by mafia standards, not normal citizen standards--I do NOT think he kept his mouth shut regarding Paulie being the one who tattled to him about the joke out of any sense of honor or loyalty to either Paulie or La Cosa Nostra. Instead, I think he kept his mouth shut because he knew that Paulie was an asset to him because he knew he could depend on Paulie to come running to him and spilling the beans aboit stuff such as the joke and a bunch of other shit.
And since Johnny was a master pragmatist, it was for that reason that he kept Paulies name hidden from Tony. Otherwise he wouldn't have had his little pet bird over in New Jersey who was ready and willing to cough up important info anytime he was in trouble, or when he simply wanted to score points with Johnny and New York.

Killing Ralphie in an emotional rage was probably Tony's dumbest (though not worst) decision. Ralphie was his best earner and, despite being a sociopath, had not done anything to merit his death as far as mob rules are concerned. The money worries Tony has in later seasons could have been avoided if he had left Ralphie alive.
Dumbest decision in the show was Phil Leotardo squeezing Jersey for no reason other than not liking Tony and then starting a mob war for (again) no reason.
Ralphie hit one of Tony's trigger words: "What are you a vegetarian? You eat beef and sausage by the fuckin' car load!"

This is established in other episodes during his therapy that anything with meat is a trigger for Tony's panic attacks.
Vito took over Ralphie's spot, so he was making money...Ralphie was a liability that started the tension between New York & Jersey
Ralphie was way too unpredictable, killing him may have caused some problems but there's no way of knowing how many other problems it avoided.

Probably not a good example but anyone marrying or dating Janice. Everyone that dated or married her ended up dead.
On a serious note, I think Adriana's decision was definitely 2nd worst in my opinion as it led to her death and had a negative effect on Chris that potentially led to his own decisions that eventually led to his demise.

In the second season Chris travels with Tony to Italy and spends the whole trip high as fuck on heroin instead of "seeing the volcanos". It was an issue 2 seasons before Adriana was ever even presented with that choice.
I don’t think Beansie thought that Richie would have dared to assault him in public, next to so many witnesses, especially after being released from jail. But as we saw: having Mafia protection meant nothing. Tony did nothing to truly protect Beansie, and a stupid ramo means nothing, nor 50,000$ (the medical bill must have been the triple of that).
Well, that's not entirely true about Beansie getting no protection from the mafia, he did get a ramp out of it.
After Beansie got run over (for the record that car thing was a hit and run) , what else could Tony do? Beansie was sent to Miami after so it wasn’t a total loss
Well, one of the dumbest things would also be Paulie messing up the hit on Phil Leotardo in season 6, bringing in a couple of guys from Naples who mistook Phil's goomahs dad for Phil and "apparently the goomah had to be taken out too."
This didn't really impact the bigger picture, 'cause civilian causalties are merely that. Although they could have gotten to Phil a lot earlier, but it is just another example of Paulie doing stupid things in the series, like telling Johnny about the joke.

The hit by the two zips was not, per se, a bad idea; only the execution was flawed. To be truly stupid, a decision has to be apparently bad even before being carried out.

How was that a bad idea? How was paulie supposed to know that his goomah's dad looks basically exactly like the Shah of Iran?
Thanks for bringing up Adriana and talking to the feds. I think Chris shares blame for this stupidity too. He should have given her guidance on how to handle those situations (i.e. asking for a lawyer right away).
Nope. He should have never said a word to her about what he did for a living.
Adriana grew up in this lifestyle, her uncle is Richie Aprile. She wasn't "green" to the lifestyle. It's the only thing she knew growing up. As for Chris, he does share some blame but if you stop and think about it closely, Chris never actually told her anything that is incriminating or a direct threat to the mob family. He never discussed with her about killing anyone and he even told her that if he was ever Made, she would never know. She kept asking him questions because she was aware of the ceremony for him but he asked her to stop questioning him because even if he knew, he wouldn't tell her.
The truth is, the FBI had nothing on the mob through Adriana. What did they actually have? Well, they had proof of a small amount of drugs from Chris and Adriana and an illegal firearm possession that was owned by Chris. The charges they had were individualistic to both Chris and Adriana, no direct threat the Soprano crime family as a whole.
Some people will chalk this all up to bad writing or flaws in the storyline, but they often overlook the situation because they are not understanding the effects of the drugs having an impact on their mental well-being of both Christopher and Adriana. Their drug use and addiction was preventing them from viewing things with a clear mind and point of view. The drug use made them panic and both of them made bad decisions. Chris was never an open book with her, so she actually didn't know shit about anything. He'd know that if he wasn't drugged out but he panicked just like she did. The drug problem both of them shared directly resulted in the outcome of Adriana's fate.

@@furbabydaddy814 lol it's possible that I would also panic if my freedom was in jeopardy but I think a lot of that storyline between those two is heavily influenced by their drug usage and not using their heads. Instead of going to jail, she ended up in the ground.

The way Mr. Kim blocked Tony B’s punch, which is one of the funniest moment of the show to have an Asian character stereotypically block a punch, I thought this was gonna be it for Tony.

1. Meadow brining Noah back home to watch films.
2. Carmella buying Uncle Ben's rice.
When Furio tried to push Tony in the helicopter secodnary blade, because of jealousy for Tony and lust for Carmela. Then he had to run away and was never seen again.
Ritchie in a twisted way, saved Beansie because he was allowed to move Florida and get away from all the NY and NJ drama and war and probably outlived all the NJ crew. Also was allowed to comfortably earn in the nice Miami weather and nice house, from the looks of the Miami trip.
I think that Ade's should be #1. It was by far the most avoidable situation that literally ended in the worst way possible...
Well to be fair the FBI was really pushing her to the extreme and were gonna go ahead and put her in prison for not giving up Chris. If anyone found out she is going to prison they would’ve killed her anyway.
She was doomed no matter what so she thought she could trust her lover enough to free themselves from their own purgatory. Unfortunately Chris was too afraid to leave that life and just had her killed.
How was it avoidable?

Even though they all knew her, she was still technically just his girlfriend and not part of the family. That didn't do her any favors when it came to deciding how to handle it. I'll never forget that scene where after she almost convinced Chris to go along with leaving the life, he went to the gas station and saw the miserable look on the face of a guy there with his wife and kids. That moment really sealed her fate. He chose "the life" over her.
The entire Pine Barren's episode wouldn't exist if Paulie wasn't an ass for 5 minutes

@@kevinmach730 He’s the only guy who actually loves his family and he’s not afraid to show it to anyone. He’s a better father, and a better husband than anyone else on the show. He may be prone to his outbursts, but he’s the most levelheaded boss on the show

@@malcador Because they’re all sharks in the water, they’ve all got their own interests and motives, and for the majority of the guys in the mob, they only care about themselves in the end. They only think about themselves, so of course they’ll get upset when Johnny does something they don’t agree with
Some dumb decisions in the Sopranos:
- Adriana helping Matush the drug dealer get rid of a body or even letting him in her club in the first place.
- Adriana blowing the fat guy from Penn & Teller.
- Anything Janice did
- Tony not having Noel whacked for shtupping Meadow
Made guys aren't untouchable, they can kill each other for various infractions, as we have seen throughout the Sopranos. They're only untouchable to non-made guys. Typically though, you'd need the permission of their boss.

I fully agree with you that the show is littered with stupid decisions, but I think that was the point that David Chase and his writers were trying to show. How powerful a crime family can be, but they're really not much more smart than a pack of animals, the exact point of a mob family. This is what made the show so incredible, unique and inimitable. They exposed the fact there was nothing special about any of these characters as far as common sense, but they were ruthless criminals and murderers. Ok, everybody attack me all at once. Go!😂

Tony B had so many things in his life go wrong, that he couldn't handle it when something was going right. Him attacking Kim, when there was every indication that the spa was going to be a success, was purely self-sabotage. I think that Blundetto was so rude to Tony when he first got out of prison because he was trying to create distance. But it didn't work, Tony pulled him back into the life anyway. Tony B knew he was essentially powerless to stop it. Maybe he torpedoed the spa because he knew Tony would eventually get his hooks into the place and would rather destroy it than let Tony pervert his dream of going straight.
This makes sense. But it always came out of left field when he just starts beating the crap out of the guy.

I think Tony B's agreeing to whack Joey Peeps was also another blunder on his part. It caused a rift between Johnny Sack and Tony, and would eventually result in further retaliations on both sides of New York and New Jersey, and resulted in a lot more blood being shed, which included Tony B's himself.
Skipping town was perhaps the only wise thing he did there. Look at what happened to Trattman in killing them softly (granted there was prescident there). Runnning away does confirm his guilt but staying hes likely to get hit anyway because they believe it to be true even if he could try to convince them otherwise. Everything else i agreed with though.
Yeah, it always seemed weird to me that Vito would so openly dress in leather and flaunt his gayness at an NYC leather bar, especially because he has to have known it was paying up to one of the NY families. Even if the two guys didn't show up to collect that night, among the employees and patrons there just might have been someone who would recognize him and either try to blackmail him or rat him out to the mob. He probably wasn't the only DL-gay guy from Jersey frequenting those bars.

I think Vito, returning to New Jersey, was probably the single dumbest idea. Or even the places that he was meeting guys, that was really dumb in itself. I mean in that day and age even no social media wasn’t a thing but you could still go online and meet people. It wasn’t 1983 where the only way to meet someone was to go out to the club. You should’ve been doing things like that in a hotel two states over if he was.
After that, I think some of the worst decisions were made by Tony himself in the last season. I think he could’ve prevented Carlo from flipping if he just didn’t let everyone know that it didn’t matter if you were loyal or not, but the size of the envelope was all he cared about . I think treating Christopher better through the years would’ve also helped out immensely. Tony was the one that forced him to get clean in the first place and then the last two years that he’s around Tony constantly belittle him for not having a drink. I’m sure if Tony could’ve seen the future I think he would’ve realized that he needed everyone that he could have around him once we get towards the end of the war with New York. Out of all the people that were close to him when we first meet him in season one, the only one that’s really a part of his inner circle at the end is Paulie.
I’m surprised Tony getting frustrated and giving his mom stolen plane tickets didn’t make the list. Sure his mom unexpectedly died before that could become an major issue for Tony. But I think it’s safe to say after how Livia played Junior against Tony she would have taken full advantage of the FBI stolen ticket situation and likely sold Tony out as revenge for Green Grove. At best Livia uses that situation to get the maximum leverage over Tony for whatever she wanted from him. Tony absolutely knew by then that given the chance to harm him Livia would do so in a heartbeat. Also surprised Paulie going after the Russian for no reason in Pine Barrens didn’t get a mention. Yes technically we never hear about the Russian again with no revenge ever taking place from Slava. But if that Russian did make it home in one piece Paulie probably gets whacked. If not Chris by association and maybe even Tony and other top guys like Syl if things continued to escalate like they did with Phil at the end
I read some years back the Russian Green Beret (he killed 14 Czechoslovakians single handedly) did survive according to show creator Chase. I assume since the Russian, Paulie, and Cristopher all survived Paulie's impulsive stupidity, Tony and Slava didn't take the matter further.
Carmine Jr. talking about Billy Leotardo's death when he was on the verge of brokering peace between Tony and Phil. Unless you stand by the theory that he orchestrated the war between Tony and Phil for his own gain, it was the equivalent of fumbling the ball on the end zone.
Go back to the episode where Carmine Jr. is playing golf with his father and Johnny, and you'll see what a calculating and manipulative little shit he could be. Then there the scene with him and Rusty Milio where he basically says that he's playing the long game to eventually become boss.

Great list and I completely agree that Vito's decisions were the dumbest. Let me add a couple three other dumb decisions:
1) Christopher killing the newly retired cop. Even for a dirty cop, there had to be a massive investigation into his murder. Chris must've left some finger prints while smoking and watching TV. Other dirty cops would have gone to their sources to find out who did it.
2) Christopher and Paulie killing the waiter. He was waiting on THEIR table and the police would've figured out he had been stiffed.
3) Tony killing Ralphie. Tony's lack of Gary Cooper-ness was triggered by the noble stallion's burning to death (the corpse being dragged off was one of the saiddest scenes in the show) and Ralph's flippant comment about Tony's beef and sausage intake. Raphie's disappearance, mourned even by those who would not urinate on him to put out a fire, caused suspicion and dissent among the ranks. Furthermore, Ralphie was practically minting money for Tony and the family. His death started Tony's financial downturn that plagued him for the rest of the series.
Any time Adrianna brought anything challenging up to Chris, he beat the fuck out of her. Her decision to share any knowledge of the FBI, even at the beginning, would not have changed a thing They would have just suspected she wasn't telling them everything and off'ed her anyway. Hers was one of the saddest plot lines of the show, not only because we see women go back to dirtbags in real life, but also because she truly love him.
I disagree. Adrianna getting a lawyer would have saved er life. The worse that would happen to her was be a little jail time.

Tony chooses not to wack Paulie in the end but the damage was already done. Paulie wouldn’t sit and wait for something like that to happen again so he struck first. Tony completely underestimated Paulie and paid the ultimate price for it.

Beansie's situation with Richie wasn't set that Richie would soon be dead after a while. Richie's relationship with Tony was deteriorating from the start but there might have been room for restoration. Richie crippling Beansie was far worse than Beansie standing up to Richie. It ultimately left Richie in a spot where he was not respected by Tony and the rest and ultimately would have lead to his death had he not struck Janice out of frustration from his fucked relationship with Tony.
Good point, the tension between the two really heated up after that too.
Tony and Silvio discussed Richie getting whacked shortly before Janice shot him. If you look closely, when Tony enters Janice's house and notices Richie dead on the ground, Tony makes a little smile
Smacking Janice, I really felt for the guy there. But snarling "put my supper on the table" was a bit much. But then the Russian who clobbered Janice was one of my favorite characters. I wish they'd done more with him after Tony and Mr. Williams left him in the store Christmas display.

For me I could never wrap my head around the whole Benny and Artie feud.
Benny using the boss’s childhood friend’s business to steal credit card numbers, and physically attacking Artie for retaliating, always seemed like stepping into No Man’s Land.
Especially when an earlier episode had Ralph refuse to lend him money, because Artie was off limits.
It felt like a dumb decision by Benny, and an even dumber one by the writers when A) he should’ve never considered pulling that, and B) the fact there was no consequence for the scheme.

I would argue Tony not giving up Tony B was one of the worst decisions. That was the point were everyone started to resent him and question his motives. On top of that, Tony B was completely in the wrong and it was the second time he killed someone on his own and created huge problems
